I first saw this drama as a topic in one of the forums i've been reading..I decided to watch it, and it was really sad =( After watching the drama it made me realize that I'm so lucky that I don't have a sickness like hers. Aya was a really strong girl =) the drama was really touching, the last few eps, made me cry a little.
I agree w/junkpro11 i hope that dis drama wins some awards, or at least one to sawajiri erika! she was really good in this drama, i heard that she is also in Taiyou no Uta (Song to the Sun). hoping to watch that one too =D
i finished this drama in two days too...staying up till 3 in the morning both days AND i had exams...oh well failed them for a good cause? Nishikido Ryo is a MAJOR HOTTIE! first time seeing him...look forward to seeing him a LOT more....

The best drama I've ever seen, PERIOD. It's too good to pass. Even if you don't like sad dramas, you'll find this one amazing. It's so inspiring, and really makes you reevaluate your life. Erika Sawajiri deserved every bit of attention she got from this series (what's happened to her lately?! lol). I was in awe of this whole series, how it touches you right to the core of your body, how it presented Aya's illness (I like how we saw the physical side of it all, unlike other dramas). I loved the relationship between Aya and Asou-kun, it was bittersweet but believable (I'm starting to get sick of perfect, I'll-die-without-you love).
Really, a must see.

This drama was alright, not as good as everyone said it was, maybe over hyped it for me.
with everyone saying they cried so much...I barely shed a tear.. kind of makes me feel so heartless.
I suppose i was hoping it to be more inspiring than it was.

have watched this series months ago...got to know of this one through Ariel Lin...(no she aint a personal friend of mine! but wouldn't mind if she were..hehe)...Ariel said that if each ep is an hour..she woul be crying for like 58 mins...and she watched this on a plane on her way to NY! so I got really interested in this series..and Ariel is so right! this series is such a tearjerker...even as I write this now..and remember what Aya and the rest of the family went through...I have tears in my eyes...what I love in this series as well is that there are so many things that it teaches us...so many quotable quotes about Life...
I lent this series to my friends..and they were sending me text msgs as they were watching..telling me that I was lying when I said that the title is litre of tears...should have been 1 Gallon of tears they said...
paandaPooh, the parents also made me cry a lot...when Aya's mom was keeping her daughter's situation all to herself..and when she was in denial..not wanting to accept that her daughter has that kind of disease...and then when Aya's dad found out that Aya's sick...I cried a river of tears! the pain that the parents went through is just so heart wrenching...then of course Aya's sis and bro...specially when Riko (aya's sis) reprimanded her bro when she found out that her bro was ashamed of their sis Aya...I was so touched! to think that she has always resented her sis...but at Aya's most trying time...Riko was the one who made their bro realize that they should even be proud of Aya...
aaah! would have to stop now...or else I'd be crying 1 litre of tears just discussing this series!
chotto matte!! THERE IS A SPECIAL???!?!?!?! can someone please provide a link to it? i so wanna watch it!

Just finished watching it and it's the first thing to ever bring to me tears...I was in tears or very close to tears in every episode.
One of many parts which made me cry most was when her little sister was lecturing her brother after he didn't stick up for her, and at the end of course.
It's only the 2nd Japanese drama I've watched, GTO live-action being the other, and I don't think it can be topped. I hardly ever cry but this make me.

