Sad Love Song is the new TV drama that will feature Kim Hee Sun (Propose/Forever Love) as a blind singer and Kwon Sang Woo (Stairway to Heaven) as her first love. Song Seung Hun (Summer Scent/Autumn Story) was also supposed to co-star in this drama as another love of Kim Hee Sun's character, but he may be dropping out due to his draft-dodging scandal. Read more about this drama, which was filmed in part in the U.S., in a 10/21/04 Dong-a Ilbo article at: english.donga.com/srv/service.php3?biid=2004102215068 .

Article Kim Hee-sun, A Blind Singer in the New Drama “Sad Love Song”

OCTOBER 21, 2004 23:30
by Jung-Bo Suh (suhchoi@donga.com)

I am very worried about my role since I have to play a singer as well as a blind person, something I’ve never experienced.”

Actress Kim Hee-sun (picture) was cast as the blind “Hye-in,” who sings at a nightclub in a U.S. military campsite, in the soap opera “Sad Love Song.”

Around 500 people, including local and international reporters, drama production staff, and fans, gathered together at the drama’s press conference and her music video preview, which were held at Megabox, Gangnam, Seoul on October 20.

Kim, who wore an elegant black dress pants, continually beamed and repeatedly said, “I am very honored and lucky to have this role.”

Hye-in first falls in love with Jun-yeong (by actor Kwon Sang-woo), who is also from the campsite, but departs from him as she and her mother leave for the U.S. Afterwards, she falls in love with Geun-woo in the U.S. Jun-yeong and Geun-woo are best friends. They are so close that either one would sacrifice his life for the other. One of the core components of dramas that hit the cord of the audiences, a triangle relationship, is well structured.

Kim Jonghak Production and two other joint productions will finish producing “Sad Love Song” with an approximate seven-billion won budget, and then will sell the exclusive right of ground airing to a ground broadcasting company. This means that nobody knows yet which broadcasting company will air it and when it will be shown.

“I have acted many times in the triangle relationship, so I don’t worry about that. Also, I practiced playing a blind person by watching movies with blind people in them.”

However, her biggest hurdle is her singing ability.

“I am pretty bad at singing. However, my role is a singer, and the two male figures are all musicians. Singing is the messenger that delivers love to each other in this drama. So, I am practicing with a singer to improve my singing ability so that it will be good enough for me to sing the theme song ‘If You Love.’”

Kim Hee-sun is filming the Chinese movie “SO4” with Jackie Chan. “I have two more months until I finish the movie, and then I will concentrate exclusively on ‘Sad Love Song,’” said Kim.

About Kwon Sang-woo, her partner in the drama, “I met him for the first time in this drama, and he has a good sense of humor and makes the filming location uplifting,” said Kim. Listening to Kim’s comment, Kwon Sang-woo rebounded making a joke, “Hee-sun is very gorgeous, but her face is really small.”

Producer Yoo Cheon-ryong, who produced the drama “All In,” said, “I met her for the first time during the casting process, and I voted for her as I was drawn to her personality and appearance.”

Actor Song Seong-heon was supposed to be “Geon-woo,” but he couldn’t participate in the press conference since he is entangled with the draft-dodging scandal. According to Kim Jonghak production, they are looking for a new figure that could replace Song.

“Seung-heon and I have been friends since junior high school, and we acted together in the movie ‘Calla.’ I thought we could be good partners in this drama, but he dropped out of the team, which is sad,” said Kim Hee-sun.

Yeah, another sappy tragic love story that Korean producers love to churn out. Saw the MV that was filmed in Australia by KSW, SSH & KHS. KSW and SSH looked really good together......maybe cos' they are best friends in real life. Was really looking forward to seeing them together but now that hope has been dashed with SSH already drafted into the army.

Well, we will just have to see whether KSW can produce another hit drama with Sad Love Story akin to his fantastic performance in STH.

This drama sounds really good. I just hope that they would play it here in Hawaii.
Hopefully its not going to be a sad drama just because of the title.
Kwon Sang Woo is really cute and his acting has improved a lot sot hopefully this would be a good drama.

