Ariel Lin, who accepted the best Actress award in GBA last year, is a role model in the entertainment circle.

When she was 18 years old, she made her debut. She had to juggle between school and career, sustaining her family’s livelihood. She will not allow herself to be careless on her family’s needs.

On the day of the photo shoot for Citibella’s (March) cover page, Ariel Lin happens to be the one of the hot topics in the Entertainment circle. News of Ariel’s secret hospitalization and suspected brain surgery are widely circulated by the media. Though we are behind closed door and still unaware of the recent speculations, we can detect that Ariel was feeling very unwell and was unable to stand for a long time. When we asked, Ariel merely responded with a smile and never said much. We spent almost 5 hours for this photo shoot. You can see that in every job that she is assigned to, Ariel will treat them with extreme profession and importance. It is hard to picture that this unswerving determination comes from a demure, pretty and young girl who happens to be in front of us right now.

In fact, a senior reporter who interviewed Ariel Lin before, gave her description on Ariel as [“To put it simply, Ariel is a good girl with self discipline.”] When Ariel was a university student and also a ‘queen of Idol drama’, she juggled herself busily between her studies and schoolwork. She would follow her agenda closely and would never miss her lessons unless forced to. She needed to revolve between the contrast of the simplicity of school life and the dark side of the entertainment circle; at the same time, taking care of her family’s needs. Still, she is able to take adversity with a smile.

Dedicated, professional, high expectation, well-behaved. These are the common qualities which most celebrities would describe Ariel. Her debut started because of the ‘Train Subway’s Young Beauty’ contest which she had participated in. Ariel has always been opinionated, and also bold, [“When the chance comes, I will brace myself to give it a try. During the process, I often feel that a lot of things need to be overcome. However, I am also able to see the part of me which is imperfect. Regardless of the outcome, I still want to give it a try. Fame; from struggle to coexistence.

Eileen Chang (Zhang Ai Lin) once had a famous saying which acts as an encouragement to many (but also a setback to many): Get famous while you are still young. Applying this saying on Ariel is completely relevant. But behind her excellent achievements, Ariel also has her own struggles to overcome on her way to fame. [“My personality is sensitive and also contradicting.”] When Ariel was talking to us about this, she also mentioned that she once tried to struggle and resist with ‘fame’ but eventually, she learned to live with it.

[“I feel that there is no turning back on fame, and no way to reverse back to your normal life. After stepping into the entertainment circle, I became sealed up. I know there are things that I lost during this period, but also gained something at the same time.”] Ariel has been making constant adjustment on her mindset for the past 7, 8 years. Under the extreme pressure of her work’s scope and facing numerous misunderstood values, the inconvenience she faced when getting stalked by paparazzi, the media’s intense concern on irrelevant reports but not on her acting skills, and a whole lot more. But being a celebrity actress, I am happy to share my life and thoughts with everyone as this is one of the meaningful part in life. My thought for now is: able to do something meaningful for more people. The happiest moment in my career is when people told me: Because of you, I change for the better. This is very significant to me.”]

Ariel’s manager, Zhou Meiyu shares an incident which shows Ariel’s growth in her inner thoughts. [[“There was once when I was very angry about an incident. But when Ariel saw that, she told me [“Don’t be angry. When you are older and reflect on this incident, you will realize that ‘Yeah, this is nothing serious to be angry at all.’ You will feel better once it is over.”] When I heard that, I was surprised; it was like our roles have exchanged. Her thoughts are getting mature by the day; becoming her to enlighten me now.”]], said a smiling Zhou Meiyu.

Heartfelt anticipation; Two wishes

Though this is the second month of 2009, we asked Ariel what she wants to accomplish this year. The surprising thing is she did not mention about wishing for excellent success in her career or earn more money etc. She said earnestly, [“The first thing I want to accomplish is to have more guts.”] She gave a smile after saying that and added [“I meant having guts as in not being too self assertive.”]

[“I am someone who is always full of apprehension, including suppression of my moral thoughts, other people’s feelings and more. I will hide my true feelings to accommodate the others. All along, I am very self disciplined and also thinks too much. But after that, you will come to realize that there is a lack of surprise being in that state. So now, I am beginning to break my rules to have more possibilities in life.”]

Ariel Lin who is always self-controlled also yearns to get completely drunk. Of course, doing it in an extremely safe surrounding with people she is very comfortable with. She would like to hear from the people on her reaction when she gets drunk. As a celebrity actress, there’s bound to have celebration feasts, gatherings, etc.; didn’t she get drunk before? Ariel shook her head and said; [“No.”] In other words, it’s more of relaxing herself than getting drunk. And this is actually one of Ariel’s wishes in 2009.
[“I hope I can loosen up because I’m very uptight.”] In fact, because of her overwhelmed workload and not allowing herself to make mistakes, she is always at a very tense state. It affects her recent health badly and was diagnosed with ‘Endocrine disorder(s)’. The present Ariel is currently coming in touch with her shortcomings, and in turn learns to relax herself. This is also important to an actor; [“Director Winnie also suggested that I should relax more as it will be helpful to my acting. Imagine this; an actor who is able to perform with all his/her heart and emotions, this is considered the highest peak of happiness for all actors.”]

