From Screen Debut to a Celebrated Star
![]() Vicki Zhao, or Zhao Wei, gained her first experience in front of the camera in 1993 when she was chosen as an extra in 'Hua Hua', a film starring Gong Li. After that, Zhao decided to pursue an acting career. In the years that followed, Zhao was finally given her first leading role in a series called 'Sisters in Beijing' after playing minor roles in various TV series and films. It was there that she was spotted by famous Taiwan romance writer Chiung Yao, who was looking for a lead in her TV series 'Princess Pearl', or known as 'Huanzhu Gege' in Chinese. Vicki Zhao rose to stardom after landing the leading role in that popular series of Chiung Yao. Following her role in 'Princess Pearl', Zhao became a prominent actress in China. In 2008, Zhao was cast as Sun Shangxiang in John Woo's blockbuster 'Red Cliff' and its sequel. While in early 2009 she will play the role of Hua Mulan in Jingle Ma's film 'Mulan'. |

Vicki Zhao is my all time favourite Chinese actress. She is so pretty and I started to admire her when I watch the action film called 'So Close' along with Shu Qi and Karen Mok. I look forward to listen to her songs too.

It's nice to come across someone with the same opinion. At first, I was hoping that HXM can play the role opposite of Vicki in Mulan, but I guess because of the recent popularity of Painted Skin, Chen Kun has more consideration for the role instead. |

Donnie Yen again?? Painted Skin Donnie Yen n Hua Mulan got Donnie Yen too right? n next movie also Donnie Yen? cant they choose other actor? No, Donnie Yen is not in Mulan. Since this is an ancient fighting movie and is directed by a HK director Daniel Lee (Dragon Squad, Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon), Donnie Yen participation is not too surprising to me, personally. Hopefully, this time we will get to see more fighting scenes than that of Painted Skin. |

Hi everyone. I am new. I just recently watched the movie Painted Skin. I watched it 3 times because there were some stuff I was not clear about it. (I like it alot and I am fan of Zhao Wei). But there are still some things I am not 100% sure of. 1. General's feeling for his wife, was it true love or just duty loyalty of husband. 2. General feelings toward the demon, was it lust or was it love? It bothers me because I can't tell for sure if the General's feelings? Did he love the demon or his wife. There is some part you think you know and then they keep you guessing at the end when he said to his wife"Whether you are demon or human, I love you. I love you forever". Then he turns around and says to the demon "I love you, except I already have PeiRong". I guess it's open to interpretation, but just want other opinons. What do you guys think? |

Cast Promotes "Mulan" at Cannes
Monday May 18, 2009 China Director Jingle Ma and cast members Zhao Wei and Chen Kun attended a press conference on Saturday during the Cannes film festival, promoting the upcoming live action film "Mulan". Zhao Wei, who played the title role of Hua Mulan, said "Mulan" was her most toilful film ever. "I got up at 6:30 every morning, and had either fighting scenes or crying scenes for all day. It was a big challange," the actress said. However, Zhao Wei thought she's lucky to get such a role. She said she admires the courage of Mulan. "The role requires a great confidence. I feel myself getting more optimistic and confident." Actor Chen Kun portrays a general who fell in love with Mulan and assisted her with her fighting career. "I found that behind a great woman there is also a great man," he said. A trailer was projected at the press conference, in which Zhao Wei shows "explosive acting," according to a report of sina.com. Yu Dong, president of the publisher Poly-Bona Film, told the web portal that they have made deals with buyers from German, Turkey and Middle East, while publishing in France and English-speaking countries are still undergoing negotiation. Stars shine as film festival opens
By Xu Wei | 2009-6-14 | source: http://www.shanghaidaily.com/sp/article/20...icle_404085.htm ![]() From left: Taiwan actress Lin Hsi Lei, Chinese mainland actress Zhao Wei, Hollywood sweetheart Halle Berry, Chinese mainland actresses Zhang Ziyi and Zhang Yuqi pose on the red carpet in front of the Shanghai Grand Theater last night for the opening of the Shanghai International Film Festival. Sixteen films will compete for the Golden Goblet, top prize at the festival which runs till June 21. A series of events to be held during the festival includes the Asian New Talent Award, film forums on the domestic movie industry, an international film panorama with screenings of hundreds of films from more than 70 countries and regions as well as a film market which will serve as a bridge for buyers, producers and distributors from both home and abroad./Photograph byDong Jun THE stars came out in their hundreds for the opening of the 12th Shanghai International Film Festival at the Shanghai Grand Theater last night. More than 300 famous names from home and abroad walked the red carpet outside the theater. Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry, in an elegant pink evening dress, received a warm welcome from local people and she told them: "I love you" in Chinese. Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi also attended with the crew of her latest romantic comedy "Sophie's Revenge." The festival's grand opening also attracted British heartthrob Clive Owen, American musician Quincy Jones, Italian actress Maria Cucinotta and Chinese action star Donnie Yen. Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle is chairing the seven-member jury panel this year. It also includes veteran Chinese mainland filmmaker Huang Jianxin, American actress Andie MacDowell, Hong Kong director Andrew Lau and South Korean producer Oh Jung-wan. After saying "hello" in Chinese, Boyle expressed his gratitude for the privilege to attend the festival. It was, he said, a wonderful platform to explore new talents. "You're all important persons, but the most important person is not here," Boyle said. "There is a kid somewhere in China, or somewhere in the world who dreams of telling stories that we haven't imagined yet." Berry received an award for outstanding achievement in world cinema. Thrilled by the honor, she said she could only stay in Shanghai for 12 hours because she had a baby at home. "Otherwise, I would stay at least one week to discover the city's charms," Berry said, adding: "I will come again for next year's Shanghai World Expo." The award for outstanding achievement in Chinese cinema went to director John Woo. This year, 16 films are in competition for the festival's top prize, the Golden Goblet, including "Empire of Silver" by Chinese director Yao Shuhua and German filmmaker Christoph Rohl's "A Piece of Me." Veteran Chinese filmmaker He Ping's latest ancient war epic "Wheat" was the festival's opening film. This post has been edited by lindsay: Jun 15 2009 2 13 PM |
