Wow, really? That pix is actually from B&W? I do recognize the veteran male actor (Ivy's dad) being in another scene in B&W with ZZ. He is a HK actor and I love watching him. But have forgotten his name. He also acted in Love Storm together with ZZ.

This means he (the veteran actor) is gonna act as the Triad Head whose daughter (Ivy) will fall in love with Vic's character almost at first sight, or first "fight", hah hah hah!! I just can't wait to see this scene when Ivy and Vic first meet. He is gonna flirt with her, she will throw him to the ground (cuz she knows martial arts) and then somehow, falls madly in love with ZZ!! Gaahhh!! This must be the most unique "falling in love" scene I have ever heard of.

Let me talk with you a bit more about this drama B&W. It was around 2002 or 2003 which is about 5 years ago, even before my daughter was born, that Director Cai started to think about this drama. But at that time, there were many challenges that he was not able to overcome or settle. This included our ability as producers and our depth of experience, all of these has not reach the level to be able to make this drama B&W. If we had insisted on making this drama then, there is a high possibility that we will not be able to achieve the ideas and plans that we have in mind. So at that time, we decided to choose another drama which was Mars, working with ZZ. And there was also another producer that is Ms Angie Cai.

So B&W was put to one side. And in between, we shot The Hospital. This drama (B&W) continued to be put aside. Because too many people kept telling Dir Cai that “this drama is quite impossible. For one thing, we do not have the expertise in this area ie action and gun fight, and where will you find the funds?” Because we can forsee that this drama is one that will incur a lot of money. And so we just kept this drama in our hearts and did not do anything about it.

It was after we finished filming The Hospital, and Dir Cai spent about half-a-year thinking about what he plans to work on next. He wrote a lot of stories/ scripts (sytwo : not sure of exact words) and did a lot of homework. But one day, he came to me and said “I still want to do B&W. No matter how many people try to stop me, telling me that it is impossible, I still want to do it.” And so we said, “Alright let’s do it” and that’s how we started.

The story of this drama is an original one entirely created by him (Dir Cai). The origin of this drama story is pretty interesting. Actually at that point of time, this was an action-police drama that was specially written for F4. We felt that after F4 has gone through a dream-like period, which is after Meteor Garden, what story/ drama can we write for the four of them that will make them look different?

4:22 – 4:36 min
And so ZZ’s characeter, Ruffian, was especially written for ZZ. Of course before that, ZZ has never acted as a ruffian-like character. He is a policeman, but he is a coward and afraid-to-die type of guy.

4:37 – 4:39 min

(laughed) He is the type who when he sees bullets he will escape/ avoid/ run away, and when he sees girls he will flirt. A character that is “tien fu shing”. (sytwo : don’t understand this words)

But at that time, no one would think that ZZ can act such a character. But Dir Cai feels that he can. Dir Cai and ZZ has a certain relationship. He said “You know, ZZ is not a melancholic prince. He is not. Everyone have been deceived by him. He is actually a ruffian. ”

5:12 – 5:19 min
In his (Dir Cai) heart and mind, he (ZZ) has a different facet of personality. And so when he (Dir Cai) wrote out the character of Ruffian, he went deep into each layer and facet of ZZ’s personality. He wants to “bring this out” from ZZ. And felt that the audience will find it meaningful, very meaningful.

(sytwo : Bua ha ha ha! I like how Dir Cai described ZZ. He understands ZZ so well. That’s why ZZ love working with Dir Cai so much. Dir Cai is right, ZZ is really a Ruffian at heart and has multi-layers of personality.)


5:20 – 5:47 min
[clips of ZZ acting as Ruffian, including saying something to Mark (probably something ridiculous), flirting with Janine at the lab and behind-the-scene of him doing a cute dance at the sidewalk. So ke-ai! This must be part of the ZZ BTS film that was lost and then found again. There is also the scene of ZZ being thrown by Ivy and the fighting scenes where we see ZZ all hurt and bloodied. Love ZZ in the intense action scenes, especially holding a gun !! )

5:48 – 6:34 min

When we write the script and storyline, we are slightly from most other producers/ writers. We normally start from a real person…..for example we will think about what story do we write for ZZ, or what story do we write for so-and-so…..we feel that this person is that character, or when we have decided a certain person for a role, we will write according to that particular person. And so in our dramas, the character and the actor is matched and merged together. So the actor will become popular easily and audience will also easily accept and like him. Because he is very close to the character he plays. Or there is no major differences and the two (character and actor) can be merged as one.