I've seen the start of this one. It's okay but yeah I get why the title is Sad Sonata. Everything that happened to them is sad. Since they were small. Really. Who was the guy that replaced SSH in this show?

Audience Cries A River With SangWoo
February 28, 2005
Rbbtoday
Translated by prettywu of kwonsangwoo.sg

Every episode of Sad Sonata is worth watching. The audience are not looking forward to what's gonna happen but they are looking forward to another scene where JunYoung, portrayed by Kwon SangWoo has to burst into tears. Every tear that falls from his expressive eyes hurt his fans.

"We know that we are just watching a fiction story, but seeing it played by our sangwoo breaks our hearts, he has given us so much hurt with his cries, we shall commend him for a spectacular crying scene. How can he cry in a single eye, so pure like crystals, it's like he's killing us with so much pain"

Fans supporting Sad Sonata wrote to the official webpage and to istar for Kwon SangWoo sending him their undying support, appreciation and admiration for his tremendous performance in his to-date series.

Sad Sonata has earned a higher rating during its 13 and 14th episode and MBC is craving for more. In the upcoming episodes, expect an even higher rating than anybody can expect. Acknowledgement goes to SangWoo.

Recalling the many faces of Kwon SangWoo in his past films like a high schooler in My Tutor Friend, an Arm Navy in Into the Sun, rich businessman with sacrifices & sufferings in Stairways to Heaven, A priest in Love So Divine, a poor genius composer in the recent MBC release. He has portrayed different roles in the past, and this line of works has proven him as a versatile actor. Even anti-fans have switched and commended his acting skills.

SangWoo's performance earned respect from the fans bringing a much deeper definition to a real drama.

Kwon SangWoo's tears worth to watch
popcorn42, February 27, 2005
Translated by prettywu of kwonsangwoo.sg

How do an ordinary person rate an actor or actresses performance? Is it based on how he/she cries or how he/she performs? In the recent article about a popular Korean Actor, Kwon SangWoo, famous for his trademark as "Prince of tears", his current series MBC's Sad Sonata attracted Asian Audience. This, so far is the most melo-dramatic series that SangWoo has ever done. Although comparing to 2003's Stairways of Heaven where Kwon SangWoo shed a lot of tears because of a dying loved one, this time, in Sad Sonata, he again shed a lot of tears because of leaving a loved one. Both series have their own eye-problem that made it more heart-popping. In Stairways, JungSuh played by Choi Ji Woo became blind in the later part of the series while Hae during the first part of Sad Sonata.

Professional actor Kwon SangWoo has showed his best in everything he does. What else can he show off on his upcoming series and movies? How many more tears does his eyes have to pour? How many more people will get hurt when he cries and speaks? How many more drama films will he do?

After a tear-jerking Sad Sonata, Sangwoo is scheduled to do an action film via Wild Beast this year (2005).

Because of excellent performance of Kwon SangWoo in every film he does, he became the top Korean actor for the month of January-February 2005 in the recent voting.

Hopefully, Kwon SangWoo earns a recognition on his excellent performance in Sad Sonata. He might be one of the best DRAMA actors in Korea.

He doesn't only have a charm, but also has the talent in acting, in every role he portrays, he gives the audience a different feeling everytime. There is always so much excitement to look forward to with Kwon SangWoo.

He is a good actor. Most effective in getting the audience to emphatize with him. And the tears he shed, make you want to comfort him.

It's a good show, but it just depresses me for some reason. It could be that KSW character is just so sad in it. It seems from the start sad things have been happening to him. I wish they would make some scenes happy for him. BUt the title is apt for this one. It really is . It should have been a very very sad story. That would be more correct. But am still watching it, all for the love of KSW.

Why is it that Hae In can't put together the fact that KSW is her bf by his voice and his name? Do a lot of koreans have the same name?

Okay, I just realized that KSW has 2 names in this show. Where did the 2nd one come from? Did his friends give it to him?

Also, who is the guy that's in their group of friends that trained KSW to play the guitar (not MC Mong).

