Iris to be produced as a manhwa
August 21st, 2009 source KBS’s “blockbuster action spy drama” IRIS [아이리스] is scheduled to premiere in October, but even before it unveils itself to the public, it has confirmed that it is producing another iteration: a manhwa by well-known manhwa-ka Lee Hyun-sae. The decision to publish the new manhwa comes after negotiations between the drama’s production company, Taewon Entertainment, and writer Lee’s agency, Creek & River. The manhwa version will be set in the same world as the television series, but will follow different plotlines unique to the manhwa. The details of publication are still being worked out. As we’ve seen, there have been lots of manhwas adapted for the screen, but this is a new instance of the reverse in action. There is heightened curiosity as to the outcome, as it has the potential to spawn a new business model. Lee Hyun-sae is the manhwa-ka who created, among other titles, Strike Love (which was turned into an MBC drama this year) and golf-themed Buddy (set for a drama adaptation later this year). Iris (the drama version) has been heavily hyped for a while, even before it cast such names as Lee Byung-heon, Kim Tae-hee, Jung Jun-ho, Kim So-yeon, and TOP. I wonder whether the drama will be able to live up to its buzz. There’s an awfully high level of expectation for it, and it would be pretty sad if it flopped after all the work, money, and hype poured into the production. True, that’s the case for any drama, but Iris comes with a particularly hefty production budget and some heavy hitters attached. (Lee Byung-heon on TV again!) |

'Iris' T.O.P "I will show my potential as an actor"
![]() The Big Bang member who transformed as an actor turned singer, Choi SeungHyun(T.O.P) is ready for his first acting challenge. Choi Seung Hyun attended the show case for 'Iris' on the 31st at 8PM, located in Seoul Plaza KBS 2. He stated,"Frequently being appeared is not neccassary, and that isn't what we should focus on." and 'I will learn slowly." He said, "I haven't gone to the army yet, and in this drama, I got to hold a gun for the first time." and "Truthfully, I haven't adjusted yet, and I'm trying my best to." "The Big bang members tell me it's an amazing drama and for me to do well. They cheer me on and worry about me. I thank the members. Singing and acting is both a very hard thing to do. Particulary, acting is harder because I haven't had any experience with it, but I am slowly trying to learn." He plays the role who has to eliminate the existence of the cold-blooded murderer. On October 15, 'Iris' is scheduled to air. The breath-taking action, betrayal, romance, is most likely the first Korean blockbuster action drama. On the other hand, the main actors Lee Byung-hun, Kim Tae Hee, Kim Seung Woo, Kim So Yeon, Jeong Junho, Kim YoungChul and Choi Seung-hyun (T.O.P) attended the 3rd in Chungmuro International Film Festival's special event, the show case. An huge amount of people( 400 member audience) came to see the stars. The Kyodo news agency reported the Korean Wave, and dozens of news reporters attended. A KBS announcer was on the set of 'Iris' for 15 minutes saw the highlight of the film screenings and the main actors on stage. A Look At IRIS's Supporting Cast
September 22nd, 2009 // by javabeans Looks like each of the characters in the main cast of spy drama IRIS [아이리스] is getting his/her moment in the spotlight. With a name like Lee Byung-heon in the cast, it’s no surprise he gets most of the attention, as does his CF queen leading lady Kim Tae-hee, but this is one solid supporting cast. First up: Kim So-yeon (Gourmet). Kim cut off her long hair to play Kim Sun-hwa, a North Korean spy who shows off lots of fierce action skills. Sun-hwa is “like a shadow” to her superior officer, North Korea’s top spy, played by Kim Seung-woo. An intense person who believes that failure is always soon followed by death, Sun-hwa becomes conflicted when she becomes indebted to the enemy: In the process of pursuing top South Korean spy Kim Hyun-joon (Lee Byung-heon), she finds her loyalty swayed to him after Hyun-joon saves her life. Through the course of filming the numerous action scenes, Kim So-yeon has already incurred several injuries including tearing a ligament in her leg and needing 12 stitches for a slash to her leg. Next, Kim Seung-woo (How to Meet a Perfect Neighbor, Woman on the Beach). As Park Chul-young, North Korea’s top spy, Kim showcases a different side to his character from the softer, gentler image he’s shown in previous works. Fiercely dedicated to his work, he is capable of dying for his beliefs, and once he fixes on a target, he never gives up. On the other side, we have Jung Jun-ho (Last Scandal of My Life), who plays Jin Sa-woo. Like most of the cast, Jung also takes on a departure from his previous softer image as he takes on the role of an elite spy as part of South Korea’s NSS (its security agency). Sang-woo falls for Seung-hee (Kim Tae-hee’s profiler character) at first sight. However, because of his deep friendship with his agent colleague Hyun-joon (Lee Byung-heon), who also has a romantic development with her, Sang-woo keeps his feelings for Seung-hee hidden. Even as the role of Sa-woo involves car chases, explosions, foot chases, and many other action sequences, Jung Jun-ho is said to be the witty and humorous mood-maker on set, who keeps his co-stars and the staff laughing behind the scenes. Last but not least, we have Big Bang idol star TOP (aka Choi Seung-hyun) making his return to television after his role in the 2007 drama I Am Sam. TOP plays a cold-blooded killer with a 100% kill rate who has been ordered to kill Lee Byung-heon. As a lesser character, TOP has fewer scenes to shoot, but is said to come onto the filming set on days he doesn’t film to keep monitoring the acting of his sunbaes. (Probably a smart move for a fledgling actor making the leap from idol singer status.) IRIS is scheduled to premiere on KBS on October 14. http://www.dramabeans.com/2009/09/a-look-a...-cast/#comments This post has been edited by _juniper: Sep 23 2009 10 40 AM |

