![]() From Left to Right: Uknow Yunho, Xiah Junsu, Hero JaeJoong, Max Changmin, Micky Yoochun TVXQ 東方神起 (Tong Vfang Xien Qi) is a Korean boy band. The group is composed of five members specializing in the areas of dance, acappella, various drama acting, and pop with an R&B vibe. The group has gained popularity in South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, China, Thailand, Malaysia, and other East Asian countries. Currently, it is one of the top pop groups of the Korean Wave (hallyu). While the group’s international name is TVXQ, it also goes by other names which have the same meaning, but are adaptations according to language. The group’s Korean name is 동방신기, pronounced Dong Bang Shin Ki/Gi (abbrev: DBSK/DBSG). In Japan the group is known as Tōhōshinki (abbrev: THSK). Its Chinese name is used as its international name. The name is translated to "Rising Gods of the East." Initially marketed as an "a cappella" group, most of TVXQ's music is mainstream K-pop. However, throughout all its releases the group has shown versatility in style, allowing them to avoid being permanently typecast as a certain "genre style." All three of the group’s albums thus far have included dance, pop, ballads, and even rock-inspired tracks. *adapted from wikipedia Group History (unhide)
The members were separately chosen by SM Entertainment through various auditions. The trainees in the company were divided into groups of their peers and received training to find potential talents. The five members of TVXQ were originally the lead vocals of other singing groups. The first member to join was Kim Junsu (김준수). He enjoyed singing at his church when he was young. At the age of 12 he was brought into the band through a televised talent search. His vocals won over the judges and won him through training for the next six years until he debuted as Xiah Junsu (시아준수; Xiah is pronounced Shee-ah in Korean). Xiah was a stage name that Junsu himself chose, explaining to his fans that the name was short for "Asia," as Asia is pronounced "a-shee-a" in Korean. "Xiah" would be a reference to his desire to become not only a star in Korea, but a star recognized all throughout the continent. The group’s second member, Jung Yunho (정윤호), secured his spot in TVXQ through a dance competition, winning first place. Prior to this, he accumulated some musical experience as a rapper and backup dancer for Kpop singer Dana in her Diamond video. As a dancer, he accompanied many Korean singers, travelling to China as well. His chosen stage name is U-know Yunho from his Korean name Yunho; U-know is pronounced "You know" in English. However, it is meant to mean "Yunho 'Knows You'" (presumably, based on how one would say it in the Korean grammatical order) in regards to understanding the other members as their leader. He is the second oldest member in TVXQ. Kim Jaejoong (김재중) left his hometown in Chungnam to audition for SM Entertainment. Having left the shelter of home, he experienced poverty and strife before becoming a celebrity. He debuted under the name a fortune teller foretold years before: YoungWoong JaeJoong (영웅재중). Youngwoong means "hero" in Korean, hence his international name, Hero. Jaejoong was selected from an audition of 5000 people. Jaejoong won first place, both in best looking and best vocals. That made him the main vocal of TVXQ. Shim Changmin (심창민) was grouped with the youngest participants in the audition. Like Xiah Junsu, he impressed the judges with his voice. He joined the band under the name Choikang Changmin (최강창민; the English counterpart to his stage name is Max). Choikang in Korean means "the best;" "Max" became an international rendition of this name. Six months before the group’s debut, a final member was added. Park Yoochun (박유천) lived in the State of Virginia for roughly four years and was found by SM Entertainment at a singing competition in Virginia. Yoochun's stage name, Micky, written as 秘器 in Chinese characters, means "hidden weapon", which symbolises his desire to become a "hidden weapon" in the music industry. Micky was also his English nickname when he lived in Virginia. As the winner of the talent show, he was granted the opportunity to sign with SM in Korea. TVXQ made their first appearance on December 26, 2003 during a BoA and Britney Spears Showcase. The group officially debuted in 2004 with its single Hug. TVXQ has now released 3 Korean albums and 2 Japanese albums. *adapted from wikipedia