<One Litre of Tears> is definitely one of my favourite dramas of all time! I've never watched non-TVB productions before, except for <Da Jeung Gum> and some popular Japanese hitdramas in the '90 when I was a child. I started to get interested in it, because TVB aired it on their channel. It basically brought me to the Non-HK world. I was addicted to it, and I still am. <Tears> is definitely one of the most touching, meaningful series, without a doubt for sure! This series is different from those sappy, corny, overrated Korean tearjerkers, which I completely dislike (no offense though). I actually felt more sad when I knew it was based on a real story. <Tears> is kinda predictable, but yet it is able to touch many audience's hearts. I've re-watched this with my parents and sister. Both my sister have never cried in front of my parents during a series, but for the first time, we just couldn't hold back our tears. And so does my mother, and probably my father - who was also deeply touched. We cried with them, but we also laughed with them. We didn't only cry because of Aya's unhappy fate, we also cried because we were deeply touched by her motivation and inspiration.
It's not draggy and the drama is not overdone, it goes straight to the point. It's not just focusted on love, but also on the relationships within a family. I really loved the way how they put family in the first place instead of cheesy, corny love. But even without these lovey-dovey scenes, they still managed to create a deep, memorable connection between the female lead and the male lead. I'm deeply impressed with it! <Tears> is definitely the classic of the tearjerkers! Although Aya doesn't live in this world anymore, but her quotes and thoughts are always alive. If you haven't watched it yet: I strongly recommend this drama to everybody! It will make you realise how great life and health actually is. Prepare tissues!
This is one of the quotes which I think is really sad:
''For what do I live?
Where should I go?
Although I can't get any answers, writing makes me feel better.
I'm still looking for my own hands to rescue myself.
But I can't find them, I can't touch them.
I cry loudly in the darkness,
but the only thing that reacts, is my hopeless echo.''
I've also watched the movie version of <One Litre of Tears>. The movie is less tearjerking though. It was very fast paced, but yet it was draggy. Despite the bad things, I still enjoyed this movie very much! I did cry once at the end when Aya's mother was reading her diary. Asae Oonishi (also known as Erika's roommate in the drama version) was absolutely fascinating as Aya. Her portrayal of a disabled girl is really natural and realistic. I was impressed with her talent. I enjoyed watching her more than Erika, though I like Erika as well.

Bwear, you've read my thoughts exactly. I hardly watch series outside of TVB and 1 Liter was my first Japanese series..and what a series it was!

I watched it because it was praised a lot and because TVB dubbed it into Cantonese, so easier viewing for me.
It truly was the most touching series/movie that I had EVER watched. From the first episode, you knew what the ending was going to be, but it doesn's stop you from watching and wishing ..that this actually was some sappy Korean series, where there is some miracle cure. And the fact that it came from a true story made it even more touching. But the things I loved about the series was that it was meaningful, more meaningful than other series about there about countless love triangles, this one touches the heart. It's also real, it captures the essence of disease. It shows a very true depiction on how sick people view themselves (why does the disease pick them) and how much of a toll it's on the family, and the frustration by the doctors, seeing their inability to help. The love story btw 亞也 and 麻生 (sorry, don't know the names in Japanese, so I'm just going to use the translated names in Chinese) just added to how beautiful the series was, and I liked how even to the end, the family was still the focus.
Not to mention, I think the series was perfectly casted. Erika was really good in it, very natural. And despite all the negative news she gets, she's a great acting talent no doubt. Also, the actress playing her mother was awesome as well, incredible performances.
I think I cried TWO liters of tears, watching it. From episode 1, I started crying all the way to the end. I think I start crying when the song for 麻生 and 亞也 play. But I think the saddest episode was episode 10. All throughout 亞也 had been brave, meeting on her disease..but when it got to episode 10..and the disease took away her walking, she finally broke down (and that was just

). When she fell on the floor and couldn't even contain her urine, and 麻生 asked to leave, while the mom cleans up the floor crying. Plus, when she wanted to call home, but her hands wouldn't obey...and she lost all will to live and asks her mom to save her. Gah at that point me and my mom were like hysterical and drenched in tears. Also this was the episode when she asks 麻生 to not see her again because it just reminded her of the dreams she could never accomplish. Then of course, near the end of the episode, when the parents asked her why she broke up with 麻生, and she asks them.."Could I ever get married?" and the silence from the parents & the doctor, unable to answer because they knew the answer..and everyone crying..
Other great scenes:
- When 亞也 was conducting the class to sing March 9th song, and her dad in the audience is talking to the mom and saying that he doesn't know how to face his own daughter.
- I loved the development with 亞也's sister, Ah Wu, how she realized that the only thing she can do is to study harder to get into her sister's high school, to complete her sister's dream.
- When 麻生 yells at the class that they shouldn't treat her like that and leaving with her..but cries because he knows he's not any different.

