Roger Kwok and Jessica Hsuan were invited as guests to a promotion at a certain photographic equipment brand's showroom with the bosses hoping that they will bring a spirit of 'Wong' (fortune) into the store.

Jessica and Gallen Lo are good friends and recent reports suggest that Gallen's forthcoming series "Star Chef" has seen Jessica being recommended as the female lead role. Yesterday, when Jessica was asked to confirm this, she says she has never even heard about this rumour and in fact, she will be with Roger filming in Wuxi in March for new Taiwanese series "Number One in the World". Other co-stars will include Damian Lau and Li Yapeng and filming will last until at least July, so the schedules would clash.

As Jessica's contract with TVB will be expiring in April, she currently still owes TVB one series. As she will soon be filming in the mainland, the contract has been extended to September when she will return to TVB to complete her contractual shows. As for the renewal of her contract, she says she is not worried, because she has been with TVB for over ten years now.

Also, Roger has been filming on the mainland for a few months now and was unable to return to Hong Kong for Christmas and the New Year. However, he made it back for Valentines Day even though he could not have a romantic date with his girlfriend, spending it out with his family instead. When asked if he had bought her a present, Roger says that he has not had time because of his filming, but he will make it up to her. Talking of his external earnings recently, is he saving up to get married? Roger admits his earnings have increased recently, but the first thing he has learned is not to spend it aimlessley and to save for an apartment first. It turns out that he loves the homes in the Mid-levels, but the prices are over $10 million and he has not saved enough yet.

"Jade Starbiz" is moving to new studios and arranged yesterday for hosts and special guests such as Roger Kwok, Moses Chan and Lau Fung Ping to attend a blessing ceremony. As this coincided with International Women's Day, the show had arranged for a batch of flowers to present to all the ladies present.

Moses Chan had earlier appeared on the 'Kitchen God' part of the show to cook steak, becoming the highest scoring guest star. Today, Roger will be demostrating Chiu Chau food and he is confident that he will beat Moses' score. When asked if he has good cooking skills, he laughs: "I am a visionary chef, each time I eat some good food, I will ask how it is made and I will imagine myself cooking the food. Luckily I have a good memory, so after I hear the recipe once, I know how to cook it."

Has Roger cooked for his girlfriend? He says: "Less now, because I am busy, but her cookery skill is not bad." Will Roger be celebrating women's day with his girlfriend? He laughs: "She is not a woman yet! (Have you given her a present for the occasion?) Maybe I will give her some kitchen utensils, so she can cook for me." In the last six months, Roger has been filming in the Mainland and after a short break back in Hong Kong, he will be heading back to Wuxi next week for another series. He plans to return to TVB in July: "My work plans are six months working away and six months at TVB, so when people want to book work, I don't have time until 2005 and they will pull faces because they don't know what they will be filming then."

Although Roger is often away for work, he is also making some money so he has revealed he will be buying some property in Hong Kong. When asked if he will be choosing a place on this trip back, he says that he will wait until the prices fall. Although the prices have gone back up, Roger feels that there are too many investors in the market, so he will hold on for now.

Roger Kwok and pop duo 2R were invited to the opening of a cake shop in Macau and as well as wearing 60's style clothing, they learned to make almond cake at the event and attracted many locals to add to the atmosphere.

This is the first time that Roger has been to a store opening in Macau, but he has been there as a tourist and visited the casinos before for a little flutter. He says: "I will not gamble a lot, just a few thousand dollars. I remember once I only had $5 left and put it in a slot machine where I won over a thousand dollars and making me very happy." The fee for this job reached six figures and the reason for inviting Roger was thanks to his character in "Square Pegs" being so popular. So where is his 'lo por jai' (little wife)? He laughs: "I have two this time!"

Roger will be heading out to Wuxi next week to film for Taiwan production "The Greatest in the World" and he will be staying there for a few months. With the feeling he spends more time apart than together with his girlfriend, Roger will go on holiday once or twice a year with his girlfriend and he has just returned from Japan with her last week. Roger also says his girlfriend likes to eat date cake so he will be bringing some home for her.

2R were very intrigued by the cake making and the two love these Chinese style cakes. Big sister Rosanne likes almond cake and little sis Race likes to eat Portuguese Egg Tart. They say that they can buy these cakes in Malaysia, but it is not as light as those in Macau, if they could have it free forever, that would be very nice! With Roger's suggestion that they are his 'wives' for the day, Race responded by saying: "He is so unfaithful, not for me!" but afterwards explained that she meant his character and not him in person. The girls also asked Roger for an autograph.

Having just returned from filming in Wuxi, Roger Kwok returned to TVB yesterday for the costume fitting for "Same Work Same Bowl" that continues TVB's genre of 'golden oldie' shows following in the footsteps of the highly successful "Old Time Buddy" set in the encouraging time of '70's Hong Kong. Roger will be playing the part of 'Charity Opera King' Tang Wing Cheung and as Tang was always of a very slim build, Roger has had to lose 7-8 lbs to play the part. As for the other resemblance to Tang, Roger feels it is his scratchy voice.

As Roger has been away from Hong Kong for a number of months, he has not been able to ask Johnny Tang about his father's life, but he has taken the chance to watch some of Tang's films and copy his gestures and expressions. Roger has already grasped how to perform the role. After watching a show called "Wedding by Instalments" Roger felt that Tang's performance was very spritely with very exaggerated expressions and gestures, with a hint of those of Charlie Chaplin.

As well as watching Tang's films, Roger has also been to the library to do his research and he has found that Tang was a very talented man. He says: "Brother Cheung was very clever, he was able to perform Cantonese and Peking Opera and I have to sing a few lines in the show. It doesn't matter if I don't sing it well, let's see how badly I do!"

