got her chance to play something different in the recently released
Enter the Phoenix, a film directed by her boyfriend Stephen Fung. In

Micachan2002
yes it's a scene of the making of Gen X cops, you are right! smile.gif

Nicholas Tse (Time and Tide) stars as Chiu, the only cop in a department within the Hong Kong Police Department designated "2002" that deals with supernatural occurrences around the city. (Don't ask, I don't know the significance of the title, and the movie never elaborates.) Helping Chiu out is Sam (Sam Lee), Chiu's former partner who was killed by Chiu during a shooting incident, and is now a ghost that helps out on supernatural cases until it's his turn to be re-incarnated. After Sam leaves, Chiu has to seek out a new partner. He finds one in Fung (Stephen Fung), a traffic cop who, like Chiu, can see ghosts walking amongst them. Chiu isn't too sure about Fung and he's reluctant to take on a new partner since he's cursed and all those around him eventually dies (re: Sam).

The duo's first assignment pits them against a Fire Ghost (Anya) who is torching people at rave parties. No sooner is the Fire Ghost dispatched by the paranomral cops does her boyfriend, Water Ghost, appears to take revenge...

2002 is a mishmash of elements from various successful American productions. Chiu and Fung have the natural ability to see ghosts around them (Sixth Sense) and they dress up in black leather as a matter of course (The Matrix), and are equipped with special weapons to take out the naughty ghosts (Men in Black).

2002 plays out like a comedy with spurts of action, and director Wilson Yip uses an extensive amount of wireworks for the action sequences, and has the budget to digitally remove all the wires from the film. In a word, the movie's stunts look very nice. The whole look of 2002 is very slick and actually looks more like a 90-minute trailer for a movie instead of being a movie itself. The actors pose constantly and slow motion is used as if the technique is going out of style. A deep movie 2002 ain't, but it's very nice to look at and has a very good sense of fun.

Nicholas Tse has a very firm grasp on his Chiu character. He knows he's in a movie devoid of any substance and does all the required posing and looks "cool" in his black wardrobe. Stephen Fung seems unsure if his character is supposed to be the comical sidekick or an equal partner to Chiu, and comes across as uneven as a result.

The film's female lead is Danielle Graham, who plays a nurse name Danielle (although the movie doesn't bother to identify her until the very end) who likes Chiu and vice versa, but because of his curse Chiu dodges her at every turn. Besides being a pretty face, I'm hard pressed to understand what Graham is doing in the film. She has very little acting ability and her character feels and looks like an emotionless skeleton walking to and fro -- re: she's stiff and unnatural. (One gets the feeling Danielle Graham is, ahem, a "good friend" of someone powerful and involved in the production.)

The special effects in 2002 are very good. The movie's ghosts fly in bursts of energy and natural elements (the Fire Ghost can turn herself into fire and shoot fireballs, and the Water Ghost can -- what else? -- turn himself into water). Although a long, drawn-out action sequence in a hospital swimming pool must have looked great on paper, but is rather silly in execution.

The film also suffers from quite a few bonehead plotting, but at the risk of spoiling potential viewers the fun of pointing one out, I'll just say that a character dies and another character has no idea he's died, and let's leave it at that.

My Schoolmate, The Barbarian (2001)

Well-off schoolboy Edward (Stephen Fung) is headed towards straight As on his HKCEE (*) results when his ex-girlfriend throws a spanner in the works. When she sets him up for pushing her off a ledge at school, Edward's booted out of school with only a couple of months left before the critical exams. A mix-up sends him off to enroll at TBS Memorial School -- a Band Five school at the bottom of Hong Kong's education barrel.

Students at TBS are so fierce that even the triads dare not recruit in its schoolyard, and Edward's set to have a mighty hard time trying to learn there. Pulped on his first day by resident bully Big Mouth, Edward starts learning the ropes from former school fighting champ Stone (Nicolas Tse) and classmate Phoenix (Joey Yung), who has the hots for him. But as soon as things are looking up for Edward and his new friends, a local gang boss catches wind of the school's wealthy new student and intervenes with kidnapping plans.

