1985, a picture in the newspaper titled, “the girl chases after the parrot” received wide response. The author, a foreign photographer wrote on this notepad:

The girl who is named Chin (Michelle) has been suffering from asthma since she was born, longs for friendship and school life but she’s not allowed to step outside. One day, a parrot flew in, her parents built a birdcage and kept the parrot at home as the one and only friend of Chin. However, Chin found that the parrot wasn’t happy because its jailed just like her, she decided to set it free. When she watch the parrot flying away, she couldn’t help but follow, running through the fields and streams, until it disappears in the woods, tears ran down Chin’s face. She’s sad because of the lost of her one and only friend, but Chin also feels happy as the parrot won what she’s never have-freedom.

Fei in Beijing, Chin in Tianjing

The eight-year old Fei (Ken), lives in a far near a suburb in Beijing, he wants to encourage the girl when he saw the picture. He started to write letters and since then there’s one more friend in Chin’s life, they’ve become pen pals.

Fei’s father is a police man and mother is a researcher at the farm, they’re both disciplined but their way of educating their children is rather democratic, discussion and encouragement are the communication models between the two generations of the Lu family.

After one-year of correspondence, Fei decided to visit Chin and say something encouraging face to face, he notified Chin about him visiting. Chin was happy to death and kept waiting … but Fei broke his promise twice! His parents disagreed. By the time he finally made it to Tianjing, they missed each other again. Chin left town for medical treatment. Just like that, they never got a chance to meet each other, no matter how many appointments they have made in letters…

The Girl with a Face Mask

Seventeen years later, Beijing City Zoo, a man begs a panda to eat bamboos, tourist around them all break into laugh.

This man is Lu Bin Fei, works for the zoo, he always says the job can make more money because its dangerous, but if you see the smile and tenderness in his eyes when he’s with animals, you know he really loves them. Very few people know his true job is a restorer of ancient paintings, in his spare time, he helps out at the zoo.

These days, a rarely seen disease affects a monkey from the tropical rainforest. The zoo doesn’t have any idea on what to do. So the zoo authorities invite an expert to help, she is Chu Chin.

Chu Chin wears a white face mask when she first appears in the zoo, she’s from Xishuangbanna, nobody has ever thought that the so-called expert can be so young, nobody has ever thought either that an animal expert can wear a mask to the zoo. She is so devoted to those animals and looks like she loves the job with all her heart, then why a mask?

This has set her apart from the other staff at the zoo, until one day Chu Chin was urgently sent to the hospital, Bin Fei now knows the true reason is her long term disease—asthma, the polluted air in the city can induce her sickness, and its can kill her life when it gets severe. She knows it but she comes anyway, so that she can save the lives of those monkeys.

What kind of life experience can make a beautiful young girl work in tropical rainforest? Bin Fei wonders, he doesn’t know it all links back to Chu Chin’s dream during her childhood; he doesn’t know it either that Chu Chin is the young Chin from Tianjing 17 years ago.

The young girl chases after the parrot. The parrot was missing its hometown. The parrot was missing its hometown and was supposed to fly back the very distanced Xishuangbanna. When Chin’s parents found her, they were so scared but surprisingly found out she’s okay and can breathe normally, because of this experience, they allow her to go out and play just like any normal kid. Finally she was able to get her freedom.

It is the parrot who brings her freedom, she made a wish that someday she’ll be able to go to the woods and express her appreciation to the bird. As she was growing up, she also learns that the rainforest is slowly disappearing, due to human’s own greed. She then makes up her mind to dedicate her life to the protection of the rainforest.

After so many years, Bin Fei and Chu Chin finally meet each other. At first they didn’t know they were the pen pals of good old times. They found out one night when there was no power and both of them ran to check the animal’s condition. Sitting in the dark, the two suddenly feel something special towards each other, since then, the distance between them is no more. They recognize each other as their life long partner.