Member Profiles Xiah Junsu (시아준수) Birthday: December 15, 1986 Birthplace: Gyeonggi Height: 180 cm (approximately 5’ 11”) Weight: 60 kg Position: Baritenor Uknow Yunho (유노윤호) Birthday: February 16, 1986 Birthplace: Gwangju Height: 183 cm (approximately 6’ 1”) Weight: 66 kg Position: Baritone, Group Leader Hero/Youngwoong JaeJoong (영웅재중) Birthday: January 26, 1986 Birthplace: Chungnam Height: 180 cm (approximately 5’ 11”) Weight: 63 kg Position: Main Vocals Max/Choikang Changmin (최강창민) Birthday: February 18, 1988 Birthplace: Seoul Height: 186 cm (approximately 6’ 2”) Weight: 61 kg Position: Tenor Micky Yoochun (믹키유천) Birthday: June 4, 1986 Birthplace: Seoul Height: 180 cm (approximately 5’ 11”) Weight: 64 kg Position: Bass-baritone For more pictures of TVXQ! go to the DBSG Gallery FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) about TVXQ! Resigned AF Crew Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Group: Advanced Member |
*I'm saving this post... for me, because it may come in handy in the future.
* * * I think this would be a good way to start the new topic. Generally, mod crew is advised to basically quote the last five posts of the original archived thread in order to jumpstart this thread. Since the most recent five posts in the old thread have been revolved around these questions, I think it will just be necessary for me to post the questions, here, ne? QUOTE Hello everyone. I am here again to have a survey about them. Some of my friends keep on asking me what makes TVXQ so popular. And so I told them, "Because they have wonderful voices." But they said, "Of course they do have wonderful voices, aren't they performers? But what we mean is, what makes them outstanding? There are so many talented and cool artists in korea, but why them?" I myself can't defend the boys alone. So I am asking for your help. Hope you don't mind to answer the following questions: 1) What makes them so popular? 2) What is your favorite TVXQ song/s? Why? 4) Who is your favorite member? Why? 3) What do you think is the best thing about them? Why? 5) What do you dislike about them? Why? (This is just my personal question. To be fair, I also want to know what is the worst thing about this boyband. I want to measure how light it is) *credits to bAby_pAwLie05 for the questions. And, to set aside my biases and give a somewhat neutral answer to the question: What do you dislike about them and why? Now, before you all jump down my throats when I start my criticisms... I'll hide the rest.
I like to think about things from both perspectives. And you are getting a ton of good reactions and good comments, but *I* can also totally see why people WOULDN'T like DBSK, and I'm going to share those opinions here. 1) Their managements. Even though SM is the huge headlining company in Korea, and basically "where you want to be"... we all know the horrid and nasty rumours about SM and their overworking... tendencies. Plus, the fact that SM is not about genuinely entertaining people, but rather more interested in generating money and.. stock options... that makes me very disapproving of SM. 2) Cassiopeia. Need I say more? Obsessive fans. And anti-fans... both of which can turn a person off, severely, to DBSK. 3) They aren't that talented vocally. Okay, before people decide to hunt me down and put superglue in my water -- ouch. that was low, wasn't it? -- you have to admit, people do have different tastes in music. BUT SM, did play it very well by finding five boys who cover ALL the bases of music quite well. You have Changmin, who has a very bright and strong voice in tone. Some people like bright voices... and if DBSK didn't have Changmin, well, that might be enough for people to be like 'eh.' I think that sometimes his voice can be just a little too over and too bright... but overall, I like his bright tone SO MUCH! BUT, I can see why people wouldn't. Guys just weren't really meant to sing mezzo or soprano... and sometimes Changmin does... and it just sounds weird... JaeJoong has a strong voice, but he uses his vibrato too often sometimes... and it sounds a little weak. No doubt he is very talented vocally though. I definitely think he deserves the spot of main vocal in DBSK because his voice is very.... normal. It's good, but there isn't anything exceptionally exceptionally unique about it. But I love it's husky quality and how it hits that perfect Baritone-Tenor spot that is quite unique... and his falsetto makes me shiver as well. But I don't think there is anything that makes it unique. It's a beautiful voice... but nothing that really stands apart from the numerous other 'good voices' in the world. It balances out the other voices in the group that tend to go out there. He sort of brings everything back together and turn the focus back to the group when people start to wander out when Changmin and Xiah do their thing. Xiah's voice could just be too girly and feminine and "squeaky" for some people. Occaisionally, I am one of them (on certain tracks). He has a good voice and a strong voice, but sometimes, the songs that