Judging

We are still finalising the judges recruitment process but we assure you that there will be a minimum of 3 judges. You can still apply for a judging position, just proceed to post #2 to find out what's involved. Potential judges who have applied for the position please have your judging ready by September 24 Positions filled.

CONTEST REQUIREMENTS

Am I Qualified?

Who can join? If you fall under ONE of these TWO categories, you are qualified

1. Being in the Members group or above (including the Crew!)

2. Being an AF-newbie who either

a. has a thread in AF Recording Studio prior to the announcement of this contest (before September 12) or,
b. has joined AF for at least 6 months or,
c. has 35+ posts

What are the Song Requirements?

Round 1: You are only required to submit 1 song. It can be of any language and must be at least 2 minutes in length (including at least 90 seconds of singing). We encourage everyone to record a full song since it will be a requirement for subsequent rounds.

All submissions need to be sung on background music. If you need help with finding an instrumental for your entry, you can ask for help in the Instrumental/Karaoke Request thread. Submissions must NOT contain profanity.

Your submissions for AF Idol 2009 MUST be unique. In other words, you cannot submit songs that you have submitted for previous years' Idol, other online singing competitions or even songs that have been posted on other forums. If you have a thread at AFRS, be sure that you have not updated your thread with the song before. If you have, and want to submit the same song, you need to submit a new version so that we can determine your improvement. We have spies around, and if we catch you, you are deemed to disqualification!

You can only submit songs that you recorded. You cannot submit for someone else. If it's your sister or brother who wants to join, ask them to create an account at AF and qualify themselves.

Q: I'm an AF-n00b/AF-newbie, am I allowed to join?

AF-n00b & AF-newbie who registered after April 1, 2009: you need 35+ posts to qualify, so start posting more!

AF-n00b who registered before/on April 1, 2009: you need 10+ posts to qualify, so start posting more!

AF-newbie who registered before/on April 1, 2009: you are automatically qualified.

You need to have the correct amount of posts before you sign up. If you don't meet our requirements, your entry will be bounced back and you will need to resubmit once you have fulfilled the requirements. So please don't waste both our time and yours, only sign up if you've qualified. Remember DO NOT SPAM along the process. One-liners are considered spams. They will be deleted and your postcount will stay the same!

Q: Where can I find my AF Member Number?

Hover the mouse cursor over your name and you will see a link. Whatever number appears on that link is your Member Number. For example, hippokathy88's profile link is http://asianfanatics.net/forum/showuser1348.html, her Member Number is 1348.

Q: Can I post my entry up and show people?

No you cannot. Just to be fair, we would like all contestants to be anonymous till Round 3. Even the Judges won't know who you are until after Round 2. If you are caught advertising yourself or posting your entry up at AFRS or other forums, you will be punished . Remember, we have spies and stalkers...

Q: I submitted my song as a Guest Performance for previous years' Idol, am I still allowed to use it?

Unfortunately not, that will defeat our purpose of anonymity because people may remember you from the previous years.

Q: I don't have a good microphone, can I still join?

Yes you can! Our judges might comment on your mic's quality but rest assured, they will not take points off if your mic buzzes like a bee.

Q: I want to sing in a language that I'm not fluent in... will I be marked down for sounding funny?

Not everyone knows every language so you will not be judged on how fluent you sound or how many words you've mispronounced. It is, however, still best to sing in a language that you are comfortable with, as you're able to concentrate on your singing more than worrying about what you're singing.

Q: What program do I use to record?

If you are new to this, we recommend Audacity as it is free, simple to install and easy to use. When you save your song for the 1st time, it will ask you for a lame_enc.dll file, download it here.

The next popular recording program is Adobe Audition. This is not a free program and is rather complicated to use but if you want to try it out, e-mail hippokathy@hotmail.com and hippokathy88 will provide you with the program.

If you have any technical questions, ask them at the Singing + Recording thread. We don't guarantee that we can answer all your questions but we will try our best.

Q: I can't seem to find an instrumental for my song, help!

If you need help with finding an instrumental, you can ask for help at the Instrumental/Karaoke Request thread! Again we don't guarantee we can find everything but we will try our best. If there's no instrumental available, you can try and vocal remove the song. We'd rather you not sing along with the original singer because it's hard to judge your performance when the original singer is screaming in the background.

Q: I can only save my file as .wav or .wma but I need to submit an .mp3 file, what do I do?

There is an online Media Converter available =)

Q: When will each round start and end?

Round 1: September 20 - October 4
Round 2: October 10 - October 25
Round 3: November 10 - November 25

Q: How many people are advancing to Round 2?

The number depends on how tight the scores are but you can expect roughly about 1/3 the number of Round 1 contestants will advance.

Q: When will we find out the contestants' identities?

