Korean star Eugene Kim thanks 'kapamilyas'

Korean actress Eugene Kim took time out Friday to thank her Filipino kapamilya with a visit to ABS-CBN, which aired two of her hit television drama series.

The actress, who gained popularity in the Philippines through Koreanovelas "Save the Last Dance for Me" and "Wonderful Life", delighted fans when she appeared on top-rated noontime show "Wowowee."

Waving and smiling to everyone upon her arrival in Manila Thursday morning, Eugene said: "I think [the] people are very gentle and kind... that makes me happy."

The Department of Tourism (DOT) tapped Eugene as publicity envoy during a travel trade mission in Seoul, South Korea last June.

"Kim was picked because she fits the demographics of our target market: the honeymooners and young single people or those with families who are all looking for holiday destinations," Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano said during the event.

The DOT said Eugene's scheduled visits to tourist spots in the country will be covered by a Korean TV network and print media to further promote the Philippines in her country.

Yah, Mariel Rodriguez is jealous of Eugene becasue she's more beautiful than Mariel with or without make up! About Zanjoe, I hope Christian Bautista of Piolo Pascual was the one who sings for Eugene. A year after attracting over 480,000 Korean visitors to the Philippines, Korea has remained the country’s largest tourist market in Asia with an estimated target of 600,000 arrivals by December, and is today’s leading investor of multi-billion peso worth of tourism-related projects.

To strengthen this sales pitch, Durano has appointed famous Korean singer/actress Eugene Kim as the Philippines’ special tourism envoy to Korea. Kim is the country’s second celebrity endorser to be conferred this title, next to fellow Korean actor Kim Sung-Min.

Durano said Kim was chosen for her wholesome image and stature as a topnotch entertainer in her country.

Kim will help promote the DoT’s subcampaign geared to entice Korean lady travelers. She is set to appear in a FIT (Foreign Individual Traveler) Ladies’ Guide Book and an audiovisual material featuring the best spots for dining, shopping and entertainment in Manila, Cebu, Bohol, and Boracay. Her recent familiarization tour to these places will also be covered and aired by various magazines and stations in Korea. The Department of Tourism enlists the help of a Koreanovela actress to pitch for the Philippines.

Like the wave it was named for, hallyu---the passion for Korean pop culture---came out of nowhere to sweep the region off its feet. Its success was shortly matched in the areas of business and tourism. South Korea is now the 10th largest economy in the world.

In the Philippines, hallyu is a more recent phenomenon, having come by way of F4 and Chinovela mania, but its effects have been no less potent. A peek at a couple of Filipino fora (such as PinoyExchange and Tsinoy.com) have also unveiled several sustained discussions not only on Jewel in the Palace or My Girl, but, surprisingly, on such K-pop artists as Lee Hyori and Shinwa, who have yet to release a record in the country.

But just as Korea has become a byword in the country, the Philippines is also as popular to South Koreans.

According to Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano, the Philippines is one of the hottest tourist destinations for Koreans, who have been traveling to and from the country in droves of 45,000 arrivals per month in recent years.

"The value of the Korean market in the country is that their interests are very diverse. The destinations they visit are not the usual. Of course they go to the usual like Boracay, Cebu, Palawan, Bohol... But they are also the ones playing golf in Zamboanga City. They’re also the ones that put up the golf academy in Cagayan de Oro. They're the ones operating the Pinatubo spa and the Pinatubo tours... Not only that, they come here not just as leisure tourists, they also come here to learn," says Durano.

This tourism push has also translated to more Korean investments in the country, including a huge infusion of capital in the Mimosa Leisure Estate in Clark and the Seraph Hotel in Boracay and the five-star Imperial Palace Waterpark Resort and Spa in Maribago, Lapu-Lapu City.

With this in mind, the Department of Tourism has mounted an aggressive campaign to promote our tourist attractions to the Koreans.

Wonderful Eugene

This year the government is enlisting the services of Eugene (Kim Yoo-Jin). The star of Save the Last Dance and Wonderful Life is the newest voice and/or face of the Philippine’s tourism campaign.

Eugene was born in Seoul but grew up in Guam and is fluent in Chamorro, English, and her native Korean. The 24-year-old actress-singer is among the most sought-after celebrities in Korea and is considered one of the 10 most beautiful Korean actresses (according to Asiafinest.com).

