Very sad. I was fighting back tears every episodes and usually i dont get very emotional when watching dramas, but this one is truly touching. To see a young girl succumb to an illness down.gif Really changes your outlook on things.

I definitely recommend this one. Its one of those series that you watch and then cant stop thinking about weeks after.

Synopsis from Jdorama.com

Based on a true story

This story is about a girl named Aya who suffered from an incurable disease, but lived life to the fullest until her death at 25. The original story is based on the diary Aya kept writing until she could no longer hold a pen. The book that later followed entitled “One Liter of Tears" has sold over 1.1 million copies.

Aya's only wish was “to live." By carefully depicting Aya's earnest desire to live, and the love of her family, friends, and lover, the drama, “One Liter of Tears" wishes to deliver her simple but strong message: “Just being alive is such a lovely and wonderful thing."

Episode One

The drama starts right before Aya is hit with the tragic illness, called Spinocerebellar Degeneration, in which the nerve cells of areas necessary for the human body to move and balance - including the cerebellum, brain stem, and spinal cord - transforms and eventually disappears.

15-year old Aya Ikeuchi is the eldest daughter of a typical Japanese family. She lives with her cheerful and reliable mother, Shioka, father Mizuo, owner of a tofu shop, younger sisters Ako and Rika, and younger brother Hiroki.

On the day of her high school entrance exam, Aya is full of energy as she leaves the house. But she falls asleep on the bus and misses her stop. She gets off the bus and starts running in the rain, slips and falls, injuring her knee. That's when she meets Haruto Aso, who was planning to skip the exam. He gives her a ride on his bicycle to school where the exam will be given. Aya is allowed to take the exam in the school nurse's office, and manages to pass.

When the new semester begins, Aya is elected class rep. and joins the basketball team. On the boys team is someone she has eyes for, which adds to the things she has to look forward to.

Amidst her happy days at school, Aya begins to experience physical difficulties. She often drops food from her chopsticks while eating, can't pour water into a cup without spilling it, and occasionally wobbles while she walks. Aya's mother Shioka, a former nurse, is the only person that realizes these changes.

One day, Aya is about to leave home as usual. When she starts to run, she trips over her own feet and falls. She couldn't protect herself with her arms while falling, causing her to land on her face - making her bleed heavily. This injury soon reveals the existence of Aya's fateful disease.

I have watched the first episode and thought it was pretty good and sad to watch since Aya's mum find out Aya have fateful disease and hard for Aya's mum to tell Aya and her husband. I think it would be very hard for Aya to accept the truth that she have fateful disease and couldn't be with someone she like. I am looking forward to watch the next few episodes.

not seen a japanese movie in ages..in fact i have yet to watch "crying out in the centre of love" and "to be with you" both of which i got on DVD.

this is one of my sees too - a diary of tears. dunno why but i like watching weepies now and again when u want to cry. BTw i also watch comedies, romantic comedies, action and just not weepies.
Does anyone know if there is a place where this movie is available with english / traditional chinese subs?

thanks

Birdboy
To be honest, I actually intended to watch the show just for the female lead Erika Sawajiri biggrin.gif

However, the story is actually quite good and yes, I almost cried and I'm a guy. I'm still on episode 3 though.

WOWOOWOWOOW............ This Japanese serie "1 Litre of Tears/ A Diary of Tears" is a great drama!!!!!!!!!! It is very touching !!!!!!!!!!! I love it!!!!! Is there a Cantonese dubbed version??????
sfyau2004
It was a torture trying to hold back tears throughout the entire show (esp when you're not watching alone)!! I must say its refreshing after loads of K drama with teary-eyed leads!!
luv4evaluv
hahaha dis is one sad drama ne....my frd was so good she didnt cry at all....
wun
i just finished watching this series. it was a really good drama. i liked it since you can learn from aya's experience. it was so sad to me. i had to hold back tears most of the time. i just loved the family's chemistry in there. it made the drama 10x more depressing. i recommend everyone to watch it.
Birdboy
Wtf man.. I didn't know the real girl is dead. However, I really admire her courage.

Anyway, does anyone have the March 9 song in the show? I'm looking for it.

Oh btw, I cried. Finally. There were many episodes which made tears come up to my eyes but I only consider myself as crying only if the tears drop and episode 6 and 8 made me cry. Especially episode 8, I couldn't stop crying while watching episode 8.

I'm still at episode 8 though.

arh.i'm a liL scared to woch this

i think i'll cry too muCh.~
matsujun's girl
OMG ds is one of my fave dramas! i cried in almost all the episodes. it was just so heart-wretching. i liked this better than crying out love. and i fell in love w/ Ryo while watching it. he was so good as haruto.
T.c
I love this show. It's very sad and touching, the way they talk about the life of this girl. Aya was very patient through the whole ordeal of her sickness, and I really admire her for that. And the ending song is very well sang, by Kei, one of my fave artist. Everytime they end the show with a quote, it makes you so sad. If I would give a rating, it would be 10/10.
Birdboy
I just finished watching the show. It's great. A very good show. Probably the best Japanese show I have seen so far.

Episode 10 and 11 made me cry too. Especially 11. This show is really good. Everyone should watch it.

