Hong Kong director Stanley Tong has been preparing for his new project Lady General Hua Mulan, ever since his latest film The Myth, starring action hero Jackie Chan and Korean favorite Kim Hee-Seon, was a big success. It is reported that the director has commenced selection for the leading roles of the US$20-million blockbuster, and he recently set his sights on the hottest Chinese star in Hollywood, Zhang Ziyi. An assistant to the director confirmed that the shooting will formally begin in Canada and China in October, and that Zhang Ziyi is currently reading the script and has not yet made a decision. The story is based on the historic Nan-Bei Dynasties period and embodies the popular folk tale entitled Hua Mulan. The film will present a variety of styles, from moving love scenes to huge war scenes. kfccinema |

hmm I wonder how a non-animated flick will take to the crowds?
if Zhang Ziyi is cast as Mulan I think that would be the right move. She is well known internationally now and very popular so that should ensure some box office success. Should be interesting. I hope the storyline is decent. |

Interesting. I loved the animated flick. Well the first one anyhow. I think casting Zhang Ziyi as Mulan would work out well. She is a known commodity and this should translate well in the box office and could be amplified further if the movie and storyline is good too. Undoubtedly this could be worth a watch.

She doesn't fit the image of Mulan that I have. Hope someone else will get the role. No offense, I like her and everything but when I look at her, I just can't imagine that she is Mulan.

i think Zhang Ziyi will do a great job seeing as how she does a lot a martial art films anyways. i was just wondering if they have chosen a lead act yet. i hope it is someone big (like how they use jacky for the myth).

got to agree with all of you that she just doesnt fit the role.....why cant they got other actress?
In couching tiger, she look really too feminine dress as a guy. Defintely not the one who looks anything like a general. Hua Mulan doentneed to be very pretty. She's somehow a girl that got in the army un-notice for so many years. Zhang Zi-yi is a bad choice. Only western audience loves her |

This would be a very interesting movie for Zhang to be in. I hope she does decide to do this role. I can see her as the character mulan.

that might be interesting. Hopefully they keep the original story line of fa mulan instead of butchering it.

Ziyi Zhang's a good choice, since she can probably do a lot of the choreography for the battle scenes, and she's also pretty. Can't wait to see the live-action movie. I hope it's a lot better than the Disney interpretation.

hmm ZYY is not the tight person for the role imo
yes she is known internationally but she looks too 'fragile'?? I like her and all but she doesnt fit the whole Mulan idea. Other well known like Lucy Liu..not good either I dunno, but I think Kelly Hu might be a better choice. She looks feminine but gives me a stronger image. She was awesome in Xmen so why not her. Or just find a total new face. The story of Mulan on its own can pull enough ppl so why not find someone unknown but more fitting of the role |

i'm getting sick of zhangziyi, they should give the chance and role to another actress, she gets too many high profile roles, she's too skinny and fragile looking. And its suppose to be a tough tomboy role. why don't they give it to anita yuen, but i think she did a china mulan series already?

Yeah I guess she can show off her boyish good looks lol. Haha jk, I remember one movie when she could have probably passed off as a little boy maybe. It was in Legend of Zu when she had dirt and stuff all over her face, pretty good concealer if you ask me haha. But I kid, she would be great as Mulan.

She does has that Mulan look to her. It'll be an interesting movie to see. Mulan would just be another ancient movie but just filmed in Hollywood instead of HK/China. So it shouldn't be a problem for asians. Wonder how other peeps would take it though.
