Seven Swords: Hollywood Reporter review

By Andrew Sun

Bottom line: A lengthy kung fu sword epic is too dull to cut it.

HONG KONG -- The parade of Chinese martial arts and swords epics continues with the release of Tsui Hark's comeback venture, "Seven Swords." Unfortunately, the Hong Kong director's work -- so breathtaking and influential in such late-1980s classics as "Once Upon a Time in China," "A Chinese Ghost Story" and "Peking Opera Blues" -- now seems ordinary with this bloated Ching Dynasty actioner.

"Seven Swords" -- set to screen next month at the Toronto International Film Festival -- badly lacks the spark and flourish of past works. For pure wuxia spectacle, there is one classic fight sequence squeezing two wall-scaling swordsmen between a narrow corridor passage. Otherwise, the movie is long and labored. Worse, it thinks it is deeper and more meaningful than it is. Genre fans might enjoy Tsui's whiplash editing, but he doesn't have Zhang Yimou's visual depth or breadth.

Set in the dusty, bleak terrain in West China, the 17th century story has more in common with gunslinging Westerns than silk-and-sword, Imperial court intrigues. A group of murderous bandits is empowered by the emperor (the same ruthless historical ruler as "Hero") to rid the country of rebellious martial-arts practitioners. This edict is used by the bad guys as an excuse to collect as many heads as possible -- including civilians, women and children -- for maximum bounty.

Realizing that a small, innocent village is in the path of these black-clad goth marauders, a group of righteous kung fu champions leaves its snow-capped mountain retreat -- not unlike the camp the new Batman visited -- to save the peasants. Five are disciples of a sword-making master, and two are villagers who are given special blades.

Basically, it is "Seven Samurai" and "The Magnificent Seven" revisited, though Tsui draws directly from the classic wuxia novel "Seven Swordsmen From Mountain Tian." The period piece is mythic in scope but ultimately pulp in essence.

Instead of reveling in a simple story line about Taoist heroes and greedy nasties, Tsui weighs down the picture with cumbersome philosophic themes and overwrought love triangles. Tsui might be a cinema genius -- he did single-handedly craft the continuity-defying cutting in Hong Kong action films -- but he can't steer a narrative in a straight line. He also mistakes brooding characters for deep thoughts.

Even from a popcorn perspective, Tsui misses the mark. The most eye-catching villain is knocked off barely midway through. What's left is a story that gets pulled all over the place. There's a Korean concubine, who is the obsession of the marauding lord; a village girl and her wavering romance with one swordsman; a former executioner-turned-hero; a hidden traitor in the midst; and too many nondescript events that get melodramatic play even though they have little bearing.

Wasted is a potentially star-making turn by Donnie Yen (last seen in "Hero"), who always combines a stoic charisma with ass-kicking kung fu skills. Also, legendary Shaw Brothers-era kung fu artist Lau Kar-leung gets short shrift as the sword group's leader. By the final reel, it becomes clear that the climatic battle is little more a mawkish fight about a girl rather than a monumental struggle for justice in the middle kingdom.

Adapted from renowned writer Liang Yu-Shen timeless classic, SEVEN SWORDS tells the story of seven unlikely heroes gathered together to save a village from the massacre of a general that is seeking a fortune through killing. In the early 1600, the long ruling Ming Dynasty has been overthrown, and the Manchurian invaders from the north have taken over the sovereignty, beginning what is known as the Ching Dynasty, and a highly oppressive reign thus begins. In order to prevent rebels developing revolutionary plots, the newly set-up government immediately imposes a ruthless emergency martial law, ordering all martial art practitioners to turn in their weapons to district officials. Those who fail to do so will be considered committing a serious crime and would result to immediate execution. But soon enough, people would discover that even if they were to obey the law and turn in their weapon, their fate is equally in dire. Wind Fire, a surrendered military official from the previous dynasty, sees this as an opportunity to make a fortune for himself by helping to execute the new law. After endless massacres, Wind Fire next goal is to attack the final frontier, the village of Bowei Fortress.

