Violation of privacy

By MICHAEL CHEANG

Still recovering from an incident in 2005 when an unscrupulous reporter broke into her hotel room, Hong Kong artiste Gigi Leung was shocked to hear that an avid fan had sneaked into her hotel room in China, and had even bragged about it online.

According to a report in China Press this week the fan boasted about sleeping on Leung’s bed and even posted pictures as proof.

“That is so creepy!” remarked Leung when she found out about the incident, before dismissing it as a harmless prank.

Nevertheless, it was not the first of its kind that she had encountered while visiting mainland China. “Once, I woke up in the morning and saw a hotel employee in my room staring at me. I was so shocked at the time, and I had no idea how she got in, or how long she had been there,” she recalled.

Hi Jupi! I don't know...can't read Chinese either. I only understand news in English! tongue.gif

Stars should also have privacy. They still have the right to privacy. The hotel employee should have known that, it's their duty to respect the privacy of their guests.

Rise of the Dragon Girls

By Felix Cheong, TODAY | Posted: 04 May 2007 1036 hrs

They are hungry and they’re everywhere. Of course, it helps that they’re gorgeous.

We’re talking about mainland Chinese starlets who have suddenly made their presence felt in practically every major Chinese language movie release.

Last year, there was Zhou Xun in The Banquet, Xu Jinglei in Confession of Pain and Fan Bingbing in A Battle of Wits.

So far this year, Zhou has had double exposure playing two characters in Ming Ming, currently showing in cinemas here; Fan has starred in the horror show, The Matrimony; and Zhang Jingchu has appeared in Protégé.

And no surprises — the same faces will be seen in upcoming blockbusters: Fan in the Donnie Yen action picture, Flash Point, Xu in the Peter Chan period epic, The Warlords, and Zhang in the Hollywood crowd-pleaser, Rush Hour 3.

Another starlet, Liu Yifei, even beat her compatriots to the coveted role of Golden Sparrow in The Forbidden Kingdom, the eagerly-awaited collaboration between Jet Li and Jackie Chan.

Liu was also in the news recently when she became the second Chinese actress, after Zhang Ziyi, to sign with William Morris Agency, one of the top three American talent companies, whose clients includes Julia Roberts and Mel Gibson among others.

No question about it — mainland Chinese beauties are hot and they rule the roost once occupied by doe-eyed Hong Kong starlets like Gigi Leung and Charlie Yeung.

And there’s hard-nosed economics behind it, according to Daniel Yun, managing director of MediaCorp Raintree Pictures.

Referring to the reasons for Zhang’s casting in Protégé, of which Raintree was one of several financiers, he explained in an email interview with TODAY: “Since this is a co-production, there’s a quota of involvement for mainland Chinese talent.

“And because it’s a co-production with China, it can be released in China without any restrictions. Otherwise, it would have to compete with Hollywood movies to be the 20 overseas imported titles allowed into China each year.”

Although Yun declined to go into detail, pay is most likely a big consideration, too.

These Chinese actresses on the cusp of stardom don’t make diva demands — well, at least not yet. And they don’t mind parts that are little more than the token love interest.

For instance, Fan was given little to do in A Battle of Wits, while Xu’s role in Confession of Pain was clearly underwritten.

The upshot: None of these up-and-coming names, apart from Zhou, really have the star power and clout to follow in the footsteps of trail blazers Gong Li and Zhang Ziyi.

“The key challenge for them,” observed Yun, “is to find a breakout role, like the one which Zhang Ziyi had in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), which will use who they are, what talents they have and build on these fundamentals.”

In other words, while landing a plum role in a big budget production is a no-brainer for these starlets, finding a part that actually shows off their acting chops is the only way to advance their careers.

Zhou has, in fact, already begun doing this, diversifying her portfolio by appearing in the MTV-friendly Ming Ming.

TODAY picks the cream of the recent crop of Chinese starlets and profiles the six who are most likely to crack the international market. - TODAY/fa

The Upstarts

Zhou Xun, 28
Star power: The most promising among the starlets, with enough trophies - Golden Horse, Golden Bauhinia and Hong Kong Film Award as Best Actress for Perhaps Love (2005) - to prove she’s no wallflower.

Zhou has also taken on a wide enough variety of roles to show off her acting chops, from art house fare like The Little Chinese Seamstress (2002) to martial arts films like The Banquet (2006).