Probably, this drama will be worth watching because of the AMAZING cast and powerful story. I dunno but I hope it lives up to the name because with such grand stars as lead, it'd be sad if ratings were to be low... Can't wait to see Kim Tae Hee and Lee Byung Hun!

![]() Will blockbuster drama "Iris" get to pop the champagne? Source "Someone said we should pop the champagne here. But we'll pop it once the series really becomes a hit," a member on the production crew of TV series "Iris" said of his confidence in the drama at a press conference held Monday at the Lotte Hotel in Seoul. As such, it would be strange if broadcasters did not take an interest in this drama starring A-listed actors including Lee Byung-hun, Kim Tae-hee and Jung Jun-ho, was in production for a year and has been promoting itself as a 'major blockbuster action drama'. A mass of media companies gathered to the press conference where the directors and stars of the upcoming KBS drama had to answer to a flood of questions for an hour. The reason "Iris" needed to have and could even bring together such a cast was because of the scale of story which includes a confrontation between North and South Korea's intelligence agencies and the conspiracy surrounding the United States' military industrial complex. Edited versions of the first two episodes of the drama revealed at the press conference did enough to emphasize this point. Actors were constantly seen engaging in the action scenes which Lee called "close-to-life, like in the Jason Bourne series." Lee dangled in the sky on a single rope and Kim herself acted out a fighting scene in the subway. The drama was on a larger scale and contained more complex action scenes compared to previous films based on similar topics such as "Shiri". "Iris" also took the taste of its 21st century viewers into consideration, using satellite and closed circuit television technology to display various types of pursuit scenes rather than simply blowing up more explosives or having gunfights. Lee and Jung's acting was as stable as expected as their ad-libs tossed here and there into the script loosened up the mood at appropriate times. Hence, it may be from the confidence in these factors that directors Kim Kyoo-tae and Yang Yun-ho emphasized in having to take a "drama-like approach" rather than worrying over the scale or perfection of the drama. Their concern was that the audience may become puzzled with the various characters involved in the story based on the two Koreas and the military-industrial complex of the U.S. "We can't pinpoint to a main enemy because the story is on such a large scale," Yang said of his worries regarding the drama, adding that they tried to make the first three episodes easier and more comfortable for the audience to understand. That is why "Iris" still has a few more episodes to shoot although it went into production well ahead of time. This is where you can see the producer's concern in having to create a so-called 'blockbuster' with topics unrelated to recent trends. In times where the drama market continues to shrink due to the economic downturn and viewership rates are on the fall, will "Iris" really get to pop the champagne? Lee Byung-hun: as Kim Hyun-joon, at the center of the melodrama and action "I had a double but they said they needed my face too so we ended up shooting the same scene twice." This statement showed how hard of a time Lee had shooting the action scenes in "Iris". Like fellow actor Jung had jokingly said, "I didn't have to go through as much trouble as Lee because my character was a rational guy," Lee played the character with the most action scenes. And it is because while in the big picture, "Iris" is about the security situation surrounding the Korean Peninsula, the story is also about "how national intelligence agent Kim Hyun-joon changes drastically in extreme situations". Lee has to act out a wide range of emotions -- from the slightly humorous character in the beginning of the drama alongside Kim and Jung to the agent feeling extreme anger. That is why he says he "focused on acting like how a real spy would" rather than trying display how attractive he can be at both ends of his emotions. Jung Jun-ho: as Jin Sa-woo, the character with a complex to always be the best "You have to wear a bulletproof vest to attend a press conference with this guy because he makes up so many of the things he says," Lee said jokingly while refuting