As if one wasn't enough, a second "Brad Pitt" with brown eyes and jet black hair has appeared without notice, luring viewers every Monday and Tuesday nights through the MBC primetime drama "Sweet Spy."
Not only does this "new" heartthrob have everything of the original, he is younger, taller and broader.
For the 24-year-old Korean-American actor Dennis Joseph O'Neil, better known to viewers as Dennis O, his "predecessor" Daniel Henney's overwhelming popularity was both a chance and a risk.
As a Korean actor carrying an exotic aura of the West, Henney, 26, had immediately grabbed the hearts of female viewers of the popular TV series "My Lovely Sam-soon" - "My Name is Kim Sam-soon", which ended in July.
Although Henney's successful start of an acting career broadened the chance for O'Neil to make his way through the Korean TV land - now familiar with these Korean-American Adonises - it also meant that he had to exceed Henney in some way to prove that he wasn't a mere "copycat." O'Neil seemed to have known from start that it would take twice as much effort for him to earn as much popularity and approval as Henney with people often comparing the two actors.
"Don't compare me with Henney. My goal is not to follow someone else's footsteps to earn popularity," he said in a recent interview with a monthly magazine. "People are bound to compare me with Henney since we come from similar backgrounds. But watch and see. In a few years, he and I will have become so different that no one will remember the times when we were compared to each other."
Apart from both being Korean-American actors quickly becoming the rising stars of Korean TV screens, O'Neil and Henney have a lot in common.
The two actors were both born of an American father and a Korean mother.
Despite the heavy stammers when they speak Korean, audiences immediately felt attached to these brown-eyed actors who claimed to love Kimchi from their mothers' homeland.
The two actors seem to have grown up feeling their mothers' homeland Korea as a close country to them. O'Neil once said in an interview that being able to eat Korean food everyday was what made him the happiest about starting an acting career in Korea.
Due to the language barrier and the risk of audience indifference, O'Neil and Henney started off their careers by first appearing on TV commercials. As audiences' curiosity grew larger, they then moved on to TV dramas, aiming to broaden their territories to acting.
In "My Lovely Sam-soon" - "My Name is Kim Sam-soon", Henney played the role of a Korean-American doctor who has a heart of gold to match his striking looks.
In the drama the doctor, who barely knew a few words of Korean, came to Korea not only to look after his love who was suffering from an illness, but also with hopes of seeing his mother's homeland for the very first time.
O'Neil's role in "Sweet Spy," on the other hand, is kept pretty much in the shadows until the sixth episode, which aired Tuesday. But as the handsome millionaire later falls in love with the heroine, he is to play an important part as the story unfolds.
The public's interest in O'Neil so far, is not due to his qualities as a good actor, but rather to his appealing mask. Because the actor does not have any Korean lines in the drama, speaking only in fluent English, it is hard for Korean viewers to evaluate his acting skills - which may even be beneficial for O'Neil under the circumstances.
But as seen in past cases of "pretty" celebrities who quickly disappeared after gaining an overwhelming popularity for a short while, good looks and temporary public interest do not let the actor hold fame through the end.
True, the boom for the Korean-American actors is going strong, and appears to have staying power.
But difficult tasks lie ahead for O'Neil - and also Henney - in becoming "permanent" stars in the Korean TV land. To pin their names down firmly, these actors must first overcome the language barrier to broaden acting territories and come up with a special tool to match the capricious tastes of today's TV audiences.

