Wow, I can't believe I can still remember this series.
I was around 9 - 10 years old that time and that show was really touching though. I wondered if anyone remembered that?
the 'sau hau - where japanese people attacked china, and sau san's husband has to go into army and defend the country. Sheren tang played as Sau Hau's sister-in-law (sausan's husband's brother's wife) hehe
It's really a touching story.

Also starring Amy Chan.
Here is a picture of the series:

this is an extremely long series - close to 100 episodes. I think the front part's still ok but after they add in the wars, the memory loss & so on it just gets more & more draggy & confusing. but i like the part about sheren tang & her bf (I can't remeber the name but think it's Lam Wai).

I have the series but never got around to finishing it. It just drags and drags with typical sub plots. It's too melodramatic to my liking. n_thumbdown.gif

No, I think the Hk see lai's would have sued if Amy didn;t get her man (it nearly happened when she was in TVB's "Fate of the Clarovoyant" when she almost didnt get her husband back after he left her some other woman). Amy always her her man. cool.gif

Maggie and Steve got divorced, and Maggie ended up with Steve's army buddy. She also had this Jap commander obsessed with her. wacko.gif

I thought out of the three wives, I liked Sheren the best even though she was quite annoying at the start. Sheren showed a lot of passion and independence, and the wisdom to let go when it was no longer hers to have. She truly knows what she wants, is not restricted by stupid rules like not remarrying and helping the Japs (as a cover to help chinese escape), searches for her own happiness, and is a great business woman. I thought her "love" with Steve was weird, and liked it a whole lot better when it was with Lam Wai, who was way more worth her love. yeah.gif

Maggie was just too whining and annoying for me to like at all. She latches onto her husband to keep him away from his wife even though she knows she is a concubine. She is selfish and never shown a moment of guilt or felt sorry for Amy and Sheren. No wonder the family hates her. Lucky they divorced. Like Sheren, she tries to search for her own happiness, but the way she does it is so annoying and indirect. She's quite boring as well even tho they shoved her into the spy role. wacko.gif

Amy is too nice and perfect a character that I couldn't really feel for her. I mean I felt sorry for her everytime her husband turned up with a new wife, and when she lost her first baby, but her thoughts are always so focussed and unchanging that it irritates me after ep 30 because she seems to have no internal conflicts from there on. n_thumbdown.gif

I didn't think her husband was that good a man anyway to have three women fight over him. HE has everything, looks, brains, parent's love, success in business, girl's love, etc... but he was too perfect in a way as well that no development could be made and he got boring. He also has this prinicple thing which annoys me heaps, e.g. he refused money from Sheren because she worked with the Japs tho he knew that she was real helping chinese militants escape. they way he acted was like he thought she was dirty or something. It irked me. dry.gif

I prefered flawed chracters like his bro, Gilbert Lam who came from a young uncaring unloved kid with unresolved issues with his father, to a man who took up the burden of supporting the whole family, learned to love his father, learned responsibility and became a man who no longer stood in his perfect bro's shadow. His love life is also interesting as well since he breaks the taboo of falling in his sis-in-law and has sever conflicts with himself over it, then loves an ex-prostitute which is another taboo, but he still persists with determination and finally wins acceptance to marry his true love. infatuated.gif

Lam Wai was also an interesting character as well. He had serious issues with his mother, went through a lot of ups and downs in both life, romance and business, and he turned otu to be a very caring man and son and father as well as patriot and the way he died was just so ironic (killed by chinese mistaking him for being a jap follower when he just saved hundreds of anti-Jap members leave to HK). Tragic. weeping.gif

Even the jap guy who wanted to marry Maggie was more interesting than Steve Ma's character since he was debating whether to love or not love Maggie. The dude (Steve Ma) just lacks sparks in his story. No idea why every loves him. cluebat.gif

There was also a lot of boring characters like Seung Tin Or and Amy's uncle and his GF, Steve's mum, Steve's army buddy, Sheren's mum, Gilbert's friend and his wife, which were all quite boring and predictable characters . The interesting ones were Amy's 2nd sis who had such a tragic life, Lee Heung Kum, Amy's 3rd sis, Gilbert's mum and dad.

Oh man.. Sheren was my favorite character in this series.. she was the only reason why I re-watched this series recently too..

Her character was so great.. she was deeply flawed-- a bit selfish, impetuous, headstrong, stubborn, etc.. but she had a good heart. I like her character more than Amy's character because she seemed more genuine and real.. Amy's character was too perfect..

