I don't know. But here in Cambodia, on cable tv, they show a lot Chinese series (HK, Taiwanese, ...) double in cambodian (khmer). Most of them are TVB series, and few ATV series. I watch all TVB series, and my friends as well. At school we talk sometime about those series. Once, got 2 tvb series "at different hour and channel" finished, and they show 2 ATV series. I asked my friend, did they watch, they said no, "the one about tsunami" was rubbish. And another was also rubbish and the actress wasn't pretty. And she added that only TVB series that r entertaining to watch. I and another friend think so too.

In Singapore, our chinese channels show hk shows from both TVB and ATV.
However, ATV shows often has a certain quality lacking in them, be it the packaging, lack of famous stars, etc. TVB shows have that appealing factor abt them that just draw more users to watch. That's why most rental shops here carry only TVB shows specifically.
My friends around my age who are into TVB shows all agree that they are a notch above our own local drama serials as well. The only ATV shows that i used to watch was "My Date With A Vampire", which was quite entertaining. Singapore is currently showing the third season, which is however totally a huge contrast from the 1st season. Haha!
I guess people arnd that world are just more exposed to TVB stars as compared to ATV. Besides, TVB is a richer company compared to ATV, therefore they obviously have the monetary advantage over ATV in terms of filming better quality tv serials.
TVB all the way man! Haha!

It is strange I guess. I mostly watch TVB series as well rather than ATV - but that's not to say I don't watch any ATV. I guess there are ATV series that I'm less interested in general.

I watch tvb more since I think TVB has a lot more actors and series coming out. ATV in the other hand.... not so good since they have a lot less actors and series. Like I see the same actors almost in all of ATV series. Kind of boring.
TVB in general is still far better than ATV. I understand that a lot of people complain about TVB nowadays but believe it or not, TVB has produced a lot more great series over the years. ATV might has one or two good series but that is only once in a while. I admit that Flaming Brothers was a very good ATV series but how many of that types of series do you see in ATV? Not a lot. Plus, ATV actors/actresses are not that actractive. I don't care whether it's the makeup or whatever, but TVB actors/actresses just look better on screen.

Not been a liar but I haven't even finish 1 atv series b4....
btw, I think that tvb artist are WAY more attractive than the atv,I guess that will make the show more interesting. (Maybe bcos I don't really know atv)
Also, TVB has high cast and setting, they always film in lot of different place like mainland china, or foreign countries. Since I don't really know atv series, all I saw them was on the commercial, atv doesn't seen to go to any interesting place to film.........
Well, even atv have good story line, I still wouldn't watch it
Heaps of my frends said that Central Affair (wtv how u call it) is really good, and they told me that michelle and raymond is in it

,but I am not interested in it for some weird reason, I think I am just unlikely to watch atv.

(ATV fans don't mind about wat I said, just an opinion)

Well I would like to watch ATV shows is well though the problem is that I don't get any of the shows here as the channel I have is basically TVB. ATV have put out some really good shows that I think so are a lot better then a couple of TVBs like MDWAV 1, 2 and 3 also Rulai is good.

i think its jus individual preferences..and when ppl say tvb ppl are prettier...i think they seem prettier b/c were used to lookin at them... some atv actor/actresses...moved to tvb too... theres lots of ppl in tvb who are ugly.. but its b/c of their acting that make us realise that their...cute ...cool..or funny.. if u dont know a star ..then u think there ugly.. once u know them they dont seem so bad... same w/ regular ppl.. so i think its unfair how ppl say atv ppl are ugly.. vs tvb.. if they weren't good lookin..then they wouldn't be stars.

The quality of the dramas are better in TVB. Sometimes, you might get a drama from ATV that's very addictive like Flaming Brothers. I guess another reason is that most of the dramas broadcast by ATV are overseas dramas from China or Taiwan. Therefore, sometimes viewers are not incline to watch it because they don't know the actors ver well. As for me, I only watch ATV dramas that have casts that I know or it has high ratings.

