I have seen lots of people on here say that they are Singaporean or know someone who is. Don't you know that there is no Singaporean race? It does not exist. All the people that live in Singapore are races from other places. In Singapore there are lots of Chinese & Malay people. People that think they are Singaporean are really Chinese or Malay.

yes singapore is a country of immigrants since 1819.
QUOTE
Singapore has been a country of immigrants since Sir Stamford Raffles founded the island in 1819. Though the Chinese group is clearly the main ethnic category, there are no precise figures available about the exact population breakdown by ethnic groups.

The only official ethnic breakdown from the "Census 2000" shows : Chinese 77%, Malay 14%, Indian 7.6%, other 1.4%, (100% being Singapore citizens + "resident" foreign population).

Such breakdown does not take into account the "non-resident" foreign population which is particularly important given Singapore's size, accounting for up to 18.3% of the total population. Official figures from Singstat show that non-resident population has increased from 30,900 in 1970 to 797,900 in 2005, which translate roughly to a 24-fold increase in 35 years, or from 1% of the population in 1970 to 18.3% in 2005. Despite this huge increase, no further breakdown is given by Singstat.

Ethnic Chinese are probably only a minority group among "non-residents". Among "non-residents" are noticeable communities such as maids, perhaps numbering 150,000, mostly from the Philippines, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. Other communities include those from South Asia subgroups from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka employed as low-skilled workers, and others, including expatriates, whether westerner or Asian, for example, Japanese and South Korean communities.

This official breakdown could be further categorised into subgroups by religion, original region, first or secondary immigration from Malaysia, Indonesia or other origin (for Chinese and Indian groups particularly).

Following figures show that the ethnic composition of the resident population has been stable over the last 30 years, while non-resident population has boomed.
Ethnic composition (%) of resident population Ethnic 1970 1980 1990 2000
Chinese 77.0 78.3 77.7 76.8
Malays 14.8 14.4 14.1 13.9
Indians 7.0 6.3 7.1 7.9
Others 1.2 1.0 1.1 1.4

Note: No breakdown by ethnicity is released for the non-resident population.
Part of non-residents in total population 1970 1980 1990 2005
Resident (=citizens+PR status) 98.5% 94.5% 89.8% 81.7%
Non-resident 1.5% 5.5% 10.2% 18.3%

I am a singaporean.

Singapore is a multi-cultural society and comprises of ethnic groups such as Chinese, Malay, Indian, Euroasians and of course foreigners.

I am a Chinese and my ancestors are from China. But I don't think of myself as a part of the Chinese population in China, but rather as a Singaporean.

Well since someone brought this up.

Then there are also other races that are actually not races such as:

Americans (British)

Canadians (British and French)

Australians (British)

Greenlanders (Danish and Norwegian)

Icelanders (Norwegian)

We often say I'm Singaporean when asked to show that's where we come from, nobody would think of races when someone ask you who are you? Naturally ppl would think of their nationality first.

TRIPxCORE, if you are an american would you say that you are British when asked who are you? or if you are Canadian, would you say that you are French or British when asked who are you?

What do you have against the term: Singaporean?

You are not Singaporean. There is no such thing. You're Chinese and thats it. You dont have to be from China to be Chinese. Your race is Chinese, there is no Singaporean race. You're a Chinese person from Singapore.

You can say you're Singaporean to show thats where you come from but not use it as your race.

Oh? Quite the contrary. I do have something to say. Besides that, why are you getting so mad? What I am saying is 100% truth.

I never say my race is American. I am Italian. I am an Italian/American. I say it that way to show race, then show country. So if you wanted to say you're Chinese/Singaporean, then that would be fine.

I have nothing against the term Singaporean but people using it in this way makes them seem ignorant to the truth and I am helping them discover the truth.

Didn't you see the word [[IF]]?