(sytwo : Wow! Love how Dir Cai and his wife puts the actor first when they create the characters and write the script. It’s no wonder that for Mars, Dir Cai actually tweaked the role of Ling so that it is close to ZZ’s character – fun, cheeky and mischievous besides being cool, ladies-man and dangerous. Ling is a little different from the original manga Rei who is more cool but not as fun and cheeky.)

6:35 – 6:55min
Now about the process of selecting the actors for the roles, I encountered a lot of problems/ challenges. Because when it was no longer these four people (F4) who will be acting, we had to start looking for other actors. But we have never thought that we must look for actors similar to the four of them. Instead, we want to look for someone that gives us the right feel/ vibes.

6:56 – 7:32 min
I feel that what’s especially unique (in selecting the actors) is Mark. Mark plays the character of Hero. The first time we met him, he was this young guy. He was very shy and stands beside his father. And don’t really dare to put himself upfront. But you can see that this young man, although looks very polite and shy and introverted, but inside of him you can see a very big energy and ability. But it has not come out yet. Dir Cai secretly told me that he (Mark) has a very big chance (of getting the role or being an actor).

7:33 – 8:09 min
We really went through an online selection process because we wanted to open up this opportunity to all. One directive that Dir Cai gave us was to use new people, whether in terms of the actors or the crew. Let those who are interested in this industry join this drama to get experience and development. So we said “OK” and we did it. And so although Mark attracted the director’s attention even from the beginning, in the middle of this he went through a very long, extensive and competitive selection process.

8:10 – 8:30 min
It was really painful during that time. Especially the 12 of them (in the finals), as their relationship with each other was very good but all of them know that “if you win, I will lose.” And Mark, from someone who was introverted and dare not talk a lot, through all the numerous audition and performances, was finally selected by all the judges as the final winner.


8:31 – 9:19 min
His (Mark) righteous character, and his attitude of always wanting to do things well, won him the role of Hero. I feel that there is no question that Mark should be taking up this character. The role of Hero was also changed a lot due to Mark. When he joined us, we amended some of the script and also the feelings and relationships. How he interacts and acts opposite ZZ, how they enter into friendship, how they fight and quarrel. He (Mark) does not like him (ZZ) but in the end they became the best/ unbeatable partners (sytwo : not sure of this words)…..we made changes/ adjustments to all of these areas. So I feel that the creation of this character Hero has gone through a very unique process.

I was very anxious because since we made the selection, it becomes our responsibility. We have to “force” or lead them (new artistes) to the right place. Because although we selected them based on their performance and the on-screen test was OK, there is still a gap (in skills?). And so a few months before and during the shoot, we spent a lot of time to teach them. We always do such things. This is a very big sacrifice on our part and also a big responsibility. Because if we do not make sure that these new artistes do well, our drama will still be the one that will suffer. And the accountability/ burden will still be ours. I do not know if everyone will understand such a feeling. It may seem as if we have to painfully select the two new artistes, but in actual fact we ourselves have made the decision (sytwo : not sure of this last sentence).

I am SOOOOO excited to watch zz in another drama. after wish to see you again, i'm looking forward to a completely new character to watch zz transform into and to bring alive to the audience. this drama feels so fresh and new. i love that it's not based on a manga but is an original storyline by the director and i love how they are trying to incorporate each actor's personality into it. i can't wait to see this. it looks like they are putting so much time and money into this. and when a company is willing to invest that much, it must mean they believe in its potential. and probably in its potential to reach a broader spectrum of viewers. it has such a more mature look and feel to it already... totally not your typical idol drama faire!

i'm really excited to see this mark guy act too, that last scene where his eyes are tearing up...it looked like such a powerful scene. i hope the storyline is going to be really interesting. i didn't really like the hospital that much, but i loved mars so i hope i'll like this one.

i hope the romance pairings have great chemistry. i know zz will do a great job no matter what, but i'm hoping for a really believable pairing that we can fall in love with for a while. beside barbie, zz hasn't been paired with anyone i've thought was AMAZING and believable to me.

can't wait until it comes out! hopefully it will be soon!!!!!

Long time no "see"! Heh heh! I can't wait to watch B&W either. Dir Cai is taking such a long time to shoot this, but after watching the trailer and how Mrs Cai described the dream he has for B&W, I am willing to wait. This is Dir Cai's passion and dream project, and he is pouring his whole heart and soul into it. So I am sure it will be amazing and a breakthrough drama for Taiwan, and maybe even Asian dramas. I certainly hope all the efforts put in by Dir Cai, ZZ, Mark and the rest of the cast and crew will reap its rewards in positive reviews, good ratings and numerous awards.