Maybe this will give you an idea:
QUOTE
"Showbiz Tycoon" was ATV's latest "weapon" against TVB ratings but unfortunately could not even withstand against the mild attacks that TVB fired back. Like many big ATV productions, the cast was very promising with Michael Tao Dai Yu and Kathy Chow Hoi Mei who previously co-starred together in the successful "Flaming Brothers". Other notable stars include Carina Lau Ka Ling, Alex Fong Chong Suern, Lai Yui Chueng (as the Pig in TVB's Journey to the West I-II), Astrid Chan Zhi Ching, Stephen Au ( "Ten Tigers of Guangdong"), and Lam Wai ("Knife Song II").
There are two main reasons why ATV series usually lose in the ratings war:
(1) Just for being an ATV production: the majority of viewers are too familiar and loyal to TVB productions to switch over--especially when TVB has just finished releasing a successful series, viewers tend to stick with the next production. Aside from that, actors from TVB are household names while notable ATV actors are not even known.
(2) The publicity for ATV films are often done poorly and inadequately. Many actors (i.e. Amy Chan Sau Man in "The Heroine of the Yang") have complained about ATV promotions done wrong.
Every ATV series that comes out then, must first overcome this deficit with a script executed right. However, despite a popular cast--many imported from TVB--known by many viewers, "Showbiz" lacked the element that many ATV films also did--a compelling enough story.

It could be because TVB existed before ATV so all of the viewers got attached to TVB instead. But it could also be because TVB artistes are more promoted and they have more famous people in their "crew".

I believe there are four, two from each TV station (TVB & ATV) cause they each have a regular Chinese channel where they air their own series & an English channel where they air shows from outside of HK like ER, CSI, etc., unless you include the cable channels then there are more than four

same. i grew up watching both, and ever since young my preference has swayed toward tvb's side just based on experience. imo tvb tends to market to a larger audience than atv.. as in more family oriented and appropriate (which is why i think they get lots of complaints). also..tvb has always been better in terms of lighting, camera, the technical stuff. there are a few atv series that i really like and even love, but that's very insignificant compared to the number of tvb series that i like, love or just simply enjoy watching. tvb may promote someone until you're so sick of them to the point of throwing up.. but what bugs me about atv nowadays is that in one series i may see a few actors that i like.. but then turn around and they're gone. i barely even see some of my favs anymore (crystal, monica, marco) where as tvb forces you to familiarize with their stars.. which imo is a smart move cause even if you don't like their acting, at least you will know who they are. and lastly, atv just doesn't have the charm and sparks that tvb does.. it's unexplainable.

also something tvb does a lot better than atv is music scores and theme songs. not only is there variety, but also very suiting for the mood and tvb plays the right one at the right time.. just think tlb & wab. terrific. even the regular productions tend to have very good and setting music.

I used to be into TVB from bones to blood. TVB series made my childhood. I grow up with it. I linked myself to the chinese culture bcuz of that. and Ive seen the up an down of both TVB and ATV.
My theory would be that a lot of people categorize TVB and ATV. There's kinda a cliché to say that TVB is great and ATV is bad. It's two different compagny so obviously it would be different. They actually coexist together but TVB seems to have a larger piece of the cake. Bcuz TVB used to be really strong. I would say these past years, TVB has shown a lack of management. They has lost a lot of great stars. Their series aren't like they used to be anymore. The cast might still be appealing for us viewers but it's really not enough to keep our interest on. at least not for me. I'm complaining about the filming quality, the casting, the editing, ... everything !!!!! Because I have expectation from TVB .. from the oh-so-great-TVB
BCUZ I used to believe in them !
I think a lot of person are like that. They feel themself attached to TVB, so they just stick to it no matter how how poorly the script was written or else. bcuz they used to have their interest only for TVB. Until they got too bored and switch to something else or try other channel. TVB can *cough* still produce a fine serie if only they put more effort to it.
ATV ? Just the three letters might make some peoples go all

ATV also has it flaws. Hopefully, ATV seems to have awaken a bit. like everything, both TVB and ATB have their good and bad series. I feel more negatif about TVB now as Ive been deceived many time by them. People might look for ATV or others group too if they start to have more expectations.

