Korean Horror Moves to New Haunted Territory

There is something afoot in Korean horror movies. From "Arang," to be released on June 28, via "Apartment," out in July, to "To Sir With Love," "Cinderella" and "Untold Story- The Red Forest" all to be released in August, indigenous horror movies have evolved to a higher level. In an effort to wash away the cheap shocker taint, the budgets are growing and the casts are becoming stellar. This summer, even moviegoers with sophisticated tastes are bound to find one good enough for them.

Quality Horror

Horror films have long been a gateway to success for new directors due to their relatively low budgets. If a W2-3 billion (US$1=\958) investment including marketing costs lured more than 1 million viewers, the movie was considered to have hit the jackpot. But the new slew of horror films are betting on quality. "To Sir With Love" cost W4.2 billion, "Apartment" W4 billion, "Arang" W4 billion and "Cinderella" W3.6 billion ? all pretty close to the average for Korean movies, which stands at some W4.5 billion.

More and more established directors are eyeing horror films as their next screen project. Ahn Byung-gi, well known for such horror films as "The Scissors" (2000), "Phone" (2002) and "Bunsinsaba" (2004) promises to "show people what real horror is" with "Apartment," the movie he directed based on a comic book. Bong Man-dae, who specialized in melodramas like "Sweet Sex and Love," has changed tack with "Cinderella." Dream And Pictures, the producer of "Arang," say horror films like "Phone" and "A Tale Of Two Sisters" have succeeded both in terms of quality and box office and even produced stars since 2000. As a result, there has been a growing perception that horror films can no longer stint on quality.

Quality Screamers

Time was when all horror movies had to do was make audiences grip their arm rests. Films like "Whispering Corridors" and "Bunsinsaba" cast teenage newcomers to do the screaming. But this year is seeing experienced actresses who built their career in more respectable films and TV dramas, from Ko So-young in "Apartment" to Song Yun-a in "Arang" and Do Ji-won in "Cinderella", turn to gruesome tales. Ko So-young surprised a few people by choosing a horror film as her first movie in four years since “Double Agent” in 2002.

Fearsome Spaces

Earlier in the decade, "The Scissors" (2000), "Phone" (2002) or "The Red Shoes" (2005) were all about objects with curses attached. This year, the horror is in confined spaces. "Apartment" uses an ordinary contemporary dwelling to scare us witless. In "Cinderella," it is the house where a plastic surgeon lives with her daughter, and "To Sir With Love" is set in the villa of an elementary school teacher where her students get together. "Arang" makes terrifying use of a salt store in the country. "Objects are good for causing immediate horror, but ordinary spaces in our daily lives have a slower, more indirect psychological horror," says a staffer at IM Pictures, the producer of "Apartment."

The Lasting Grudge

One constant, however, is the grudge motivating indigenous Korean ghosts. "Arang" is a new take on the traditional story of a vengeful ghost girl told in North Gyeongsang Province. And if there are no ghosts, it is still the desire for retribution that motivates the evil goings-on. "Korean audiences still want to see traditional ghosts in horror movies. Slasher or hard-gore movies with their relentless splatter of blood don't do well here," says a member of the "Arang" crew.

some news on ARANG

Despite getting negative reviews, it seems like 아랑 (Arang), the first horror film of the season, will not do too badly at the box office. Figures for June 28 and 29 were released, and the film starring Song Yoon-Ah and Lee Dong-Wook landed at second place behind predictable leader Superman Returns. Released over 227 nationwide screens, the film sold a total of 113,000 tickets so far, with 33,000 in the capital. Predictably poor the results for the 'adult' animation 아치와 씨팍 (Aachi & Ssipak) with 27,900 tickets, continuing domestic animation's bad luck at the box office. Although by the end of the week Superman Returns should still be on top, it looks like the horror will continue to do decently, just like Yoo Ha's 비열한 거리 (A Dirty Carnival), which clearly suffered competition from Hollywood blockbusters and the World Cup, but is slowly improving its score thanks to positive word of mouth. Of course the other big news of the day is that production in all of Chungmuro will be halted for three days, with thousands of film people participating in street demonstrations, as today marks the official reduction of the screen quota to 73 days per year. LDW's First Film Production ARANG doing well in Box Office

LDW and SYA's first collaboration together indeed did not disappoint fans. The premier attracted more than 42,000 viewers the 1st day, which is a relatively good response, making LDW and SYA really shocked and surprised.

ARANG started its screening in 227 theatres in Korea and the ticket sales have been satisfactory, only trailing behind Superman by a a small merge. SYA felt very happy with the results and comments from audiences and viewers that the ending of ARANG was very touching.

[NEWS]: SYA and LDW's Movie ARANG, anticipated to surpass 1 Million Won Ticket Sales Barrier

IPB Image

Song Yun Ah and Lee Dong Wook's new Movie ARANG is still amidst promotion at the moment. Despite having tough competition from Hollywood Blockbuster Movies Superman and Pirates of the Carribean, ARANG still continued to fare well in the theatres, receveing immense support and viewership in local theatres. Reports stated that an amount of 860,000 ppl have viewed/seen ARANG.

ARANG is Korea's first summer horror flic, starred by SYA and LDW. The movie fared well in its premier week grossing up to 230,000 Won of ticket sales and topped the 2nd spot after Superman. Meanwhile, "Apartment", another summer horror flic which came out last week also gained pretty good results with 150,000 Won of ticket sales.