The topic of schools assigned to specific levels, or bands, of students is quick paid lip service at the end of My Schoolmate, the Barbarian. But that's hardly the emphasis of the film -- upbeat teamwork laced with Tony Ching Siu-tung's stylish action work catches the most attention. TBS proves a grim urban set with a novel staging area for fights, where contestants duke it out on the desktops under spinning blood-spattered ceiling fans. Dull lighting, fuzzy wide angle shots, grainy film stock and washed out tones add a cheap-and-dirty feel during school scenes and ably pump up the sense of menace when needed. Wong Jing's love of video games also enters the picture, flinging in their influences to charge up some of the most entertaining action work this year.

The entire production is carried in a rough and ready manner, occasionally diverting in classic Wong Jing style to cover odd skits in dreams or parody -- the most timely is a spoof of current TV ratings winner Who Want to be a Millionaire? as a revision aid. Leads Stephen Fung and Nicolas Tse put in distinctive roles and carry their sweaty proceedings nicely up to a cheesy exam hall payoff. Joey Yung's character seems thrown in, along with Missy Hyperb*t*h playing her gal pal Pork Chop, to keep the film from being an hour and a half of boys brawling. Yung doesn't look like she's appearing on account of her acting skills, which are enthusiastic but otherwise remarkably poor.

* HKCEE is roughly equivalent to the GCSE in the UK, Junior Certificate in Australia and perhaps finishing junior high in the US.

Directed by Wong Jing
Starring Stephen Fung, Nicolas Tse, Joey Yung, Samuel Pang Kit-chi, Missy Hyperb*t*h and Ng Chi-hung

(5/26/2004) Jackie Chan's manager Willie Chan Chi Keung two nights ago celebrated his 63rd birthday. Chan joked that he is 35. Jackie Chan's father, Stephen Fung Tak Lun, Karen Morris (Mok Man Wai), Terence Yin (Wan Chi Wai), Solon So, Chan Chi Shun, and Mr. and Mrs. Ken Low Wai Kwong were among the attendees.

A magazine accused Fung Tak Lun of soliciting a female escort at a night club in Thailand. "The magazine has a habit of making stuff up, but the pictures are mostly our group pictures. I feel like someone has sold me out. The Thai girl whose photo they published, I have never seen her. I normally would go to those places to talk business, what's the big deal? I definitely won't get escorts." Mok Man Wai said, "Last time we went to Thailand for ENTER THE PHOENIX (DAI LO OI MEI LAI), we went to that club, what's the big deal?"

News from 14th June 2004

Today there is news about Stephen's second directed movie, since the
result of his first movie was good, so his second directed movie will
probably start during August, Gillian ( a member of Twins) will
probably be taking the main role in it, Stephen said that after
watching the movie "The twins effect2" he found out that Gillian did
a great job in her action scenes, and since this movie is about a
family who is very keen in actions, so actors would probably be
someone who can do action scenes...Aside from this, Jackie had also
recently learned some magic tricks from Stephen, he said that Jackie
was very clever, he can learn it fast, he had also recorded Jackie
doing magic and prepare to include it into his second magic VCD...

Enter the Phoenix (2004)

On hearing that Stephen Fung is directing a movie, my mind was just on one thing –curious of whether he is capable. However upon reading all the news about the new movie, it did not sound promising. But after watching Fung’s Enter the Phoenix, I have a totally different perspective. His direction is not only adequate but is without doubt the most promising young director from Hong Kong in the past 5 years. Directing a movie starring his friends – Eason Chan, Daniel Wu, Karen Mok and special cameo appearances from Jackie Chan, Sammi Cheng and Nick Tse and also starring himself in a cool and bottled up emotions role. SO far so good, and as from his friends they all say he has a good ego, unlike Stephen Chow’s bad ego. The most has gay themes, but that’s not the point as the main premises is not so much about the plot, but the way the movie provides a good and cool fun ride.

