Hong Kong to Erect Bruce Lee Statue

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong will mark kung-fu movie legend Bruce Lee's 65th birthday in November with a bronze statue, the Bruce Lee Club said Saturday.
Wong Yiu-keung, chairman of the Hong Kong fan club, said it will be the first statue of Bruce Lee in a public place in the world.
The 2-meter image will please fans disappointed that Hong Kong does not have any permanent memorial devoted to Lee, Wong said.
"We should continue to remember him because he had not only contributed to our movie industry, but also raised outsiders' awareness of Hong Kong in general," Wong said.
The fan club has chosen three designs of Lee in his classic poses -- all featuring a bare-torsoed Lee, two including Lee's signature weapon the nunchaku -- and fans are invited to vote for their favorite design on the Internet, Wong said.
The winning design, to be sculpted by Chinese sculptor Cao Chong'en -- whose works include a statue of former Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping -- will be erected at the city's Avenue of Stars, a new harborfront tourist attraction that honors Hong Kong film stars including Jackie Chan and Chow Yun-fat.
The statue, to be unveiled on Lee's 65th birthday on November 27, will also mark Lee's naming earlier this year as "Chinese Film's Bright Star of the Century."
Lee was born in the United States but moved to Hong Kong as a child. Most of his movies were filmed and produced in Hong Kong.
The Bruce Lee Club in Hong Kong has long wanted a Bruce Lee museum, but shortage of funding and the lack of available venues have been obstacles. The statue will cost about $154,460, Wong said.
Lee died in 1973 at 32.

Wow that is expensive! Its cool of them to make him a stutue he did seem to do a lot for their industry... It was like Bruce Lee first then Jackie Chan and Jet Li...

Great news,Bruce Lee is a legend and hero amongt many chinese and i'm sure they'll appreciate this gesture.
They should have done this decades ago. But its never to late for them to reliaze their mistake.

A bruce lee museum would be nice, but too bad lack of funding is keeping it from reality. The thing is, the new generation does not know Bruce Lee well enough. Most young kids may have seen his movies, but have no idea who he really was, or how much fame he has brought to the HK movie industry.
how can i vote online for my favorite design? i've been a fan of bruce lee for the longest time...can't wait to see it when i visit hong kong!

I'm surprised at all the love for Bruce Lee here. I'm no hater, but I feel what he did was not meant to contribute to the image of chinese people or the HK filming industry. He did it simply to make money.
This is just my opinion, but all the documentaries and stuff I've read about Bruce Lee makes him out to be a sort of snot nosed celebrity, with his head in the clouds half the time. I don't know if this is true or not, but I'd make a fine bet that exposing chinese culture/martial arts to western society were not his intentions in the first place.
However, I am thankful for his contributions regardless, as I do feel it has made it simpler for people of Asian descent to immigrate to US and Canada.
This is just my opinion, so...any thoughts?

he opened his martial arts school in the US and accepted people of ALL RACES and ALL COLORS, whites blacks and asians... EVEN under scrutiny from other martial arts masters in the area... they constantly challenged bruce lee to shut down his school, but bruce lee was determined to spread the teachings of martial arts to everyone.
i think u better read up on bruce lee's history before making an accusation like that

you cannot be serious.... bruce lee's goals and intentions WERE to expand chinese martial arts to the world.
btw..back to the topic.. isnt there several statues of bruce lee in Hk already?im really surprised if there isnt cause Bruce Lee is a important figure not only in china but for all of asia.
wow.. i never thought that they would unviel a statue of bruce lee.. Its gonna cost alot.. wouldnt be having a musuem of bruce lee and creating a statue of him be around the same amount of money? O_o

He isnt a good example of a loving man - but no doubt his detmination and skills got him where he is today!!!
He is a role model for his martial arts skill and his conquer of Hollywood - he didnt handle his persoanl life very well. His mysterious death left more question then answers!!!

Bruce Lee is such a legend, he still has fans till this day. But I don't think Hong Kong government will ever use money to have a museum on Bruce Lee, after all, it needs a lot of dedication to start and maintain one.

No matter how people want to remember Bruce Lee, He will always be an international idol for master in kung fu. He really has his name pass on after 32 years . I 'm proud of him.

Deservingly so! Bruce Lee popularize Asian films in America and world wide. His accomplishments with such a short life is amazing. He truly is an icon and deserves to have this honor
i don't know which came first, but there is also a statue of him in bosnia. which was recently vandalized.