"Same Work Same Bowl" is set in Hong Kong in the '70's and Roger's character will show some of the little petty savings that the citizens made at the time and how to find ambition in life. Cherrie Kong will be playing Lam Fung, Kenneth Ma has been cast as Tang Kei Chan and as for Myolie Wu, who will be playing Tang Pik Wan, she refused to be photographed, saying she has not got any make up on.

Roger Kwok's new series "To Get Unstuck In Time" also starring Flora Chan and Hui Siu Hung will begin airing next week. The story tells of police officer Roger who contacts his dead father through a time warp cellphone and they work together to solve a crime.

As Roger and Hui do not actually have any scenes together, their scenes are done purely as them talking to each other on the phone and this is a great challenge for Roger. He says: "Because his lines are recorded in advance, I have to adapt my scenes to his lines before the two scenes are brought together on a split screen and so we cannot NG for this. However when the time came to film, I would always fluff up at the end and it was very frustrating, on a couple of occasions, I lost my temper and threw the phone on the floor."

Flora plays a novelist who has been paralysed in a road accident and she helps Roger to solve the mystery behind the crime.

TVB's new series "To Get Unstuck in Time" will begin airing today and in line with Father's Day, a special promotion was held yesterday titled 'Kiss for Daddy' and although Roger Kwok is the idol of many a young lady, he seems to have little effect on little girls as during the games, one of the children mistook him for her daddy, but when she pulled away the blindfold, she was so frightened that she burst into tears and left Roger rather helpless.

Afterwards, Roger explained that he rarely comes into contact with children, so when faced with the crying girl, he didn't know what to do. However Roger indicates he does like children, especially during special occasions like Father's Day where the warm fuzzy feeling makes him want to become a father himself. However as his work is lined up until March next year, this desire of his is very far into the future.

With these words, Roger was immediately laughed at by everyone, explaining that he is not the one to be pregnant and it should not affect his work, but Roger explains: "I am a very traditional man, if my wife was pregnant, then I will not leave her at home alone. If my wife takes maternity leave, I will take paternity leave with her." Although Roger is not ready to have kids yet, his girlfriend Cindy Au is preparing for marriage as she is learning to make desserts. However Roger indicates that she is focussing on making cheesecakes and it is too easy to get fat eating this, so he hopes she can learn to make other foods, such as Western dishes.

Roger was late for the event yesterday because he was busy filming in the morning together with Shirley Yeung and Jerry Lamb in the outlying islands for a Children's Festival promotion. As this is the first time he has taken on the role of Children's Ambassador for TVB, he was glad that the kids he was working with were very good and obedient. He adds that he doesn't mind holding the fort in Flora's absence and although he doesn't know how the ratings will go, he feels that this show will be quite compelling and so is confident in the results.

Flora Chan was away in Singapore filming, so she could not make it back for the event, but she did make a call to say hello to the fans and have a short interview. She indicated that she has been making up some scenes for "Wong Fei Hung and Sap Sam Yee" in Hengdian before heading straight out to Singapore, so that was why she was unable to attend.

As for earlier reports that she was dropped from "Healing Hands" because of her absence from the "Hard Fate" promotions, Flora says she heard the reports whilst she was in Singapore, but she is not unhappy because everyone knows the real reasons why and she does not want to talk about it now it has passed. She emphasises that her relationship with TVB is still good and they have been in contact with her about other shows, but they have just clashed with her schedules. When asked if she was worried about reports arising from her absence again, she says she will take little notice because she is genuinely working. Although she could not be there to take part, she has great expecations for the show, especially the relationship between Roger and Hui Siu Hung because she really liked it.

Shek Sau and his son Sam Chan also took part in another Father's Day event and to be able to spend the occasion together and make money at the same time, they were very pleased and Sam drew a special card for his dad. When Sam was asked whether he had bought his father a present, he said: "I did think about it, but I didn't know what to get him so I haven't got him anything yet! However, even if I got him something it is just the thought that counds, my dad is not a greedy person, so when we have finished work this evening, we will go for a celebratory meal."

A group of cast members from "To Get Unstuck in Time" including Roger Kwok, Patrick Tang, Cherrie Kong, Kiki Sheung and Hui Siu Hung took part in a promotional event at Ripley's 'Believe it or Not' exhibition at the Peak. They walked through the migraine inducting 'tunnel of time' and they had a contest to see who got dizzy first, with the winner having to sit in the electric chair. Although the plastic bags were at the ready just in case, no-one actually got dizzy, but when Roger pretended to be sick, he was immediately grabbed by the reporters and made to sit in the chair. The electric chair is a genuine one from an American prison that was used in the forties to execute twenty three criminals. However Roger seemed rather oblivious to this as he seemed rather excited and even bolted on the leg cuffs. However, just for good luck, the producer gave Roger a lucky packet. Roger said: "I don't mind, I have to do my best in any promotion this time. (If the ratings are good, will you agree to marry your girlfriend?) Let's break Ah Wong's record first!"

Patrick Tang was asked about Deep Ng's arrest and he says that he had just recently called Roy Chow, who was unhappy about waiting for his sentence and then this happens to Deep. He says: "I had spoken to him before and he seemed fine and I felt he was very much like Eason Chan! However up to now, we don't know if he was taking drugs for sure or whether he was planted, but I do hope he is okay." He also feels that this type of news will affect his generation of singers.

Cherrie Kong also took a seat in the electric chair, saying she has nothing to fear. She had earlier been to South Africa to film a travel special, but she did not buy any diamonds because she says that they are very similar to those available in Hong Kong: "I already have a half-carat diamond and my ex-boyfriend also bought me some smaller stones. (How is your love life at the moment?) Totally blank, just going with the flow."