The story goes like this Georgie (Daniel Wu) is the son of the triad's head, but he is being exiled because he carries a big secret. When his father is dead, he is back to Hong Kong. His roommate, Sam (Eason Chan), sees Georgie as his idol. He is mistaken by the triad members, and made him to the new head of the team. From Sam, Georgie knows the hardship of being a triad's head. Sam falls in love with Julie (Karen Mok). On their wedding night, Julie shows her love to Georgie...Stephen Fung's directorial debut "Enter The Phoenix" grossed over $10 million at the Hong Kong box office in 16-days' opening. The director/ actor Stephen revives classic Mafia topics with shades of black humor while tempering contentiousness of homosexuality with the love of father-and-son.

Sounds gay right, well it is. However, Stephen Fung does not go over the top to the extent of some Wong Jing theme, but mixes it with gangsters. And the most surprising and refreshing of all is the traditional HK style fight scene. The fight scene is what I really want to comment about the main reason that makes this film not just any comedy about gangster and gays. This fight scene surprising did not involve Jackie Chan or Yuen Biao who both gave cameo appearances, but between Daniel Wu who I hear is a martial artist or has somewhat learn martial arts before against the cool and controlled Stephen Fung. Though using wires, the fight can actually be seen unlike the nowadays Gen X Cops style fight or even Jet Li and Jackie’s Hollywood action flicks with fast editing and MTV style. The fight was great to watch and reminds us of the Heyday of HK cinema but it was still far to short which left me somewhat cheated and wanting more.

As to the acting, Stephen Fung puts in a highlighting performance. Though a small role, he is one of the best young actors that I feel can go to the league of Tony Leung and Andy Lau in the upcoming years when they retire. His fights are convincing and has this unique on screen presence that standout out of the movie. Daniel Wu puts in another average performance, but you can really tell he is trying to act from his wooden frame. He will improve, but there is still this sens eof wooden feel in his acting. Eason Chan continues to impresses in comedy mode but his acting range is hardly tested here and seems to be overshadowed by Karen Mok. Mok does well in her role and looks kind of better than normally. As to Chapman To, he is either a genius or just someone filling up spaces for laughs or sad jokes. I still reckon Chapman To can act, as seen in Colour of Truth where he was funny but not annoyingly funny. His chemistry with Law Kar Ling as father and son is perfect as they play off each other perfectly which reminds me of Jet Li and Siao Fong Fong in Fong Sai Yuk.

Overall Enter the Phoenix is the not the best movie about gangster but it is a very funny and entertaining ride. The obvious homage or parody as you wants to call it to A Better Tomorrow is fun but as it keeps repeating it gets a bit repetitive. It must be noted that if only HK film fights scene like this one but longer, then HK cinemas is coming back. However, whatever the case is, Stephen Fung is a promising director and a rising star in HK and Enter the Phoenix does nothing more than that. Enter the Phoenix earns slightly higher marks than normal comedies because it attempts to draw a message and Fung also uses the show not tell principle in some scenes very well. Well Stephen, can’t wait to see your next direction!