Debuting in 1997 as one of the members of SES (Sea, Eugene, and Shoo), one of the most successful all-girl bands in Korea (with 10 albums to their name), Eugene made the successful transition to acting in 2002 as the female lead in Loving You. The following year, she debuted as a solo artist and has released two albums since. Her third album is still in the pipeline.

At the launch of the Philippine campaign a week ago, the actress confessed she has never been to the country. Nonetheless, she has heard good things about the Philippines from friends, which include some Filipinos, while she was staying in Guam. Thus, she is familiar with the Filipino features and even recognizes words such as mahal kita.

"I am very honored to be here," enthuses Eugene, "the people are very kind and gentle. I love the weather and the environment."

As local tourism's new spokesman, she says, she will make sure that she fully experience the top tourist destinations of the country and relate the good news to fellow Koreans.

Eugene's visit, which will take her to Manila, Cebu, Bohol, and Boracay, will be documented and used in posters, commercials and print ads promoting the Philippines. At the same time, her tour will also be covered and aired by MTV Korea, KBS Entertainment, and Olive Network. The tourism department has also commissioned two prominent Korean travel magazines, Travie and Tour de Monde, to do a piece on her sojourn.

Last year 480,000 Korean tourists visited the country, says Durano. "Hopefully this year, with the help of Eugene, this number would hit 600,000."

This coincided with the launching of the Department Of Tourism’s "7,107 Philippines: More than You can Imagine" campaign.

"I think the people are so kind and gentle. I specially love the weather," Eugene said in a press conference attended by local and Korean mediamen.

Durano said that Eugene would be taking the role as endorser. "At a personal level, with her experiences here, she would be talking about it, to her friends and relatives in Korea."

Durano also gave the local press a glimpse of the 3 TV commercials commissioned by the DOT specially for the Korean market.

Eugene will appear in the DOT’s audiovisual promotional material that will feature the best tourist spots in Manila, Cebu, Bohol and Boracay. Her visit to these places will also be covered and aired by MTV Korea, KBS Entertainment, and Olive Network.

Durano said that this new campaign will bring in more Korean investors and tourists in the country.

This, according to Durano, is the importance of Eugene’s endorsement of the Philippines to the 10 million Korean outbound market.

"The country has put in place incentives to improve the investment climate to sustain macroeconomic stability to match the influx of Korean tourists. And the Korean investors have responded favorably," Durano added.

RP's beautiful spots dazzle Korean idol


Impressed by the natural beauty of the Philippines and the hospitality of the Filipinos, Kim left for Incheon from Manila after shuttling between Cebu and Bohol and enjoying a brief stay on Boracay Island and Villa Escudero for various activities.


In Cebu, Kim immersed herself in water sports and went on island hopping before having a Filipino-style spa treatment at Shangri-La Hotel Mactan. She went to Bohol the following day to visit the Tarsier Sanctuary and had lunch at Loboc River and pictorial at the Chocolate Hills. She returned to Cebu in the early evening, had a pictorial the following morning featuring her experience with Filipino breakfast, then left for Manila in the evening for her return flight to Incheon.

Kim kicked off her week-long tour last Aug. 17 with a pictorial at the historic Intramuros. She had snapshots at the gate of Intramuros, aboard a kalesa, along the streets, atop the walls overlooking the golf course, and at the Rizal monument in Luneta before finally having dinner at a seafood restaurant to have a taste of the country’s exotic native cuisine.

The following day she attended a press conference hosted by the Department of Tourism (DOT). Introducing her as the Philippines’ new tourism envoy to Korea, DOT Secretary Joseph Ace H. Durano said:

"We are pleased to announce that Ms. Yoo-Jin Kim has been conferred the said title during my last visit to Korea for the Korea World Travel Fair in June 2006."

In an interview, Kim said she was proud and honored to be the Philippines’ tourism envoy in Korea as she thanked the Filipino people for the warm welcome and hospitality.

Kim also appeared on ABS-CBN’s noontime program "Wowowee". The said network ran two of her TV drama series this year. Later that afternoon, she had still shots at Glorietta while shopping at Philippine branded stores, and left for The Fort for dinner, pictorial, and disco.

Last Aug. 19, Kim toured the Villa Escudero theme park aboard a carabao-drawn kalesa to relive the Spanish plantation era in Philippine history. She had still shots with Filipiniana-dressed plantation workers, with Filipino cuisine in a fiesta-like setting, and at native Filipino houses before having lunch by the river with a cultural presentation. In the evening, she dined at Via Mare in Greenbelt 3, Makati City, to experience Filipino cuisine in a cosmopolitan setting.

