Do YOU guys think Family Guy is a rip off of the Simpsons? And Explain why you think so or not

Well not really....
Family guy uses a different humor style than the Simpsons. A lotta random flash backs and more sexual inneuendo (okay cant spell that). The Simpsons mostly relies on characters and them doing what makes them unique (like sideshow bob trying to kill bart).
And the animation style is different also. For some reason Family Guy looks more clear to me than the Simpsons which seem a bit fuzzy.
That said I think the old Simpsons are funnier than Family Guy. But the new Simpson just try too hard or use old jokes too often. So I tend o like Family Guy more.
BUT... Sienfeld still RULES OVER THEM ALL!!!

family guy has the same type of humor as the simpsons, but has a more adultish theme to it and pushing it farther than what the simpsons are able produce and therefore makes if funnier.

Lately Simpsons is getting really lame. It used to have a "deeper" message while today it's more all over the place with their humor yet trying to have a serious theme. But the Family Guy, it's not supposed to make sense, it's just a bunch of hilarioius random stuff put together, which makes it so great.

I don't think Family Guy is a rip off of Simpsons. Their plots are different and they have different characters. Family Guy is way more mature too.

i am fans of both the shows .. family guy in my opinion is aLot better tho, like it keeps getting better and better, whereas after like 17 seasons simpsons is definetly drying out, the storylines are getting crappier and crappier.

absolutely no way...family guy is in no way a rip of the simpsons...simpsons has a more light-hearted approach to issues and topics and family guy take it above and beyond and that is what distinguishes it from other shows...just like american dad, which is another creation by seth mcfarlane...both really good shows...family guy has a dark humor to it that just makes it so much better to watch...in a way it almost says things that many people really want to say but are afraid to admit to wanting to say it...
...btw...the Stewie DVD comes out on Tuesday so for anyone who likes the show...go out and get it!

It is no ripoff, it is just some other adult cartoon. I like them both to be honest. I don't see a dog talking in the simpsons or a baby. Stewi rulez!

Family Guy is NOT a ripoff, you don't know what is it about in the show that makes you think Family Guy rippoff of Simpsons.

Other than them being a family of 5. Father, mother, big brother, middle sister, and toddler there's really not much else in common.
I prefer Family Guy as well, like everyone said Simpsons is getting kinda old. But I hate Meg.

I've been watching Simpsons for a long time.. and when I started watching Family Guy, I didn't think it was a rip-off of Simpsons.. the two are targeted for different audiences..
Simpsons has a very very broad audience.. where even kids can watch it without supervision.. it's regular humor, nothing too violent or nothing too sexual..
Family Guy is targeted towards (older) teenagers and adults.. lots of funny sexual jokes and lots of jokes making fun of politics or celebrities..
and i agree with you.. the old Simpsons were really funny and well-written.. the new Simpsons are kinda stupid sometimes

whereas Family Guy.. hehehe i look forward to watching it every week! Stewie rules!

I think they're similar but in a way i just find them different. There's more of a sexual content in Family Guy. I feel that in Simpsons that's more family feeling in it. I personally enjoy watching the Simpsons more and find it more entertaining.

Not at all. I am a huge fan of Family Guy. I think Seth MacFarlane has done a very good job in making the show. I can still laugh like an idiot even though I have watch all the episodes a million times. I particularly like the flashback styles because it often leads to totally absurd but extremely funny stuff. For example,
In one of the episodes they were talking about Chris being a man, then Peter flashes back on the day he became a man: He was on the operating theatre, and the surgeon said, 'Congratulations Peter, you're now a man.'
As for the simpsons, I find it quite boring at times and the jokes arent that funny. Worst of all, all the characters look so ugly!

buh the story is WAAAY different, FG is funnier IMO but that started to go downhill after season 3

Family Guy is rather too random for my taste. The Simpsons is much more coherent in comparison to Family Guy, and the "guest appearances" are rather entertaining. From my comments, the fact that I prefer The Simpsons over Family Guy should be pretty obvious now (and yet I still state the obvious).

I think it's getting better and better. Season 1 is a bit lame, but it gets better after that. I especially like season 5, i think they have some of the funniest episodes there like 'perfect castaway', 'jungle love' and 'fat guy strangler'

I'm more of a Simpsons lover, it's one of my favorite shows...while I don't really like Family Guy.

Well, the fact that the father is un-intelligent, clueless, lazy and always doing stupid things is very similar to Homer's character, and the mother is very similar to Marge in the sense that they are both the backbone of the family; they are both very responsible and keeps the family together...so there's also some similarities between the characteristics of the characters in both shows.
Despite the similarities, there are also some differences also, they're not "entirely" the same...and I have noticed that Family Guy does seem to target older audiences mainly, while the Simpsons attract general audiences from all ages.

Hmmm... maybe a little. But I reckon it's a lot more crude than Simpsons... ahaha. I mean seriously, I find Family Guy pretty offensive at times, but I think that adds to how funny it is. And it IS for older audiences, with the rating and everything. I can't forget how the Milkshake scene with Peter cracked the hell out of me!

