I would go with Dell. They are cheaper. Right now they have a good deal on the inspiron 1505. As for the spec, if you go Intel, you would want the dual core, core duo, cpu, at least 512mb of RAM, DVD-writer, and 60 Gb or higher hard drive with at least 5400rpm and 8mb cache.

I would go with Dell just because they have coupons release every month. Sager and Alienware are also good to purchase from but rather expensive. If you want a kickass gamer laptop go with Sager or Alienware. If you want something cheap, go with Dell.

what kind laptop do u need? i already have used over 10 laptops. Once i didnt have a computer i choose a heavy, but a real good 1. I really watched the specification. Now i am using it for college and stuff. So my laptop now is a light one 1. A toshiba portege.
and also watch other upcoming brands like acer and asus. This post has been edited by rokuchi: Jun 5 2006 7 30 PM |

I'd rather go to a shop and check it out personally.
For me, a laptop has to be decent specifications (2ghz, 40gb, DVD RW) and definately quiet, or a fan that at least keeps it cool. |

the question is, what are your intention for the laptop. ie. dvd playback, photo editing, gaming, etc..
dell has all level of notebook for all those mentioned. |

everything you buy is guaged on your use for each. What do you plan to do with this laptop is a major consideration. If you're going for internet acess such as IM, searchin web, email then any ol' laptop will do, preferbly one with a built-in wireless so you don't need to buy one, but if you're going for gaming, you'll need high RAM, processor, and top of the line video card

Dell M1710 has the lastest graphic card but, price is over alittle over your price range.
as for you school work Dell E1510 will get the job done and is has performance for light gaming. |

a dell notebook just exploded during an international conference so u might want to reconsider
there is no real top notch brand all have their top models or weaker models. just look for what things u need and then make a comparison. because by the time some one shouts sony vaio dell, or samsung or toshiba comes with a better model so it's useless to ask for the best brand or best model there is only the most suitable model for your preference |

u can try toshiba or fujitsu. both of them give a good package including the spec and the cover liability as well.. dell also offers customization services which u might need to take consideration here..

it really is a matter of preference but if you are looking for a balance of performance, value etc. I would probably start at Dell. My latest preference is IBM but those are a little pricy.
Forgot to ask, what is the purpose of the laptop? School? Graphics? Server? Typical office work? This post has been edited by Asian-aholic: Jun 26 2006 3 59 PM |

Getting one under two kg's you will have to cut back on a lot of stuff like Media drives and screen size. Every brand has one 'lifestyle' notebook. You can configure Dell's through it's website. |

Internationally recognized as the best brands : Toshiba, IBM(Lenovo)
Give a chance to : Dell, Compaq/HP, Fujitsu Every manufacturer uses OEM parts sourced from vendors.... so if a particular notebook explodes....likely to be an issue with the battery.... Dell will surely recalll this particular batch and castigate this supplier....... Samsung laptop??? You've got to be kidding me.. |

I personally think that I would go for either Toshiba or Sony.. well, Sony is a lil bit more expensive than Toshiba... but it is still worth to give it a try... As for Toshiba, I m currently using one right one and it has been 5+ years old and still going steady... hehehe =)

I think you have to look into battery life as well , pretty important factor..
right now i'm trying to look for a laptop too. not sure where to look. so far only been looking at delll.... but i feel like i'm getting cheated from them.. things still look expensive.. for such cheap stuff. or i should say low #'s like the small hd space.. 60gig.. the ram.. erm what else. battery life. vid card? can't remmber anymore. |

I think the Dell XPS M1210 would fit your description and budget. Dell sells all sort of laptops, not just desktop replacement. The M1210 is 12.1" screen. It is 4.3 lbs, which is about 2Kg. You can get the Geforce 7400GS video card, not the best, but the latest series and better than the integrated graphic. Dell computers are not so bad. Although I don't really like the latitude series.

If you don't like Dell for what ever the reasons. You should go for HP, Sony, ASUS, Acer; those types of notebooks have the lastest technologhy and wide ranges if you a low-end or high-end system. I would recommed Panasonic Toughbook notebook is really good computer which wont take any kind of damage even water because it is protective.

If you are looking for a higher perfomance laptop. dell will have the best deal. For the more econmoy laptops its about the same everywhere. The dell battery problem was only for some batches of batteries. They aren't even in production anymore so it wasn't that big a deal.

I have a HP Laptop P4 3.0 HT, 60 GB, 512 Ram, 128 Mb Video, DVD Burner, 17" Widescreen. I use it for school but I like to watch movies and series when I'm bored. Cost me $1600 CAN. My laptop is really reliable and the big screen is nice when I'm doing stuff. I don't recommend getting Asus or Sony because of their price. A laptop with my specs at the time I bought my laptop would have costed me over $2000 CAN. Toshiba is a good brand to go with if your shopping with your wallet in mind. I bought an HP/Compaq laptop because my cousins have been using this brand of laptops for ages and I might as well follow suit. =)
Hope this information helps you! |

I'm going to a university this fall, and I would like to buy a laptop. Which would you guys recommend? It should be economical, under a $1000 preferably, but I wouldn't mind spending more as long as it's good and will last me four years. I don't need all the super hi-tech stuff, since the most I'll be doing on the laptop is schoolwork, surfing, and downloading and watching movies.
BTW, should I buy it online or at a store? thanks! |

If you don't mind getting a 2nd hand laptop, I think the seniors might want to sell off their laptops as some of them will be going back to their home countries. Or there might be nice offers on desktop pc.

Actually, I am just wandering what currency you are refering to regarding your $1000 budget and also are you a home student. Actually, if you are just doing normal stuff that u mention, any cheap available laptop will be sufficient actually. I will recommend you to buy new one actually rather than second hand one to avoid any problem unless you know the condition of the second hand laptop. |

Depending oh what you doing in university and what you WANT to do with the laptop, there are a lot of choices.
First, you have to set your budget. Second, declare what you want it to do. My opinions: 1. ULTIMATE - MACBOOK PRO or MACBOOK ( i know a lot of pple dont like MAC OS, but it can run Windows too) 2. EXTERIOR DESIGN - SONY VIAO SERIES 3. MULTIMEDIA - HP 4. GAMING - Alienware 5. CUSTOM - ASUS / ACER Laptops 6. BUDGET - there is no budget laptops sry, anything less than about $1000 is pretty much useless. they are only made for internet and word processing. Also, do not get Dells, even though alienware is now owned by dell, alienware has their own staff and stuff, so they still kinda make better quality stuff. Same with compaq and HP, HP is the better one. This post has been edited by Meteocre: Jul 29 2006 3 21 AM |

As of today nuthing is really worth getting since core 2 duo laptops are coming out and personally Core 2 Duo is the best now. If u had to get one then i reckon a Sony SZ or an Asus W or A series.
