Hey guys,
I hope this isn't a ridiculous question, but I'm a senior at a high school and I'm trying to write my personal statement for University of California (UC). I'm not here to ask for help on how to write or what I should write on it. As for now, I have decided to major in the business field, undecided. Writing the personal statement made me think why do I want to major in the business world, but my reason is kind of silly and I do not want to write the reason on my statement. So, here I am, asking you people, and hopefully I can understand more of myself to why I want to major in business. Although I know for a fact that I do NOT want to go into the medical field. The question I would like to ask those who are in the business field (and for those who are not can also answer. the more the merrier!) is: -Why did you choose to be study in the business field? -What happened to make you strive to become a businessman/women? Thank you in advance! =] |

If you don't really have a true passion, ambition or whatever for this job and it's just because you think you can get more occupation chances with it, you'd better not to choose it or you may regret for your decision later.

hey there xlsmilelx,
I am glad that you had started this thread. I hope that it is not too late for me to reply. I can do you a favor by answering you these two questions genuinely. Q. Why did you choose to be study in the business field? A. I have always shown interest in business starting at a young age. I started learning business in my early years when I had the advantages to buy boxes of cookies for wholesale prices and sell them back for retail prices to the local kids that I played with daily. Learning business is an every minute thing for me. I even packed my things and traveled to the business world not turning back, it's a passion now. Q. What happened to make you strive to become a businessman/woman? A. Business for me has always played a role in my life. Seeing my father provide for the family running off of his small business is like a gift in my opinion. At most times he would be capable of providing me a little more than I would ask for in life, and that really molded my image of a hero. Aside from my role model, I am a very curious and daring person. Adventuring through the business world and taking a lot of risks is my kind of thing. It was scary at first, now I just laugh at it. I hope that helps, don't be a stranger and add me as a friend. Thanks! |

Stranger88: as for now, i dont think i have a true passion for business, but wanting to work in a business office is something i really really want. and i believe going into the business world is quite competitive, so its not that easy to get in also (based on what i know though!)
phrontistes: it is not to late to reply. now i'm kind of more interested into business, wondering if i can adventure through the business world! thats awesome =] thanks for the reply you guys. it was quite helpful! |

I find lots of times, what ppl actually do is not related what they studied. of course there are the really specific areas.

@ xlsmilelx: may i ask why you want to work in a business office? is there something specific about that work environment that appeals to you? maybe that is something that you can think more about in writing your personal statement.
i guess like phrontistes i can try and answer those two questions you posed though my answers are quite the opposite. - I never liked business because I found that people were too competitive and that it was too cutthroat. I went through a bunch of majors and did not find anything that I liked so I just gave business a try. It was also something that my parents wanted me to do since they wanted me to have a stable job with stable income in the future. And since I did not know what to major in but also wanted my parents to be happy I decided to just do business as my major. I eventually learned more about the different aspects of business and eventually gained some interest in it and saw that I could do much more with it than just work in a big company. My main interest is in non-profit work and have been very fortunate in being able to actually combine my major with non-profit work and do something that really interests me. - Well, I am actually concentrating in accounting and the reason I want to become an accountant is so that I can help others. I know that doesn't sound like your typical but I really enjoy being able to use my knowledge in accounting and taxation to help other people. I want to eventually be able to offer free tax consultations to people who don't understand the tax laws and to help them save on their tax returns. I have volunteered at a Chinese community center filing tax returns for people and it gives me great joy to know that I was able to help them and teach them how to file their own tax returns. A lot of them are new immigrants so they're always so worried that they'll file something wrong and something bad will happen. I also have done accounting work at a museum and have worked with them in figuring out how to generate greater cash flows and such which eventually would mean more public programs during the year for people to go to. It's small accomplishments like that that keep me going in working towards becoming an accountant and it makes me feel good at the end of the day about myself. |

To grimbeaver: that's true how a lot of people nowadays what people studied is not what they work. but having the degree of what you're working for can help you get a job easier.
To lau1c: thanks for that question you gave me to think about. I actually thought about being an accountant partially because of my parents, those typical Chinese parents wanting their children to become a doctor, lawyer, etc. But right now all i know is that i can see myself with a career in the business field because i already have interest in it, but just not to what kind of business. I know how there a tons of titles from office clerk to management to administration. |