they sing do not really flatter it and he ends up sounding... well, whiny. BUT Xiah has one of those unique voices, which I think works in his favor. It's high and very very very bright and strong! Micky has a nasally voice. It gets really nice and bright and strong when he hits higher notes... but when he isn't singing strongly and is just singing the low verses (which he usually gets).... his voice is almost unbearingly nasally. Sometimes, I wonder WHY in the WORLD he won a singing contest. But then he'll climb up the scale a bit and hit those notes in his deep, but bright voice and I'll go "ohh... that's why." Still, a lot of what he sings does not flatter his voice. Which is unfortunate. I think Micky is one of the ones that got in because of 'overall appeal' rather than just simply talent. After all, part of SM's formula is to have at least one American -- or at least former -- citizen in their groups (Ki Bum, Stephanie, etc). Yunho's voice is the one that probably gets the most criticism (even though it's argued he practices the most!). His voice is really deep and soothing and a bit weak. His tendency to vibrato tends to be overmuch and... well, I do think Yunho is one of the weaker singers. But his falsetto is great (usually basses do have a FANTASTIC falsetto) and his rapping is definitely beyond par, methinks. His voice always sounds very thick and never sounds bright at all. Some people like that... some people don't. I would like to hear Yunho's voice sound a little less thick, but the key thing here is that Yunho's voice is very very unique! *I think all of them complement each other very well in aspects of compensating and covering for their vocal weaknesses and strengths. BUT, I do think that sometimes their recording companies aren't so bright and... well, don't showcase off their talents as well as they could. I know of several people -- whose opinions I value highly, and I also know that they are not judgmental or excessively biased -- who do not think TVXQ are really that good singers. I think it's because they all have very 'typical' voices... and nothing really really REALLY unique that makes them stand out incredibly. A lot of popular singers have voices that are unique, but not necessarily good. Because you can get good voices all the time... but a good and unique voice? haha. Besides, personal preferences may vary. Some people just may not like what they sing... and therefore are naturally inclined to not listen to their music and not figure out their "real talents." Of course, as always, looks are subjective, so I really don't think there's any point in commenting on that. Although, vocals are subjective as well... Offtopic point for a moment: some British music magazine voted Mariah Carey and Celine Dion as two of the world's worst singers of all time. Ummm.... no. I think you're wrong, you stupid magazine. They are two of my FAVORITE singers of all time. Case in point. All in all, I do think DBSK balances each other out... but there is always the base dislike for boybands. Boybands find it extremely hard to get ground in the business because they are usually just perceived as a bunch of pretty boys who can't really sing but have good looks to balance everything out. I mean, in America (where the boyband trend really started; Asia just kinda took it and ran).... most of the original boybands (Backstreet Boys, NSYNC) were actually really really quite talented... but they just couldn't break out of the mold (even BSB couldn't do it until they started doing solo projects) of being a 'boyband' and taken seriously as real artists. I mean, come on, seriously... when you're classified as a 'boyband,' it's hard for people to take you seriously. Especially when you're all in your late twenties and hardly 'boys' anymore (not DBSK, I'm referring to BSB mostly). I think the classification 'boyband' instantly makes people a lot more skeptical and unreceptive than if they were to simply just sit down and listen to their music. Maybe if DBSK was marketed more as an a cappella group (which they certainly have the capabilities of being)... they wouldn't be so frowned upon (after all, there are many all-male gospel choirs and a cappella groups that have incredible recognition). But I think boybands generate more fanbase (aka money) and that's what SM Town is aiming for (hint: why I hate SM). Even DSBK doesn't want to be 'idols' but rather they want to be known as artists... I wonder what makes groups like Boyz II Men and KC and JoJo perceived as artists rather than a boybands... probably the genre and fanbase that they attract (and the fact that KCi and JoJo are only TWO people... so it's a lot harder to classify as a 'band'). Okay, I think I've provoked enough .... ill feelings for now.
