A Miss Hong Kong contestant complains that she was treated poorly by TVB in the first interview
Monday June 8, 2009 Hong Kong
Translated by: Matchbox @ http://mediachamber.net

Miss Hong Kong's slogan has always been "Beautiful and Intelligent". But earlier the girls that turned up for the auditions were below standard. Apple Daily received an English e-mail from a contestant that attended the first interview named Lucy. She stated that the judges treated her poorly. The judges suggested her English was below standard which she found unfair. In the email she used the words "Hurt Die Me". The Co-ordinating manager for the pageant Chan Ka Yeung denied and said "Definitley not, the company will always pay attention to courtesy. Perhaps the contestant didn't get through the next round and was unhappy about it."

TVB executive Virginia Lok also denied treating the contestants poorly. She said "6 Contestants are grouped together to face the judges in the first interview. Normally we just ask them very general questions such as "Why do you want to enter Miss Hong Kong?" and "Which part of your body do you like most or dislike? We will see what reaction and answers they give us. Perhaps the contestant was too nervous."

Lucy's E-mail

The Contestant's e-mail contained a lot of Hong Kong English (港式英語),

我 是 Lucy, I went to Miss Hong Kong first interview. Wah d judges very not polite and not nice law. Today I see a megazine saying this year's Girls so ugly. I saw many good and pretty girls there but they didn't choose ja ma. Don't choose mei suen law but the judge in first interview -- most very not polite to many young girls and to to me law. I only 18 the judges ask me to "why join Miss HK go and why not study la u only F7 ja wor how can fright with other wor." Also say my English bad … hurt die me.
Ho La, other girl tell me la, she study in University ok ga dou but little fat or short then the judge (woman) said " why you look fat or so short!" wah ho hurt ga ma.
One girl is a 博 士 student ar very high level and very nice ga dou cant get in second interview la. We think she will be in ga but she said no law. You can search her pic and my pic to see la. She gum high level duo ng dak, gum me ng duk duo rite gei but i think the whole choosing is not fair law, choose model mei? young yao inch', high study level yao inch, short yao inch … They onky choose rich girl law so bad.
We don't go and let them inch ga law if they need tall or high level people then why not put in the application form lei.

wow her english is horrible...
she should stop adding the chinese to it if its written in english -.- for example the "law, wor, la" etc she has to stop using them. Also her sentences don't really make sense like its supose to. Also when in the e-mail it said "hurt die me" it didn't even make sense. The judges are right her English is bad.

i'm sorry, is that english that i'm reading? Lucy's paragraph I mean.
95% of that bs is like.... is that suppose to be some chinglish slang words?
If she think beauty pageant is all about the outer look... well, she's wrong...
apparently, she "might" be pretty, but her inner beauty is not-so-great.
one word to describe her: naive (i hope she know what's naive).

That definitely is "Hong Kong style English." The problem with the e-mail is... she's writing down in English what she would say in Cantonese... that's a big no no, especially if this is a "complaint." I think her complaint would have been taken more seriously if it was in proper (formal) english, not this chinglish stuff.

If the interviewers really told her to continue studying... I agree. It's for her own good actually, since not a lot of Miss HK contestants make it big in the entertainment industry. May as well keep studying, go to college, improve her English, and maybe get a good job afterwards.

Good thing she didn't make it, otherwise the show would be hard to watch as well!

I had to read some lines a couple of times to understand what she is trying to say cuz she mixes English with some Chinese. If that's the English she used in the 1st interview, then IMO, it's considered below standard.

her english is HORRIBLE i read half and have to guess half..
i think if she wants to prove she is good in ENGLISH she shouldn't put any cantonese slang words
slangs just show she is so uneducated and i dont know disgusting in an sense

Her English is bad. I don't see why she's complaining, they were only stating the truth.

I find this girl's letter absolutely hilarious. I've heard about how students in Hong Kong frequently mesh English words with Chinese when speaking and even when writing, but if she wants to make a complaint and prove that she's worthy of the Miss Hong Kong title, she should at least take out the "law" and "wor". They not only point out that she butchered not only the English language, but also the Chinese.

The reason they ask her about why she chose not to continue her education is merely for understanding the contestant as an individual and to decide if this contestant even has a good goal in life. It's absurd that she thinks that they're criticizing her for that. If so, then all the past Miss HK would have been bawling.

The point of Miss Hong Kong is to present, beauty, elegance and intelligence. Just by this very letter alone, she already killed the requirements of elegance and intelligence. I bet the reporters only published this to mock said contestant for her courageous attempt to retaliate for not being selected.

OMG her English

'Hurt Die Me' reading her letter LoL

Yup it's better for her to go back studying as well as improving her English. People will then take her more seriously instead of treating her like a joke

It looked like something my friend would write (since English wasn't her first language) but at least my friend's written English is still understandable.. This one is a killer!

How can she be Miss HK with that standard in English?
Think the judge is doing the right thing to fail her!

But whether the judges can be rude is another question, they should at least speak to the contestants nicely!

Uh... wows. She has nothing to complain about, her English is terrible!
And it isn't exactly smart of her to write a complaint in Chinglish, especially since her English is not understandable! She should have just stuck to Chinese.. but it doesn't really look like a complaint letter, it's so informal it looks more like something she'd blogged.

Hello, don't blame her. Eventhough her English is below par, i don't think it is a requirement to be Miss Hong Kong. Miss Hong Kong needs to be articulate in whatever language she is comfortable with, not necessary English.

starters, her english is horrible and having a mix of canto and english.. she should just choose one language.
she should've also written a more formal letter.
but by the looks of it, the judges were right.
she has nothing to actually complain about.

Hahahaha hurt me die, I still cant quite read that letter- if you can call it that......barely a sentence there.

Enough said, her letter proved the whole point of the reason why she was kicked out at the first round !!! Not only can she not string a basic english sentence together, but its seems she has a big head too.

My cousin spells like that too......terrible, how the hell is anyone able to read that.

I think a reasonably good command of spoken English is required coz the winner would probably have to represent HongKong in the Miss World Universe I think. Anyway, I guess her email was meant for the media in HongKong - those people probably understand her lingo? .. perhaps that's the way the locals speak? :) *shrug* poor girl