Italy has different races such as Roman and Etruscan (I'm only naming two) in the past and made up of city-states so is it ok to say I'm a Roman Italian or I'm a Etruscan Italian, or can I say I'm a Venetian Italian? (as I heard Italians identify themselves closely with a particular region of Italy). I don't think the Italians would do that. They would just say I'm Italian, that is the point I'm getting at.
By saying you are an Italian/American, you are only saying nationality not race.

Trying to say you're a Roman Italian would be getting way too specific. A persons race comes from a country, not a city. The point I am making is that there is no Singaporean race. There are plenty of Chinese or Malays that come from Singapore but they are not racially Singaporean.

Okay, maybe I didn't express myself clearly in my previous post. In the first place, I have never confuse nationality with my race.

When I stated "I am a singaporean.", I was referring to my nationality. And when I said "But I don't think of myself as a part of the Chinese population in China, but rather as a Singaporean." I meant I don't see myself as part of the population in China but rather the chinese population in Singapore. Maybe I should have been more specific.

Alright? And what do you mean by there are no such thing as singaporeans? You are talking to one in fact.

Well I didn't say that Singaporean is a race, maybe other people do.
Whether a person's race come from his/her country or contient depends on your definition of the term 'race'.

In everyday speech, race often describes populations better defined as ethnic groups such as the Hispanic or Latino or Chinese or Malay are considered races.
(I would prefer to say I'm a Singaporean Chinese}

In other views on race, people of the world are classified as Europeans, Caucasians, Asians, Africans, Native American (pardon me if I left out some)

To you TRIPxCore, your definition of race is of ethnic groups. If the billions of people out there does not reject the term 'singaporean', there's nothing wrong with it.

People often say, for example: I'm Asian, or I'm European when asked for their races, don't they?

[Don't insult my nation.......if you are implying that our nation is only a city and could not be called a country, Then the modern Vatican City State should be called the Vatican City?]

You speak so much about "race." What is race anyways? It's a socially constructed term that bases its definition almost entirely on one's look. It's also open to interpretation so one person's definition of race may not directly coincide with another person's definition. Race does not have much basis scientifically speaking. You're also assuming that all these people who define themselves as "Singaporean" are using it to describe their racial makeup. I'm an American of Chinese descent. When I say I'm "Chinese," I'm talking about my ethnicity. When I say I'm "American," I'm talking about my nationality. I'm not talking about race either way. For all you know, people who call themselves "Singaporean" may just be defining their nationality. Your heavy emphasis on "race" is questionable.

Your first sentence is exactly what I am talking about. Whoever these people are that accept the term "Singaporean" as a race are incorrect.

Now, I am not insulting Singapore because of it's size or because it's only a city/state. Don't get me wrong here, I have no problem with Singapore. Actually, Singapore is one of my favorite places to go within Asia. I appreciate how clean it is, how modern it is and how efficient it is. Singapore is a leading example of what all SouthEast Asian countries should aspire to be.

I think I understand race in a broader sense. While you say you are Italian/American, I say you are white, not olive or mediterranean. While Singaporeans aren't "Singaporean", they are still Oriental - oops, ASIAN. Africans are black. So are those of African decent or mix, like Dominican Republic, Caribbean, etc.

Maybe I'm from the generation where you have Black, White and everything in-between. If you want to get into specifics, like Thailander, Filipino, Vietnemese, Greek, American, than that's nationality. At least, that's how I understand it. Hell, if we want to get into specifics, then I would be South Carolinian instead of Filipino-American. Either which way, it's a mouthful. Oriental is fine by me, but nowadays that offends so many people. Times change.

Hey you Half British or European to be exact. (I'm right)
What is Right and Wrong?
Right and Wrong is for people to definite for themselves.

What would happen to national loyalty is for example in China, when the other ethnic groups suddenly say I'm not chinese? then the national loyalty will be shattered.

How would you feel if the Black Americans suddenly say I'm African not Americans, or the White Americans saying I'm European not American or the Asian-Americans saying I'm Asian not American? Or the Native Americans in USA started to fight for independence again cause they feel that they are not Americans (as in USA not the contient name). Are you going to expel them? If you do the USA economy may fall as all Americans regardless of races helped to contribute to the USA economy. National Loyalty will be shattered to pieces and it will be a long time before National Loyalty will be back in one piece.