SYA was very happy seeing that ARANG has hope of surpassing the 1 Million barrier. Meanwhile, besides urging ppl to support ARANG she also expressed her support and urge to others to support local movies as the screen quota for local movies has gradually decreased this year.

Julian on Wowowee and The Buzz

Julian of My Girl is here in Manila! The first and true home of Asianovelas in the Philippines, ABS-CBN brings the viewers of the hit Koreanovela closer to their favorite international stars! Supporters of actor Lee Dong Woo aka Julian, swarmed the ABS-CBN compound for just a glimpse of the Korean hottie. His shy smile and gracious answers during his press conference yesterday made him more endearing to his followers specially the females.

Staying in the country for 4 days, Dong Wook is also in the Philippines to promote his very first movie, Arang. The suspense thriller, which also stars famous Korean actress Song Yun Ah, is based on a Korean folklore about a Minister's daughter who died defending her honor when one of her father's servants attempted to rape her. Arang will retell the tale in a more up to date setting. Lee Dong Wook will be playing one of the detectives who got involved in solving the case. He describes his character as very complex, a far cry from his character Julian on My Girl. It was psychologically hard and it was a great challenge for him as an actor. He thinks his personality is more like Julian, a bit serious and ‘shy around girls.’ His most memorable scene on My Girl was when Jasmine or actress Lee Da Hae gets the star on top of the Christmas tree. "It was really freezing that day. My hands and feet were frozen!" he shared. "But I also enjoyed our kissing scenes." he added playfully.

At only 25, Lee Dong Wook has come far from his debut as an actor when he was just 18 years old. He humbly described himself as a ‘simple high school boy’ in his junior year. He wasn’t blessed like other actors who easily entered the business when they were discovered by talent scouts. He enrolled in acting school and went to one audition after the other until he landed an acting job. "Acting isn’t really easy. That’s why I am always trying my best," he told the press through an interpreter. He likes reading books or spending time with friends, like actor Jo Insung (Memories of Bali and Spring Day), whom he has known for 7 years.

Lee Dong Wook was also pressed on his knowledge about the Philippines and he promptly answered, "Cebu. Boracay." He also shared that he practiced a few Filipino phrases a few days before but since he was placed on the spot he sort of forgot it. But before the presscon ended he managed to recover from his mental block and was able to muster "Mahal ko kayo" and "Salamat" which got cheers from the crowd. He also answered a fast ‘No.’ to the question if he has a girlfriend. This time he got all the girls in the room giddy. He then apologized for not being able to shake hands with everyone for he had a workout injury 3 days before his scheduled trip and had it in a cast.

His entourages’ next stop would be Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan. But not before he visits Willie Revillame on Wowowee tomorrow July 22 and has a one on one interview with Kris Aquino on The Buzz on Sunday. Don’t dare miss the Korean heartthrob’s appearances on ABS-CBN!

i've read some korean reviews about this movie and i found out that critics give high credits to this movie!...

i know it's not only worth a watch because lee dong wook is here but i've always known that koreans really do make awesome horror films and yeah, i never missed a single horror movie that they've shown here in the philippines. indeed, they are all worth a watch.

so i know this one will also be, not only because of the actor! of course, lee dong wook will add up to the worthiness of this movie! haha!

i hope i can get it on DVD! biggrin.gif

Finished watching this movie just now and must say it was kind of complicated movie. It is weird in the beginning and gets more clear at the end,but still the ending is unclear to me. There were only few scary scenes in it, overall it was kind of boring to me.

Does anybody understand the ending? And still unclear is the woman never found out the guy with the scar on this hand.

i think you have to get used to it...i mean most korean horror films are very "twistee" and you won't understand anything if you won't watch from the beginning up to the end...

i haven't seen this movie yet but i've seen a lot of horror films from korea that i think i would endure this one... biggrin.gif

There are those who compared this to the Japanese Movie *The Ring* but you have to watch it to know that while they do share te same scare factor, the storyline is a little more complicated. I am neutral when it comes to this genre, not to say that I didn't enjoy it but it is just another thriller in my book. Worth a watch though ...

well compared to the ring, arang is more on the story, not the horror thing...

because as i've analyzed the movie, the appearances of the ghosts are only die to hallucinations, the main point in this movie is the search for justice...

as for the ring, it's really pure horror!... biggrin.gif

One thing I don't understand is the ending. Was the painting they never found the painting of "dead mother" Also who is the guy at the end that gets attacked? Was that the guy that the female detective was looking for?

I have watched the censored version and kind of fuzzy and unclear abt. the plotline...should buy it later on DVD to sample the whole affair of ARANG....it is in the likes of X-FileMULDER & GILIAN...But I do like LDW in his scruffy looks....hopefully more meaty role for him in days to come....

A PATH TO GREATER STARDOM is dedicated to him and him only!!!!

i have watched the movie. its good. nice acting from Lee Dong Wook. just one advice, if you'll watch it, you should give extra attention because the story is very complicated and there's alot of twist. but its worth it in the end.

the guy who was attacked in the end is the head of policeman. he's the reason why the girl (LDW's first love) got trapped in that salt house. the girl was raped and got pregnant. the rapists (4 good looking men, who was killed one by one when they received the e-mail) asked help from the policemen. to make the girl stop, he trapped her in that house till she died... and the rest is you have to watch...
