I think the factor that caused ATV to lose to TVB the most is their directors and story-lines. Artists is another factor, but not as important as the directors and story-lines.

ATV has too much talk comparing to TVB and they use unknown or unpopular stars. Most of them are boring... Also, ATV is based on affection. The best series on affection was "Flaming Brothers", so they want to make better series to get the reward.
This is what I think.

One thing that TVB is better than ATV is that the TVB series usually doesn't drag as long as ATV ones. ATV series usually drags the plot of a particular series too long and it is mostly quite boring. The actors/actresses in TVB are more attractive and better

TVB is much more well-known; doesn't it sort of have a monopoly in HK? Maybe their actors are paid more?? =P I find that ATV actors aren't that good, and their picture quality, as someone before mentioned, pales in comparison to TVB's =P

i think TVB has better quaility of pictures and better plots for the series. as for the casts, the casts are more known than ATV

Casting, and the quality of their productions. Their casting sucks. And maybe its because they have less funding, the quality of their productions is not as good as tvb's production. Some of their stories are good, but just their filming quality is having problems. I guess their only solution to catch up with tvb is to put more effort in building up better quality productions.

I don't get why people are saying that sth is wrong with picture quality of atv series
Did they even watch their recent series like central affairs? There's nothing wrong with the picture quality or camera angle, it was shot in a very modern way.
And the pace of central affairs was quite fast
Atv doesn't film so many series in a year so the few series they make, they are all high budget series so why are they saying that they don't put enough money in their series?
A lot of small productions of tvb don't even have that budget...
It's true that ATV doesn't have so many stars and u usually see them in every serie (like pinky cheung) but they only film a couple series in a year so it's quite normal u see them in a couple series in a year... the actors have to make a living....
And it's also true that have a lot of old actor/actresses, but those are all veteran actors and they can really act well (example the actress that played amy's kwok mother in no turning back, omg her crying scenes were so good).
ATV does also hire a lot of per-series actors/actresses (like michelle yip, patrick tam, amy kwok) but that's because of their business startegy, they don't have that many managed actors like tvb.
And actors/actresses like patrick tam and amy kwok, they can act very well, even a lot better than a lot of actors/actresses from tvb.
I recently watched some show on atv (talkshow with actors/actresses that are from atv or ever worked for atv) and u can really see how close they are. They all say that the company is like a big family and that even when the company was losing money, they still got a raise.
I mean atv is famous for their high wages, they are losing money every year but still can affor to pay their actors more than tvb, no idea how they do it....

to me....even tho ATV had a whole list of skillful actors and actresses who were well known as those leaving TVB......but those are mainly older people
in terms of new actors/actresses, ATV dun really market and PR for them as extensively as TVB would do for their new actors/actresses.....i.e. exposing them in community functions, getting actors/actresses into singing and movies once a while......and actually, ATV shows aren't always produced by them, the ones i have seen are usually ones bought from mainland and taiwan containing non-ATV actors/actresses.......which kinda further lessen the exposure....
besides...ATV kinda have a bad reputation to produce pornstars (especially some from miss asia winners).......and they had a lot of shows containing major violence and non-children-friendly themes like gambling........

QUOTE (NetDragonC @ Aug 16 2005 10 53 AM)

I thought "Dangerous Encounter" was quite good, even though a majority of the actors are unknown. But it's been a long time since I've seen a crime series where the personalities of the villains are such deeply described. In some of the stories, I nearly felt pity for some of the bad guys hehe, like the story about that "sik mo" guy who killed girls off the street. The viewers kind of get the picture of why he's getting mentally unstabile.
But I have to say most of the actors are not too talented, ugly too if I must say. So maybe that's a reason why ATV loses to TVB?
A very simple answer to this is...........the casts. ATV doesn't produce the storyline as good as TVB, I have watched a few series from ATV, of course TVB do always come first. I guess I have always been a fan of TVB, haa haa being bias.

actually ATV sometimes has some very good stories to depict. and its good to break away from the TVB stuff time to time.
But i dunno if any of you have noticed, ATV's sets are pretty poorly lit a lot, and their speedmen are horrible when holding the mic in place.
several occasions i have seen the boom come into the shot, and they dont seem to care that its happened.

ATV series are long and draggy. They also have too many unnecessary conflict and their pace is so slow. TVB is more straight forward and faster pace and they don't make relationships too complicated that the audience will lose interest.Like one series I saw, the female lead was in love with guy #1, but was married to guy #2, but was raped by guy #3, and later had a kid with guy #4. Complicated I can't keep up. I also don't like series with infidelity and adultery and ATV have a lot of series like that.

Actually, I don't think ATV lose out in terms of 'talent based acting'.
While ATV's actors might not be the typical eye candy, I believe they have some good talent crops. Take Susan Tse...I actually believe her acting in Rosy Business outshines Michelle in MR! I never thought that was possible but she pulled through her character really well. I think I'm more scared of her than Michelle! Very convincing acting.

I think ATV is lacking in backstage talents such as good scriptwriters, cinematographers, and voice dubbers (for mandarin dubbed shows)
tvb have attractive actors

I personally think ATV made some good dramas a longggg time agooo and they were even better than TVB series. NOW their series suckk badly.. I'm thinking its because they use some actor that are not popular and the money the company provides is not enough to make everything look as smooth as tvb dramas look

ATV needs to improve their filming technique. In addition, the storylines need to tighten up. However, some of their ideas are refreshing...like My Date with a Vampire. However...it is not consistent. Sigh
TVB needs new ideas...most of their ideas are recycled therefore predictable. That is why series like Last One Standing and Rosy Business receive viewers' interest. Also, great actresses and actors are always available.

it's a different feel of directing and story telling
generally plots to most of any dramas are similar but it's how you portray them
some ppl like it, most are so used to tvb it has become the norm
but yeah, the love of atv using mandarin speaking actors means dubbing.. which i think is annoying

I guess why ATV always loses to TVB I don't think because they do not have any skillfull actors and actresses. I watched one of the ATV series before 美丽传说 sorry don't know the english name for it actually I think it is quite good. I find out that ATV's stage background in terms of the colour it is very dark not sure if this is to do with their lighting. ATV also lack in promoting their series as well compare to TVB, their promotion is far better than them.

ATV loses to TVB simply because they cannot promote their actors/actresses enough....and production isn't as high as TVB. But acting-wise, I personally love ATV actors/actresses more than TVBs. Back before 2005, ATV had very good series such as "Heroine of the Yangs," "Cross Border Daddy", "Central Affairs," and "Secret Battle of the Majesties." At one point back then, I watched more ATV series than TVB.
I really admire their stars such as Annie Man, Gilbert Lam, Erica Choi, Joey Meng because they are refreshing to see onscreen *and* they can act very well. ATV seems like a big "family" compared to TVB. They are a smaller production, with fewer crew, and everyone seems very close to one another.
I don't understand why HK can't have TWO very good TV stations. Why let TVB monopolize everything? Some of their series are good but lately, I find myself turning to Kdramas and Jdramas for better series. It's just too bad that ATV has gone downhill over the years. They were once a good contender against TVB. Their scripts were exciting and refreshing to see. I miss those "good old days."
TVB is most populair than ATV