I rate it 8.5/10

Enter the Phoenix

From left to right: Chapman To, Karen Mok, Eason Chan, Daniel Wu, Stephen Fung and Law Kar-Ying.
Year: 2004
Director: Stephen Fung Tak-Lun
Producer: Willie Chan, Solon So, Jackie Chan
Writer: Stephen Fung Tak-Lun, Lo Yiu-Fai
Action: Ma Yuk-Sing
Cast: Daniel Wu, Eason Chan Yik-Shun, Karen Mok Man-Wai, Chapman To Man-Chat, Law Kar-Ying, Stephen Fung Tak-Lun, Yuen Biao, Chan Wai-Man, Hayama Go, Lee Kin-Yan, Glen Chin, Lee Lik-Chee, Nicholas Tse Ting-Fung, Sammi Cheng Sau-Man, Sam Lee Chan-Sam, Tin Kai-Man, Maggie Lau Si-Wai, Koey Wong Ka-Man
The Skinny: Stephen Fung's first feature shows that he might have a decent future as a director of entertaining commercial fare. While not an outstanding film, the fun popstars, genial performances, and good sense of humor make Enter the Phoenix decent fun. The film does lose its way towards the end, and the climactic action sequences are somewhat muddled. However, for director Stephen Fung, this is a good beginning.
Review
by Kozo: The ballyhooed feature directorial debut of actor Stephen Fung, Enter the Phoenix is possessing of all the hallmarks of easy-to-please commercial cinema. It's got a multitude of popular current stars, piles of nifty name cameos, bursts of HK-style action, jokes up the wazoo, and not an ounce of pretension. It also has a title which has NOTHING to do with the film itself, and instead seems to be a cloying reference to the arrival of some awesome action filmmaking force (like 1998's Enter the Eagles, or perhaps 1978's Enter the Fat Dragon). However, what Enter the Phoenix does have is a remarkably sound comedy script—which recalls Korea's popular gangster comedy genre—and a sense of humor which works more often than it doesn't. Add all that together and you have a marketing package dream that—gasp—succeeds more often than it fails. Enter the Phoenix isn't outstanding cinema, but it gets the job done in a surprisingly entertaining fashion.
Top Hong Kong triad leader Hung (Yuen Biao) is deathly ill, so he sends trusted lieutenant 8th Master (Law Kar-Ying) to go find his son Georgie (Daniel Wu), who's living in Thailand. Hung intends for Georgie to serve as Big Brother to the Triad, but there's just one wrinkle: Georgie is gay. Luckily 8th Master and son Kin (Chapman To) are well aware of this unpopular factoid—they offer to keep Georgie's secret safe in exchange for his travel to Hong Kong. Unfortunately, they get the wrong guy: they mistake Georgie's roommate Sam (Eason Chan) for Georgie, and offer him Big Brother status, which happens to be Sam's biggest dream EVER. To fulfill his adolescent desire to lord over triad types, Sam begs Georgie to pull an identity switch, which Georgie first objects to. However, when Hung kicks the bucket, Georgie pretends to be Sam and heads to Hong Kong to attend his father's funeral.
In Hong Kong, things get dicier. Apparently, there was some bad history between Hung and triad rival/brother Fai (Chan Wai-Man, the official "triad boss" actor). A long time ago, the two were at odds over the death of one of their comrades. The conflict was resolved, but not without a price: the dead man left a bitter young son, who's grown into the intense Chow (Stephen Fung), who's now Fai's right-hand enforcer. Chow apparently hasn't forgiven Hung for his father's demise, and is all-too-ready to transfer the blame onto Georgie—or Sam, who he thinks is Georgie. Meanwhile, everyone thinks Georgie is straight, a ruse which isn't that hard to keep up since Sam (who's playing Georgie) is straight. The sexual identity shenanigans get even weirder when Fai's daughter Julie (Karen Mok) enters the picture. Fai looks upon Julie as a potential marital offering to Georgie, who everyone believes to be straight, which he is, but 8th Master and Kin believe otherwise. Julie, however, has her eye on Sam, who openly says he's gay, except he's really Georgie. Got it?
Probably not. The wacky sitcom setup of Enter the Phoenix is difficult to put into words because it involves so much mistaken identity and double deceptions, but onscreen it's easy and even enjoyable to follow. This is largely due to the actors, who—aside from all being pals of director Stephen Fung—bring self-deprecating charm and good comic timing to the table. Daniel Wu, in particular, is likable and charming as the gay kung-fu artist who doesn't really want to be a triad leader. Eason Chan chimes in with his usual bouts of overacting, but his antics are largely consistent with the character. Chan thankfully varies his performance such that he's a likable, dopey comic lead. Karen Mok oozes sexy-cute comic charm as the nominal female, and Chapman To and Law Kar-Ying provide terrific support. Those looking for a film starring popular current idols/popstars will be happy with Enter the Phoenix. And for those who like old-time actors, there's the presence of Yuen Biao, which is a big deal because Yuen Biao rarely appears in anything released theatrically anymore.
Further helping things is the script by Stephen Fung and Lo Yiu-Fai, which is loaded with screenwriting shortcuts, but manages to entertain nonetheless. The film mines typical triad themes of righteousness and honor, and throws in stuff about friendship (Georgie and Sam vow to be the best of pals), parental duty (Fai neglects the needs of his loving daughter Julie), and tolerance of those who are different (Gay people can make fine triad leaders). Thankfully, most of the above syrupy subplots are handled with minimum sappiness and maximum charm by the performers. Fung was wise to put so much on his cast of pals, because they bring a fun chemistry and wit to the proceedings that the usual Wong Jing band of misfits usually doesn't. Not that the actors can always cover for Fung's manufactured piecemeal storyline. The abundance of subplots and character relationships sometimes slows the film to a crawl, and indeed the film seems to limp towards its final action finale. However, this is largely fun stuff.
If there are any real debits to Enter the Phoenix, they would be the sometimes muddled action (which is sometimes darkly lit and poorly edited), and the performance of Stephen Fung, who oozes schoolboy menace as bad guy Chow. Fung has usually been better in roles which emphasize his shallowness (think Bishonen), or play up his cartoony machismo (i.e., the Gen-X Cops series). Enter the Phoenix is largely a cartoony film, so his glowering bad guy routine suffices, but he's as convincingly intense as a ninth grader in detention. Still, as a director, he comes through nicely, and displays a handle on pacing and storytelling that shows definite promise. As a calling card for future commercial cinema director Stephen Fung, Enter the Phoenix is good stuff, especially if he can continue to coerce his pals into appearing. Aside from the main cast, Fung gets fun cameos out of Sam Lee, Sammi Cheng, and most especially Nicholas Tse, in a hilarious turn as a too-tough triad dude who gets his comeuppance. All told, this is fun, likable, throwaway stuff that won't win awards, but should charm the popstar chasers who constitute the majority of HK Cinema's current fanbase. You know who are. (Kozo 2004)

