Maggie Q talks ‘M:i:III’

IPB Image
Maggie Q: 'There's nothing that I could see or have experienced while being around Tom (Cruise) that has been negative.'

The Hong Kong–based American actress talks about auditioning for her role in M:i:III; working with superstar Tom Cruise and director J.J. Abrams; playing the only woman on the IMF team as well as her future plans.

CS: How did you hear about the role? Was it an open casting call that your agent found for you?
Maggie Q: Well, initially, I sent a tape to them and then didn't hear back for weeks, so I thought it was over. I thought that was it. Oh, well, it doesn't really matter. And then weeks later, after traveling all over Europe, I get back to Hong Kong one day and they're like "We need you in L.A. tonight." I was like, "Oh My God!" so I had to fly over, within hours of getting the call, and I went in for my audition, and they had me do three scenes, and they were like, "Welcome to the film!"

CS: And how's it been working with Tom? I assume you do a lot of scenes with him since you're on his team.
Maggie Q: Oh, definitely. Yeah, yeah. He's the greatest! I think a lot of the misconceptions about Tom is that whenever I see things or read anything about Tom that's not positive, the only thing I can think of is that they just don't know him. There's nothing that I could see or have experienced while being around Tom that has been negative. He's a really great guy, and he's a generous person to work with, and you couldn't ask for a better co-star. You really couldn't. He treats everyone as his equal, and I appreciate that a lot, because we're lucky to be there.

CS: Any idea what you're going to do next once you're done promoting the movie?
Maggie Q: Well, that's a good question. There's a few things on the table right now that I have not really committed to yet, but a few really fun things that I'm actually really excited about. But once that happens, I will definitely talk about it the minute I can.

Maggie Q talks to media about injuries she had while filming the latest “Die Hard” film

Maggie Quigley's hands cut while filming car stunts in latest `Die Hard' film

SINGAPORE (AP) -- Hong Kong-based actress and martial artist Maggie Quigley said Friday that her hands were badly cut while filming car stunt scenes for the coming film "Die Hard 4.0."

"Because of all the car stunts and because the car was completely mangled ... I was slicing my hands completely," Quigley, better known as Maggie Q, said at a Singapore news conference. "And there was a point where I had a Band-Aid on every single inch of my hand."

"But that was about it. I was very cared for on this film. I'm so lucky," Quigley quickly added.

The latest installment in the "Die Hard" series, titled "Live Free or Die Hard" in the U.S., revolves around a planned cyber-terror attack on the United States.

In the film, Bruce Willis teams up with Justin Long, who plays a computer hacker, to thwart the evil Mai - played by Quigley.

Audiences will get to see Quigley beat Willis up.

"It was slightly terrifying to hurt him in any way," Quigley said of Willis. "Not that I have the power to hurt him, but you know, accidents and what not."

The movie opens in Japan on June 23. It opens in the U.S. and elsewhere on June 27.

Quigley made her name in the Hong Kong film industry before moving on to Hollywood projects such as the recent action flick "Mission: Impossible III," the comedy "Rush Hour 2" and Jackie Chan's "Around the World in 80 Days."

The actress grew up in Hawaii, the daughter of a Polish-Irish American father and a Vietnamese mother.

Maggie Q: Good Hollywood roles rare for Asians
Friday October 17, 2008 Hong Kong
Credit: AP

HONG KONG (AP) — Despite landing roles alongside Tom Cruise and Bruce Willis, Maggie Q says Asian actors still have a hard time getting good roles in Hollywood movies.

The 29-year-old actress, whose full name is Maggie Quigley, told The Associated Press in an interview Tuesday that 90 percent of the scripts she receives are written for Caucasian female characters.

"The first part of it is going into a room (for an audition) and trying to quell this stigma that people have about Asians only doing certain kinds of roles and Asians only being looked at a certain way," Quigley said. "You run into these stereotypes a lot."

She was speaking after a press conference in Hong Kong to promote the video game "Need for Speed Undercover," which features a character she portrayed.

Maggie Q: Good Hollywood Roles Rare for Asians

Despite landing roles alongside Tom Cruise and Bruce Willis, Maggie Q says Asian actors still have a hard time getting good roles in Hollywood movies.

Quigley said American filmmakers are confused by her biracial background. Born in Hawaii to an American father of Polish-Irish descent and a Vietnamese mother, the actress first made her name in the Hong Kong film industry.

"They think, 'Wow, what is this? There's this girl. She's Asian, but she's not. ... They're really not sure where to put me," Quigley said.

She described competing for roles in Hollywood as a "battle."

"It's a struggle. You got to win roles. You really got to fight for them. When I left Asia and went to the U.S., essentially I was starting over. It's very hard. It's a lot of work," she said.

Quigley's credits include "Mission: Impossible III," starring Tom Cruise, and the fourth installment in the "Die Hard" series, "Live Free or Die Hard," starring Bruce Willis. She also appeared in "Deception" alongside Ewan McGregor, Hugh Jackman and Michelle Williams.

Quigley is currently shooting Chinese director Tian Zhuangzhuang's "The Warrior and the Wolf," which is about the friendship between two generals in ancient China traveling near the Silk Road.

In one of them she's wearing nothing but lettuce! Maggie is apparently a longtime vegetarian, who went made the switch in diet because of the horrific conditions on factory farms where animals are raised for food. Who knew!

Who's the Hottest Young Asian American Actress?

Who is the hottest young Asian American actress?

Just to make thing's more challenging, we'll focus only on Asian American actresses under age 30.
I've assembled here a list of some names and photos to help you. Feel free to make your own picks or suggest more actresses that I might have overlooked in the comments section below.

So that nobody gets confused, we'll leave Asian-born stars like Bai Ling , Gong Li , Ziyi Zhang , Maggie Cheung , Michelle Yeoh and Isabella Leong off the list.

Although top veteran actresses like Sandra Oh, Lucy Liu, Kelly Hu, Tia Carrere, Michelle Krusiek, Grace Park, Linda Park, Ming Na, Joan Chen, and Yunjin Kim are still successfully working in Hollywood movies and on television, we're going to leave them off this list as well.

Instead, we'll take a closer look at some of the new faces that are among the hottest young Asian American actresses working in Hollywood today.

MAGGIE Q

Born as Maggie Denise Quigley to a Polish-Irish American father and a Vietnamese mother, she was raised in Hawaii.

She pursued modeling careers in Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, before beginning her film career.

The multi-ethnic actress has since appeared in "Mission Impossible III," "Live Free, Die Hard," and co-starred in the ping pong comedy "Balls of Fury."

Although she just turned 30 in May, the actress continues to book high-profile roles. She will next appear in the Zach Galifianakis movie "Rogue's Gallery" and the martial arts flick "King of Fighters" based on the video game.

I made an exception to include Maggie Q here even though she just turned 30. I've also included the multi-ethnic Aoki and Kreuk.

MAGGIE Q PRE-HOLLYWOOD INTERVIEW (PART 1) - ACTIONQUEENS.COM

Before gaining her fame in Hollywood with US blocksusters like “Mission: Impossible III” (2006) and “Die Hard 4.0” (2007), Maggie Q was already a star in Hong Kong, where she played in several movies since 2000, including Ching Siu-tung’s “exploit-action” movie “Naked Weapon” (2002). The following interview was made in Hong Kong in 2004 at the Drop, a club owned by Colette Koo, producer of “Taped” (photo below), a short erotic drama directed by Antony Szeto (“Wushu”) that Maggie Q shot the year before ...
