movieXclusive ![]() Genre: Drama/Comedy Director: Law Wing-cheong Starring: Eason Chan, Miriam Yeung RunTime: - Released By: Shaw Opening Day: 28 June 2007 ![]() ![]() Synopsis: It is the summer of 1997, 27-year old Miu starts working as a fishmonger at Fortune Market to pay the heavy debts of her philandering father. She sets a 3-year plan for herself: before she turns 30, she shall clear her father’s debts, leave the wet market, find a man worthy of her and break the spell of her bad karma. No sooner has she set foot on the Markey than she finds herself at loggerheads with Mr Fish in neighboring stall. A fierce battle of survival is unleashed, only to turn into a mutual entente when the existence of Fortune Market is jeopardized by the aggressive emergence of supermarket mega-stores. In the end, they fail to save the market. But their camaraderie has blossomed into deeper feelings her each other, an unanticipated development Miu is not ready to embrace. When her father suddenly dies of a heart attack and the government’s plans to demolish Fortune Market, Miu decides to leave the market for good. Convinced that a new face will set her free from her ‘smelly’ past, she enrolls in a make-up course funded by the government. As she embarks on her new life as a make-up artist, the world indeed becomes, bigger, brighter and ‘cleaner’. Time flies, it’s the fall of 2005. After years of staying overseas, Uncle Chicken and Auntie Veggie finally returned to Hong Kong - to their beloved Fortune Market. Unfortunately, Uncle Chicken is very sick as age catches up on him… To protect him from disappointment, Mr Fish, Miu and Porky decide to gather all their former venders and mongers of Fortune Market to reinstate its glory! After years of shunning Fortune Market and love itself, Miu finally comes to an epiphany: criteria, identities and deadlines have no significance ultimately, what truly matters is finding this special someone whom you love and treasure… ![]() ![]() -------------------- The movie will be awesome with Miriam and Eason! I love to see the both of them on screen! They are hilarious together. Hopefully this movie will bring some hope to the Hong Kong box office... Support Miriam and Eason! Here's the theme song to the movie, by Miriam.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=STgDnv1cQsw I'm pretty sure its a rendition of an existing song, but I forgot who sang the original version. I think Miriam did a pretty good job on this rendition, not bad at all. |

I'm really looking forward to this movie!!! I love Eason + Miriam, but the movie itself looks good. It has that nostalgic HK feel to it, it's even reflected in Miriam's themesong (which is great). THe movie has a lot of vets and has good actors in Eason and Miriam.
I dunno but seeing Eason + Miriam as fishmongers is fresh and i like how Miriam is trying to move beyond the market, while that's been done a lot of times (moving beyond the class), I think with Johnnie To as producer..it will turn out well! Miriam has been moving towards more serious roles, a welcome sign! This post has been edited by themissingpiece: May 28 2007 5 55 PM |

It's heavily promoted in HK and for good reason, it reunites Eason and Miriam
At first I thought it was just a romantic comedy..but as I'm reading more about it, it looks better than just that. It also uses the 10 yr anniversary of HKSAR as a background. Love the scene in the trailer where Miriam has tears in her eyes..i love those silent tears scenes. Looks like a great drama, can't wait! |