Following the movie Enter the Phoenix, Stephen Fung will be embarking on a new movie in September called ?¸•??˘‰Ć (Martial Arts Family). He has invited the Hollywood famous Corey Yuen as action choreographer.

Corey watched Enter the Phoenix and enjoyed it and would like to cooperate with Stephen. Even though Corey does not come cheap, Stephen thought it would be worth it. The budget for the movie is HK$40 million (around US$5.12 million).

In the cast would be Stephen himself, Twins, Daniel Wu, and Anthony Wong. Asked why Karen Mok was not in it, he said because he couldn't find a suitable part for her. (Is it because he loves her so much he didn't want her to be hurt in an action film?) Stephen said, "And you think I don't love Daniel?"

Stephen was attending a watch promotional event and he was awarded a diamond watch. Stephen said that he was pretty rough with watches and might scratch it up so he would keep it as a collection. Asked if he collects the endorsement products of Karen's, he said, "I don't want to talk about it. You don't think I should collect shampoo and sanitary napkins, do you?"

The LOCMAN watch for Stephen costs HK$46,000.

Man Wai showed her support. She praised her brother's artistic talent. "He has drawn well since he was little. I can't draw anything no matter how hard I try. Hopefully his animation can break out of Asia." Currently busy with her ad campaigns, Man Wai was asked whether she will work on Stephen Fung Tak Lun's new film. She said, "I definitely won't be the lead. I still have to release a disk. Maybe I will guest star but that still depends on the character."

Fung Tak Lun's second film as a director, HOUSE OF FURY (JING MO GA TING), has been scheduled for an Easter release. Last year his first film ENTER THE PHOENIX was also released on Easter and had decent box office. Thus this time he again chose this beneficial slot in hopes of even better box office. Fung Tak Lun earlier was in Thailand working on the post production for HOUSE. Luckily he returned before the earthquake.

Stephen Fung Tak-Lun was born on August 9, 1974 in Hong Kong. His mother was a famous Shaw Brothers actress, Julie Sek Yin. Partially raised in the United States, Stephen made his acting debut in Forbidden Nights (1990), playing the childhood version of the male lead. Stephen went to the University of Michigan where he earned his degree in graphic design. In the mid-90s, he returned to Hong Kong where he would form the band "Dry" with Mark Lui. He would continue his acting career in Hong Kong, with successful films like "Gen-X Cops" and its sequel "Gen-Y Cops". In 1999, Stephen released his solo album, "Not Enough Love". In 2004, Stephen made his directorial debut with Enter the Phoenix.