I also loved her relationship with Lam Wai. It was not a head-over-heels love at first but was one that was based on trust, friendship, and caring. Later on.. I believe it became more of a head-over-heels love. When he died.. I couldn't stop crying for Sheren's character..

I didn't like Maggie's character all that much either.. I felt like her storyline was kind of unnecessary and the story would have been good even without her as a source of conflict.

All in all.. this was a great series!! Acting was top-notch, casting was great and the story was interesting. There were some slow parts.. but what series doesn't??

I saw that serie. Watched it fully and unlike my sis xxSerenity, I loved it !!!! lmao.gif

Honestly this is the kind of serie that I like despite its endless episodes. Some part was surely draggy and unesteresting. Mine was Steven with Maggie. I simply can't resist fast-forwarding their part. Simply not my taste. But I enjoyed everything else. It was an ATV production. One huge production. With some visages that I know and some that I don't. Nevertheless I appreciate it. The main thing that has deeply affected me was it soundtrack. Their melody simply fitted with the scene. and used rightfully. There's not much serie when the frame is perfectly sync with the sound but in this one. It did perfectly well. I am amased of their efforts. They used instrumentals, sad sounds to the extend of making us get into the story. Despite few goofs in the production. The soundtrack was beautifully made. The themesong, heard it is sung by Amy herself ( can't confirm tho ) was great.

The casting was good enough to make me watch from the first episode till the end. At the last episode I ended hating two characters: Steven ( Amy's hubby ) and Maggie ( Steven's third wife ). Everyone gives a fine performance and has contribute to this serie greatly.

The storyline was a litle complexe tho. But it was multiple generation so it was to be expected in order to create drama and interest.

But I think nearly all characters in the serie was well-developped. From main cast to support actors, they were well-written.

It's a long serie. Probably not for everyone has it's very dramatic. But I gave myself time to enjoy it and I don't have regret.

See it for youself.

LOLZ..
Yeah, it was like 10+ years ago that the series was released. I watched it when I was like 9.

Yeah, Sheren Tang protrays as Amy's husband's second "wife" (I put this in quote because their marriage wasnt even an official marriage, its more like a mistress). Yes, Sheren had a child (girl) with Steven, and Amy wouldve too, but because of Sheren, Amy lost the baby. It was one of the saddest scenes!

Sheren ended up marrying another guy, after realizing that no matter how she tries, Steven only truly loves Amy. The same goes with Maggie, who married another guy, after realizing, too, that Steven, after recovering his memory, only loves his real official, and lovely wife, AMY.

This is such a great series. I love Amy's character, but if only she'd end up with Gilbert, it'll be outstanding, not just good.

Amy's character is way too good to be true. lolz

Amen to that.

My grandmother loves this series, but I think it gets reaaaaally slow after the first story arcs. I mean, I tried rewatching it recently and I was interested at first. Then it was just like, I had to fast-forward through the rest. There was just waaay too much angst.

I found the memory lost kind of ridiculous. I mean, it's like they keep hinting at a happy ending but then bad stuff happens right when things start to look up. Maybe that's okay for a while, but it gets boring!

Gilbert Lam is my favorite male character in the series. His love for Amy (his sister-in-law) is undenable, I felt sorri for him. LOLZ! It would be nice if Amy fell for him, though it'll ruin her loyalty characteristic.

Amy Chan did an amazing job in here, its no wonder that she won the best actress award for her character Hau Sau. She's amazing!

Sheren didnt do a bad job either, but she did start to get annoying after awhile. I got kinda feed up with her character every now and than. Especially when she thinks shes all that. Argh, that's annoying!

I do, because I do that too. LOLZ!

I am a big fan of pre-modern series - the storyline is so geniune and surreal. These types of series are so much more realistic and acceptable than ANCIENT series, especially with the flying warriors, FAKE. Those kind of series are only good for a one time entertainment, but pre-modern series set during the War World time are believible and great. Especially during the time of war such as now, the storyline of how lovers are seperated from each other, touches others heart. AMAZING!

ATV rocks at making these series, though its very lenghtly, its ok, its worth!

Amy Chan and Gilbert Lam, IMO, were the best!

one of atv popular series. even tvb can't beat this one.

Very TRUE!

Even though ATV produces alot of crappier series than TVB, once they make a good one, its unbeatable!

That stands true for The Good Old Days, even today, after a decade ago, the series still has a positive effect on all its audiences. If there is a single soul who comes close to even hating it, than they must be heartless and blind. The series is amazing and the storyline is so similar to everyone's life during war times, everyone who has gone through tough times, war times, or love issues can relate to the series. ITS SO HUMANE!

An EXCELLENT PRODUCTION and CAST!