There is a question in Chu Chin’s mind, why does Bin Fei try to hide his talent of photography? What is the secret? Chu Chin found some amazing pictures when she was cleaning the medical record of rainforest monkeys, she sent those pictures to a geographic magazine for a competition and they were nominated. Bin Fei was so mad at her, she can’t understand what the big secret was.

The Camera

Bin Fei’s gift of arts has been praised since he was little. His paintings would always win medals. This made him want to be an artist. At the age of 18, he fell in love with photography; unfortunately his parents couldn’t afford his dream.

He was so young and didn’t understand life’s difficulties. He insisted to buy a camera and his mother had to take another job to earn enough money. Arts have taken him away from his family.

By the time Bin Fei received a brand new camera, he was so excited, the first picture he wanted to take was that of his parents. However, he wasn’t able to make it happen. His parents never returned, they were murdered by a criminal’s revenge.

Bin Yen, his younger sister started to hate him. Brother and sister has become strangers since then. Bin Fei gave up the arts and never touched the camera sealed in the carton.

He left town and became a restorer for ancient paintings, he also worked part time for the zoo. All the money he makes would be mailed to Bin Yan using his uncle’s name to supply her education and living expenses, nobody knew about this except their uncle.

Chu Chin gradually understood the pain buried deep in Bin Fei’s heart, with her efforts, the broken relationship of the brother and sister started to change, Bin Fei promises to overcome the dilemma and pick up his camera again.

Chu Chin completes her job at the zoo and returns to Xixhuangbanna. Bin Fei misses her so much and flies there to visit. The reunited two are happily dancing again. Bin Fei makes up his mind to record the beauty of Nature using his camera.

The day he picks up his camera, he caught a colorful feather falling down from a singing parrot, and he is emotionally touched. He enters the rainforest with this feather, hoping to propose to Chu Chin. Finding his lover happily playing with a baby elephant, he takes the camera, the moment he pressed the shutter, there is a gun shot, Chu Chin falls down in blood – she is killed by hunters, and everything is recorded in his camera…

Facing such a tragedy, Bin Fei is in deep grief, his sister encourages him to change it into inner strength – to get the killer.

The police has been after the man behind the hunter group, “Blade,” the responsible officer arrests the hunter with bin Fei’s evidence picture.

Bin Fei comes back to the rainforest and found a girl who looks so much like Chu Chin, was he missing her too much? Bad vision? Human or ghost? Or just Bin Fei own illusion?

He takes takes good friend, Chuan’s advise, taking the offer from National Geographic as their photographer, to complete his lover’s dream, letting the whole world see the beauty of the rainforest.

He sees the girl again in Xishuangbanna, he follows her this time to find out the truth, yes, she is a person who is alive, she has exactly the same appearance as Chu Chin, but with a different name – Jade, from “Dai,” a minority of Yunan, he can’t help to approach her, just to remind him of Chu Chin.

Jade is like the peacock princess of the myth of her own race, pretty, graceful and nice. In the beginning, she a little afraid of Bin Fei, and little by little, she’s touched by his story and his genuineness.

Revenge

In the notes Chu Chin left behind, Bin Fei finds that she seems to know there is someone taking control of the hunter group. He tries to find out more about their killing of protected animals, the transportation firm owned by Rock becomes his target. During the investigation process, he learns that Rock has grown up together with Jade and has already proposed to her.

Jade struggles about the impending marriage, she likes Rock as a brother but the she love is Bin Fei. Her godfather, Wei, a renowned charitable man in Xishuangbanna, planned her marriage to Rock. She respects and appreciated her godfather so much and doesn’t want to refuse his goodwill.

A key man of the hunter group, Chang is found at home after he committed suicide. His death blocks the investigation works, the only possible guess for Bin Fei and Blade no is: Rock maybe the man behind the group and he killed Chang to seal his mouth.

On the wedding day, Rock is arrested because all evidence points to him. Rock wants Jade to believe him, that he is not capable of doing such a terrible thing. Except this, he keeps silent…