I believe that most ppl think think TVB drama are better, and ATV not watching!!
Just like me, I tried to watch some ATV new drama, but found them dull and boring to death!!
Not like TVB is the best, but watchable..........
also the cast from ATV are all the same over the past years......
to those new comers....nobody knows a thing about them, so it's understood why ppl dont watch ATV
I don't have any choices when I was young, my parents only watch TVB, so I grown with TVB, the actors like family, it's sound very straingh but when I look the series from ATV I don't know any actors.

maybe it's because tvb flexes its muscles so much...here in canada, fairchild shows a TONNE of programs from tvb and less to maybe none from atv....even though farichild can syndicate programs from both channels, i think tvb is just more popular and in turn has cornered atv....

back then, when my mom was still in china, and young, TVB wasnt all that, like they are now. when my parents came here to the US, ATV was all they've watched, but there was a dispute over something, and ATV lost its fame, and TVB came into the picture. *shurgs* i just like TVB because that's the only one i've watched series from, but Pawnshop No.8(atv?) and My date with the vampire is my fave, from ATV.

I personally like tvb better than atv because, tvb has more interesting series, i don't say that all their series are great but most of their series are fit for all ages. in the other hand ATV mostly produce series somehow only older people enjoy watching. I don't say that young people don't watch them, but most of us feel these series are boring, just think about it, most of their series were either about wars, politic,...ects. you get the idea.

Although, ATV has been around for ages, I still find ATV unable to compete with TVB, in all aspects. Plotwise, stars, marketing, and promotion, ATV is lagging far behind TVB. Wonder how it managed to stay afloat all these years. *I guess that must be a whole bunch of loyal supporters and advertisers*

Yeah, its pretty sad. The quality just isn't there for ATV. They dont have the best scripts and just dont seem to have the money or care about making a good show or something. If they get lucky and make a good one great but overall they don't seem to spend much time in producing a good show. I mean look at the Great Adventure, its filled with nothing but mistakes. Totall sad b/c its actually not a bad show - but filled with screw ups.
it's all about the script..the acting is fine to me tho. Atv usually drags most events longer than tvb which makes it boring..and can be really repetitive at times. Tvb cuts things short...and makes it enjoyable and entertains the audience fully (not saying that all series of tvb are good)
QUOTE (tsham12 @ Dec 30 2005 4 29 PM)
ATV has a less actors compared to TVB and they're also less appealing.
But those unappealing actors will automatically become appealing when they join TVB. Example: Annie Man, Esther Kwan, Kwong Wa, Nick Cheung, Sunny Chan, Stephen Au, Claire Yiu. If Remus Kam and Kylie Kwok join TVB, I've no doubt they will suddenly turn very acttractive too.

Yeah, because ATV are jus crap, look at the quality of the video/series they produce they use inferior technology and at the end of the day people can see that and it affects the whole enjoyment of the series. Other than that they don't usually have that many good cast, they have crap storylines and some times drag them on too long.

The reason why people TVB is because they are a bigger company, and they have more money to advertise and get a lot actors. ATV actors are mainly old and they don't have as much money to promote their series. But in my opinion, ATV series are better, they're so much more original and sad. They have actors who really know how to act, and not like TVB where you just have to be good looking.

It's the quality, I tell ya. I watched a couple of ATV shows recently (the one with Ng Chun Yu and Wong Chee Wah, and then the one with Patrick Tze and Michelle Ye)...and I have to say the quality sucks! BIG TIME!
The special effects, the multiple scenes thing (to give different perspective and view), the script, the bg music, the acting, the long stretches of silence with nobody doing anything, zooms in on character's face but then no bg music (not enough effect), lots of unnecessary pauses, not enough suspese at the end of the episode to drive people to want to watch the next episode, and sometimes some characters are absolutely not necessary.....
not to say TVB is the tops or is perfect but there's a reason why people want to watch TVB more than ATV - the quality, man.