Stephen news =]

[Oriental Daily]

Avid magician Stephen Fung Tak Lun yesterday was invited to judge a magic contest. After directing two films Fung Tak Lun was interested in making a movie about magic. Earlier Pang Ho Cheung had a script about magic and asked him to direct, but now he is preparing another script so he believed that he would not accept the offer for now. Recently he has also released a magic video with the proceeds going to the South Asian tsunami victims. Now it has raised HK$100,000. The press suggested that he could donate the sum to UNICEF, one of the ambassador of which was Karen Morris (Mok Man Wai); He felt the suggestion was decent.

HOUSE OF FURY (JING MO GA TING) has over 2 million at the box office after a few days in release. Fung Tak Lun was satisfied and believed a celebration would be held at the end of the month. On the night of the premiere, Anthony Wong Chau Sun was upset that he did not have a seat and left. Stephen said that he has apologized to Chau Sun on behalf of the public relation company because a viewer took Chau Sun's seat. Even Raymond Chow Man Wai had to watch it at another cinema.

[Oriental Daily]

HOUSE OF FURY (JING MO GA TING), Stephen Fung Tak Lun's second film as a director, has already passed HK$6 million after a week at the box office. The film company two nights ago held a celebration at a hot pot casserole restaurant. Aside from Anthony Wong Chau Sun, other cast members including Twins, Daniel Wu (Ng Yin Cho), Josie Ho Chiu Yi, Wu Ma and action director Yuen Woo Ping attended. Ho Chiu Yi presented a mystery gift and the film company prepared a giant sponge cake for the occasion.

Fung Tak Lun said that this time he will not take the cast and crew on vacation but still promise to take them to dinner. After the promotion of HOUSE is completed, he will have to prepare for his September action film production. No casting has been confirmed yet, but he definitely will not perform. Because directing and acting in HOUSE were truly exhausting, he would only consider whether he would act as well is the character is right. As for girlfriend Karen Morris (Mok Man Wai), Fung Tak Lun said that if the character is right he would ask her. What about Wong Chau Sun who has been rumored to have a dispute with him during production? He said, "If the role is right I will. (You still dare?) I am not scared, he even told people to congratulate me." Fung Tak Lun was glad to hear that girlfriend Karen has praised this film to be more exciting than the last.

With two successes under his belt, will he retire behind the camera to direct full time? Fung Tak Lun expressed that for now he would not. He admitted that people are still offering him roles, but since he will be directing he does not want to divert his attention to other jobs. He felt that directing and acting were different. He could not work on other jobs while directing.

(8/21/2005) The i-Cable invested film SAI JIU is in production now in
Hengdian. Earlier a prayer ceremony and press conference was held.
Attending cast member included Stephen Fung Tak Lun, Gillian Chung Yun
Tung, Cheung Sai, Wong Yat Fei, Boy'z member Steven Cheung Chi Hung and
Mainland actor Kau Lap Yi. Over 50 members of Mainland and Hong Kong
media covered the event.

Fung Tak Lun has been working on the film for more than a week.
Due to the hot temperature he has slimmed down a lot. Because everyday
the shoot goes on for 17 hours he has not had the time for entertainment
except for basketball, video games and going online. In the film he has
a daughter. The reporters asked the child actor to kiss Fung Tak Lun. At
first she was reluctant but after learning that she would be in the
papers when she did, she immediately kissed him.

Wong Yat Fei years ago was rumored to be at odds with Stephen
Chow Sing Chi after working together on SHAOLIN SOCCER. He honestly said
that Sing Jai used to often yell loudly at people on the set. He too has
suffered Sing Jai's wrath, but they absolutely are not at odds. Now
through the crew he learned that Sing Jai is no longer as stubborn as he
used to be. As a friend he was happy for him.

Steven this time took over the role for Patrick Tang Kin Won. He
expressed that the role was very important because he was the matchmaker
for Fung Tak Lun and Ah Gil. In real life he also constantly matches up
his friends. Cheung Sai at first has been not too used to her first
film. She recalled that in one scene she had to make three different
expressions with her eyes alone. Luckily she was able to.

In the film Ah Gil in order to save Fung Tak Lun fell and lost
consciousness. Thus she had very few action scenes. However in one
scene she still had to take a beating from Raymond Wong Ho Yin. She has
already asked him to watch his hand and believed that he would.