TVB's annual TVB "Childrens Festival" opened yesterday and a group of Childrens Ambassadors including Jerry Lamb, Roger Kwok, Shirley Yeung and Don Li appeared at the opening event to play games with the kids and having evaded TVB's 'freeze', Jerry seemed very enthusiastic about his work.

After being reprimanded sternly by TVB for his earlier public criticism of the company's policies, Jerry's punishment was to be frozen for a short while, but due to a suitable replacement not being found for his host role for "Jade Solid Gold", it would appear that Jerry has managed to escape punishment. With his appointment as a Children's ambassador and then the arrangement for the new series of "Super Trio Show" to begin filming in August, his work has luckily not been affected.

As for getting away so lightly, Jerry is very happy and admits that he must hold his mouth sometimes, but is glad that his good relationship with people has led to good words being said for him and for this he is very grateful. After this lesson, Jerry says that he has been asking for advice on how to say things from people such as Eric Tsang, but he says that he will maintain his stance if he meets with other unfair situations in the future as he will support reason and not familiarity and he hopes people wil understand this.

As for Roger's new series "To Get Unstuck in Time", the first weeks ratings will be revealed today and he says he is quite afraid in case it breaks the record set by "Square Pegs". Although the storyline has been criticised as being a copy from the film "Frequency", he feels this is not important because it has been successfully remade.

Also, Roger denies that he plans to get married before next spring due to next year being a 'blind year' pushing his wedding plans to the following year. Although Roger is nearly forty years old, he is still in no hurry to start a family before he gets married. Roger laughs: "Hong Kong has laws and I have an image, my actions will affect other people, so I will not do things rashly."

Roger Kwok, Kiki Sheung and Cherrie Kong took part in a radio show interview yesterday, promoting their new series "To Get Unstuck in Time". As for the 29 point ratings result in its opening week, Roger says he is satisfied with this and he says openly that his screen mother Kiki is fantastic. Roger says: "In the show, Kiki is arranged to play my mother at at first it was hard to accept because she is not that much older than me and I was worried about the results, but we had great chemistry when we worked together and it was great. Although this was the case, one such experience is enough."

As for this being one of TVB's better results for a while, Roger says that as it was the Dragon Boat Festival last week, the ratings went up by two points and he was pleased with this. Also there are many viewers who watch on the web and these ratings cannot be measured. He believes that the most important thing are the reviews that back up the ratings. When Roger was jokingly asked if he would wear swimming trunks if the ratings were good, he replied in jest: "I can't, but ask Cherrie Kong!" In response to this, Cherrie says that whatever Roger wears, she will wear too.

Also, being praised by Roger for being a fantastic mother, Kiki also says that no matter how good it was, once is enough!

Roger Kwok, Kiki Sheung, Shek Sau, Cheung Chi Kwong, Matt Yeung and Lo Koon Lan were among the cast members from "To Get Unstuck in Time" taking part in a promotional event in Kowloon Bay yesterday. They played games where they had to piece some photofits together as well as some interrogation activities.

Talking of last weeks ratings staying at 29 points, Roger feels that there was a slight rise, but it just didn't take it over the thirty points mark, so this doesn't count. He also says: "I know that the first of July holiday made the ratings fall by about four points, so I am still confident in the ratings to come, especially next week when the story tells of Flora's change in destiny and the suspense grows." As there is confidence in the ratings, there have been many private wagers placed and Roger has placed one for a two point rise in ratings, with the winner getting a meal paid for. With the good reviews being received for this show, will there be a sequel? He says that there is a possibility.

Roger laughs that although he is currently filming for new series "Same Work Same Bowl", but every time he in on location, he will meet some members of the public, who will ask him about the story to "Unstuck", leaving him a little confused. Roger fell ill whilst filming for "Same Work", so there were some shoots that had to be cancelled. He says: "Recently the weather has been very unsettled and it has been hard work on location, with temperatures reaching 37 or 38 degrees in July, so I feel that we need to care for the environment. Especially after watching the movie 'The Day After Tomorrow', I feel that we should use less resources. Now when I take off my make up, I am wary of how much paper I am using and I will take a towel with me out on location so I don't need to use tissues."

Kiki Sheung is also often asked about the storyline but she keeps her lips tight, telling them just to keep on watching. There have been comments that her sacrifice to play Roger's mother has been worth it, because the reviews have been good and she laughs: "No sacrifice, in truth I am older than Roger!" Kiki says that she does not mind playing older characters, after having played a seventy year old in an ATV production before. She adds: "As long as it is a good show, then I don't mind playing the mother or the granny, playing a granny at forty is not bad. (Are you revealing your age?) Let's just call it forty then!"

When they were asked by viewers who murdered Hui Siu Hung's character in the show, Roger immediately pointed the finger at Kiki and handcuffed her. So was she the murderer?

Roger Kwok - Self-found Enlightenment

In the series "To Get Unstuck in Time", Roger Kwok's character and his father are separated by twenty years of time, but their obstacle is broken down by a mobile phone that allows them to solve cases together. In real life, for Roger to communicate with his father who has memory loss, he has to chat to him for half an hour to jog his father's memory of himself. In fiction and in reality, there seems to be some difficulties with the communication between father and son, but in the story, he and his father can speak directly to ensure understanding; in reality father and son may not be able to share a true conversation. When Roger is asked if he has any regrets, he says: "No! As long as he is healthy then that is enough." With a rather curt and direct personality, Roger has suddenly been awakened and he wants to change himself to become less demanding and to find one's own freedom. What has led him to this enlightenment?