This post has been edited by nanshi: Mar 18 2007 2 42 AM |

nanshi:
you just said what i had in mind all this while. it's just that i am never good with my words.
jaejoong has good falsetto but his singing doesn't come off as being strong sometimes. there are times where he can sing in a pretty strong manner but he just tends to go weak in certain parts. his voice will just go soft and it sounded like he's uncertain of himself. that makes it bad for the song that they are singing. his falsetto just gives me the goosebumps...in another word, makes me shivers...when i listen to it. only someone who's a soprano can top it. not me though...as i am not a soprano. as for micky, i do agree that he sounds very nasal. his singing is a bit weak as well. but like you said, he has that overall appearance. he has that charming looks that will make girls fall for him...i am not one of them though. and i guess his ability to play the piano just balance out his singing department. well, that's what i love about a guy. being able to play the piano. yunho...he still has a long way to go for him to be able to catch up with the rest of the members. why? it's because there are times where his singing sounded flat...not toneless but flat...as in not having any feelings to it. it's like he doesn't know how to put in his feelings to what he is singing. that can pull the whole song down. you will realize how i didn't comment on junsu's and changmin's vocal. for junsu, i am biased in that sense that i can't judge his singing properly. changmin...i wasn't really paying any particular attention to it. to me, his singing comes off as being pretty good. junsu has a unique voice...his hoarse voice...that might just attract certain people to it though not all...i am one of them. ~~off topic~~ WHAT?!! that British magazine actually voted Mariah Carey and Celine Dion as the world's worst singers of all time?!! that magazine sure doesn't know how to appreciate good talents. i personally think Celine Dion is a great singer. i love her strong vocals a lot. i love her deep voice. okay...that's all for my opinion here.
This post has been edited by ~YingLing~: Mar 18 2007 9 31 AM |

once a fan, always a fan ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Group: Advanced Member |
1) What makes them so popular?
to be honest, i really don't know. never thought of it. it all depends on what you see and what you like. but since i'm the one answering this Q right now.. haha. let me put in my input on why. or should i say how? ahh, i don't know. i don't think it's 'what' makes them so popular. it's them, who bring and display their talents.. ahhhhhhh. i'm not good with words. i'm probably confusing with what i'm saying right now.. but i know what i mean. lol. to put it simple. they are popular 'cause there are many many girls in the world who love boys. haha! it could be their music, their personalities, their perfs., their singing, their love for one another and whatever else that people find interesting of them. and oh yeah, their looks. haha. i almost forgot that one! they still have a long way to go, but along the way.. as they improve and grow stronger.. i will support their singing ability as of now. of course, isn't that a given reason? haha. 2) What is your favorite TVXQ song/s? Why? favorite.. hmm.. i love all of their songs.. really, i do. i can listen to one after another without not skipping one song. but to say that i don't have at least one or two or three that i would put on repeat is a lie. if i were to pin point all of my faves from each of their albums, that would be quite a hassle.. haha. unless you don't mind.. okay, here i go anyway. -Tri-Angle album..