ZZ's Ruffian role is going to be one that I wait with much anticipation. Esp knowing that it was specially created for him. Pray that ZZ will give another breakthrough performance and rise to another higher level as an actor. He is certainly giving it all he got. And yes, I also hope for great chemistry between him and the female lead, Ivy Chen. ZZ really needs a good compatible partner to bring out the best in him, and also create a on-screen couple that will win the heart of audiences.

Mark is quite a revelation. I have been pretty impressed by him so far in the trailer. Dir Cai has always been good at spotting and discovering new talents. And he spends a lot of time training and coaching them, just like what he did for F4 and also ZZ (esp in Mars). So I have high hopes that Mark's performance will touch and amaze us.

Same for Ivy. Though a newbie, under Dir Cai's hands, she should turn out an excellent portrayal of her character. She is already playing an interesting role - daughter of a triad boss with martial arts expertise. Sounds like a spirited little thing. And she is gonna throw ZZ to the ground in their very first meeting, then promptly fall in love with him! That should make an interesting love story.

Can't wait for B&W to air so we can have some delicious discussion going on here. But still no concrite news on the airdate yet........

After watching the B&W, I have only one word -SPEECHLESS. It's way beyond my expectation. Definitely a breakthrough drama that will create history in Taiwan and Asia. Congrats to Dir Cai and ZZ, Mark and rest of the cast and crew.

ZZ's performance has again achieve another breakthrough. He displayed so many different appearances, emotions and multi-personalities as Ruffian. And Mark, the newcomer, is also very good. He looks very heroic. Same for Ivy, you can see her character coming through strongly. And wow, Kingone!! He looked amazing as the psycho baddie. Congrats to Jie Kai and Janine too for shining in their roles.

And to Director Cai - you've done it!! You've reached for your dreams and you are about to reach the finish line. Jiayou !!

Up until now most taiwanese dramas I've seen were romantic comedies but this trailer looks just great.
Both male leads are pretty handsome, there'll be some romance in the background, amazing special effects - I'm speechless just like sytwo.

Well.. I got attracted to this drama after looking at the trailer!
I was really really really(I said it 3 times) impressed by the drama and how they film it. It definitely took them a lot of effort and time and... It is really impressive! I was shocked at the actor's acting like the pervertic way kingone laughs. It gave me a deejavu feeling....
I saw alot of big shots here! This is sooo gonna be a HIT!
I hope that this drama can air soon! It finished already right?

This is filmed like a movie! And I really think that this drama is perfect, it has everything. I was saying that some dramas claim to be professional and perhaps truly professional with good actors, crew, cast, director and all but it may not be nice. Sometimes, nice dramas aren't professional. But I think this will be a good which will be both nice and professional!

The day before yesterday on Oct 10th, in the Black & White official website (http://www.wretch.cc/blog/prajnaworks/), Director Cai launched a 8-minute trailer for the first time. In the trailer, Zai Zai was fighting in the hail of bullets and seen risking his safety for the performance. This trailer has attracted more than 40,000 viewers in the prajnaworks website. At the beginning before the drama start shooting. Janine Chang and Ivy Chen was fighting for lead actress role, but finally Janine took up the 2nd lead actress position. In the trailer, Janine appeared on screen before Ivy does. As Director Cai and Janine has a relationship of teacher-student, this may be counted as giving face to Janine.

When asked, Producer Yu Xiao Hui (Dir Cai’s wife) said that Janine is the senior and should be given due respect. And that Ivy is a cheerful girl and will not care about such matter. Sequence of appearance starts with ZZ, then Janine, followed by Mark and Ivy.

Janine is now in HK and when asked about this, she said she is touched and appreciates Director Cai and Sis Xiao Hui’s compassion and caring, but feel a little “shy” as Ivy has a lot more scenes compared to her. Before leaving for HK, Janie has already watched the trailer together with the rest of the cast and crew. She felt very moved by the film and said that this drama is very different from “The Hospital”, but Dir Cai always give people a shock whenever he presents his work.

Zai Zai was not nominated in the Golden Bell award this year making many people find the decision "questionable" or "hard to believe". However, Zai Zai's performance in Black&White shows "Freshness" and is an eye-opener. His fighting scenes are intense (打戲激烈 – Da Xi Ji Lie), his dramatic/ gentle scenes are emotional/ passionate (文戲激情 - Wen Xi Ji Qing), and there is rich play (abundantly rich and numerous) in both his voice and facial expressions when he is speaking out his script. In one fragment of the trailer, Zai Zai was held hostage and tried to catch the suspects. In the end, he rushed to the railroad as if the action hero in "Die Hard" making his fans extremely nervous (pulse racing).