The prevalence of multi-ethnic stars is one of the dominant phenomena of this year’s entertainment field. In the spotlight are Daniel Henney, Dennis O and Kim Deanna. Born to Korean mothers and American fathers, they have risen to stardom in a short time with their clean-cut and exotic looks reflecting both the East and the West.
This summer, Daniel Henney rose to national heartthrob by starring as an angel-hearted Korean-American doctor in a mega-hit drama series ``My Lovely Sam-soon’’ which ended in July.
Following in Henney’s footsteps is Dennis O, who is starring as a mysterious millionaire in a popular drama series ``Sweet Spy.’’ Before debuting as TV actors, both were already famous models in advertising and fashion. Born and raised in the United States, their English lines in the dramas accompany Korean subtitles.
Kim Deanna, who gained great popularity through the SBS TV program ``Animal Farm,’’ which showed her at her family’s reptile farm, recently made her debut as a member of the hip-hop duo Azian Love, by teaming up with a super model Kang So-young. By making the most of their images as a super model and an exotic mixed-race star, the group is aiming at becoming a big name not only Korea but throughout Asia.
Experts say that the success of mixed-race entertainers means that Koreans have become much more open to multi-ethnic entertainers than before.
A few years ago, there was a male duo with one member being Korean-American of mixed heritage. But they failed to become popular since until that time, people’s prejudice against entertainers of mixed heritage was strong.
``However, Korean viewers’ attitudes have changed. They seem to have become more friendly to half-Korean entertainers these days,’’ said an official from an entertainment agency who claimed anonymity. ``Even if people’s frenzy over mixed-race entertainers turns out to be only a temporary thing, the fact that people have given such support to them is something meaningful,’’ he said.
However, some point out that such enthusiasm towards half-Korean entertainers has not yet extended to most of the multi-ethnic people living in Korea.
``Their popularity does not necessarily mean that Korean people’s general attitudes towards mixed-race people have improved,’’ said Lee Ji-young, a social worker from Pearl S. Buck International (PSBI) in Seoul. The PSBI foundation was established by Nobel laureate Pearl S. Buck to
assist children, such as mixed-blooded children and adoptees, suffering racial discrimination.
Lee said that while fans are thrilled with the new phenomenon of mixed-race stars, the reality of most of mixed-blooded people in Korea is not that bright. She said that many of them still face harsh discrimination.
She also said that the role of such stars in encouraging mixed-race children and increasing people’s awareness towards mixed-race people who suffer from discrimination is very much important.
In fact, Daniel Henney and Kim Deanna have been participating in activities of the foundation, including joining summer camps with half-Korean children, spending time with the children and giving speeches to them. The foundation invited them as they were idolized by the children. ``What stars say is much more powerful and influential than what I say to children,’’ Lee said.
Kim Deanna said that through her group’s new hip-hop ballad song ``You are born to be loved,’’ she hopes to help Korean people fully embrace mixed-race people.
``In my case, I was born in the United States and spent my childhood there. Thus I did not face much conflict regarding the matter of being mixed-race. However, after I came to Korea, there were several occasions in which I was somewhat stressed by people’s prejudice against mixed-race people,’’ she said.
Lee said that whether the popularity of half-Korean stars is another form of favoring white people or a result of people’s change in attitude towards mixed-race people remains to be seen.
``As this is such a new phenomenon, we will have to see and wait what this will ultimately come about,’’ she said.

Wow, Daniel is such a gorgeous guy!! I am hooked to him after watching "MNIKSM". Can't wait for his new movie - "Spring Waltz". Hopefully, it's a happy ending for him though. Heard that he's is only playing as a "cupid" for the leading actor and actress.

(And he's so Hott, I believe he shall rule the world quite easily.)
I bet he'd be quickly (especially if he can act well xP) noticed in Hollywood...ppl here sure do love asian peeps nowadays it seems

I love to see him in MNIKSS and for sure he looks so compatible with Jung Ryu Won (They look really good together in the CF as well). I wanna see both of them play again together as a couple in another series..

I saw Daniel in Kim Sam Soon and I think he's really good looking. He looks like a mixture of Daniel Wu and Edison Chan, except he looks better than the two of them. The only thing I don't like about Henney is his voice. It's not manly enough.

I liked him in Kim Sam Soon too, first time I saw him, his english is really good. Acting, not so bad, but he it was better that he wasnt the lead actor.