Fu Qingzhu, a retired executioner from the previous dynasty feels the need to put a stop to this brutality and sets out to save Bowei Fortress. He brings Wu Yuanyin and Han Zhiban from the village with him to Mount Heaven to seek help from Master Shadow-Glow, a hermit who is a master of swords and leads a group of disciples of great swordsmanship. Master Shadow-Glow agrees to help, and orders four of his best disciples to go. Together with Chu Zhaonan, Yang Yunchong, Mulong, and Xin Longzi, SEVEN SWORDS is formed. wow are you serious? 6 episodes and a TV series? have you seen this movie yet? what did you think about it?

This movie hasn't come out yet! Hasn't it? I like the leading actress but i don't like Leon Lai. he is not good at acting. He usually acts boring movies.
Beelui
Oh what a borring movie. Leon Lai is a very bad actor
beaney
I thought this show had great potential to be a good movie. However, I think the director was forced to cut many scenes when editing the show. As a result, some parts seemed very abrupt. For example, when Leon Lai and Charlie yeung first cuddled, it was totally out of the blue.

The sound effects and fighting scenes were pretty good though.
imp01
The action moves in the movie was great and most of the cast were well suited in their roles. Since this is a big hit, there surely will be a sequel.
paulchiu83
I cant wait to see this movie and hope it will be released worldwide. It has the perfect casts in it, and I know it will be just as successful as Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Hero and House of flying Daggers. If it has 6 episodes in it I will be the first one to buy it!!!

im lookin forward to seeing this movie@@ i hope it'll release dvd soon. heard too much about it in the radio to not watch it hehehe

‘Seven Swords,' ‘Luck' kick off Venice Film Festival

By Frances D'Emilio
Associated Press
Published: Wednesday, August 31, 2005 7:48 PM PDT

VENICE, Italy — A stellar American profile, a strong Asian accent and heavy security distinguish this year's Venice Film Festival, which began Wednesday night with a Chinese martial arts extravaganza, Tsui Hark's "Seven Swords," showing out of competition.

Metal detectors were just about everywhere and bomb-searching police divers reportedly were working the waters off the Lido, the beach section of Venice, where the festival was being held. Security concerns about a possible terrorist attack on the gathering of stars and their fans largely resulted in a slimmer version of this year's edition — 56 films instead of the more than 70 in past years.

Always conscious of being outshone by its cinematic cousin, the Cannes Film Festival on the ritzier French Riviera, organizers boasted about an unprecedented nine world premieres of U.S. films on the lineup for the Venice festival.

The film fest ends Sept. 10 with the awarding of the Golden Lion top prize.

Eagerly awaited and considered a top contender for the award is George Clooney's "Good Night, and Good Luck," which screens on today to the public.

No "Ocean's Eleven" caper this time, the black-and-white film that Clooney directed and stars in is a serious look at a painful time a half-century ago in America, when powerful politicians relentlessly tried to root out the "reds" — communist sympathizers.

Clooney plays a bold CBS producer, Fred Friendly, and David Strathairn is Edward A. Murrow, the broadcast pioneer who challenged the crusade of Sen. Joseph McCarthy.

Another U.S. actor on the other side of the camera here is John Turturro, in competition with "Romance and Cigarettes." The work is a musical love triangle featuring Susan Sarandon as the older woman, Kate Winslet and James Gandolfini, best known for his starring role in "The Sopranos."

Other films being touted in Venice include Ron Howard's "Cinderella Man," a boxing movie starring Russell Crowe; and Ang Lee's "Brokeback Mountain," a story about a homosexual relationship between two 20th century American cowboys.

Nineteen movies are competing for the Golden Lion at this year's festival, including Terry Gilliam's "The Brothers Grimm," starring Matt Damon; "Proof," directed by John Madden and starring Gwyneth Paltrow; and "Mary" by Abel Ferrara.

Closing the festival is Peter Ho-Sun Chan's "Perhaps Love," a Hong Kong production.

The festival also attracted demonstrators — a motley, noisy group of about 2,000 people dressed in beach shorts and bikinis who were held at bay by police officers in riot gear. The motive for their protest was not immediately clear.
