I can't wait to see this. Seems like a pretty epic film. Looks like there's gonna be lots of action too. I'm not too big a fan of Leon Lai though.

The plot looks pretty interesting if you read some of the details about the swords and everything on the site. When is this film due to release anyways?
ben_007
Looks really good, but then again - Leon's acting has ruined the last few movies he's been in (IMO). He looks really fake - which remidns you that its a movie and everything else in it is fake as well.
He was alot more natural back in his old TVB days.
But yea, I'm still keen to watch it.

I agree with u..we mostly see leon lai in those modern love and high tech movies.
But tho i think this should be a good movie, because there is Donnie Yen..haha

Yeah I remain skeptical about Leon's acting ability also. But chances are, this isn't the type of movie where he'll have a challenging role to act, so he should be able to do alright just sitting around with one hand on sword sheath and looking cool.

I heard the Seven swords dvd will be 4 hours long, whereas the theatrical release will be 2 or 3 hours long. The first movie is only the first chapter of the Seven Swords book. Tsui Hark has commented about making all seven chapters of the book. Can someone confirm this? Making all seven chapters into a movie seem to be impossible unless Tsui Hark is planning to do it like Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings.

I have not seen Leon star in movie for awhile. Looking forward to watch it.

A very anticipated movie for 2005. Highly budgeted.. should be different to the recent poor HK movies.

Director Tsui Hark.. one of my favorite directors in HK, with movies including the Wong Fei Hung sagas and Blade.

Donnie Yen hasnt had a chance to work with Tsui Hark for quite a few years now.. this should be good.

Saw the trailer for this movie and thought it look like a sci-fi period drama. Settings looks a bit like LOTR though...Probably Tsui Hark got the inspiration from that film...hahaha

woooo i love these kind of flicks, especially the ones filmed at a surreal scene. But I agree with people here...I'm not too interested in see Leon Lai in this flick. I can't say he's a moderate actor let alone a good one.

Internationally acclaimed director, Tsui Hark, announced his new martial arts wuxia epic project, SEVEN SWORDS. Featuring a star-studded cast, SEVEN SWORDS will be shot in various locations in Xinjiang, China.

Produced, directed, and written by Tsui Hark, SEVEN SWORDS is an action-packed wuxia epic about love, betrayal, and heroism. Starring Asia hottest stars, including Leon Lai, actress Charlie Young, Donnie Yen, China actors Sun Hong-Lei and Lu Yi, and actress Kim So Yeon from Korea. With state of the art costume and set designs by Eddie Wong (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), and action direction by acclaimed martial arts choreographer, Lau Kar-Leung (Drunken Master 2).

Adapted from renowned writer Liang Yu-Shen timeless classic, SEVEN SWORDS tells the story of seven unlikely heroes gathered together to save a village from the massacre of a general that is seeking a fortune through killing. In the early 1600, the long ruling Ming Dynasty has been overthrown, and the Manchurian invaders from the north have taken over the sovereignty, beginning what is known as the Ching Dynasty, and a highly oppressive reign thus begins.

In order to prevent rebels developing revolutionary plots, the newly set-up government immediately imposes a ruthless emergency martial law, ordering all martial art practitioners to turn in their weapons to district officials. Those who fail to do so will be considered committing a serious crime and would result to immediate execution. But soon enough, people would discover that even if they were to obey the law and turn in their weapon, their fate is equally in dire.

Wind Fire, a surrendered military official from the previous dynasty, sees this as an opportunity to make a fortune for himself by helping to execute the new law. After endless massacres, Wind Fire next goal is to attack the final frontier, the village of Bowei Fortress.

Fu Qingzhu, a retired executioner from the previous dynasty feels the need to put a stop to this brutality and sets out to save Bowei Fortress. He brings Wu Yuanyin and Han Zhiban from the village with him to Mount Heaven to seek help from Master Shadow-Glow, a hermit who is a master of swords and leads a group of disciples of great swordsmanship. Master Shadow-Glow agrees to help, and orders four of his best disciples to go.

Together with Chu Zhaonan, Yang Yunchong, Mulong, and Xin Longzi, SEVEN SWORDS is formed. Fu Qingzhu takes the lead and they set out to save the people of Bowei Fortress. As they take the entire village leading them to the road of a safer place, they begin to encounter mysterious confusion. Food and water is poisoned, and trails of escape are marked with signs leading the enemy to them. They soon realize that there is an undercover spy amongst them, and SEVEN SWORDS must identify him/her before Wind Fire army gets to them

Principle photography for SEVEN SWORDS begins September 1, 2004, and the entire film will be shot in Urumuqi, Tien Shan, Shanshan, and various locations in Xinjiang, China. The film is set for release in the summer of 2005.