Her main stumbling block: Being typecast as a waif.

Watch out for her in: Ming Ming (now showing)

Xu Jinglei, 33
Star power: At her age, Xu is no spring chicken. But her career will probably last longer than those of her peers because she has a side job as a director. She’s called the shots on three films: My Father and I (2003), A Letter from an Unknown Woman (2004), for which she was named Best Director at the San Sebastian International Film Festival, and Dreams May Come (2006).

Watch out for her in: The Warlords (December)

Zhang Jingchu, 27
Star power: Touted by no less than Time magazine as one of Asia’s heroes in 2005, Zhang has done the rounds of martial arts epics (Seven Swords) and cops-and-robbers capers (Protégé). Heck, she’s even appeared in a Finnish production, Jade Warrior (2006).

Fluent in English, this Central Academy of Drama graduate is poised for greater things.

Watch out for her in: Rush Hour 3 (August)

On The Fringe

Fan Bingbing, 26
Star power: A graduate of the Shanghai Theatre Academy, Fan rose to fame playing a maid in the 1998 TV series, Huan Zhu Ge Ge.

The sweet young thing has since appeared in The Matrimony and A Battle of Wits (2006). But Fan still hasn’t shown any real thespian quality.

Watch out for her in: Flash Point (July)

Liu Yifei, 20
Star power: A graduate of the Beijing Film Academy, Liu is fluent in English, having lived in the US.

She took on various TV roles before getting her big break in the 2003 TV series, Tian Long Ba Bu. Signing with William Morris Agency may snag her more jobs.

Watch out for her in: The Forbidden Kingdom (2008)

Dong Jie, 27
Star power: Touted as the next Zhang Ziyi after director Zhang Yimou picked her from over 70,000 hopefuls to star in Happy Times (2000).

But after appearing in 2046 (2004) and Dragon Tiger Gate, work for this Beijing Dance Academy graduate has dried up.

Watch out for her in: Nothing in the works

I think she is either still filming for her new movie or just finished doing so. Currently she is working in China doing shows.

And she might be preparing for a concert in Taiwan or China. A few weeks ago she asked fans to vote on a poll asking which mandarin songs they liked the most to see her perform.

Race Wong Threatens Gigi Leung's Position as Spokesperon of FANCL

Gigi Leung's popularity has been declining in the past year, so it is no wonder that the company, FANCL, has decided to also sign a deal with Race Wong, of 2R, for her to promote their brand. For a six figure amount of money, Race has shot a set of advertisements for skin care products. It has also been reported that FANCL wants Race to star in a couple more of their ads and so, it seems that Gigi's position as spokesperson has been greatly threatened.

In the past year, both Gigi's music and movie career have been quite average. Recently, the spotlight was stolen off her by Fiona Sit in the movie 'Wonder Woman' (女人本色). On top of this, after breaking up with Ekin Cheng, her relationship with her French boyfriend does not seem to be progressing well and so, both her career and her love life seem to be not doing well. But thankfully, FANCL have continued to support her by allowing her to continue as her spokesperson.

Unfortunately, due to her declining popularity, FANCL have decided to find someone to help with the promotion. Gigi's previous manager, Ms. Chan (currently Race's manager) has always had a good relationship with FANCL, so it is reasonable that the company was willing to pay a six figure amount of money for Race to work on a single advertisement. As FANCL are also planning to hire Race to promote more of their products, it seems that she is threatening the position of Gigi.

Regarding this issue, Ms. Chan commented, "Race has definitely worked on an advertisement for FANCL. We are pleased with the fee and the company has chosen Race because of her fresh feel. (It has been rumoured that Race will be working on more advertisements for FANCL.) Don't say that, I hope there will be a chance to work together in the future." Ms. Chen then firmly stated that Race has only shot an advertisement, has been made an ambassador for certain products and that there is no chance of taking Gigi's place has spokesperson.

thanks for the news, the first one which was post by dee-lush was more like a bad news but I don't care at all and I don't think is a big thing that reporters write that kind of thing b/c gigi is not in HK lately so of course they think her popularety have decrease b/c of that. Also six figure of an add is not that much so I don't think they should do a big deal with it also rase is not near as popular as gigi are. If I should be honest Rase is not even popular in HK, I mean if u ask ppl of course many would know who she is but nothing more then she is one of the member of 2R.
