Jeanette Aw presents her first time singing on stageXin.sg - Saturday, May 16

Jeanette Aw may be the most gracious dancer and Dai Yang Tian the most serious actor. However, the limelight would fall naturally on the three "Nyonya aunties" played by Chen Tai Ming, Huang Jiong Yao and Ben Yeo, as they sashay on stage for their drag performance in the upcoming musical The Peranakan ball.
The mega television production The Little Nyonya took the local audience by storm. Attempting to create another wave of Nyonya craze with the drama inspired musical, The Peranakan Ball, the script writer of the play explained that the foundation of this musical stems from the classic scenes from the drama. However, the female lead differs from the drama, and instead tells a Cinderella tale about a lowly maid with high aspirations working in a rich family.
The plot begins within the richest household in town, where Chor Chor Tan yearns to find an ideal lifetime partner for her beloved grandson Philip Tan (played by Dai Yang Tian). With that, she decides to hold a ball and seeks the help of Yue Niang (played by Xiang yun) to help out with the preparation. Yue Niang empathizes with Bee Tin (played by Jeanette Aw), who is the maid of the household. The moment she meets her, she feels an affinity with Bee Tin as she reminds her of her young self. She then imparts her fine culinary skills to Bee Tin, hoping to help her gain attention of Philip at the ball.
Besides Aw, Dai and Xiang who acted in the drama serial, the rest of the cast includes Ann Kok, Chen Tai Ming, Ben Yeo, Huang Jiong Yao and Yang Jia Ying. Singer of Little Nyonya theme song, Olivia Ong is also invited to present the song live during the play.
Amongst all the actors, who've had to sing and dance on stage, Aw with her dance background has the best moves. However, having graduated from university for seven to eight years, where she majored in Theatre Studies, Aw could not help but feel nervous when performing on stage. Furthermore, The Peranakan Ball is a musical and is different from the usual play productions she has participated in before.
The director of the musical said that on-stage play is very different from drama serial, it is a live show thus does not allow any NG (no good shots) or second takes.
"I feel that the hardest part is to put everything together -- the actors need to dance and sing at the same time. To remember the dance steps and lyrics, you need to keep on practicing, or else everything will be in a mess," the director said.
The pressure is just as intense on the male lead as Dai explains, "I have zero experience when it comes to dancing or acting in a musical. I've just sang all the songs today, and it is really a challenge for me. I definitely need more time to practice before I can handle them. However, the whole experience is kind of fun, from the songs, to the directing and acting, I can say that the musical is really creative. To me, it's like I'm attending a class, its fun."
Having seen Dai's performance at the Star Search programme in China earlier on online, one cannot deny that there is still room for improvement with his singing. His dancing skills also pale in comparison when standing on the same stage with Aw. Knowing his shortcomings, Dai is putting in extra effort to improve, hoping to achieve better performance during the debut musical.
At least, Dai need not face the pressure of acting the same role as in Little Nyonya. Instead, he acts as a Baba, differing greatly from his Japanese character in the drama serial. With that, Dai felt as if he had switched identity with Pierre Png, who acted as a Baba in Little Nyonya.
Since the musical depicts a Peranakan Cinderella story, the audience may get curious if the two love birds would have any intimate scenes on stage?
"That we have to keep it a secret," answered Aw cheekily. Dai, standing beside her agreed and took the chance to ask the audience to attend the musical and find out themselves.