The next morning, Kim flew to Caticlan for an overnight stay on Boracay Island to have a sampling of the country’s pristine beaches, spas, and the famous Boracay nightlife.

Kim’s visit is sponsored by Boracay Regency Beach Resort, Shangri-La’s Mactan Island Resort and Spa, and South East Asian Airlines (SEAir).

Korea’s top-class entertainer, Kim has received numerous awards, including the Golden Disk for Korean pop and the SBS Seoul Music Awards in 1998.

Among her popular TV hits are Save the Last Dance in 2004 and Wonderful Life in 2005.

Kim was also adjudged Korea’s Best Dresser in 1999 and honored with the KBS Acting Awards in 2002 and widely praised by producers for her acting performance.

A Christian and a graduate of French Literature at the Korea University in Seoul, Kim is adored by fans and praised by the government for her unblemished reputation.

thanks for posting the article da-a. i have a copy of that newspaper with that article. it has four pics of eugene in bohol ovwelooking the chocolate hills, walking on the white sands of boracay and at villa escudero with a carabao. she's really pretty. i'll try to scan the pics so i can post it here.

RP's beautiful spots dazzle Korean idol
Impressed by the natural beauty of the Philippines and the hospitality of the Filipinos, Kim left for Incheon from Manila after shuttling between Cebu and Bohol and enjoying a brief stay on Boracay Island and Villa Escudero for various activities.
In Cebu, Kim immersed herself in water sports and went on island hopping before having a Filipino-style spa treatment at Shangri-La Hotel Mactan. She went to Bohol the following day to visit the Tarsier Sanctuary and had lunch at Loboc River and pictorial at the Chocolate Hills. She returned to Cebu in the early evening, had a pictorial the following morning featuring her experience with Filipino breakfast, then left for Manila in the evening for her return flight to Incheon.

Kim kicked off her week-long tour last Aug. 17 with a pictorial at the historic Intramuros. She had snapshots at the gate of Intramuros, aboard a kalesa, along the streets, atop the walls overlooking the golf course, and at the Rizal monument in Luneta before finally having dinner at a seafood restaurant to have a taste of the country’s exotic native cuisine.

The following day she attended a press conference hosted by the Department of Tourism (DOT). Introducing her as the Philippines’ new tourism envoy to Korea, DOT Secretary Joseph Ace H. Durano said:

"We are pleased to announce that Ms. Yoo-Jin Kim has been conferred the said title during my last visit to Korea for the Korea World Travel Fair in June 2006."

In an interview, Kim said she was proud and honored to be the Philippines’ tourism envoy in Korea as she thanked the Filipino people for the warm welcome and hospitality.

Kim also appeared on ABS-CBN’s noontime program "Wowowee". The said network ran two of her TV drama series this year. Later that afternoon, she had still shots at Glorietta while shopping at Philippine branded stores, and left for The Fort for dinner, pictorial, and disco.

Last Aug. 19, Kim toured the Villa Escudero theme park aboard a carabao-drawn kalesa to relive the Spanish plantation era in Philippine history. She had still shots with Filipiniana-dressed plantation workers, with Filipino cuisine in a fiesta-like setting, and at native Filipino houses before having lunch by the river with a cultural presentation. In the evening, she dined at Via Mare in Greenbelt 3, Makati City, to experience Filipino cuisine in a cosmopolitan setting.

The next morning, Kim flew to Caticlan for an overnight stay on Boracay Island to have a sampling of the country’s pristine beaches, spas, and the famous Boracay nightlife.

Kim’s visit is sponsored by Boracay Regency Beach Resort, Shangri-La’s Mactan Island Resort and Spa, and South East Asian Airlines (SEAir).

Korea’s top-class entertainer, Kim has received numerous awards, including the Golden Disk for Korean pop and the SBS Seoul Music Awards in 1998.

Among her popular TV hits are Save the Last Dance in 2004 and Wonderful Life in 2005.

Kim was also adjudged Korea’s Best Dresser in 1999 and honored with the KBS Acting Awards in 2002 and widely praised by producers for her acting performance.

A Christian and a graduate of French Literature at the Korea University in Seoul, Kim is adored by fans and praised by the government for her unblemished reputation.