Father just wanted us not to go bad

In past interviews, Roger rarely speaks of his father, but because his new series tells of a father and son's love across generations, so one is curious as to how he and his father get on in real life. Roger thinks and says: "In my memory, my father would leave for work every dat at six or seven in the morning and work for over ten hours until six or seven in the evening. He is a man of few words, so when he came home, he showered, drank a cup of tea, ate dinner and then rested before going to sleep. He would sometimes ask if we had been good and obedient, but would rarely ask about our homework. The only demand he had from us was not to gamble or smoke and he hated seeing playing cards and dice. When we were children, we loved to play with picture cards, but he mistook these for playing careds and it took us a long time to explain to him that these were not gambling implements. Sometimes he would see people taking drugs or robberies on the television and he would say to us: 'You must not do this, otherwise you will go to jail.' His words did not have much philosophy behind them, but were very practical. As well as listening to his teaching, the most that we would speak to each other would be when he returned home and told me to go and buy beer and pop with him. As I was not allowed to drink, then I would ask him to buy a soft drink so that I could have half."

Roger's father worked hard every day and earned $50 a day for his labours. It seems like a small amount, but in those days it was enough to feed his nine children. "In those days, you could have a big meal for $20, so my father was also able to save some money, but he worked as a boat repairman and he was paid daily, so there could be times when he would have no work for more than ten days at a time. When work stopped, there was no food, so he would always stock up for a rainy day and save some more money up. The pressure on him from the family was quite great and there was always a feeling of danger, but my father never gave in as he grit his teeth to bring us up. Nowadays, people will commit suicide when they meet with problems, but in truth life can never be as bad as it was then. People got through it then, so why can't people bear it now?"

Only want Father to be healthy

Roger's father is already in his eighties and he has problems with his memory, so every time Roger goes to visit him, he has to spend half an hour just chatting with his father to jog his memories of his son. He is unaware of Roger's current success and cannot share with him the moment of happiness when he got his award. Does Roger feel regret towards this? He shakes his head and says: "No, I will accept this reality and will not feel uncomfortable about it. As long as he is healthy and free of any illness, then it is enough. I will be treasuring any time I can catch with him and my mother and with the nine of us taking turns to spend time with them, they will never be lonely."

With his father picking up odd jobs when he was in the repair business, Roger laughs that he is also doing 'odd jobs' as an artiste. "We are very unstable, we only have work when people offer us series and films, if there are no offers, then there is no income. When you have finished your contracted series, or before the offer of a new contract, then there will be times of instability and you need to have a great confidence in yourself. If you downgrade yourself from say a first lead to a second or third lead role just for the job, then it may be more difficult to get back up to the top spot again."

No complaints about long hours

It is hard to move up, it is even harder to keep your position at the top and as well as having good acting ability, a good attitude to your work is also the key to success. Remembering the time during the filming of "To Get Unstuck in Time", he had to work until 4 am one night and then was due to start location filming again three hours later. Not only that, but the location was on top of an advertisement hoarding three storeys high and faced with jumping onto a moving truck and a chase scene, Roger still arrived on time and did his utmost to complete the scene without a word of complaint. "I am luckier than most in my work as it is working with personal creativity and without any boredom. I feel that working like this is not hard work. I have heard some younger artistes often complain about having to work until four and then start at six the next day and they will moan about this several times. I feel that with this kind of attitude, they are better off not doing this job. We are getting older and older, so we are not as agile as the youngsters, but if we don't feel that this is hard work, then neither should they. They should not hold resentment, but work hard to complete their responsibilities."

Learned to find one's own peace

Roger has just returned from Wuxi, where he was filming for mainland production "The Best in the World" and he admits that this was the hardest show he has filmed in the last ten years. "Every day there would be a fight scene and I spent more time with the fight choreographer than with any other co-star or crew member as I personally did most of my fighting scenes. As well as this, I was also responsible for the comedy scenes and these were a physical challenge because I had to use a lot of energy and brain power to think about it. To make people laugh out loud is a very difficult thing and I admire myself for being able to do this!"

Apart from stretching him physically and mentally, this series has also given Roger a great change in his personality. "In the past I was very impatient, wanting to finish all my work in a short period and always racing against time. This led to a bad habit that was I would think about work when I was eating or sleeping and this naturally affected my digestion and sleep patterns. I said to myself that I should not think about it, but the pressure was still there. Suddenly one day I made a decision that to throw away this bad habit, I had to do things in sync with the pace. Even if this meant that I had to let go of everything and lose out on some things, it didn't matter. I had to learn to go with the flow and let everything run its course so that I could enjoy life. Take the day when filming finished for this series. Usually I would finish in the morning and be heading back to Hong Kong in the afternoon, but on that day there were problems that meant that filming was delayed until late in the evening. On that day I said to myself: 'If I don't finish today, I can carry on tomorrow before I head back at my leisure, there is no rush.' Then there was another change as one of the other stars had a hairstyle change and my scenes were finished first. When I went round and shook the hand of everyone there to thank them and thank myself for finally finishing the work. This experience taught me not to force myself too hard because everything has its process and cannot be forced. I hope that I can be more mature and not allow my environment to affect my mood."

Originally, Roger had planned a holiday this summer to travel or to learn something new, but he finally agreed to film TVB's new series "Same Work Same Bowl" because he wanted to find happiness. "I have been working non-stop since September of last year and I did want to take a break, but after reading the script, I felt that I would be very happy filming this series, even happier than having sunshine and seaside. Since making 'Square Pegs', my first consideration for taking on work is whether I will be happy. If so, then I will do it, but if I will be unhappy then I will not force myself, being happy is the only way to enjoy one's work. Those who work for another purpose for purely for money will find it difficult, facing it with a feeling of enjoyment will make everything better!"