They have taken ideas from the Simpson but they've managed to stand on their own. I believe South Park will always be better than both, actually.

No way.
The humor in FG is nothing like the humor in Simpson's.
Simpsons is more .. realistic? And the meaning behind each episode is mature.
Family Guy's just random and lame and unrealistic, yet it successfully entertains me~
I guess some people could see it as a "rip off" cos of the whole family structure thing?
Like, the father always goes out to drink and cause trouble for the family.
The wife is always the responsible one who looks after the kids.
Other than that, there's nothing else similar about the two shows.

Family Guy deals with more taboo issues in a very direct manner that not many people will like and goes against the PC attitude of everything. I love it!
So although based on The Simpsons each character is just a little bit more messed up so to say in Family Guy.

ALYN, have I told you lately how much I love you?! I swear I find myself agreeing with all your statements in this forum!
Anyway, Southpark is definitely the best, but Family Guy definitely isn't a rip off. Like many have stated, the humor is really different and I've always though Family Guy was better. But the Simpson's humor is more subtle and I appreciate that. Something about Family Guy's random humor always gets me though!

Well...FG have taken some jokes from the Simpsons before but I would not say it's a rip off...not like American Dad is a rip off of FG anyways~
But Simpsons is definitely better! Well, old Simpsons is better than most things and while New Simpsons are a lot worse, it is a lot better than new FG. In fact, I think the newest Simpsons are an improving which is not what I can say about FG.
Family Guy is missing a heart.

Family Guy, although the same type of show, is not a rip-off from The Simpsons. In terms of style, they are very different IMO.
Most of Family Guy's humour is very reliant on the use of cut scenes, something that The Simpsons does not really base their show on. Many of these cutscenes in Family Guy do require the audience to have some knowledge to what they are referencing (otherwise it wouldn't be funny to the viewer). Sometimes it refers to shows and events that happened quite a bit back that many people today might not know of. When Simpsons reference something outside the show, it's typically something in today's popular culture and hence more viewers can understand it in comparison to Family Guy's references. Also as many people have noted already Family Guy is more adult-oriented, pushing the envelope further at times, doing some pretty darn controversial (sometimes a bit too much I say...). The Simpsons sometimes try being controversial but nowhere near as the level of Family Guy.
Family Guy and The Simpsons are pretty different. FG uses a lot of flashbacks and is mostly supposed to be viewed by adults. The Simpsons, however, can be viewed by younger ages/teenagers with a lesser impulse of controversial content.

in my opinion, not quite so...I actually think Family Guy bares more similarities with The Simpsons than Futurama does...although Futurama and The Simpsons were created by the same creator, but there's a lot of differences between these 2 shows...the whole concepts, and structure of these shows are very different...the only similarities between these 2 are the characteristics of some of its characters...for example, the character of 'Fry' in Futurama bares some similarities to Homer based on personality, they're both very un-intelligent, clueless, lazy and thick-headed, and always doing stupid things...while the character of 'Leela' (I think that's how you spell her name) bares some similarities with Marge in the sense that they're both responsible and quite intelligent, and in a sense, being surrounded by "insane" characters (more so with Leela), they are probably the most 'sanest' among their own bunches...and that's about it really...although another similarity is that they both occupies the same kind of humor as each other, and attracts the same age groups. They're both among my fav shows.
But with Simpsons and Family Guy, there's more replications; the concept, the structure with the family, the personalities of some of its characters...there's a lot of similarities in those areas...the differences between these 2 are more in the humor...like others have pointed out...Family Guy possesses more vulgarity and goes by more controversial issues using humor which are considered inappropriate for certain age groups, which is why they are mainly targeted for maturer audiences. And the way they handle these issues are more complex, it makes you think, makes you wonder about these issues. And of course yes, Family Guy does have a lot more insanity and is more ludicrous than Simpsons is.
The Simpsons on the other hand, uses humor which has more simplicity, dealing with more random issues we face everyday, it's more mild, the sort which would attract audiences of any ages...it's the type of show which doesn't require much thought, and many would regard it as just a mere "comedy fix", something to watch when you want to kick your shoes off and relax and have a good laugh, this is why the show attracts much broader audiences.
As for American Dad...well, I only watched 2 episodes of it EVER and gave up...why? Because the very first response I had with it was it immediately reminded me of Family Guy, I saw too much replications...then again, these 2 shows are created by the same creator after all...perhaps the creator should take some pointers from Matt Groening (the creator of Simpsons & Futurama) and create another animated show that's more different to his previous show, and not just a basic 'carbon copy'.

Well, if you break it down by characters, one can see similarities:
Dumb fat dad, naggy wife, a daughter, son and baby...
But the humour is actually very different. Simpsons tries to follow some sort of coherent story and laws of physics while Family Guy does not (which adds to the humour).
I think Simpsons is starting to incorporate some of the random humour from Family Guy as well...
