PART 2 of Wookie's Interviewcourtesy of roodyQ: We've seen you in the drama "Wooden Carousel" to "Letter to Parents", and then "Hanoi Bride", continuously until "My Girl". Your degree of recognition has gone higher and higher. Is this similar to your development as an actor?Pretty consistent, yeah. When I first started working on "Wooden Carousel" the director didn't think much of my abilities. I felt really down and also kind of angry. At one time I just had to leave as I couldn't keep in my tears (of frustration). But then that incident led me to find my own way in my work, and later the director began to approve of me. In "Letter to Parents", Jin Xiu [not sure who this is, senior actor?] advised me that acting always comes from the heart, and I also learned how important the cooperation between the actor, screenwriter and director is. "Hanoi Bride" is another piece of work that is close to my heart. For "My Girl", although it is very popular, I really feel my function is only about 10%, the rest of it is really Lee Da Hae's brilliant acting and Jun Ki's huge stardom.
Q: But you received a lot of "new star" praise through "My Girl", so how do you feel about this kind of rising popularity?Internally and externally, no difference really! Popularity is like a fragrance that burns. It can burn really brightly, but in the end only leaves ashes...I had a similar experience before on "Wooden Carousel", at the height of the drama it was good but after a time that it's over, the cheers also vanished like soap bubbles! During the "My Girl" broadcast, my fan club membership reached as high as 72,000, but after a while now I think it's down to 8,000! That's why I really don't believe in pursuing popularity. If there has been any impact on me, it's more to do with the kind of opportunities I now have, the kind of choices I would make in my work.
Q: Now it's not rare for stars to have overnight stardom. Compared to this, you've had quite a slow journey. Have you ever felt down about this?Failing an audition would make me feel down. Because this is something that's not within my manager's efforts or the director's efforts, but my own. The time before I got to work on "Letter to Parents" was probably my worse time as an actor, to the extent that I jus couldn't even look at any scripts. Now I understand that all this (even the bad times) is part of an important learning process.
Q: Has your character changed?Well, that's a really hard thing to say. I feel the same, and I haven't heard anyone say that my character has changed.
Q: In acting out a role, do you feel you sincerely understand it?You can't achieve total sincerity in understanding a role. If I can achieve this, I'd already be at the Cannes Film Festival (laughs). Anyone who can say this is 90% lying. I can put in the hard work, but to be the dramatis personae [the actor becoming the role] how do we truly understand this? My mouth could be saying Seoul Gong Chan's lines, but there will be times when my heart says: how strange?! There will be such moments of doubt. So definitely, I have to overcome such doubts, to assimilate the character, then perform the role.
Q: Do you also hope to be a Hallyu Star?I don't think this is something you can hope for. You'd just have to work hard. After "My Girl" i thought I was already famous. But then I realised that it was more because of Da Hae and Jun Ki, so I just went back to my original position (laughing).
Q: Then don't you think viewer ratings and box office is important?I'd be lying if I said no. But more importantly, it's the kind of work/roles and the people that i get to work with that I look forward to. "My Girl" was great. I got to work with many good people, the ratings almost hit 50%, made a lot of friends, despite the cold and working until dawn.
Q: Ever since you started acting, what was the worst insult you had to face?I'm not the kind who is easily hurt / insulted. I've come across comments on the internet saying: "he's not a good actor" "he's not star material" etc. I wouldn't mind if these critics called me up and talked to me. So they get a look/ get to know me (smiles). [not very clear about this part]
Q: By becoming more popular, the public is now more interested in your private life and you can't live anonymously anymore, is this hard? Not hard, but somewhat inconvenient. There are times when I want to lose my temper or shout, and can't. Or I want to say something to someone, but can't. But then every professional person faces this kind of experience, so I can bear with it. If it was only me, i'd go crazy! So the thought that thousands of other people have to deal with these situations too is a comfort.
Q: To what degree would you discuss your private life?I don't like discussing my private life. But in promotional activities or in public events there will be people or fans who ask such questions about first love or personal topics, and sometimes I can't avoid answering them.

