Jacky Zhu kicked out from 183 Club, Friday June 15, 2007 Taiwan Options

The Canadian-born Jacky Zhu (祝釩剛) has been kicked out of 183 Club for being a playboy. In the West a player isn’t such a bad thing, but here it’s more complicated. The pop audience is generally younger and therefore adult material is not welcome. The nation’s youth, it seems, needs to be protected from the predations of people like Zhu.

Zhu’s “sin” was to go nightclubbing and according to informed sources his preferred playground was Room 18, where he would put it about a bit. Regrettably, the poor luvs who were lured to the pop star’s pad were so upset at being just another notch in the star’s bedpost they wrote to Zhu’s record company, Jungiery, and complained. Jungiery has a stable of wholesome performers like 5566, 7 Flower and K-One. The svengali behind these toothsome grins and pretty haircuts is Sun De-rong (孫德榮, aka Sun Zhong) and he’s famous for managing with an iron hand. If talent steps out of line it’s slapped into shape or pushed out.

The country’s moral guardian has been disenchanted with Zhu for some time and had been fining him for his clubbing and sexual infractions. According to a report last month in the Liberty Times (our sister paper), the final straw was a trip to Hong Kong, with a model. The media caught him at the beach applying sunscreen. Pop Stop is tempted to applaud his caring side, but the Times’ outraged tone captures the moment better.

“He was caught intimately applying oil all over her naked body. Even worse, he spent the night at her house. As the result of these intimate pictures, Sun De-rong was provoked,” the Times wrote, adding Zhu’s opinion was that, “This shouldn’t be a problem. ‘Hollywood artists often do these type of things.’”

Now comes the interesting part of the story. Last weekend a Shanghai news report said Sun had finally announced Zhu’s departure and confirmed the band was going to be “five minus one for the foreseeable future.” Fans on the 183 Web site were incredulous.

“It is hard to find someone like Jacky. I mean, no one is perfect so I would forgive Jacky for what he did. I honestly don’t think it was something really bad or really serious, but sadly [Sun] thinks it was.... sigh … I am just sooooo sad ... I don’t know if I can ever completely get over this ... SOB ... Jacky please come back,” said a tearful “Trinie.”

The spin on the story was this was a cultural misunderstanding. Foreigners (even Canadian-born Chinese) don’t understand the ways of the East and therefore behavior that is acceptable in Hollywood just doesn’t cut it here. This is true. After all, can you imagine Jolin Tsai (蔡依林) going out on the town without her knickers, her privates flapping in the breeze, like Britney Spears? Obviously not.

However, deep throat sources have revealed another possible reason for Zhu’s departure. They say the recent police dragnet of showbiz people has netted one more victim and that is Zhu, who is said to have been tested for drugs and found wanting. Pop Stop spoke to two representatives at Jungiery and while neither denied the accusation, both repeated the management line that Zhu was asked to leave the group because of bad behavior.

WOW... Well as a Canadian raised chinese, honestly, applying sunscreen on someone isn't anything dramatic. And it's not as if other artists' private life were much better. They might just have not been caught. Too bad. Cause he was the only one that could actually sing within the group.

Wait a minute...they kicked our their talent? Jacky was the only one that could sing!!! 183 Club is nothing without him...at least not good enough to be a pop group anymore. Hopefully Ehlo can carry them cuz he the only one left that still has a decent voice.

Well as a CBC, I understand that there is a different moral standard...Though I still feel bad for him to be kicked out of the group just because he is a playboy...I wouldn't say that behavior like Britney Spears or Lindsay Lohan is accepted here though

The leader of 183 Club was Johnny Yan Xing Shu. So it have no interference with the leader position.

Ha, I think it's a blessing in disguise for him. Now he can actually have a singing CAREER, instead of being a puppet to that idiot Sun De Zhong and getting his strings yanked all the time. Sun De Zhong is like a hyped/overdosed version of Albert Yeung/Mani Fok from EEG. At least EEG tries to be more subtle about these things, but they did it to Isabella too.