Having spoken briefly earlier about his own father, has Roger ever considered becoming a father himself? He says: "Having babies is about destiny because life is a gift from the heavens and not something you can have if you want it. Although I am already in the age group for marriage, I will not intentionally think about it. However I feel that I will be a father who never grows up because I understand children and get on well with them so I would be able to give them a happy environment to grow up in. No-one knows what will happen in the future, if I want children, a lot still depends on the other half and this is not something I can control."

Talking of the other half, Roger and his girlfriend Cindy Au have been dating for five years and with Roger's current success, he should be able to allow Cindy to pull out from working so hard in this business and fulfil his dream of becoming a father, but he has not and in fact hopes for his girlfriend to be able to gain some success in her career. "Men and women need to keep up with the times and I do not agree with the adage of 'Men ruling the world and women ruling the roost'. Those men who do not allow their partners to work are not 'big men', but 'small men' - small-minded men. Many women find great success in their careers and also manage to look after their husbands and children in the home. I hope that Cindy can give her all to her work when she is working, but live a stress-free life outside of work. Although we give each other a lot of space, but our feelings for each other have never slipped as we work hard to keep the relationship going. Couples who have been dating for a while will begin to take things for granted, not saying please or thank you to each other, but we will not do that. If she makes me a cup of tea or cooks me a meal, I will say 'Thank you' to her. This is because she does not have to do this for me, but she does it unconditionally and I should thank her. Some people say this is being overly polite, but I feel it is necessary to let the other person that you care about what they do." These words appear to be coming from Roger's maturity towards both his work and his feelings, this is true maturity!

ONE MORE:

TVB Children's Festival Ambassador Roger Kwok's letter to the Children

I am very honoured to be assigned as an ambassador for the TVB Children's festival and I still remember the time when I was appointed, I was away filming at the time and I was rather shocked because I have never done a children's show since I entered the industry and although I once sung a children's song, I can't even remember the name of the song! How am I qualified for the role? Thinking back for a little while, I finally found the answer, I still have some childish innocence, my attitude is very happy and I am prepared to look after my young friends, so I guess I do fit the bill after all.

When I was a child I had few material luxuries, my usual games included flicking marbles and picture cards. The most interesting thing I remember was bending four toothpicks in half and arranging them into a cross shape, then when a few drops of water was placed onto them, then they would unravel into a star shape. When we went to school yesterday, I would play rock-scissors-paper with my sister because whoever lost had to carry the other person's schoolbag, but my sister really looked out for me and even when I lost, she would still carry my bag for me. Our relationship is still the closest and maybe it was because of those times together as I don't deny that our childhood will affect us a lot when we grow up.

As for our summer holidays, we would head up to the hills to collect the meadow grasses and bask in the sun. Watermelon and cabbage cake would become our cooling foods. As my family did not let me eat any cold foods, not to mention fizzy drinks, but how can you drink a hot drink during the hot summer weather, so when I couldn't stand it, I would take the hot drink and plunge the whole cup into a bowl of cold water and turn it into a cold drink. The most memorable occasion was when I was thirteen years old and I went to summer camp. As my family was rather conservative, I didn't know how to explain what a summer camp was, so I had to tell them that I was staying at a friend's house instead and they let me go. This summer camp was the first time I had been away from home and I was very excited to be able to chat with my friends and play group games, learning what it is to live in a community and look after each other. I feel that these group activities are very important, but I don't agree with keeping the truth from your family, because if anything happens, you should be able to talk to your family and tell them everything, facing them and being able to discuss things.

In this summer holiday, I hope that the children will have a truly happy summer and learn what is happiness. Happiness is very simple, it comes from nature, go and do something meaningful with your family such as going to plant trees as a family or maybe take a morning to clean out the home with the family and relish in the experience, you should not just waste time and just make contact with the computer. From this summer, discover the joy of happiness!

some news.. hehe =D Roger and Myolie!

[Oriental Daily]

Roger Kwok and Myolie Wu were filming on location yesterday for "Same Work Same Bowl" and although the intense heat left them both sweating profusely, they still remembered to shower each other with praises as Myolie commended Roger for bringing her into the scene and Roger showed his admiration for Myolie's singing in the style of the old Cantonese classics. They revealed that they will be singing a lot of little tunes and Roger laughs: "I hope that it will be like 'Old Time Buddies', not only releasing an album, but also taking the show to the stage and making another packet!"

Myolie was afraid of being mistaken for having had another period of puberty or breast implants, so she pointed out: "I have added an extra pad, it makes it a lot hotter, but it also acts as a sponge, soaking up my sweat! The worst thing about it is that if I lift up my arms, the buttons on my costume come apart really easily and that would be very embarrassing, so I have to put some clothes on underneath. She also says taht this is just for the needs of the show: "I am very happy with my figure, so I will not have implants because that would be too fake. I also can't accept putting something inside because I am afraid my body will reject it or it will have to be taken out when I am older."

[Oriental Daily]

Roger Kwok and Myolie Wu were filming earlier for TVB's new series "Same Work Same Bowl" on location in Sheung Wan and the two sat dangerously at the top of a four-storey tall embankment and shot a scene where they shared their feelings and those looking on were sweating with fear for them.

The scene tells of Myolie's brother refusing to go to a famous school because his family could not afford it, but Myolie had mistaken him for wasting the opportunity and was so angry she was in tears. Roger comforts her and when Myolie becomes tired, she falls asleep on Roger's shoulder in a tender moment.

Although the scene was a sweet one, behind the cameras, the couple were not at all comfortable, because if they were not careful on the precarious ledge, they would fall and so they had to stay still for the whole time. Little wonder that when Roger got up, his legs were so numb that he had to limp to the sides and was constantly rubbing his muscles.

Having a great fear of heights, Roger has earlier filmed a scene jumping off a building and now balanced on top of this ledge, he was asked if he was afraid being so high up. He says: "Of course I was scared, it was so high! At least was not so afraid that my legs started shaking."