--Miduhyo.. one of my #1 all time faves has gotta be this one. i love singing along to this song and gosh.. just their voices in this song is just beautiful. --Whatever They Say accapella.. i just love all of their accapellas.. so yeah. haha. i just love how there is no instrumentals.. and all you hear is their voices.. --Million Men.. just the beat is catchy.. and to me, the song is hot. keke. just the way they sung it and all. -- I Never Let Go.. this song is really good to listen to when sleeping. keke. it's just so soothing. -- argh, i never got the title to this song. but it's track 9.. haha. same reason as ^ -- Tri-Angle.. and of course, this song is one of my top faves also. i love singing along to this song also.. hehe. i just love how they sung it. simple as that.
-Rising Sun album..
--Tonight.. also one of my top faves.. isn't the song itself self explanatory? haha. i just love it.. love it. --Rising Sun.. of course i love this song. haha. also one of my top faves. i love singing along to this song.. and the choreography of the dance is just awesome. this song is very catchy, well to me anyway. i think it's the beats to the song. haha. -- Unforgettable.. i also love singing along to this song. i think it's such a sweet song. -- Free Your Mind.. it's just something about this song that i just love.. esp. the chorus? part.. i love it. -- Always There.. one of my top faves also. haha. this was one of the very first songs i heard from them.. and liked them 'cause of their singing.
-O-Jung.Ban.Hab album..
--O.. title tracks are always my faves, of course. this song is also very catchy and i love singing along to this song as well. and the dance to it is just awesome! --Get Me Some.. the first time i heard this song, i loved it! many liked Hey Girl and all. but i wasn't really for it, but don't get me wrong, i like it too. haha. anyway, this song gets stuck in my mind easily after listening to it.. even if it's only a little part, it gets me hooked onto the song. haha. --Phantom.. i also liked this song when i first heard it.. i would say this wasn't that good.. the usual.. but hey, it got me hooked to it. haha. so i guess that says something. --Balloons.. the famous childhood song.. that i grew to know of. haha. it's so catchy and fun to sing along to.
-Vacation album/single.. this was a great album/single. haha. do i have to say more? it was just.. yeah. awesome. -Japanese singles/albums.. i actually love all of their singles and their first album.. haven't fully listened to their latest one though.. so no comment on that. it's always nice to see them sing in a different language, right? so yeah, i think they did a great job with their singles.. it just shows how much they worked hard to learn and sing it with all their emotion. -their debut single, Hug, is one of my top faves as well. haha. but i can't believe i forgot to mention it! this was the song that made them big.. of course i love it.. it's such a sweet song to listen and sing along to. 4) Who is your favorite member? Why? okay, so i love all members equally.. like the rest of you all here, right? but like all, i too, have a personal favorite member.. there's nothing wrong with that.. it's just personal taste.. Kim Junsu.. Xiah Junsu.. although i have a special spot for him only.. i don't express much about him. i just love his personality and his voice. but like i mentioned over at his thread.. it's never-ending love. he always brings something that i will love.. Junsu lovees should know what i mean, right? haha. he's just so cute and yet so handsome in his own way.. i really have nothing to add, 'cause it could be little things that i adore.. or pretty much obvious reasons.. but most of all, i love the fact that he's a member of TVXQ. hehe. 3) What do you think is the best thing about them? Why? their love and passion in making music. why? *sigh* of course there's a why. haha. it's because they are all so hardworking and never giving up. another thing is their comfort for one another. 5) What do you dislike about them? Why? (This is just my personal question. To be fair, I also want to know what is the worst thing about this boyband. I want to measure how light it is) i would have to agree with nanshi on the first two.. the management and Cassiopeia. *edit* when reading others' comments.. i totally agree with Flamingowl that they are so far away.. =( firefly06.. thanks a whole bunch for the hard work on making the third thread for us all! *hugs* This post has been edited by spyang: Mar 18 2007 8 50 PM |

YAY part 3 is UP!!!