PART 3 (FINAL)courtesy of
roddyQ: Now, you have already become a man, and surpassed the youthful stage, are you satisfied with your age now?I think i'm not that young anymore. I'm getting older (laughs). However, the older i get, the more sure i am of what i want. I want to be a successful and prominent actor in 10 years. By then i'd be 34 years old. I haven't gone for military service yet, so i still have a long way to go.
Q: Still not settled with the army service issue?I'm very healthy and i'm sure i'll attend military service. But that will be 3-4 years later.
Q: How different is it NOW compared to THEN, when u juz started working (in the entertainment circle)?Frankly speaking, i envy those newcomers/newbies a lot. Back then when i juz started, i didn't even have my own manager. I had to start and end work with the crew, go home by train and even bring my own clothes to the sets. Everything including the costumes were so old-fashioned, it was pretty hard. Stars now don't even have to worry about costume as all of the stuff are prepared beforehand.
Q: You're only 25 years old, do you feel the difference with the younger generation today?Naturally. We (long-time actors) when we see our senior actors or the production crew will nod a greeting / say hello, but many young people today will act as if they have not seen these seniors! Since i acted in the drama "School" (his first drama), that has been my wealth of experience, my education as an actor [unclear wat he says next]
Q: You're a Type B kinda guy right?Well, people who sit with me for 5 minutes always say my blood type must be B! Although personally, I don't believe in that correlation between a person's blood type and his character, but it looks like i must be a typical Type B guy!
Q: You've been described on the internet as a "beautiful male"! What do you think of that?Makes me sick [hope i got this rite!!], I don't think it applies to me at all. This kind of description is more appropriate for Jun Ki or DBSK, all those who are truly physically beautiful male body types!
Q: Why don't you think this description is not right for you?I don't have the right kind of face with sharpness/angles, but I'm not saying i'm ugly (laughs)
Q: As an actor how do you feel about your looks?I'm satisfied with how I look. I can't change it, right? I really ;think that plastic surgery is a bad idea for men! Whenever I see XXXX [who?]'s nose, I'm tempted to press my finger on it (laughing). Frankly, my face has a lot of shortcomings: my nose has been injured before, the nasal bone pretty badly. The left and right side of my face is not asymmetrical. Compared to a lot of other actors, my appearance is not very good. However I try, I don't have the square jaw or the sharp cheekbones. [Is he serious????]
Q: Before this, we didn't know that you're such a funny actor. Don't you appear on entertainment programmes?Absolutely not [This interview mus be prior to the recent Sang Sang Plus & Come to Play]. I don't have the makings of a comedian, and I'm also a little shy (smiling). This is why I don't go on entertainment programmes. It was worse when I was in school. Every time we had visitors, I would just sit in my room listening to music unwilling to come out. I started to be more outgoing in high school, getting
involved in the class's broadcast activities, interviewing people on the streets, getting involved in clubs/societies, sometimes singing in the subway [!]. So gradually i jus realised that I have this side of me that I didn't know, hidden characteristics. Anyway, if i jus talk in a boring manner with people, then it would
make the atmosphere very dull and a waste of time, won't it? But if I make an effort to be engaging and animated, then it would be at least interesting for reporters/journalists, perhaps they'll even help make my conversation better, right? (Smiling) [oh, very clever!]
Q: At present, would you say you're happy/not happy?Happiness has always been an easy/simple thing for me. If there're no quarrels at home, I'm happy. If my father who works long distance and can only come home once a week when my family can all sit together for a meal, I'm a happy guy. Now my movie has got good results, I'm happy too.
Song Yoon Ah once said about him: "he is very different from his tvdrama image. He has an extremely strong masculine character". Lee Dong Wook is very eloquent in his speech, always speaking without reservation, without hiding.
After the success of his silver screen debut, LDW prepares for his next move [not very clear]. Perhaps there won't be so much time in future for him and his crew to sit in one place having a meal, chatting and laughing merrily, because of his increasingly crowded schedule. But, as he says, he can't stop to catch his breath now, he just wants to keep running forward.