Woo, after some searching, I managed to get the translated book.
I watched like 10 minutes of 1LoT from TVB, but I can't STAND anything TVB dubs as it sounds like when the characters are in distress, they sound like they are constipated. Overall, just terrible watching anything dubbed, so I managed to get the subbed version instead and finished watching it in 2 days.

so far this japanese series is the most dramatic and tear jerking one that i've watched!! i just finished it a few minutes ago and throughout the whole series, i was really moved to tears, my eyes were olready swollen coz of it..it's just very sad watching Aya, struggling sooo much to fight her illness even though it was olready hopeless but i was really touched by her very optimistic attitude and view on the fate given to her..honestly, what drives me crying was not Aya herself, but the people around her that were very much affected with Aya's suffering specially her mother and father..knowing what's happening to their daughter, is simply just heartbreaking for the parents..being unable to relieve her from the illness, the only thing that they cud provide her is of course their full love and support..
so it was basically derived from a true life story, and i must say that the series really did well on portraying it specially on the lead character Aya played by Erika..bravo to her!!
this series just gave me a headache coz of tooo much crying eh?!?! hihihi..

I just started watching this tonight and I just want to say that I'm really glad it's not draggy. I've been hearing good things about this series for ever but I've been reluctant to start because first of all, I've never seen a Japanese series from beginning to end. I don't like watching shows that speak in a language that I don't understand and then be forced to read subtitles. I wish this was dubbed in Chinese... Anyway, I finally decided to start tonight and I'm glad I did. I'll comment more after I watch more. Though one episode was enough to tell me that the guy is cute!

have started re=watching this for about the fifth time.. tears have never stopped rolling even though i have watched this that many times
its i think the initial thought of what the disease did to oneself, also to a young girl of 15 years old who had so much "promise" for her future. i think the haruto element is still nice....i liked also the fellow basketball player too..
despite watching this a few times now, i have noticed a fatal mistake in the series, i dont know if its me but when haruto was doing that entrance exam to the medical school, i am sure the paper read 2008. I thought the series was only supposed to be based on the life up to the age when she died in 1988.
SAw the special episode too they screened lately... its a nice tribute but i think they could of explained more...

I just finished watching this, my first Japanese series! I finished it in two days haha. I would definitely recommend it to everyone who hasn't seen it yet. It really helps you to put your life in perspective. The story of Aya's life made me realize that all the things I worry about now are so trivial compared to the fact that I should be happy just to be healthy and alive.
P.S. I think it would've cute if Ako and Asou got together at the end of the Special

I also like this drama and it did made me cry at times but I wouldn't say it was the saddest one I've ever saw. I also watched the movie version of it and I think the actress in this movie is more convincing in portraying someone with the disease. In the movie version, towards the end of Aya's life, her facial features and body movements were portrayed so well. As for the tv version, this actress to me didn't really portrayed it very well towards the end 'cause other than she couldn't walk and speak, her facial features and body movements seemed quite normal to me. That's my opinion anyways.

i just finished this drama and this is seriously the first time I've cried so much!!! I think the actors did a wonderful job portraying the characters, of course my favorites are Aya and Haruto!!!
I totally admire Aya's character....just like her sister said in the drama, how can someone be so cheerful and optimistic knowing that they are dying from a disease...she is so strong, not caring how people look at her in public; I really like how the characters changed in the drama, Aya's sister learned to appreciate what she has and Haruto become soft hearted
What a tearjerker, it's the first Jdrama I've watched and I really enjoyed it.

I am curently watching this episode, so I'm afraid of reading the posts in case there is spoilers. Anyway I want to ask something, so if there's already someone who has asked it before, sorry!
Is this story autobiography? Or based on reality? Because, in the end of every episode there is pictures of this girl who has the same name as Aya but it isn't her so I figured maybe it was based on her life and so they made it a serie. If you know, please tell me.
Anyways, I avoided to see this jdrama because I didn't want to get depressed by the reason that she had a dissease. I've always tried to watch easygoing series so I don't have to feel so sad when something bad like a uncurable disease comes. (Yes i get VERY affected of what I see D:) anyways. I started watching it anyway and now I can't seem to stop.

I have never watched Jdrama because I had a hard time finding recommendations. Finally, I came across a recommendation of 1 Litre of Tears.
I seem to love watching dramas and movies that makes me cry because I would respond to the movie better. Needless to say, I cried from the first very episode up to the last one.
Since knowing that this was based a girl's diary, I got more upset. I ended up cursing our creator for letting such things happen. I couldn't comprehend why diseases exist and why it happens to young children who has a lot to see and live for.
Amazing drama. A must see!

Yes, it is based on reality. Based upon the diary she wrote from when she discovered she had the disease until she couldn't write anymore. I managed to find the English translated version of her diary and it's a lot like the drama. I barely read, never even read a required text book, but this was one of those books I can say I voluntarily read out of my own free will. It's a good read