comments Jung made about him. But this statement in itself showed the role Jung played on set of "Iris". He, along with actor Kim Seung-woo, were the ones who set the mood while shooting and helped co-stars Kim Tae-hee, Kim So-yeon and TOP to adjust to their own and opposite roles. The character Jin Sa-woo he plays in the drama is also a catalyst amongst the other roles. He is best friends with Kim Hyun-joon in the beginning of the story but feels a secret rivalry to him deep down inside, and then is becomes conflicted as he starts to love Choi Seung-hee, played by Kim Tae-hee. That is how much of an unpredictable character Jin is. Jung, who is known to have ad-libbed all the comical scenes in the beginning, said "I was worried that Jin may seem too much of a serious guy since the story is about intelligence agency officials so I tried to add a bit of myself into the character." Kim Tae-hee: as spy Choi Seung-hee, who can do everything from action to profiling Kim Tae-hee shows more various sides to her than we have seen before while playing Choi Seung-hee in "Iris". She tried so hard that she "lost a good amount of hair" shooting several takes of a scene where she gets her hair yanked by a terrorist and also had to act like a female whom nobody can quite figure out until her identity as an intelligence official is revealed. Kim said she herself tried to create the various sides her character has -- showing the more loving and ladylike sides to her in the beginning of the drama for the melodrama scenes but showing more spy-like sides to her after the tenth episode. She said she also learned Japanese while on location in Japan in an effort to imitate the nuance of the language as best she could. She was also teased by her fellow actors as eating a lot, which she did to keep up her physical strength to shoot the various scenes, but it has served as the grounds to which she will probably be able to display more various acting skills. Kim Seung-woo: as Park Cheol-young, "the North Korean spy with better style than the South Korean spy" Kim Seung-woo, who plays North Korea's top spy, said he contemplated over whether to speak Korean in the dialect used in North Korea's main city of Pyongyang or in the standard South Korean dialect. He said he decided to use the South Korean dialect after seeing a boxer from North Korea use the Southern dialect well. That is how much thinking he put into his acting. Kim said his character Park has "an unflinching mind for his country and accurate judgement" -- qualities to make the perfect spy. Kim also expressed his affection for "Iris" saying, "Taking on a production as big as 'Iris' may be an opportunity which may never come again." Kim had big hopes for the new series. "We've finished shooting over half of it and I am pretty sure that it will be good. I'm extremely satisfied. I hope that through this drama, fans overseas will be able to feel the uniqueness of Korean dramas, the energy of the actors and the skilled technology of the producers." Kim So-yeon: as Kim Sun-hwa, the North Korean female spy Kim plays a female killer in a North Korean intelligence agency. And it is why she had to get 12 stitches after suffering an injury while shooting an action scene in the drama. She said she in particular had a hard time carrying around the sniper gun which was "heavier than I thought and too long to carry in one hand". So she studied actress Kim Yun-jin's acting from hit film "Shiri" to analyze her own character. Kim So-yeon said she is worried a lot about the melodrama acting she will have to do opposite Lee into the second half of the drama. However, she says she is happy to be "taking on a role in the best production ever". TOP (Choi Seung-hyun): as Vick, the killer who speaks with his gun Big bang member TOP, whose real name is Choi Seung-hyun, plays the role of a killer hired by U.S. military-industrial complex "Iris". His character is a sniper who maintains composure rather than physcially engaging in the fights. That is why TOP focused on his gun acting over anything else, going to shooting ranges to practice shooting live bullets. He said he also watched his favorite classic movies including "A Clockwork Orange" to analyze the acting of various characters. TOP had previous acting experience KBS TV series "I am Sam" but "Iris" is on a different scale from it. "I wasn't interested before but I now feel responsibility and want to do well." |