Working with Myolie for the first time, he praises her for her acting talent, being able to cry as she wishes and to control it well. He says: "She is really good, she cries in an instant. I have never worked with her and I thought she had been in the industry for a long time, but it has only been four or five years. I have asked her what her secret is, because it is very difficult to keep a mood."

[The Sun]

Roger Kwok and Myolie Wu were filming on location in the streets of Central earlier for "Same Work Same Bowl" in a scene where Myolie's brother in the show dies and Roger calls her out to comfort her. In response to TVB's recent compromise for its more valuable artistes, with Jessica Hsuan receiving very favourable terms for her renewal, Roger says: "I feel that the company has always given me a great degree of freedom and I have just recently renewed my contract with them. Although the mainland companies have very high expectations of more popular artistes, but the company arranges things very well."

It turns out that Myolie has also recently renewed her contract and when asked what terms she had asked for, she says: "I didn't ask for anything because I am still quite new and dare not ask for too much. After all, the company has been very good to me all along." She also says obediently: "I did ask for more work because this is the time to push myself hard and if I was too free, then it would be bad!"

[Oriental Daily & The Sun]

Roger Kwok and Myolie Wu were filming at the Shaw Brothers (Clearwater Bay TV City) studios yesterday for "Same Work Same Bowl", where there was a special memory lane market place set built for the show. In the scene, Roger's character is pursuing Myolie's character and in order to win her affections, he has to eat some rancid dumplings, so no wonder Myolie is touched by him and he finally wins her heart.

In order to recreate a scene from the late Tang Pik Wan's classic "Sister Ho sells Dumplings", Myolie has to act out "Sister Wan sells Dumplings" in the show and the crew had provided her with a steamer full of real dumplings. In order to get close to her, Roger often comes to buy them from her and chat her up in the process. As the sun was shining, the temperature was in the thirties and causing the dumplings, fried shellfish and dried seafood to give out a rather nasty odour, but Roger still had to put them into his mouth and seem to be enjoying it.

Myolie says that she only has to sell the dumplings, but Roger and some of the extras have to put them in their mouths. She also reveals that Roger is quite smart in order to reduce the number he has to eat, he improvised and added a few more lines. Although Myolie did not have to eat the dumplings, working under the intense heat still made her feel a little unwell.

However, Roger did not mind eating the smelly dumplings, saying that he can only believe the prop team colleagues when they said that the dumplings were fine. HOwever, he says that he will not be eating the seafood because he might end up with cholera. Roger also revealed that on the Chinese midsummer a few days ago, it was extremely hot and the director saw how uncomfortable everyone was and allowed them all to finish work two hours early to go home and rest. Roger denies this was not as a result of the recent criticisms of TVB working practices leading to accidents. He says that having worked at TVB for so many years, there has always been space for discussion and whenever you cannot take it, then as long as you explain to the director that you will be two or three hours late, then they can make the necessary arrangements and not have to wait around, so they will not mind. As for the good results of his recent series "To Get Unstuck in Time", Roger says: "The producer says that this is the highest rated show for this year. (Will you go and celebrate?) I have not had time yet because I have been filming."

Thanks guys for the articles and cool pics! I'm starting to watch To get unstuck in time right now (I know, I'm a little slow) but I have to say that it's such a good series. One of the best series I think of 2004 and partly because of Roger's acting! He's sooo good in here. His chemistry with flora is also great, wonder why they haven' been paired up earlier...

And again on the aging thing, he's probably old enough to be my daddy but I think he's soo hot still! The man has like one wrinkle on his face and that's it! I wonder what's his secret...

[The Sun]

With the release of TVB's Jade Solid Gold specials on VCD earlier, bringing a series of criticisms about the problem of copyright, there has recently been a series of Taiwanese 'candid camera' show VCD's realeased and on sale for only $19. Since its launch, this series has sold over 100,000 copies and the reason for this is because the stars of this hidden camera footage are well known stars, including some from Hong Kong such as Roger Kwok and Jordan Chan.

In Roger's clip, host Jacky Wu arranges for a very sexy lady extra to do some very provocative moves around him and the worst thing was that his partner Jessica Hsuan was also in the joke, leaving Roger speechless. As for Jordan, faced with the seduction from a 'pork chop' and an older housewife, his frustration caused him to lose his temper. It is planned to release even more of these clips on further VCD's due out late. When Roger was asked about this, he says: "I know about it and every day when I go to work, I get told that the show is very funny. Although I never thought this would become available in the Hong Kong market, but seeing the response makes me realise that I can do comedy and I am quite happy about this."

Roger reveals that when he was over in Taiwan last year promoting "Square Pegs", he was asked to be a guest on this show and at first he was a little cautious about the show's setup: "However, it was just a bit of fun! I did know what they had arranged beforehand, so I just played along to create a funny scene. If I had known how well it would sell, I would have invested in it myself!" As for Jordan, he does not mind the show being on sale in Hong Kong, after all the copyright issues have been dealt with by his record company.

As for Miss Wong who was responsible for the production of this disc, she says: I bought the copyright from the Taiwan company. I know this show was very popular, so I had wanted to release it since last year. (Are you afraid that artistes will be upset by it?) It is just for a laugh, as long as we believe they are good people, then it doesn't matter."

[Oriental Daily]

Roger Kwok and Kenneth Ma donned their 'old maid' costumes yesterday in a final scene for "Same Work Same Bowl". After singing a set of songs on the stage, Roger appeared not to have had enough as he picked up his guitar off the stage and pretended to propose to a rather amused Myolie, creating his own style of romance and making Myolie very happy indeed. She indicates that she has had great chemistry with Roger in the show and hopes that they will get the best partner award in the anniversary awards. She says: "I have never filmed a series where I can't stop laughing, it was great fun! I feel like it went very quickly and all that is left is some location shooting in Zhongshan in September, so I really miss it and I hope there will be a sequel or at least the cast and crew can meet again in another series."