1) What makes them so popular?? Honestly I dont know. But in my point of view it always starts off as the looks first or the music so either one... 2)What is your favorite TVXQ song/s? Honestly I dont have a specific perference since I like all of their songs...ahaha.. ALL of their songs are great.. which is real hard for me to pick. Yes, tehre may be some songs that I like better than teh others.. but tjere are too many to name from teh top of my head.. ahaha.. but whatever I'll just go and name the ones I can think of at the spot that I listen to over and over again. Step by Step Choosey Loveer Rising Sun Hello again Dead End Zion Promise Will you be my girlfriend? My best friend's girlfriend Hi ya ya Sky O jun ban hap Little Child Trust me Hug Balloons Somebody to love Stay with me tonight My Little Princess Tri- Angle Dangerous Mind Free your mind Million Men Unforgettable You only love Beautiful Life Phantom and... Thanks to... 4) Who is your favorite member? Why? Like all you girls.. I LOVE all of them..but of course if I said I didn;t have a favorite that would obviously be a lie...but my personal favorite is... YoungWoong JaeJoong Kim.. and yes, because hes special to me.. not that the others arent but I just happen to have a special place for him.. well I tend to show more love and obsession over him..but if I were to talk about teh whole band.. I would obsessed over each one of them equally...but its just the JaeJoong's description seem to be a bit more than the others. I like JaeJoong because of his mysteriousness...his voice, his humor and everything about him. At first when I saw their poster...I had my eyes on him first, and had a feeling that he was my ideal guy...but of course.. Im just saying that my future bf has to have at least 85% of his features...I know its high.. but I have faith..ahaha... n e ways.. I can't explain why I liked him.. I just had a feeling.. 3) What do you think is the best thing about them? I think the best thing about them is their love for music, their love for their fans, and their love for each other. [b]5) What do you dislike about them? Why? (This is just my personal question. To be fair, I also want to know what is the worst thing about this boyband. I want to measure how light it is.) To be quiet honest... I can't really point out what I dislike about them, cuz I dont' have anything against them and I can't think of anything against them. Maybe at times I would be like "Ohhh.. I wish I was as beautiful as JaeJoong.." but thats something I envy him and adore about him.. not something I hate.. so I would have to say that I dont' have anything I hate about this band. (One thing.. I don't like calling them boybands..and for me.. I dont see them as boybands.. or idols.. I see them as guys who had a wish or a dream and worked their butts off to fulfill that dream. Now that dream is reality it is no longer a dream anymore. I AM SO PROUD OF THEM!!) |

Bravo Nanshi!
*Plans out a mission to get her* Haha, I'm just kidding, but I'm glad you decided to post something from a different perspective and not from a fangirl's point of view. It was long, quite long I must say, but it was very insightful and well thought out. Of course we all have different opinions of who is "good" or not, so I can't argue with your statements because I, too agree with some of your words. I can't really go into detail at this moment (it's 1 AM), but all I can say is that I really agree with you about the last part. I absolutely DETEST SM, but somehow I love their artists the most
WTF? How could anyone name Mariah and Celine as worst singers?! I never understood why so many people made fun of Celine and her singing. Sure, she was always a little too entusiastic and had a "spastic" way of performing, but people are idiots for not being able to differentiate between performance style and ACTUAL singing. Mariah is and will forever be known as one of the best singers in the world. Those "whistle tricks" she is famous for are amazing and un-replicable! I think it's because she's always had a voice that you actually had to like in order to appreciate. Thus, proves that personal taste really plays a big role in how people judge others. My friend says she's a bad singer because she simply doesn't like her voice, which couldn't be more wrong and actually kind of stupid if you think about.
YingLing, dear, Celine is Canadian, not French, but it was pretty close! ... |

AH! PART 3! HELLOO EVERYBODY!
Yes yes, fresh start. I should stop spamming. Can I ask something? Are there the GYAO interviews in the TVXQ D/L section? I've been looking for them, and I still am very AFRAID of experimenting with clubbox, so I'm missing out on a lot of stuff... >_< THANKYOU! |