Switfy Reviews "Hooked on You"
HOOKED ON YOU is the second Milkyway Image production I saw in two weeks (the first one was the entertaining EYE IN THE SKY). This Miriam Yeung - Eason Chan starrer is produced by Johnnie To and directed by Lau Wing-Cheong (who did the surprisingly good 2 BECOME 1 last year, the one about Miriam Yeung with breast cancer), the poster made the film look like a generic romantic comedy. But having seen the trailer before few weeks ago, I knew the film would be larger in scope, and definitely more serious. This romantic drama is set in a span of ten years. From 1997 (the handover) to 2007. The story revolves around Miu (Miriam Yeung), who has to work as a fishmonger to pay off her father's debts. Her father's debts aren't the only thing she has to worry about, there's also this pesky rival fishmonger in the market (Eason Chan) whom she bickers constantly with. Of course, predictably, a friendship blossoms between the once-bitter rivals, and possibly leading into something more. But Miu feels that being with another fishmonger (or anyone working in the market) is beneath her, her interest being more in one's financial status and society rank. Will she put all these aside and end up living happily ever after with 'Yu Lo' (literally 'fish man'), who is so obviously the one for her? Sounds like a generic rom-com, eh? Well, you'll be surprised by the results. If it isn't obvious by now, this film is to reflect the ten years Hong Kong society has fared since the handover in 1997. And this film is probably more relevant for Hong Kong audiences than us, and its messages and themes will sail over the head of anyone who doesn't know anything about the changes HK has undergone since the handover. The market Miu works at represents Hong Kong. Although there were claims that it will remain 'unchanged' right after the handover, the changes would be unexpected, inevitable and drastic. The vendors at the market had made a similar pledge, claiming that the market would remain 'unchanged' for fifty years, making them unprepared for what is to come. Throughout the film, Miu will attempt to keep up with globalization, gets involved in get-rich-quick pyramid schemes in preparation for the feared Millennium Bug, attempts to cut of own ties to embrace a new life, going through SARS and a few others. She represents an ever-changing and ever-adapting post-handover HKer. Eason's character, on the contrary, thrives in stability, happy to stick with his job, preferring a stable income, and helping those who needs help, perhaps he represents an older generation of HKers. It's my fascination with this that kept me interested throughout the film, which is very well-acted (especially the two leads) and well-produced. Although I think many will be displeased by the unexpected ending, which, even to me, felt like a slap in the face. And no, this ain't a Korean melodrama, so neither of the characters is suddenly diagnosed with terminal illness. Perhaps at first, the scope of the film reminded me a little bit of the wondrous Hong Kong classic film, COMRADES, ALMOST A LOVE STORY (1996) starring Leon Lai and Maggie Cheung. After all, HOOKED ON YOU is also a love story that takes place in a span of 10 years, with the main characters going through this on-again-off-again agonizing relationship, while drawing from the culture and history of Hong Kong. (COMRADES takes place in 1985 to 1995) But no, this film isn't really as good as COMRADES, more modest, less depth, film is so obviously a political metaphor that it occasionally overwhelms the sometimes affecting love story between Miu and Fish Man. Still a decent movie though. Just that it might have gotten a bit too ambitious, and never reaching the heights I expected it to reach. Would love to hear what others have to say about this if anyone would still bother to go for HK films nowadays. (Interesting. I review this film on the 30th of June, 2007. Posting this review a day later would've coincide with the 10th anniversary of the Hong Kong handover.) |

I just saw the movie yesterday, it is EXCELLENT, and that's considering I had very high expectations for it. It is funny and incredibly touching, I read many reviews and many of the audience use "Tears within Laughter" (<-- haha, a Miriam song too) to describe it.
The acting from the two leads, Miriam and Eason, is amazing. This is Miriam's MOST mature performance to date and coupled with her performances in Drink, Drank, Drunk and 2 Become 1, I think she has shed the "dai siu gu po" image on-screen. Her performance is really one to write about, essentially she is the heart of the movie. The movie follows her life throughout the 10 years (1997-2007) and the audience is easily willing to follow her on the journey. The scene in the trailer/mv where Miriam has tears in her eyes and she plays the casette tape is incredibly sad. I won't spoil why she is crying, but wow, that is a powerful scene especially when the song starts playing, and I started crying in the theatre. I swear the girl behind me was sniffing too. More on Eason, he is really good as well. His gradual change from a sloppy guy into someone who loves Miu is heartbreaking. The Miriam-Eason chemistry, I don't think, needs even to be questioned. Fans of the two all love them together since their debut. And the connection shows in the movie..a poignant and touching relationship throughout the ten years. Another great scene in the movie was when Miriam meets Eason again after 5-6 years, the emotion in Miriam's eyes is good acting. Everyone roots for them, that it makes the movie heartbreaking. The ending is unexpected and from it, you can see the growth in Miriam's character. More about the ending...
It was heartbreaking that Fish Man and Miu did not end up together. The scene where Miriam is holding the wallet that Eason gave her behind her back and Eason wanted to see what it was...and he realized and did not uncover it, spoke volumes. He was a dad already and had a family, he could no longer be with her. But IMO, he still loves her, but their situations have changed. It's sad how Miriam gave up someone so good to her because of her stubborness to not marry a market man. It really gave you a feeling of "Love Too Late." and throws the word Miriam starts the movie with, "miss" into perspective and a deeper meaning!
The supporting cast is terrific too, esp the veterans, Feng Shui Fan (wow, what a performance!) among them...
His death, final words, and Miriam's reaction to it was the saddest moment in the movie. I LOVED the part where Miriam sits by herself in the apartment and plays the casette which has a recording of the themesong "Mui Dong Bien Wan Si" sung by Feng and the young Miriam. I think everyone started crying over that.
Steph added quite a bit of comedy to the scenes. So all in all, the street markets scenes are hilarious esp the cast of characters in it..has good chemistry. I think the film has more meaning for HK audience..so if you have kept up with HK news these 10 years, you will know what they are referring to, like the bakery shop bit, millenium bug..and how the market becomes a metaphor for HK, esp when the chicken man says he hopes the "fu gwai hui does not change for 50 years." Miriam's last words wrap up the 10 years nicely in reference to her own life as well as to the handover. However, HK in these 10 years is used mainly as a backdrop to the love btw Eason and Miriam. Also, some of the scenes in the trailer do not show up in the movie, like the one where Eason says fine, let's get married..is not in the movie. Wow, I wrote a lot..but in essence..one of the BEST of 2007. If Miriam can get a nomination for Drink, Drank, Drunk, she will get nominated for this. Go watch it! this movie is very good.. at first I thought it would just be comedy that i watch and probably totally forget about it cuz it's just meaningless comedy... but this movie is not just a meaningless comedy.. it's a pretty good movie...
The Ending is so sad.. I was so heartbroken to see that Eason and Miriam didn't get together... and how Eason has a family... I was hoping.. maybe there is a twist.. like that was not Eason's daughter.. but that never happened... Another part that is so sad and mad me totally started crying was the part when Miriam's Father died out of the sudden... no sign or anything... it was really touching!
this movie is great with the whole Hong Kong events from the past 10 years... I would say this is a must watch movie.. I would rate this movie 10/10!!! |

