TV Drama "Spring Waltz" Sold in 8 Countries



KBS TV's Monday-Tuesday miniseries "Spring Waltz" directed by Yun Seok-ho has been sold in eight countries before it airs in Korea. This drama is the last installment of Yun's "four-season drama series."

In a press interview held on the afternoon of Feb. 20, Park In-taek, president of Yoons Color, the production agency of "Spring Waltz," said, "We have signed export contracts with eight regions, such as Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines. We are also conducting negotiations with the United States, Austria, China, Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar."

Park also said, "Holding the full copyrights, the production agency is in charge of the domestic and overseas sales of 'Spring Waltz.' Earnings from the copyright will be shared with KBS. We have already secured the production costs, amounting to nearly 5 billion won, through pre-sales of the drama."

"Spring Waltz" starring Han Hyo-joo, Suh Do-young, Daniel Henney and Lee So-youn will air starting from Mar. 6.

Actor Learning Korean On-the-Fly

Actor Daniel Henney is different compared to his "My Name is Kim Sam-soon" days. His shyness has disappeared and he has a calm, dandy aura. "Spring Waltz", which will air for the first time on March 6, is the conclusion of the series including "Autumn in my Heart"; "Winter Sonata"; and "Summer Scent", all directed by producer Yoon Seok-ho.

"Spring Waltz" is a love story involving four men and women set amidst Austria's natural beauty and a Korean spring.

"I'm playing pianist Yoon Jae-ha's (Seo Do-yeong) global manager, Philip. This time I play a mixed son of an Austrian father and a Korean mother. Philip's superb appearance and manner, his excellent sense of humor, his great educational background, his love of music… doesn't that sound like me?" Henney laughs.

But the look in his eyes communicated the anxiety he is experiencing from his belief that this drama will determine whether people will consider him a serious actor or not.

"Kim Sam-soon's Henry appears without a childhood, but Philip experiences difficulty with his parents from a young age and grows up scarred. Because he is a character with a past, 'internal' acting is necessary".

Of particular interest are his lines in Korean. If his mastery of the Korean language is lacking, he could receive his first attacks from the public.

"In the first part of the drama, because the character grew up in a foreign country, his speaking is limited to phrases like, "it's cool", and "that's strange". This is lower than my level of Korean. I can understand about 60 percent of everyday Korean language conversation. But my Korean lines become longer as the drama unfolds, and longer phrases are still difficult for me. When I'm speaking in Korean, it is sometimes difficult for me to become absorbed in my acting".

In order to become better accustomed to Korean conversation, he says he listens to music and sings along with Yoon Do-hyeon's "Love 2", the band Deli Spice's "Chawoo chawoo", and Lee Seung-cheol's "Hee-ya", which are some of his favorites. He also watches producer Yoon Seok-ho's "Autumn in my Heart", and "Winter Sonata", saying that he learns elegant emotional acting and subtlety from them.

Yoon has admitted that Philip's character did not exist in the beginning. This means the role was created for Henney. Will he be able to adapt to the role? That is his task for 2006.

I need to see the the shows that eveyone is talking about! I did not know that Michigan held at any point in time such a good looking man. I am glad he left this state (Michigan is my home state), to live a better life. Growing up in a small town (farming or not) can really hold a person back. I am glad it didn't stop him.

Daniel Henney, currently appearing in director Yun Seok-ho's final installment of his four seasons of love "Spring Waltz," says of all the beautiful Korean actresses he has worked with, he would most like to work with Jeon Ji-hyun again. It can have been no easy decision given that others have included Lee Hyo-lee, Kim Tae-hee and Jung Ryeo-won. 　

Henney's first opportunity to work with the superstar came in a commercial for Olympus. "The concept of the commercial wasn't that simple, but she was extremely focused on her work, and very professional," Henney told the Chosun Ilbo's sister publication Sports Chosun. "And I thought that if we could just act together one more time, that it would be really great."

It's not that he scoffs at the others. He also has praise for Kim Tae-hee, with whom he shot a commercial for LG Telecom. "Kim's English is very good," says the half-American actor. "She always smiles and is easy-going and funny.”

Henny has just completed yet another commercial, for the cosmetics company biotherm, which brought him together with K-pop star and all-round idol Lee Hyo-lee. "I liked her because she's a girl-next-door type who I feel comfortable to approach and talk to," he reveals. "She has these little creases around eyes when she smiles that are so pretty, and she seems to be able to charm people around her and make everyone feel good." Jung Ryeo-won, who was a partner in the hit drama "My name is Kim Sam-soon" that took him to stardom, has become a close friend. He says the two talk on the phone constantly and are just like old high school buddies.

And now "Spring Waltz" has paired him with Han Hyo-joo. "I'm truly lucky to be able to work with her," he says. "She doesn't keep anything hidden, and she's an open-minded person." The drama is the last of a series after "The Scent of Summer," "Autumn Fairy Tale" and of course "Winter Sonata."

Henny usually plays roles where he is faithfully devoted to just one woman in TV soap operas, is that what he is really like? "Until I am able to meet someone who's my type, I guess I'll keep being kind of a playboy, but once I find my style I think I could be a devoted man.” he says.