Why is it pointless? You started this topic... didn't you think anyone would respond? Italian is a nationality - not a race. You are white - that's a race. Singaporean is a nationality - not a race. The majority of them are of different nationalities to begin with (just like America), but they are Asian - that's a race.

You are right about them not being a race, but I think you're wrong about Italians being their OWN race. I'd even go so far as calling you Latin, but Italian isn't a race.

You should start calling yourself Roman or Latin, TRIPxCORE.
Be proud that you are a Roman because of the Mightly Roman Empire.

Forget about arguing. When ppl see you from your facial features, eye colour and hair color, the first thing they would say is that you are European.

Your race is European (the end and full stop), or would you like me to call you an African as all ppl first comes from Africa?

This is stupid ... !!! Yes ... ppl live in Singaporean are originated from other places but they are Singaporean in a whole ... So y they cant say they are Singaporean ..??? they nvr deny that they are not indian or chinese .. !!!

QUOTE(TRIPxCORE @ Jul 6 2006 3 03 AM)
It isn't really a big problem if you want to speak about yourself in an incorrect manner. Your mom can say she is Singaporean but technically she is wrong.
Yes, it does!
Beaten? I dont think so.

Look, people can say whatever they want to say about themselves but if a person wished to remain ignorant to the facts and call themselves something they are not, then so be it.

When I talk about myself to someone, I say I am from America but that I am 100% Italian inside. I tell it like it is!
I dont see any problem with his mom calling herself as Singaporean ... she can call herself Singaporean .. at the same time she can call herself Chinese ... there are no problem with it because she is a chinese who live in Singapore ... understand !!???

American is not British !!! they are originated from Britain last time but now they are called American now .. u understand past and present ... they are jus originated but they are not British anymore !!! They are American

QUOTE(TRIPxCORE @ Jul 7 2006 5 27 AM)
Everyone in this thread has a different opinion on what race, nationality or ethnicity should mean. This makes the debate impossible
You are the 1 who wrong .... I am very clear with it ....... Singaporean is nationality ... Chinese is races .. and that is the end of the story ...... do u think u understand more about Singaporean and Chinese than a Singaporean Chinese ...???

There is no race such as Singaporean
Because it's not a race its your nationality
Its an indication of where you're from

Race is Chinese Malay Eurasian yadda yadda
Its and indication of your descent and culture

People normally ask you where you're from not what race you are
When someone ask you what race you are wouldnt it be odd?

I do know the difference between Indonesia and India. Indonesia is a country below Singapore and India is all the way over by Pakistan. Then, if you don't think the racial makeup of a majority of Singapore's residents is either Chinese, Malay or Indonesian, then you are the one who is wrong. I made no mistake. I am 100% correct. No hard feelings. I am not trying to fight with you guys. I am pointing out a fact.

This whole topic, which I started, was about Singaporean not being a race or ethnicity. It had nothing to do with nationality. I am not debating nationality. If you wanted to say to someone your nationality was Singaporean, then thats fine. Just like I would say mine was American. But that isn't what my blood is.

This thread was started by me. The point I am making is that it is wrong for anyone to say they are racially or ethnically Singaporean. I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT NATIONALITY!!!!!!!!!

ALMOST every racially or ethnically ASIAN (not Indian) person in Singapore is either Chinese, Malay or Indonesian. Want proof? Let us reference the C.I.A. World Factbook:

Singapore was founded as a British trading colony in 1819. It joined the Malaysian Federation in 1963 but separated two years later and became independent. It subsequently became one of the world's most prosperous countries with strong international trading links (its port is one of the world's busiest in terms of tonnage handled) and with per capita GDP equal to that of the leading nations of Western Europe.

Ethnic groups:

Chinese 76.8%, Malay 13.9%, Indian 7.9%, other 1.4% (2000 census)

Thats it!