At the start of Round 3, but you will only find out who the Finalists are, not all contestants. This is, however, the time when everyone is allowed to reveal themselves so it's entirely up to the rest of the contestants (those who didn't make it to Round 3) to tell you which number they were.

Q: Who will be listening to my entry? Will they be able to download them?

The Organisers will be the ones downloading and checking if your entry complies with the rules. It will then be uploaded onto Soundclick for the Judges to judge and the Audience to listen to and vote for (in round 2 and 3). So basically the world will be listening to you , but all entries will only be made downloadable once the contest is over. If you by any chance do not wish your entry to be downloaded, please specify so in your sign-up form.

Hello Hello, I am Mr.AF 2009 indeed, and first thing I wanna do as Mr.AF 2009 is help out with the upcoming AF favourite event, AF Idol 2009!!! (2nd thing is of course my promised SNSD Dance lol!)

Onto the serious stuff..


A judging panel is a crucial component of every singing competition. These people are the ones who give the contestants feedbacks on the performances and help them realise what needs to be worked on. In AF Idol specificly, we value encouragement and non-bias. No matter whom you are judging, you are asked to remain fair at all time.

Q: So what does judging involve?

AF Idol 2009 is predicted to finish in mid December, so Judges need to be available from now till then. In Round 1, Judges only need to score, but in Round 2 & 3, you will need to score and give feedbacks. We would like to advise you that judging is hard work. Normally Judges are given 7-10 days to judge, depends on the number of submissions. From past experiences, you would need to spend at least 10-20 minutes on each song (especially in Round 2 & 3). This is to ensure you have listened to the songs carefully to be able to give the comments & scoring that truthfully reflect the performances. A contestant's chance in advancing is placed in your hands so you don't want to fail them do you ? Please only apply if your schedule allows it. We have a timeframe to follow and we do not wish for any delays (though we will definitely be understanding if unfortunate circumstances arise!)

But of course judging can be a lot of fun, otherwise why do people bother ? You get to learn a lot from other Judges along the process, improve on your judging style and last but not least, connect with the contestants on a whole new different level!

Q: Can I still join the contest as a contestant if I get picked as a Judge?

Unfortunately no. So you should only apply for judging if you're not planning to join

Instructions

1. E-mail us at af.idol@hotmail.com with the subject "AF Idol 2009 Judging Application - your username" to express your interest in applying for a judging position. We then will send you a zip file which contains the songs you will be judging.

2. Download the zip file. After you've unzipped it, you will find 8 songs in the folder. Listen to them, score and comment on them. Below are the scoring scheme & judging criteria

** 0 being the lowest, 12 being the highest
** Maximise your scoring to 2 decimal points if possible, preferably 0.25, 0.50, 0.75

Legend

Voice: voice quality, tone of voice, charisma

Techniques: voice control, breathing, falsetto, vibrato, belting etc

Tuning: able to stay on-tuned, on-pitched

Effort: does this sound like a one-take or a casual recording, have they put enough emotions in, on-timing, correct lyrics, if they have chosen a challenging song, have they put enough effort in to perfect it?

Uniqueness: have they improvised this and make it their own, does it stand out? Being super off-tuned or sloppy doesn't count as unique

Song Choice: does the song suit their voice/range/style? have they chosen a too easy/hard song?

Overall Impression: how much the judge has enjoyed the song? are you impressed?

Overall Performance: add up the scores you gave for the above sections

Comment: your detailed comment about the person's singing, a justification of your scoring. It doesn't have to be all negative, but being able to pick out flaws is important. Your comment doesnt have to be long, but be as specific as possible.

A few things NOT to be taken into account while scoring

Mixing: not everyone is a pro mixer, so do not give your score if a person's recording doesn't sound professional only because there's no reverb or there's too many offpeaks

Mic quality: not everyone owns a $300 mic, so if it buzzes too much or it's too muffled, don't deduct their points because of that

Pronounciation: not everyone is fluent in the language they sing, so don't give them a low score only because they mispronounce some words. A different story if they mispronounce a whole song though...

Those pointers above, you can comment on them... but please try not to let them influence your scoring.

3. This section is optional, only do it if you're interested in finding out your special ability and want to share the results with us. Here is the Delosis Musical Listening test. It helps you determine your ability of spotting off-beat-ness and off-tuned-ness. The test will take about 15-20 minutes to complete and you will need undivided attention to do well. After you have taken the test and found out your results, fill out the form (you don't actually need to submit it to the website) with your username and DOB so that we can see that these are your results and printscreen it. A time and date shown at the bottom of the screen is preferable so that we can validate the recentness of the results.

I was thinking of signing up to be a judge but then I don’t have the time and I can’t spot off-beat-ness or off-tuned-ness. I only notice it when someone points it out. haha. So all I can do is support those who join!