Thanks!

i finished this drama long ago. I still actually have all the epi on my comp. Man, so sad. This was really good. Kwon Sang Woo is just an amazing actor. He makes me cry but his acting. man, what words to describe how wonderful he is. But so much tear and sadness are sometimes over emotional...lol, Kim hee sun was ok, her acting is not that impressive, but she looks pretty. The other guy is not bad, but i think he is the most realistic character in the drama. Overall, i love the drama. It's worth watching. The ending is sad, but beautiful. Kwon Sang Woo has just become my fav now.

I have a question , on Ep.11 the song that Gunwoo asked KSW char to add to the album. When he played it for everybody for the first time. Was that his real voice or was that SSH voice. Isn't it he recorded a song for the series already even before he had to quit the series. It is such a beautiful song and the voice was just so good. So who sang it?

It was sad the Kwon Sang Woo had to die at the end. The last episode was really good. Sad but good. This is a really good series, I would recommend it. Since the title is Sad Love Story you know it had to be a sad ending.

heh it came obvious that he had to die since supposedly he had to "pay" for what he did to his friend, and also that he was the type of friend who had to carry the burden, if he was the true friend. KSW did just that so he had to die. It went with the story as they alluded to it in ep. 19 , but all wasn't lost since KHS has KSW's son in the end. clapping.gif

I guess they have to kill him off to fit the title well because it wouldn't be sad anymore even if the title"sad love story" indicated it.........Maybe they should kill her..I mean comon' he did so much for her already.....

...why am I so mean?....maybe because' I like KSW than her..hehheheh

sorry but i have to give thumbs down on this series, there was just a little too much flaws that just turns me off sometimes in the show, such for some examples; why don't they use telephones yes it may be a little expensive but gosh, they didn't even tried to call each other to confirm themselves and stuck to stupid tape recorders....again it's just ridulously pissing at some points of this show. down.gif

I really liked this drama in the beginning, but afterwards, many factors ticked me off and I thought the drama just kept dragging on and on and on and on....(you get the point). However, i have to admit all the songs were really good. i loved the lyrics. Anyways, i don't know...it was okay, but not the BEST. I had higher expectations for it and I guess it couldn't reach those expectations.

shock.gif i just started watching this series last night! i was crying like crazy after the second episode so i had to stop!! i just had this feeling that this series would be another sad korean drama (duh. the title says it all!) and a major character would be killed by the producers again in the end.. oh why did i read this thread?! now i know who that unfortunate character would be... now everytime i watch (i promise to finish this series although it gives me so much pain whenever KSW is hurt) i would be thinking that KSW's character would die in the end, which i'm sure would turn on the waterworks even more!! weeping.gif

You really get attached to this series and the 2 main characters. Through out the whole series, Junyoung is always calling Hyein's name. It's Hyein this and Hyein that. Before you know it, you're inlove with the main characters and rooting for them. You can feel their love, their despiration, their need for each other. As your head is still full of Junyoung and Hyein....

All the sudden, you download an episode of Stairway to Heaven and the same actor is crying and screaming out JUNG-SUH'S. Uhhh...does anyone see what's wrong with this picture? All the sudden you're like....you two timing, double crossing...etc. Or is it just me? Am I just weird?

wow! ksw looks so hot in those pictures! and the main female character looks really nice with ksw as her co-star! Can someone please pose a summary what the series is about? many are saying it's really good while some are saying it's like stairway to heave. I hope that's not true because stairway to heaven was just so dull, dragging, and pointless. Is sad sonata gonna be like that too? long, sad, and dragging? I just cant stand dragging series and i have found all korean series either that or pointless. I'm watching let's go to school sang-doo and find it really refreshing i'm so amazed at that series. oops i'm rambling again lol. Can anyone please post a summary of the series please?

I just finished this series yesterday... blush.gif I chased it for 3 days and finished it laugh.gif I liked this series but it does seem a little exagerated and unrealistic... But it's worth watching because of KSW infatuated.gif he's such a brilliant actor... it was a litttle slow to start off but after the 8th chapter I was hooked wavecry.gif Oh and it got really annoying when she kept going back and forth and leaving KSW that was sort of dumb... anyways, I would still recommend this series clapping.gif