See, if they treated him as an ARTIST and not an IDOL, they should keep their noses out of his private business.But no, they wanted a poster boy to mold and pull the way they want.

So yeah, now's the time to watch 183 sink deeper than it already is starting to. They got their minutes of fame, now they can step down for the next pretty boys that want to be idols. Hopefully Jacky can learn a lesson from all this and get himself a better manager and career, given his talent. I don't endorse guys being playboys or whatever, but when I'm watching TV or listening to a song, I don't give about their personal lives...I'm not idolizing him, I just enjoy his works as an ARTIST sheesh.

wow, this is not right! the media cannot just generalize that Jacky ZHu's behaviour is common and acceptable for CBCs or in western culture. that is shallow...he is bringing down the image of cbc!! it's true that Hollywood is successful and has talents and is a powerful showbiz, but look at some of the famous stars that we have once (or some of you still may) admired: Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, MKA , paris Hilton just to name a few. Because they display those types of behaviour does NOT mean it's right and acceptable. they are out of control..and look at their lives now...more pathetic than trash, I'm sorry to say.

Britney Spears..when she just came out, she was active and cute. then she played with marriage for 2 hours? pregnancy? divorces? Lindsay Lohan...who openly said she cannot bear to sleep alone...shame on her does she know many children look upon her? and yet she steps in and out of rehab even more freqeunt than us going to the supermarket for groceries!! same with MK&A..they were once the adorable twins..and yet they do drugs, party hard, and drop by the rehab so often. Paris Hilton...screaming and crying for her mother when she got put to jail?

What kind of "role models" are they to the children? to our society? yes, they may have talents, but their behaviours are outweighing their talents by far. they are known for their bad behaviour rather than recognized for their talents nowadays. They are out of control....and just because they do this, does not mean it's common and "right" in our western society.

Eliminating him from 183 is a right choice, he is another prey out to corrupt our already decaying society. we need role models who are worth supporting and admiring for our young generations, as idols are a big factor and influence nowadays. Look at the popular boyband Fahrenheit, they are quite well-known for their good-boy image. Yes, they might not be ilike this off-camera, ..but at least they can control their behaviours and know what is right from wrong. If this Jacky is really the only one who can sing in 183 Club, then they might as well disband now that he's gone.

what wholesome performers?? ? in 5566, Zax Wang has a child out of wedlock & Jason is on diet drugs to keep his weight down. so why werent they kicked out especially Zax Wang with his major sin of pre-marital sex???

wont surprise me if Jacky Zhu will have an excellent solo career once he leaves 183. afterall, Jungiery artistes never manage to make it big intlly.

T__T That is really sad! I agree with the majority here in the forum, Jacky had the best voice of all the 183 Club members. He even had a solo album before the group. I hope that he can take this setback and turn it around to his advantage. He has the talent to move forward, so I hope someone in Taiwan will see that and sign him as a solo artist. If not, he speaks English - maybe he should try his hand here! I'd buy and English Jacky album! 183 Club won't be the same with out him. I think that celebrities are followed to closely in most countries. What they do on their time should be there own business, not the entire worlds. It's obvious he was a player, since he always managed to play those roles in his dramas. Keep going Jacky! You have a big fance base!

First of all, singers/ entertainers weren't view as "role models" once upon a time so it's not like they need to live up to anything. Secondly, it was our generation who put them up all high & stuffs. And thirdly, this article is totally exaggerated! Tell me about it. I mean the point is "he got caught". Seriously, are all the other artists (aka every artist in the Eastern trade) so "good" and "pure" ? I'm not trying to make an excuse for Jacky, but just saying he's the one that got caught so they're all making a big deal out of it and "targeting" him.

Didn't SDR say something like "Don't get caught by newspapers" or whatever. It's like saying, "You can do anything, just don't get caught". It's not like SDR is good or anything or value any standard. He just base on if they "get caught" or not.
