Gong Li's Japanese geisha photo shoot raises the ire of netizens
Source: Northeast
Date: Tuesday December 23, 2008
Translated by Initial E @ http://asianfanatics.net

Gong Li (巩俐), who has not been seen for a long time, recently did an autumn photo shoot for a fashion magazine in Beijing. She appeared to be very cold in front of the camera, but when the photographs were revealed, it incurred a lot of criticism from the netizens. Many of them wrote that this photo shoot of Gong Li is like a 'Singaporean acting as a Japanese'. Looks like the fact that Gong Li registered to be a Singaporean is still unforgiven by many netizens.

It is reported that this photo shoot's theme has got to do with the late autumn. In the pictures, other than wearing many different elegant clothes, she also dressed up like a geisha, and like a rich wife.

Maybe because of the fact that Gong Li has become a Singaporean, after the photos were released, she came under the netizens attacks. "How hard her face contours look! Not soft at all! She's not even considered as pretty!" and "She has already become a Singaporean, why does she want to act like a Japanese?"

Gong Li looks well off for her current age, wonder what keeps her looking so young?
Seems like the netizens are out to get her cause of the citizenships...haha

Lace
I'm equally offended as well. The comments make it sound like we're not supposed to have anything to do with Japanese stuff :(

I'm tired of the comments made by this people. Her choice to become a Singaporean has been finalised, so they should seriously stop harping on it already. What's more, it's just a photoshoot. Chill, man.

if they don't like the fact that she's wearing geisha clothing, then they could just think of it as traditional chinese clothing (tang dynasty).. lol
nevertheless, she looks amazing in them. don't know why people are complaining.

I don't understand why netizens have to be so offended over her choice of being a Singaporean. I'm seriously very offended by their endless comments of Gong Li this, Gong Li that...

There's too much national pride...didn't that start wars? Anyways, Singaporean or not, you can't deny her beauty and why does dressing up in a photo shoot have to do with anything. It's simply clothing. It doesn't define who a person is. I think she looks lovely.

She looks great--even better than in Memoirs of a Geisha! I also wish these netizens would get over the citizenship thing. Isn't her husband Singaporean? What's the big deal about getting the home citizenship of your spouse?

She is really pretty whatever she's wearing...we should understand that those comments come only from those immature netizens and they do not speak for the majority...I wonder if they really know Gong Li or maybe they're just jealous of where she is right now...As for those netizens who post these remarks, here's an advice: Stop being regionalistic...we may speak different languages / dialects and my come from different countries but we are all citizens of this big wide world and if we can't get along with each other, what then are we?!

wth, why can't singaporean act like Japanese? dude, there are many chinese girls out there trying to act japanese too. Those netizens always over react on the dumbest subject. Why do they always think that they are so high and mighty and always get to step all over the celebrities. I bet 80% of them aren't very good looking either.

The whole controversy makes no sense. If outraged individuals want to complain about the content or style of the shoot (and it seems that they always do) their unhappiness should be directed toward the photographer, the editor of the article, the fashion editor of the magazine or even the stylist hired for the shoot. The person actually pictured in photos has almost no input regarding anything. While a star like Gong Li may (or her reps may) make some demands, they almost always center around the context of the article--where it is placed in the publication, who is on the cover (if not the star herself) and how it is publicized.