There are many veterans in the cast. Their performance only make the drama as the top rated show. Two of the model-like supporting actresses in the drama also gave excellent performances.

But because this drama’s theme deals with gangs/ triads and police force, and besides having gun-fights, it also has many scenes of “guns pointing at head” plus realistic depiction/ visuals of drugs. Although the standard and quality of the film is very high, will the drama pass the general standard (censorship) set by major TV stations? Yu Xiao Hui (producer) “helplessly” said “We will have to wait and see.”

After Zai Zai completes his F4 Japan concert tour, he will join the cast and work another 20 days to finish B&W.

Ivy Chen took over the lead role from a newbie (Grace) who initially won the role through an open competition but did not perform when camera started rolling. Janine was in fact one of the judges in the final competition, together with ZZ.

HEY! I don't know if you guys have seen or not... You probably have, but I'm just so excited I wanted to come here and post it for you all. We at Intangible FS claimed B&W to sub when it comes out next year!!! I've been wanting to sub this drama since I first heard about it! When the trailer came out I posted it on our forum and almost immediately everyone was excited to sub it!

The drama just looks so awesome! The quailty of the film is amazing for a T-drama. And the acting is unfounded in the T-drama world. Vic was AMAZING! When he was breaking down on Mark's shoulder saying she was gone... tears formed in my eyes! During a trailer! I'm so excited! Summer 2009 can't come fast enough!

I'm waiting on pins and needles for any and all info about B&W! Keep the info coming guys!!!

This is really making me excited, especially from the preview. It's good to see ZZ showing a different side of him, instead of the old icy-prince image.
The trailer is so intense, it's shot like an action movie. Kingone's psycho image gave me chills, with those "dreamer" drugs. I think Ivy is pretty cute-looking. She got that adorable vibe.
I was actually pretty surprised that there's a trailer for this drama and it's 8min long!!!

Yeah, those posters were very well done. They all have a very dark feel to them.

That's what I'm already loving about this drama. Everything's so dark! All the characters have something wrong with them, none of them perfect. It's going to edgy, action packed, and the directing is going to make this drama a hit.

I dnt usually like watching cop style series....but this one just really looks good..... i havent seen the other male lead act before so it's probably part of the interest but Vic just acts so well in it. the previews are really interesting to.

That Ivy girl (didn't know who she was before this drama) is so INTENSLY beautiful!!! She looks AWESOME holding that gun!

I, too, was worried about it being a "cop drama" but I think this one will be intense enough to hold my attention. I mean the trailer alone took my breath away, so I can't even imagine what the drama in its entirity is going to do to me. If I suddenly stop coming to AF when this drama starts airing, you guys can assume that I've died due to lack of oxygen.

Actually i'm not worried about it being a cop drama - korean Time of dog and wolf was really breathtaking
I think that this drama can turn out to be pretty good.
The preview itself was simply amazing.

And this time some actors got to play different roles - like Kingone, he's going to play some mad man - up until now he was mosly known from roles of good boys like in Devil beside you.
And the guy who recently played Anson in FTLY - it seems that this time he'll get more serious role.
So i'm really anticipating this drama.

It's really encouraging to read media praising ZZ’s acting cuz TW media hardly ever do that (same for other idol actors/ actreses). But from the trailer, it already shows deep character development which is the type of dramas that I love. And ZZ's acting there took my breath away. The other actors were very good too incl Ivy Chen, Mark (acting as Hero), Kingone and all the veterans like Paul Chun who plays Ivy's dad, the triad boss. Yes, Ivy is very beautiful and she acts well. Glad that ZZ is finally acting opposite a good/ intense actress after all the newbies in his previous dramas.

We meet again, in another ZZ drama. B&W is really a breakthrough production for Taiwan. Really hope that Dir Cai's dreams will be fully realized and B&W will break all records. Same like you, I am not a fan of police dramas. But the trailer totally took me off-guard. Never expected it to be so intense. And the emotional parts in the 2nd part of the trailer made me tear up....esp when ZZ was sobbing into Mark. Like your comment about ZZ like fine wine - good analogy !

I completely agree! Those kiss/sex scenes are so freakin' intense! I can't wait to watch them~ Lord knows it's been too long since I've seen a good T-drama sex scene! What was the last? TKA and FtLY? This one looks a lot more rough and passionate so that's going to make it so much better!