I'm totally loving this drama right now and it's a pain waiting for the next episodes to be released. Omgosh, I didn't have any expectations for this series and wow, it got me so surprised. It's a bit early to say, but honestly, I love what's been aired thus far. Not only is there romance (Lee Byung Hun and Kim Tae Hee. Damn, that's like two hot people together and sprinkled with a hot kiss haha), action, humor, friendship and suspense. I love the casts in IRIS too. The storyline is not too slow either. The first episode was soo intense with all the fun-filled action and gosh, Lee Byung Hun is soo hot. ^^ I'm watching this for Kim Tae Hee and I'm glad I didn't pass up the chance, haha. I like the chemistry between TaeHee and ByungHun too! I hope they end up together *crosses my fingers*.
TOP has only appeared for a little bit at the end of episode two but I'm awaiting to see what kind of character he plays. Although, I must say I'm not fond of his haircut. I can't wait to see the next episode where SeungHee and HyunJoon goes on their trip together, puhahaha lots more TaeHee+Byunghun moments to adore! It's been the second episode and there's a long way to go so I hope the drama will get even better as we progresses. I haven't anticipated/excited for a Korean drama in the longest time. Can't wait to watch the next episode! Must I add, Kim Tae Hee is such an adorable/gorgeous woman. ^^ By the way, this is an MV for IRIS. It may contain some spoilers about SeungHee and HyunJoon. "Iris" sets eyes on breaking 30% rating
2009.10.22 KBS TV series "Iris" is only three episodes into showing but surveys indicate the spy drama may soon breach the 30 percent mark. According to TNS Media Korea on Thursday, "Iris" topped its TV chart with a viewership rating of 27.9 percent the previous night, gaining 2.6 percent from its previous episode. The first episode, aired on October 14, saw ratings of 24.5 percent. AGB Nielsen Media Research also said the Wednesday and Thursday night drama gained last night, reporting a 25.9 percent rating compared to a 23 percent rating last week. "Iris" took first place on AGB's daily TV chart also. Several of South Korea's top actors including Lee Byung-hun, Kim Tae-hee and Jung Jun-ho star in the drama which was in production for over a year in several countries including Korea, Japan and Hungary. http://www.asiae.co.kr/news/view.htm?sec=e...102218291293739 *LOL. I'm only watching TOP's part in this drama but still, congrats to the whole cast & crew!! Tabi's doing a good job as an assassin. LOL. He's gaining non-kpop fans too coz of his effective acting. xD |

just watched ep. 3 and 4!
so much TOP in ep. 3 and he is sooo burnin hott everytime he appears onscreen i liked the lovey dovey scenes of LBH and KTH in Japan.....the scene with the candy, it was very romantic and in a way it was not so sanitary, especially wen LBH and KTH are not real lovers....i wonder wat they were thinkin wen they did tat scene...heheh.....some of LBH's expressions are so cute and funny like the ones he made at the little girl.... ep.4 brings us back to the beginning of episode 1 and it was still very intense.....the scene of taking out the bullet was a bit gory to watch and it made me scream ouch for him a few times.....ep.4 ended so good which seems like everythin is just startin to get twisted..... it seems everything has to do with nuclear weapons...i'm still not so sure wat IRIS is, but i'm thinkin it might be the blueprint to the nuclear weapon that Hyun Joon's parents were building or it might be related somehow....or i can be wrong cuz didn't TOP said sumthin about a list.....i believe Hyun Joon's parents and the cross are the important links to all of this.....wat do u guys think? |

