The Best Moment – Ariel Lin

Innocent, persistent 'Xiang Qin' in [It started with a kiss]. Funny, silly 'Huang Rong' in [Legend of the Condor Heroes]. Our (the media) impression of cute and gentle Ariel Lin is strongly prejudiced by her drama character.

After the interview, our prejudiced impression of her was completely overthrown. Almost every generation will have a new version of [Legend of the Condor Heroes] to represent each generation. When we are at the growing stage, we watched the version of Julian Cheung and Athena Zhu as Guo Jing and Huang Rong respectively. The elders will always remark: The unsurpassed of all is still the version of Felix Wong and Barbara Yung. As being said as the classic, it is hard to go beyond. But humans must always seek improvement and not staying put forever. That was what Ariel Lin told me.

Unwilling to remain static, chooses to challenge oneself. Before getting involved in [Legend of the Condor Heroes], she never read any of Jin Yong's novels before. Rejected the chance of acting in [Hot Shot], she used the time to do research on her character. It is said that in order to slim down, Ariel only consumed 'water-cooked' food and eventually, she managed to lose 7 kgs. In order to be able to get herself involved in the role faster, she specifically appointed a martial instructor to coach her for 2 to 3 months on the martial arts' movement.

The sixth generation of the TV version's 'Huang Rong', possessing the 'never give up and never turn back' attitude.

Have you ever thought of acting as the role, 'Huang Rong' before?
Ariel: Never thought of before. Initially, when the producer came to Taiwan for discussion, it's him who helped in buying the original novel for me (laughs).

Never read any of the Jin Yong's novels before?
Ariel: I did plan to read when I had slightly more time during my university days, but I never expected that the first year I debuted is during my first year in University. So I never managed to read it (laughs).

[Legend of the Condor Heroes] is a classic drama. Do you feel pressured when you decided to take up the role?
Ariel: I was thinking since I can't possibly always choose roles which are easy to portray; I will also select some classic roles.

In the future, will you prepare yourself for more different acting path?
Ariel: I will look forward to have different performances in acting; I don't want to have roles which are repetitive. I really want to attempt stage play; I often listen to Xiao Zong (Joe Cheng) sharing animatedly and enthusiastically about the fun and exciting events which can happen in a stage play. I want to give it a try on experiencing the importance of team's cooperation and acting according to the audiences' immediate responses during the play.

Your golden reel couple image with Xiao Zong (Joe Cheng) had left a deep impact in the viewers' heart. How do you feels towards him?
Ariel: Like the feeling of a family. He can be counted as my closest male friend in the entertainment industry. We don't really talk on the phone often; we mostly send messages.

How do you feel being the 'ideal daughter in law' of Joe's dad?
Ariel: Oh… able to be loved by the elder is really quite special. (Reporter: Are you close to his dad?) No, No, haha… I only met him when [ISWAK] started filming and he was there to visit, that's all…

Almost all who collaborated with you are first grade male celebrities. Is there anyone (male celebrity) whom you like to work with the most?
Ariel: (Within 3 seconds) Tony Leung (laughs). Yeah, maybe we cannot act in the same generation but to be able to participate in the same production, quietly watching him acting; it's an enjoyable process already. Or maybe his interaction with the crews or director… I would like to see him in some of the situations he faced during working.

Have you met Tony Leung personally?
Ariel: I met him at a tea session after the one of the year's Golden Horse award show. (Reporter: Did you talk to him?) In a very modest and polite manner (laughs). Since his early works till now, he always left a different impact in me in his performances every time. I like him as a person and his attitude in life at the same time.

On screen, she is always protected and cared for by the male lead. She acted convincingly as the roles of having no opinions of her own/silly/frail and gentle. In real life, she was working and studying until she graduated; she was responsible for her family's welfare; helping her family to clear their debts.

Ariel was crowned best actress in GBA for her role in [They Kiss Again]; she said 'Xiang Qin' and her are similar in their conviction of being firm and persistent.

After receiving the best actress award, what target did you set for yourself in the future?
Ariel: My target always remains the same, though my feeling now tends to be more excited.

What does (drama) rating means to you?
Ariel: Rating is basically given by the viewers, and television production plays a big part in manipulating it. Of course, the script must be good; but no matter what, an actor cannot possibly bear the full responsibility of the drama's good or bad. Thus, if I were really dedicated and gave my best in my acting at that moment, I feel that rating is not the most important.

Any events which influenced you the most these past years?
Ariel: Should be Beatrice Xu and Hu Ge's car accidents. Moreover, their accidents happened not long from each other. One has left the world; the other is lucky to survive from it.

Any changes to your outlook in life?
Ariel: I will want to live for the moment. I think the changes will not be drastic, but I will still do whatever I need to do. I don't want to live with regrets. My attitude will be 'I will not change my mind once decided.'

Gah this interview makes me want to watch LoCH even though I HATE period dramas with a passion! Ariel is always so eloquent and down to earth. I love reading all of her interviews. I really hope she goes on to achieve all of her dreams!

*goes to search who Tony Leung is* comp.gif

EDIT: Ah! He's been in a couple of movies I've heard of, but I've never seen any of them. He is a handsome guy!

i am watching LOCH '98 right now. My all-time fave is the classic LOCH with Felix Wong and late Barbara Yung. I got to say I was very satisfy and impress with Ariel 's portrayal of Huang Rong. I haven't seen anyone embody that role for a long time since Barbara Yung. I've watched many of Ariel's drama from China and Taiwan. She has great acting skills for her generation. Many people don't like Ariel Lin because of the way how she looks (I wasn't too fond of her either back then) but I started watching It Started With A Kiss and her other dramas and her acting has improved. Plus I read articles about her and while in Taiwan I bought her Bagel Diary book and I find that she is a very hardworking and intelligent young lady, very different from what her roles portray her as; in the long run I see her becoming a grade A actress.

It's the one with Ariel Lin and Hu Ge... I haven't watched any of the LoCH dramas, and I don't know who Crystal Liu is, but I don't think this is the one you're referring to.

Just searched it, you mean this one: http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Return_of_the_Condor_Heroes_2006