I know!!! I'm EXTREMELY excited about Kingone's character in this drama! He looks so freakin fantastic! Another Vic and Kingone have worked in a lot of dramas as well (Mars, Wish to See You Again, and Black & White). I'm really excited about the collab! And nothing can please me more than seeing Anson in a real role. His character in FtLY completely annoyed me, I'm glad he's going to do something serious.

I don't think it will be originally broadcasted with English subs, but when it starts being marketed overseas it will probably come with English subs. It will probably be easy to buy the DVD with subs, but I hope they make them more legible than in the trailer. I could barely read them.

However, so you don't have to wait as long for subs, we at Intangible FS have claimed this drama and will be subbing it as it's released!!!

I know! IT's SO exciting to be around now with the start of this change that will start happening in T-dramas after this drama. This drama is really raising the bar for production value in T-dramas and I'm excited to see other dramas try to match it. It's a T-drama revolution! I think Extravagant Challenge, with its huge budget will try to measure up to the scope and quality of this drama. I really hope it does!

I also agree that the fact that they were willing to put so much money and effort into this drama really means that it's a quality project and we most likely won't be disappointed with the finished product! Like I said, I think this drama is going to be revolutionary and will set new standards in the T-drama world! I can't wait!

I'm really excited more people are recognizing Vic's talent. I thought that Vic was already known as one of the best T-drama actors. He's not? Well, I knew after watching Mars that Vic was a quality actor and one to keep an eye on. He's already impressed me several times with his talent in acting, and to know the random chance that it was for him to become Lei in MG and become who he is today, really scares me. If he didn't go with his friend to that audition we might not have the best actor in Taiwan today. It's a scary fact. Fate is so crazy. How thankful I am for it.

You can tell just by the trailer how much Vic has grown as an actor. He is so believable and I literally had tears in my eyes when he breaks down saying she's gone. I mean, a trailer moved me to that extent! Vic is an amazing actor, and if people are just now figuring that out, they're blind, but at least it's better late than never.

Jerry Yan's Starlit to Broadcast Before Ruffian Hero to "Save" Zai Zai

Jerry Yan and Zai Zai, who are idol brothers, are for the first time going to be in the same channel together. It was reported that Zai Zai's Ruffian Hero (Black & White) was planned to be broadcasted during the Chinese New Year on PTS (Public Television Service), but as the project is unable to finish on time, so Jerry Yan's Starlit will be broadcasted at that time instead to "save the fire". Then Zai Za's drama will be broadcasted after Starlit. At the same time, it is reported that their names will be submitted for next year's Golden Bell Award Best Actor award.

It has been reported that there has been a a high degree of overseas copyright inquiry for both "Starlit" and "Ruffian Hero". The copyright sales of both dramas have reached about 1 million (about US$30,000) per episode. For now, Starlit will be broadcasted on CCTV in Mainland China, and the initial broadcast copyright in Taiwan was obtained by PTS. It is planned to start the initial broadcast by late January. PTS has decided to apply the nomination of Golden Bell's Best Actor Award for Jerry Yan Cheng Xu. After realizing PTS' plan, although he has never been nominated for Golden Bell Award, Yan Cheng Xu answered in low profile, "I try hard when filming every drama. I don't think about that (award) too much."

I think Vic is still “battling” with the idol baggage. Many audience, esp Taiwan, only remember him as the super idol with the shuai looks but wooden acting from MG. And since many of his dramas lately are not the type that suits TW’s general taste, ZZ’s acting talent is mostly ignored. I hope B&W will bring ZZ’s amazing talent into TW viewers attention and change their mind about him. Just the 8 min trailer alone has astounded me with Vic’s acting. And yes, I was also in tears in that breakdown scene !

I am not very familiar with Ivy Chen’s works, but I think she is quite new. But from the trailer, I can see that her acting is already pretty well developed and her screen presence is great. Vic acts with such deep emotions and he really needs a good acting partner who can compliment him. I believe that Ivy is able to do that. And Mark has also surprised me with his heartfelt performance from what I have seen so far. And of course, there is the amazing Kingone. Plus Janine, Jie Kai and all the veteran actors/ actresses. This drama is gonna blow our minds away, I can feel it in my bones !

I also agree, Vic is one fantastic actor. And he has come a long from his amateur debut in MG to deliver such a strong performance in B&W (at least from what we can see in the trailer LOL!).

Kingone also really stood out for me. His performance was nothing short of amazing. I am rooting for him to get a Best Supporting Actor nomination.