Her most desire, Love.

According to psychologist Maslow's theory of hierarchy of needs, humans have 5 levels of needs: Physiological, Safety, Belonging/love, Esteem, and Self-actualization. At the present stage, Ariel is using her own ability to achieve her independent means and the security of a decent life (Physiological and Safety needs). However, she is trying now to accomplish and reform her needs on Belonging/love. Since her debut, Ariel has always been the breadwinner for her family; from clearing her family debts to buying a house and car for them. She holds herself responsible for her family needs. For example, if she earns $10, she will put aside $9 for her family. Ariel has always treat her family with strong and comprehensive affection but these years, she learns that [“There’s no definite of good or bad”]. When she starts to relax, she also starts to reflects the real meaning of ‘giving the best for her family’. [“Giving my best to them”, does it really means it is ‘good’ for them?”] Ariel continued seriously, [“This might deprive them of a chance to grow and thus, they might become too dependent on me. In this aspect, I discussed with them before.”] How did her parents respond? [“They are very surprised because they think that I’m not that little girl in the past anymore.”]

It is inevitable that the little girl will grow up one day. However, Ariel’s growing process is faster than the others. There is another process that she is bound to encounter when grown up; love. In response, she said simply, [“Love is something that I yearn to have most this year.”] At this moment, her eyes are filled with beautiful soaring sparks.

But is she easy to pursue? She gave quite an honest answer. Ariel felt that it involves on whether the frequency match between the two parties. [“If our frequencies, values, attitude in lives, etc.; all of these approaches are similar to mine, I don’t see the problem of having the difficulty to pursue me. If the other party is not suitable, I will not let anything start in the first place, it might be difficult for him then.”]

On her preferences for her ideal guy, it includes independent, faithful, knowledgeable, cheerful, etc. What about appearance wise? Ariel responded in a very ‘Ariel Lin’ style- short and sweet: [“Pleasing and alluring to my eyes.”] In love, Ariel will not feel burden by her idol package. She even confessed that she had an admiration for someone now. Who is he? [“I would like to keep it to myself.”] It is fine that we do not have the answer. During the whole interview, Ariel shares a lot and there are almost no pauses between her sentences. When she was asked of her participation on the Harmony Home’s charity for babies with AIDS, her tone was overwhelmed with emotions.

AIDS’ day falls on every December. Last year, Ariel was invited by Kiehl to be the ambassador for babies with AIDS. To show her support, she initiated by kissing toddlers for almost 10 seconds to prove that HIV virus cannot be transmitted through saliva.

In actual fact, it’s not only last year that Ariel Lin has been caring for the young who are diagnosed with AIDS. She have been giving her silent support for 2 years plus, [“There are still lives that can be saved and given a chance to nurture!”] Though Ariel was unwell, her tone when talking about them was firm and determined, [“If everyone is willing to understand and let go of the discrimination and misconstrue perception of the illness, I believe things will be different now.”]

As what Ariel said, if everyone can show concern, the society and a lot of things might change for the better. Though the difference could be a little, but it could lit a light of hope for those in need.

Ever since she revealed her bare face on the variety show <<KangXi Lai le>>, her near to perfect complexion swept everyone away as there is hardly any difference. Everyone was curious and interested to know her secret to achieve a complexion like hers. [font="tahoma,sans-serif"]

In response, Ariel gave a reply with her usual modest style. Her reply sounds ordinary and simple but we know; to execute it will be a challenge. Ariel’s excellent complexion, [“I believe it had a lot to do with my lifestyle.”] Her lifestyle consists of living like a ‘farmer’, waking up at 4, 5am, sleeping at 9pm; she will not miss the golden time of beauty sleep from 11pm to 2am. Furthermore, her diet mainly consists of healthy organic products, [“Because of our work stress, I don’t want to add anymore burden to my body.”] Her favourite food are organic soya bean milk, roasted sweet potatoes and sweet soup desserts. On her procedures to maintain her complexion, it includes the fundamental basics: clean, moisturize, sun block.

Because of her dropsy/edema prone physique, Ariel has her own style of dressing up. How to make use of the trimming of the clothes to enhance your body’s shape? To this, Ariel has something to share from her experience, [“I will choose designs that are high-waist as they lengthen your waist line. This is to create a visual effect of the lower half of the body being slender. I will select clothes that are not tight fitting but of good fit.”]

Believe me, getting completely wasted is EXTREMELY overrated, the pain later is never worth the fun you have in its height. GAH! Flahsbacks of horrible nights of passing out in showers, and not even being able to walk the next day for fear of having to throw up again....