Btw, I wish to add that another point of the show which makes it so sad is that she could actually have it all (excel in basketball, become successful in love, enjoy high school life to the fullest) but just because of this disease, she lost all of them.
tvbfanzforever
i watched chapter 2..it must of been tough for aya's mum to take all this in..meaning for now..she's the only one to know about her daughter's illness in her family. My heart nearly fell out when i saw the scene when that little girl's dad (with whom aya played ball with on hospital grounds) came out in his wheelchair happy.gif'
chinwsy
It is such a touching, sad but nice drama.
From the drama, we get to learn something !!
It's a "Must Watch Japanese Drama in 2005"
tvbfanzforever
just watched chapter 3..and the tears are starting to flood the place....its soo sad to see the scene when aya makes the discovery about the illness herself..plus from a parents' point of view - the tears they have shed ..

is it me or does the actress who plays aya - is a different one as the story progresses??
usob
i really like this series although it was so sad.
The songs in this series were also very good=/especially the ending song(only human) by k
tikklles
gosh this sereies sucks........wait what i mean by that is it's tooooooo gooooddd... gosh this series deeply touched me....it's soooooooooo...i can't explain...while watching this series i cried like a baby...it's so sad and at the same time so so good....i think this story relates to everyone because this could happen to anyone....so touching....ayo is such a strong girl....i admire her so much...while watching it i felt i knew her.....really wish i could help make a difference in her life...gosh...i'm about to cry thinking about all the sad scences.........so i'll stop here before i burst into tears....
~Sw33tz~
i am watching...slowly as the direct dl is heappps slow (still faster than BT!!)

it is so far touching... i am not crying jsut yet!!! but i bet i will... because the touching part is coming... i don't think i have enuf tissues lying around...

i admire her courage!! the dog she found was cute!! and main character isn't a stunner but a stunner in acting... =D

i luv the stori line!! jap series are so good!!! pity the chinese sub is hard for me to read as welll... oh wellzzz.. but aya's stori is touching... the actress is goooodd!!!! i feel sorri for the mum.... and dad when they found out =D

can't wait to watch more! ^^
tvbfanzforever
up to chapter 4...again tears have fell miserably ..both at heart and in reality.
The woman who plays aya's mum is quite good - acting wise.
the dad is funny at times.
the guy who asked aya out to the fireworks exhibition and to the zoo, is that her basketball coach?

just when she starts getting asked out by guys..this happens happy.gif'
Minikki
This japanese serie was very very sad !! sad.gif
I think I had cried more than 1 litre of tears! sad.gif
tvbfanzforever
gosh..if i was crying buckets watching the series.. what would it be like if i read her actual diary??

from what i make out (through my understanding of reading chinese)..from the links provided here..the doctor who treats aya in the series is actually a doctor in reality plus he was really aya's doctor in reality .... plus he made a guest appearance for the tv adpation of aya's life..hmm. Wow..very professional and boy must he have been touched by aya's illness in order to make a tv adaption of this ,and to of become a family friend of aya's family
tvbfanzforever
was wondering..when did aya die? she had to live with the disease for 10years..and she passed away at age of 25 wavecry.gif happy.gif' .. It must of been perhaps of couple of years ago..in that a tv series adaption of her life was made so soon..
I like the way family bonded here
i cry when i listen to only human happy.gif' ..reminds me that i need to cherish things in life.
tvbfanzforever
are there only 3 songs featured in the series?? the theme/ sub theme song and the one the choir sang?

yea, i think those 3 are the main ones played...........the ending one is Only Human by K...............the one that plays whenever Aya and Haruto are together is Konayuki by Remioromen............and the choir one is also sung by Remioromen called 3 Gatsu 9 Ka.................. biggrin.gif
tvbfanzforever
i totally agree with it being a good j-drama...not seen a j-drama in ages!! I am only half-way through this..
rambutan.lucy
Still two more eps to complete dl... but why everyone likes this so much when most shy away from sad endings?? Is the acting of the two leads any good and is this an idol drama? I have this prejudice against idols' acting skills.
tvbfanzforever
with any dramas..normally they are "not real" stories..just made up stories that end with good ratings and recognition of the audience. OK..a litre of tears is a sad story and is based on a REAL story (without the love element in it)..i like the way family bonded and how she had the courage to live life to its fullest- which is like a reminder to us all..dont frown on things but live life to its fullest
~Sw33tz~
it is getting teary!!!
i am watching using chinese subs.... (i realised my dvds were working.... no need to dl) but then limited chinese limits understanding but still!!!!!

omg soo sad!!! *sniff* i thought and i said i am not teary yet but i am getting teary..... *sigh* good drama!!!!!! ryo is soo cutezzzz!! good acting.... argh.. i am obsessseed nowww.... eeiii

managed to find "behind the scenes/making of" documentary..the pictures of aya on her hospital bed happy.gif' ..her real mum was there watching how the series was filmed etc..
Whilst researching the role of aya..erika cried as seen in the documentary. I think they did a museum display of her diaries and her life
hellopi

this serie is really beautiful... and i am so shock that it's base on a true story. Aya is a really brave girl.
Birdboy
I saw it too. The real Aya's case is even worse than the Aya in the show. Might be because of the fact that the video taken of the real Aya was when she was 23 years old (2 years before she died).

For those of you who want to see it, I have it but it is without subs. You can get it from Jpopsuki. Register there and search for "1 Litre of Tears Chokuzen Special" in the Torrents section there. Of course, you need bittorrent/bitcomet/bittornado to download it.
jacciez
i also think that the real life aya suffered more.. since there isnt any luv element at all in the real life edition. I wonder if she had frens so closed to her lk that of the show.. hai.. sad-smiley-065.gif i cried since episode 2 onwards.. this is a drama which took most of my tears away man.. my eyes were freaking swollen by it..

anyway, i cant seem to enter jpopsuki.com..

ehh... do you have the song "march 9" from the show? where Asou started singing before Aya left the sch?
tvbfanzforever
i found the documentary/behind the scenes on www.idols-unlimited.com

just type in a diary with tears in the search facility and et viola. its in japanese with no subs (english)..
its happy.gif' ..cant believe she left us for nearly 20years now