THIS MOVIE ROCKS! i love miriam and eason!! they look really cute together, always! (:
i really like this movie. it makes me laugh like mad and really moved and touched me at some parts like when miriam's dad died and miriam was crying. omg that scene was really sad.. but of course there are many funny parts too haha. i like the parts where eason and miriam bickered away non stop (: but the only thing i dont really like is the ending.. i thought they were going to end up together and i was expecting a happy ending. but we could all see that eason still likes miriam 'cos his wife dresses up just like her when they were still working in the market. miriam looked very pretty in this movie and eason of 'cos looked very handsome! xD thumbs up! |

Pre-order your copy now! Language: Mandarin, Cantonese Subtitle: English, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese Rating: IIA 2007 marks the tenth anniversary of the 1997 Hong Kong Handover, when the territory was returned to Mainland Chinese rule. Dubbed a "Handover film" along with Barbara Wong's Wonder Women and Samson Chiu's Mr. Cinema, Law Wing Cheong's Hooked on You gently revisits those momentous ten years through the lives of normal everyday Hong Kongers. With the city as a loving backdrop, this Johnnie To-produced film follows the evolving experiences and relationships of two fishmongers played by Eason Chan and Miriam Yeung, who previously starred in Law's 2 Become 1. The memorable ups and downs of the decade, from the financial crisis and SARS to bakery runs and urban redevelopment, weave unassumingly into the narrative, as the protagonists and the city grow and change together. Collaborating for the third time after Feel 100% II and Frugal Game, Eason Chan and Miriam Yeung share a natural chemistry and deliver remarkably restrained and realistic performances. Banking simply and effectively on good acting, good story, and good direction, Hooked on You subtly captures the Hong Kong experience with earnest emotions, sincere storytelling, and down-to-earth nostalgia. In the summer of 1997, 27-year-old Miu (Miriam Yeung) begins working as a fishmonger at Fortune Market to pay off the debts of her irresponsible father (Stanley Fung). She immediately invites trouble from brusque fishmonger Fishman (Eason Chan), who is none too happy about the competition, but the two eventually settle into a tentative friendship. The hardworking Miu, like most Hong Kong women approaching the Big Three-O, is hoping to get married soon, and most definitely not to a market vendor. As the years pass, Miu and Fishman experience trials big and small together, growing closer over time. Fishman sees Miu and Fortune Market as his present and future, but she wants more from life. |

"Hooked on You" was a great story! I really like how it was based on Hong Kong's 10 years of Reunification!
The storyline really showed the life of the middle class society. It was quite a touching/emotional movie. As the movie progressed, the storyline was getting better and better. Confusions I had in the beginning became understandings and It was quite a good message! The word "Miss" was quite a thought! The movie brought myself a feeling a humor, love, family, career, and most important how you want to live your life. It also taught me that the decisions you make will have it's consequences. Miriam wanted to live a life away from Fortune Market, therefore she didn't marry a fisherman/Eason. At the end, I thought Miriam and Eason were going to be together, but it was quite a mind-blowing and creative ending!!! I'm glad Miriam/Eason were part of Hooked on You because I feel that it really shows how the both of them have matured! |

just finished watching this movie today, and overall its so far the best movie this yr. lol my opinion. now that i watched it, i actually love miriam and eason as a pairing haha. i think some scenes were cut cos i didnt see eason proposing to miriam or mayb i just missed it. easons character was funny, yet adorable. its so cute how he was so caring about miriam and stuff. i also thought miriam and eason were going to end up together. the ending just...i dont liek it lol. but its kinda miriams fault since she didnt want to marry a fishmonger. i just wished eason could of waited for her at least or something.
some scenes were so emotional to me. like how eason was there for miriam wen her dad died and wen she got conned and lost all her money. i think the funny bit was wen eason had to take the blame for miriams congee shop. eason fit the role so well, cos hes so goofy and stuff. how i wished miriam and eason ended. im still not over it lol. xbunnylicious: yea i think hes from drive of life too! only the time wen he was at the cafe shop with his fiancee THEN i realised it was him.