Myolie was praised by the producer for really capturing the character based on the veteran diva Tang Pik Wan and she smiles: "I never think about winning the best actress award at the anniversary, but I would like to take the best partnership award with Roger. I don't think we will make it this year though."

In the show, Wong Yeuk Tung playes the role of Dik Na, but she was mocked for not being curvy enought. She jokes: "I have already used two (bras), is that not enough? It doesn't need to be so exaggerated, as long as I have done my best to meet the requirements." She adds laughingly: "In the show I have to flirt in nearly every scene and seduce people, then swindle them. I am not afraid of setting my character style though as I can't worry too much. If I do well, then people will like me and help me cahnge my roles. Take Ada Choi for example, she started off in not so straight roles, but she is still very popular now."

Roger Kwok and Jessica Hsuan were shooting their pictures for next year's TVB calendar yesterday and this is Roger's fourth time in the official calendar, working opposite Jessica for a second time. Roger has just finished filming for "Same Work Same Bowl" and their photo will have the ancient street as their background. After this series, Roger will be heading into the mainland to make more money to get married with and when asked why he does not go away on holiday with his girlfirend, he says that as he has his work fully scheduled for the next couple of weeks, including recording the theme song for "Same Work", so he has to take time out to rehearse and so has no plans to go away to recharge.

Roger Kwok, Myolie Wu, Cherie Kong, Kenneth Ma and Wong Yeuk Tung were among the cast members from "Same Work Same Bowl" who headed out to Zhongshan yesterday for the location filming. As this shoot will only last until mid-September, they did not take too much luggage with them. Although she was unwell, Roger's girlfriend Cindy Au still saw him off at the port they seemed very loving towards each other. They indicate that this is because they have been apart from each other a lot recently, with Roger only spending just over two months in Hong Kong, so they have to make the most of their time together.

When asked if she will be visiting her boyfriend in Zhongshan, Cindy says that she will not because she has some stage work to do and although one of the stops is in Zhongshan, this is after Roger has finished filming there. Roger also says that she does not want his girlfriend to come and visit him because he is worried about her safety whilst travelling. He says: "This is only a short time away from each other, we have been apart for six months before. If I accept another mainland series shortly, then we may be apart for a while again." He admits that he has been away from his girlfriend a lot this year, only spending two months in Hong Kong and with this shoot for "Same", that has been cut down to just over a month. With the saying: "Absence makes the heart grow fonder", have they found their relationship growing stronger? Roger laughs: "There is nothing unusual that has happened between us, so I don't feel anything particularly good about it. Although we miss each other, we are used to it now."

Mainland production light comedy series "Happy Fields" (Huan Le Sang Tian) has been filming in Guangxi's Hezhou for over a month now and the crew are welcoming China's top class actress Liu Xiao Qing to the cast, where she plays 'Ma Gu' who is a lady who sells rice noodles.

Liu has already headed out to Hezhou for the costume fitting and to begin filming and the experienced actress immediately started to discuss the character and storyline with the director and producer as soon as she put on the costume. On the day that she arrived, it was also Liu's birthday so the cast and crew presented her with a Black Forest Gateau as a gift. As everyone sung happy birthday to her, Liu was very surprised and thanked all her colleagues excitedly.

Female lead Zhang Qian has watched Liu's performances since she was very young and never imagined that she would be able to work with her. At first she was worried that a star as great as Liu would have a very arrogant attitude, but after working with her for two days, Zhang has put all her worries behind her because Liu is very friendly and not as serious as she had expected. She gets on well with all the other female cast members and is very professional, so Zhang has learned a lot from her.

Male lead Roger Kwok play's Liu's son and has many scenes together with her and Roger has looked forward to this co-operation for a long time.

It would appear that tomorrow's TVB anniversary celebration is not only about giving out awards for 'My Favourite TV Characters', in particular the female lead award, but the stars are even competing in other areas, for instance Kenix Kwok is leading so far in the jewellery sponsorship stakes wearing over $100 million worth of gems. As an MC hosting tomorrow's show, Carol Cheng was asked if she was afraid of being overshadowed by all these leading ladies and she says: "It doesn't matter! As long as everyone is happy and the viewers enjoy the show then that's all that matters." As for whether the $30 million early leader Gigi Lai will be adding to her collection, her assistant would not comment.

Jessica Hsuan and Roger Kwok were at a promotional event together yesterday and Jessica was asked whether she would try and pull some votes by lunching with the executives. She said with a dual meaning: "No, I treasure my own personal time!" When asked about reports that suggest she will be marrying her boyfriend very soon, she says: "I have not mentioned about getting married, I don't want to talk about this today."

Mainland production "Happy Fields" is currently in the thick of filming in Guangxi and stars Roger Kwok, Zhang Qian and Mickey chu have been making sparks with Chinese superstar Liu Xiao Qing. Liu has finished her scenes in the show now and she feels that happy times have flown past as the crew arranged a simple goodbye party for her as they all cannot bear to part.

Liu has had many scenes with Roger and Zhang in the show and as they have been spending a lot of time together, they are very sad that she has to leave. After the filming on the last day, everyone joined Sister Liu for a photograph and everyone said that this was a precious opportunity and one that 'cannot be bought for any money'.

Roger was asked how he felt about working with Liu and he said: "She is very professional and really develop her character in a short time. This makes me respect her so much. There was one scene that was particularly memorable and that was when she had to push me. Around me were a lot of props and reflectors and when she pushed me hard, not only did I nearly fall over, I even broke some of the reflector boards around me. Thinking back it was so funny!"