I finished episode 5 and 6 without subs because I wanted to know what happens next and the drama is getting so intense and takes a big turn from the first few episodes where we got to see lovey dovey scenes of LBH and KTH but now no more
I'm enjoying everyone's acting in here it really contributes to the success of IRIS I agree with you sweetbub Hyun Joon's parents and the cross are important links to what might happen later, right now the drama just kind of went over it really quick and hasn't explained much more but I think Hyun Joon after being betrayed by the NSS will find more secrets hidden within these two...also what were his parents making that got them killed, he'll probably remember more of his childhood which can play a bigger role later |

^Big Bang participates in IRIS ost album. The title of the song is "Hallelujah". G-Dragon and Teddy Park wrote the song. TOP & GD does the rap while Taeyang does the singing. I hope Iris fans will like the song. xD

One word which I can use to describe this drama: AWESOME
I think it's better than black and white in terms of action part others I don't comment 1st. I might comment after finishing it:P. I like the plot so far, but few things I felt that not really logic. Anyway, this is drama which not necessary to be logic. I really can't wait for next episode to answer my curiosity. Please, release all series, I really can't wait. It's torture to have only 2 episodes each week:-( |

I heard this drama is pretty intense? It's getting pretty high ratings in Korea is it? The thing with Korean dramas though are the long wait for it to end, two episodes per week and a total of 20 episodes. I'm planning to watch this when maybe after 10-12 episodes have been out? Did they just finish airing episode 6?
Reading from the notes, the cast actually went to film in Russia?? That's pretty cool...when are the Russia scenes going to come out? Or they are already out? |

"Iris" ratings continue to soar 2009.11.12 The ratings for KBS TV series "Iris" continued to soar into its fifth week of showing, according to a survey on Thursday. According to TNS Media Korea, the spy drama topped TNS' TV chart with a viewership rating of 32.7 percent, gaining two percent from its previous episode to land comfortably above the 30 percent mark. A poll by AGB Nielsen Media Research showed that the Wednesday and Thursday night drama did not top the 30 percent mark but gained 1.1 percent from last week to report a 28.2 percent viewership rating. "Iris" ranked behind "Jolly Widows" which currently stands at No.1 on AGB's chart but closed on in its gap with the KBS drama by less than half of a percent. Several of South Korea's top actors including Lee Byung-hun, Kim Tae-hee and Jung Jun-ho star in "Iris" which has been on air since mid-October. source *Wow, Iris has surpassed the 30% mark. xD |

IRIS is just an amazing drama. @_@ It's so intense, and I'm always going omgomgomg every time I'm watching it. I hate how in one episode, they show one little part but they don't explain how it happened, and then you have to wait until the next episode to get all the details. TOP really scares me haha. Specifically that one scene where he shoots the man in the car. *shivers*

omo omo.....the plot is gettin so intense!!! especially all the action scenes, it gets my heart beating faster.....it's not about who's acting in it anymore, but the storyline is getting really good! the love story part not so much....or it's just tat i'm losing my patience with Hyun Joon and Seung Hee not knowin tat the other is still alive and they r so close to seein each other each time....i wonder how long they will drag this on and take for them to reunite....at this moment, i just caught up in the subbed episodes up to ep. 9.....but the previews for ep. 10 looks like a possibility, but i dunt kno yet.....can't wait for the rest to be subbed.....i'm trying really hard to hold myself back from watchin the raws to find out wat happens next....
we finally know wat IRIS is....but there is still so much more to be revealed....hackers are amazing yet they can be so scary at the same time...look at wat they can do with all the advanced technology! the scene with TOP (Vick) and Hyun Joon was so intense....TOP is so expressionless and cold, but i still love him...heheh....okay, i've got to stop fangirling him here....the Yuki part was very sad....and i'm startin to hate Sa Woo already..... forkcollector, i agree with you tat it's annoying on how they show a little part at the end of the episode but they dunt tell u how it happened until the next episode....it gets me so confused! but now tat i kno how they do things, i think i'm used to it so it bothers me a little bit less as i watch each episode.... can't wait for the next subbed episode!!! this drama definitely deserves the high ratings! i'm also fallin in love with the themesong by Baek Ji Young and Big Bang's Hallelujah |