And what would the heartthrob's type be? He goes for women who are confident, talkative and smile a lot. "I'd like to try dating a Korean girl," he says, showing a dazzling smile of his own.

Stalking Keanu

DANIEL Henney (who plays Henry in GMA7's current Korean hit My Name is Kim Sam Soon) has a new project in the works. He and actress Uhm Jung Hwa are the leads in the new movie Hitting on Keanu, a romcom (romance-comedy) adapted from a popular Internet novel. The story is about a woman who falls in love with a man who resembles Hollywood movie star Keanu Reeves. Henney essays the role of a top manager of a foreign company assigned to Korea who is mistaken for Reeves by Uhm, an employee in the same company.

According to scuttlebutt, the producers tried to get Reeves' approval to use his full name in the title (the Internet novel is entitled Hitting on Keanu Reeves) but the Hollywood superstar's management company did not agree. Filming is scheduled to begin in May. Henney, a Korean-American who did not speak a word of Korean when he starred in MNIKSS, is currently seen in the drama Spring Waltz.

Actor Daniel Henney, who is of mixed heritage, has worked as a "messenger of hallyu culture."

Currently acting in KBS TV 2's drama entitled "Spring Waltz," Henney gave an interview to journalists from major American news organizations, such as a CNN anchor and reporters from The Washington Post and The Seattle Times, who visited a filming location of the drama on Apr. 1. For about two hours in fluent English, he introduced how he began working as an actor and the general trend of Korean soap operas, as well as "Spring Waltz."

Touching on why Korean TV dramas have contributed to advancing the hallyu boom overseas, Henney said, "Korean TV dramas are successful. For example, a 20-odd-episode drama features a story with a tight plot. They are mostly filmed outdoors, rather than at studios, with the focus on a universal theme of love."

He said, "I was lucky, because the Korean people held a prejudice against people of mixed blood when I arrived in Seoul to work. Previously, Korean TV used to place cultural restrictions on violent or kissing scenes. But I found Korean TV expanded its cultural boundaries after the issue of mixed heritage was handled in the latest drama entitled 'My Name is Kim Sam-soon,' in which I acted."

Meanwhile, Henney visited a public steam sauna to film a scene for "Spring Waltz" on Mar. 29. Despite his unfamiliarity with the steam sauna, he acted opposite actress Han Hyo-joo at the steam sauna in impressive fashion, peeling hard boiled eggs, drinking iced sweet rice punch, and receiving a massage using cucumbers. Asked by director Yun Suk-ho to go into a hot steam bath, Henney hesitated for a few seconds. But he had the courage to go into the bath shortly, finishing the scene without a hitch.

OH Man this is so funny to me! I like to search Daniel on different Forums cause I knew him from a Fashion Show I did with him in Chicago. DROOL! I got to see him in his boxers for 3 days in a row and help him put on clothes I see someone already put up a couple of my pictures from BJ junkyard. I met him my Junior year in College so that was about......... WOW 4 years ago.

Actor Suh Do-young has been under treatment at a hospital after he took injuries to his facial bones during the filming of the KBS TV2's Monday-Tuesday miniseries "Spring Waltz."

On the early morning of Apr 11, Suh (playing Jae-ha in the drama) acted opposite actor Daniel Henney (playing Philip) in a love triangle situation involving actress Han Hyo-ju (playing Eun-young). In an action scene, Henney accidently hit Suh in the face with a clenched fist in a moment of "complete disharmony" between the two actors during the filming. As a result, Suh suffered a sunken cheekbone.

The accident occurred despite previous rehearsals. The production of "Spring Waltz" has therefore hit a snag in the aftermath of Suh's sudden hospitalization. A total of 12 episodes had been broadcast until April 11. The next episodes are expected to focus on a melodramatic love story between Suh and Han. The episodes will make a dramatic turn as Suh recognizes that Han was the girl whom he had met in Cheongsando during his childhood.

In an emergency conference, the production team reportedly discussed how to proceed with its schedule. The team has decided that it would be difficult to go ahead with the filming without Suh because of his heavy role in the drama. An official from Suh's agency said, "No decision has been reached yet as to whether to continue the filming of the drama without Suh Do-young. As he received injuries to the face, it will be a long time before he completely recovers. But we will know for sure only after his doctor gives a diagnosis."

"Spring Waltz" had suffered from low viewer ratings, contrary to earlier expectations. The production team is reportedly quite anxious over the lead actor of the drama being in the hospital.”

Same here! I live more towards Flint, but it is about an hour and a half or so straight across M-57 for me...if I only knew lol....

I think I read somewhere that once he graduated from HS in Michigan he either started modeling or went to college in Chicago. I am not sure which order that goes in though if he started modeling or college first.

Yeah, he went to Carson City-Crystal High School. I think he was the "star" basketball player of the school too! I'm pretty sure he went to college first, then modeling. He supposedly got discovered when he was in the parking lot waiting for a friend at a modeling agency.

..at least i think that's how the story goes..lol