[Ta Kung Pao 29/12/04]

TVB revealed the top rated shows for 2004 yesterday and in the drama section, the top three were "To Catch the Uncatchable" (33 points), "War and Beauty" (32 points) and "To Get Unstuck in Time" (30 points). For variety shows, "Super Trio Show Continues" (32 points), "Sam Hui Returns Special" (25 points) and "Gourmet Secret Agent" (23 points) led the way and for special shows, the top three were "TVB Anniversary Extravaganza" (36 points), "Olympic Stars Special" (33 points) and "Anita Mui Forever Diva" (29 points).

The ratings for last week revealed that the top class "Kung Fu Soccer" fell by two points to an average of 25 points, "Virtues of Harmony" maintained 27 points and "The Last Breakthrough" gained a point reaching an average of 29 points. The show's finale pulled in ratings of 27 points. Responding to the ratings still being rather low, TVB External Affairs Assistant Chief Tsang Sing Ming indicated that this was because of the holidays, this is the usual trend.

With the tragic events unravelling in South East Asia, Tsang was asked whether TVB would be arranging any fundraising events to encourage donations to the victims. He says that as many of the executives are still on vacation, then the decision will be made on their return. As for Production Resources Deputy Chief Lok Yik Ling, Tsang indicated that she has returned to Hong Kong now and is safe and well.

[Oriental Daily & The Sun 08/01/05]

A group of male and female leading stars from TVB including Roger Kwok, Bowie Lam, Jessica Hsuan, Flora Chan and Nancy Sit represented the company as they arrived in Malaysia to attend an awards ceremony, where in the top ten "My Favourite TV Characters", TVB took five as well as Roger's Male Lead Award.

Roger and Jessica's characters from the popular show "Square Pegs" also took two of the awards for the "My Favourite TV Characters", winning international acclaim for the show that brought Roger the TVB Male Lead anniversary award in 2003 making them very happy indeed. Roger and Jessica will be pairing up again at the end of March to film the modern version of "Square Pegs" and in order to recreate the cute 'Ah Wong' character once more, Roger will be piling on the pounds again for a rounder look.

As for the recent slump in TVB ratings, Roger is confident he can help to rescue them with the new show, but for a series to do well, it has to keep up with the trends and have a good quality of its own. Just like the film "Kung Fu Hustle", it has managed to do well in a stagnant film market, proving it is a quality production.

As Roger's other girlfriend from "Square Pegs" Winnie Yeung is currently pregnant and it is unknown whether or not she will be taking part in the new show, Roger and Jessica both laugh taht they can show the birth live! When asked if Roger has considered asking his real life girlfriend Cindy Au to take part, he laughs: "I'd better not, it is better if she stays at home and learns to cook!" - it would appear that Roger would like her to be his personal chef.

Although Jessica was heading out rather early in the morning, her fans were there to show their support and when they heard the press asking whether or not she would be marrying her boyfriend in her break, there was a little bit of a frenzy that made Jessica laugh. She says that she is busy fixing up her house and her parents will be visiting for the new year, so she does not have time to get married. She did want to go diving, but after the tsunami, her plans were scrapped.

Flora Chan has also won an award for her role in "Triumph in the Skies" and also taken the "Classic Scene Award" for her chasing scene in the streets of Rome with Francis Ng. Flora says she really liked this show and later she will be working with Francis again, joining Dayo Wong in Guangxi for a mainland series. She says that this time Dayo will not be in a comedy role and will be playing a serious part.

The Time: 8:00 pm
The Place: Wisma MCA
The Event: Astro Wah Lai Toi Drama Awards 2004

After taking the TVB Male Lead award two years ago for his role in "Square Pegs", Roger Kwok has continued his success in Malaysia, with the show not only taking the award for Favourite Drama with "Square Pegs", but also becoming the Favourite Leading Actor. The Favourite Leading Actress award went to Flora Chan, despite "Triumph in the Skies" only airing recently on the channel.

The feeling was that Roger and Flora both did as well, but a quick count reveals that with three awards, Roger was the most successful artiste on the night and narrowly beat Flora's 2.5 awards. When Flora went on stage to receive her award, she seemed very emotional as she thanked her fans for so many years of support and also indicated that this award reminds her that the path she has taken is the right one.

Most of the award winners were as expected by most people, the only surprising result being Raymond Lam taking the Favourite Theme Song award with the theme from "Survivor's Law", beating the hot favourite Eason Chan with his theme to "Triumph" and causing quite a stir among many.

On the other hand, as Roger himself mentioned: "The award is about being happy and having fun." so at the event, as well as the awards presentation, there were also some comedy sketches, singing and even games with the fans to create some atmosphere in the 'party' hosted by Ander Jen and for everyone to have some fun.

"Square Pegs" modern version planned, but Ah Wong does not have time to get married....

The award for Favourite Leading Artist has allowed Roger Kwok to gauge his success in the overseas markets and he is currently preparing for the modern 'sequel' to "Square Pegs" that is due to begin filming in April. When asked when he would be getting married, he says that he wanted to plan it last year, but it is still the case of not having any time. However, he hopes that next year or the year after, he will have time to marry Cindy Au.

Jessica Hsuan does not want to get married yet

Jessica indicates that she never thought that a the effect of a series would be spread out so far and she never imagined she would win an award in Malaysia. As for not being a top winner, she says she does not mind, so she is not disappointed. She is currently resting, but she will soon be working with Roger again in a 30 episode series and apart from Winnie Yeung who cannot take part, then all the original cast from "Square Pegs" will be in it. Also when asked about when she plans to get married, she says that she has not planned this yet, but when she feels that the time is right, then she will do it.
