i know this is off the topic but what does mando rap be rated as??? like the thing that jay does...
MonkeyKing
I'm inclined to believe that everyone that says Canto-rap sounds terrible, horrible, etc. does not actually speak or understand the language.

Seriously, some Canto verses out there are like freaking poetry.

i think H.K rap has its own place in the music industry of hong kong..but its not very mainstream but there are groups like LMF n i think they're great rappers...songs like edison n jordon are more pop version of rap..making it more mainstream easier for the main audience to accept

Rap isn't very centered in HK because most of the idol singers in HK tend to sing more ballads or dance pop.

HK rap is just OK. It's not as good as people say it, nor as bad. I too think it's the language that makes HK rap sound awkward.

But what I like about HK rap is that it doesn't talk about sex, drugs, violence, etc... well at least the professional rappers don't sing those stuff, which they do a lot in America, seriously.

But when it comes to the lyrics, HK rap uses much more slang compared to English, considering that in colloquial Cantonese slang is a big part of the language.

I like Mandarin rap more. It just seems to flow better... I just like Mandarin music overall, lol.

Yeah, Edison Chen is a joke, seriously. He sounds horrible even without rapping.
jonijoni
Canto is just hard to flow with in the rap genre cause the way the words are pronounced. Mandarin is easier to rap with b/c it flows much more.
tinybubbles
i think canto rap sounds weird and funny although i rather listen to mandarin rap
loongloong
Edison's good, but he needs featuring from others to perfect the songs...
And m-flo whom I think the master of rapping in jap collaborated with Edison in 1 of his song...
At least it prooves there are people who admire his rapping skills (not only girls)
Btw mandarin sounds nicer because we're more use to it..

Are you kidding me? Jin's lyrics are trivial at best. The lyrics are weak and his beats are mediocre. I've heard demos from underground groups better than Jin's attempt.

Edison may seem like a joke, but I admire his ambition and goal - to make hip-hop mainstream. How many HK artists out there do you see leaving their company (EEG) and creating their own (CMD)?

yeah..canto rap sounds really funny. it just doesn't flow as well as Mandarin does. there are very rare instances of good sounding canto rap songs.

however, i'm not sure if anyone's heard of FAMA though. they are sorta like a new generation of SoftHard in Hong Kong. again, the rapping is a bit weird, but they make attempts to bring forth a new sound.

this is one of their MV's, not really rap or Hip Hop, but still pretty catchy

hello everyone,

I've got some Cantonese rap songs and please have a listen. I was born in HK and now living in UK. I wrote the lyrics and I make the beats as well. Please feel free to let me know what you think, hope you guys will like it. Thank you very much!

whoever classified Edison as a rapper should probably think twice...he can barely speak canto right! (sorry I know some of you edison fans will kill me) Not that I have a thing against him singing cause I used to listen to him before he started his "crap-rap" but after that I lost interest in his music..the only good song that he rapped in was probably that one with the members of LMF about HK.

Other then that I think HK rap is a different approach to their traditional whiny music. Once in awhile I like to get away from songs about breaking up and mopping on it. I LOVE mp4 and LMF don't know why they disbanded though =( the newer ones are FAMA and twentyfour mei (yah-say-mei)

I cant take a hk artist seriously when rapping when they wear their tight pants and scrarf over their neck saying yo yo yo. LMF did make a breakthrough in HK rap because they didnt do the usual mc hammer vanllia ice type rap that others would do.

i like hk rap..like jay etcetc..it's amazing..lol..i jus love hk rap..i listen to it like everyday on my music player and i've never got bored of it, even though if it's old or new song..=)
xDddaniel
haha HK rap is always seemed weird to me since the Americans usually rap like eminem

hey what about the crop of new HK rappers rapping in english?? Anyone check for those type of artists? there's a bunch of them coming up and they are quite good.

And what about Chinese rappers from the states? or rappers from China?? it's really growing...
MonkeyKing
I'll admit, I don't really look into HK rappers that rap in English or Chinese rappers from the states, the only one I know of is Jin. I've been looking into Mainland rappers, but I'm surprised they were mentioned. It seems like most people equate Mandarin rap to Jay Chou or Leehom, which is really disappointing. Mainland and Taiwan have some legit rappers. The Mainland scene is really alive, much more than in HK, but I can't say I appreciate it as much as HK rap because I don't understand Mandarin all that well. There are some groups and solo artists from Guangzhou that rap in Cantonese like DumDue and Uranu$ does a verse or two in Cantonese.

HK hip-hop is making some progression. We've got MC Yan's Yellow Peril, sanGfan, Justice League (who has an awesome freestyler), FAMA, 24Herbs (which has former LMF members Kit and Phat) and Jin has just been signed by Universal. MC Yan has always been consistently good with his works and Yellow Peril (Chef, Double T, ADV) are promising. Sangfan's got a raw, hardcore sound that I like. Justice League's MastaMic amazes me with his freestyling. Some people say FAMA have sold out, but they've simply found their niche in the HK market.

From reading this topic, people don't know about HK's rap scene - they just make conclusions based on the mainstreamed stuff they've heard like (mainly) Edison or comment on how it sounds weird or doesn't flow, they don't bother to actually look into the scene or completely ignore the lyrics. There's a level of Cantonese comprehension you need to have to appreciate it.