SEVEN SWORDS is produced and directed by Tsui Hark, from the script co-written by Tsui Hark, Cheung Chi-Sing, and Chun Tien-Nan. Executive Producers are Ma Zhong-Jun, Raymond Wong, and Lee Joo-Ick. (hkentreview.com)

woa (looked at the trailer) its good
but in my opinion against matching with LOTR its not.
LOTR has 3 eps long and had a lot of CG effects.
however, the seven swords seem great also. I cant wait to watch it smile.gif
searching
you match wiht LOTR??? i think is very different, cant wait, iv been looking forward to this one for a while! always a fan of Tsui hark
clarkdevlin
surely this can't be compared to lord of the rings for 1 there isn't any elfs, gobbits etc... just pure humans.
seven swords sounds interesting and very tempting to watch. i love the design of the swords they look stunning, hope theres plenty of action and drama.

The movie has been screened and the recenses are not AAA.....
It seems that the expectations were too high.....
Main minor point at first sight is the length of the movie 2.5 hours which is too short!
Looking at the 7 chars/swords and main villains it's understandable.
But there is a original director's uncut version which is 4 hours!
However, I think it's a good movie and will watch it at big screen smile.gif
beforever
i thought the movie was a bit long.
my mom brought me to watch it...
sigh. i don't really like chinese movies based on... 'ancient' times.

i like initial D.
haha. overall though. i would still give this movie a 7/10.

Hi, just heard about this movie. The storyline doesn't sound like its suitable for a movie. Seven swordsman coming together to save a village. Sound like it should be a drama series!

I hope it doesn't drag and each minutes is filled with exciting story, because their website is really bad. The layout is excellent, but the description does not make me want to watch it. (I'm referring to the English version) I found some grammar errors too!

Anyway, I just hope the movie is better than their site.
searching
well they planing to make into series also... plus is based on a good book isnt it??

i think i will like, i like most wu xia movies... so does that make me wrong if i like? no, i just think we all like different things smile.gif
fitterhappier
hope it's good. tsui hark hasn't been making any 'wuxia' movies for a long, long time. kinda wished he's never gone to hollywood in the 1st place.

btw, the weapons all look really cool....
yuenwooping
the theatrical cut is gonna be 2.5 hours, expected a 4 hour director cut for the DVD

According to the news I found on a site, there may be a few more sequels to Seven Swords, maybe like the American movie Lord of the Rings, where there's 3 episodes or sequels.

Here's the news:

Tsui Hark Talks: SEVEN SWORDS Sequels, JOURNEY TO THE WEST and Brigitte Lin Biopic

July 27, 2005

Tsui Hark has talked briefly about what he would do next. He said although up to six sequels to Seven Swords were in planning, he was not so confidence about making all six of them. He said it would be up to how well Seven Swords do in the market. What Tsui Hark really wants to do is to adapt the classic fantasy novel Journey to the West. The major challenge of making it possible is to get the script right and he has been working on it for years.

So if you want to see the six sequels to Seven Swords, I think we should watch it in theatre, and buy the real copy of this movie when it comes out, cause it doesn't really cost a lot, which is surely what I'll do, since I'm in Hong Kong right now, I'm going to see it when it comes out tomorrow. smile.gif
Hope everybody will support this great movie. Thanks.

I cannot wait to see this movie as well. But I was extremely disappointed with Zu a few years back. Hopefully this one will be good. Has anyone actually read the original novels that this is based upon? I am curious to pick up a copy of the novel and its related stories.

watched it already....what can i say, the "poor" editing ruined the film.....overall, average only. actually im quite dissapointed cos it didnt bring the suspense flow of the entire movie. maybe i should wait for the extended/director cut, cos the theatrical cut is really out of tune.

awwww! it's really 4hrs and it was cut to 2.5 hr? no wonder then that the scenes would jump back and forth!

i guess it's not the wuxia kind we're hoping for, but i still want to see it. i'll wait for the full-length 4 hr version too. biggrin.gif

thanks though! the review doesn't look too promising but i'm still giving it the benefit of the doubt.

*Spoilers* Do not continue reading if u r planning too but haven't watch the movie

Movie is bad. a total mess. i didn't know that movie is suppose to be off 4 hours. no wonder many scenes doesn't make sense. editing totally ruin the whole movie...

Firstly, the way they brought to u how each warrior have their own special sword and all. but then they don't really get to show individually how good/speciality of each of the sword other than those of Leon and Charlie. other than the great names to it. it's just another sword.

There's a scene about the emperor finding some ancient sword; but it doesn't explain anything else. and this is a movie about swords? tongue.gif

There's a scene about the horse not willing to leave one of the 'seven' when he try to release the horse to wrong the opposite direction.. (why horse?? should have develop more on the swords)

The bad guys. The lesbian chic. She was made to look damn yau yeng and tar tak. but killed like 1/2 way through the movie. other than the crazy bandit boss, the enemies totally r all sissies. even it's generals.

The korean couple, i really didn't think their love scene would have made any difference to this warrior type movie.

ah many more...
