Hello guys, I really wonder which taiwanese celebs can actually speak english. Since there are many actors and actresses confirm in their biographies that english is as one of their languages, but according to my knowledge, there is only a few can; for example: Lee Hom, Angela, Fanfan, Ambrose

So do u guys know who else can speak apart from those above???

KEN ZHU and VANNESS WU of F4 are both fluent in english language.....

hey...erm... not to sound mean or burst your bubble...but a lot of Taiwanese artists (and int'l artists in general) tend to be fluent in english. How GOOD they actually are is questionable. Like Shaowei, Renfu, and Mengzhe of 5566 are all probably considered 'fluent' in English, but does that mean they don't have a noticeable accent? that their english is always 100% and sounds like they are native speakers? no...of course not. They could probably navigate around America fine...probably with a little grammatical difficulty, but that's expected. That's probably the case with most taiwanese stars. After all, English is the basic language of any country nowadays...everyone at least knows some basic greetings/salutations, basic phrases, and the 'essentials' (how do i get to [insert place], how are you, etc). I know Vanness Wu grew up in America so his English is probably conversationally perfect...as for Ken Zhu? Hmm...didn't know that. Maybe because of his Singaporean(? Malaysian?) background that might be why his English is so good. Leon Jay Williams (Li Wei Lian) has really really good English, but that could be because he has English grandparents (? or just grandfather?).

Isn't Michelle (from Michelle & Vicki) also speak perfect (or conversational) English? She went to college in Canada and she was raised in Canada or at least lived there for a very long time, didn't she?

For future reference: we have that ABC stars thread that you can check out and get a glimpse of the ABC stars that definitely speak English (conversationally) perfectly.
pwanda
If you're talkin about actually fluent no-accent English, then yes, there are quite a few.

Namely, the ABCs -- Wangleehom, eVonne, Wilber. Anya

Also, Patty Ho (jay's gf) comes to mind...tho she only spent time studyin in the states.
crunchy_cheetos_3
and...
lin chih-ling...
i read somewhere that she taught jerry yan english...
tiffany_vo
i'm here talking 'bout those who can speak really Ok. I mean they dont need to be born in the States or the english - language countries yet they can speak fluently as when they chat with their friends in another language (maybe chinese...)
*lingalicious*
mingdao can speak english to. hes the main lead for Wang Zi Bian Qing Wa. In mao xian wang, he is seen speaking english to navigate around the places he need to go to.
crunchy_cheetos_3
yeah...
but i read on ming dao's thread that his english is not very "fluent"...

wilber, vanness and elva i guess.
Actually it is notcable that from their accent that they are from taiwan.
anyway jolin's english wasn't that great. There was a report saying about her poor command of english
isenkk

i don't think renfu can speak in english so well....his english is only so-so
tiffany_vo
sorry but who is wang renfu???
lilchinkybabi
i think the taiwanese artists with the best english are Vaness Wu from F4 and Jacky Chu from 183 club. It's really hard to perfect your english skills if you've lived your entire life in a country whose main language is not english. I think Vaness and Jacky are both abc's, so their english skills are very good. It's really obvious if you listen to songs that have english words that out of those two groups, vaness and jacky are the best english speaking guys.

i saw his show King of adventure in TVB8, he spoke english to communicate with the local people he visited. well ok to understand but so-so
wang ren-fu, i dont think can speak english, sorry no offence smile.gif

There are alot of artist that claim that they can speak english and that they lived in america for a couple of years. But ive actually think they are CRAP! Like angela she is still kinda FOB. and Jolin, just cause she has an english major dont mean crap all. she is still FOB as.
2 ive heard speak english, like real english. LeeHom and the Machi and jeff huang crew. Thats all.
sorcerez
Yeah. I agree. Although, they can understand and speak the accent really hurts the ears of native speakers. I cringe when I hear poorly spoken English. It's like nails across a chalkboard; not to mention distracting when I am watching a series.

However, my Chinese probably sounds just as bad to native Chinese speakers so I really can't complain.
TK38
Oh yeh vanness, hes got good english, i heard him say something in that concert for the tsunami.
I bet 80% or more cant even watch an american movie without reading subtitles. pfft. saying they know english.
bestmariel
Vanness Wu definitely speaks fluent English, on his interview in the Philippines he was the one keeping the conversation with the interviewer going on, Ken would pop in once in awhile to say something His English is not so bad.

There are others too like: David Tao, Leon Williams, Ambrose Hsu, Dee Xu (Barbie Xu's Sis), Machi (I think the whole band?), 5566's Sam and I think Jason also?, Patty Hou, Lee Hom, CoCo Lee... Uhm isn't she from HK? huh.gif

Most Taiwan stars know or should know how to speak fluent English in my opinion. But I've just noticed but I know more male stars who speak english than female...... just an obsevation happy.gif
mzdeviL
I've noticed that people who tend to study in those western countries have very fluent english speaking skills; such as Vanness Wu...however, for people who stay in their own country and learn english, their speaking skills are bound to be less fluent. Many people are starting to go to either the US or England (some also go to NZ and AUS) to study english and improve their skills. But I think alot of the artists in the tw showbiz just learn the language in tw and their english speaking skills are not very fluent...while some actually go to the western countries to learn, or some were actually born/grew up there.
HKasiangurl
yea, i agree. Like Jacky from 183club, Vanness Wu, Leon Williams, they have a good accent going there. But for the rest who claimed that they know english, i would say they can speak conversationally and get pass by it but i can definitely hear the taiwanese accent within it. By the way, is Leon Williams an ABC?
FayFayJL
almost none can.....in da series.....well eyah...vannes can..and so can the two guys in green forest...william and...that ceo guy
*LeeH*
Vaness Wu of F4 when he went here in the Philippines... He didnt need to have an interpreter because he speaks English fluently...
dadalin
There are a lot of them who can speak english....but i will try to list only the fluent ones who do not have fob accents...

Vaness...Leehom....Machi bros Jeff and Stanley...Will Pan....Fan Fan & her BF Black Man....Jason
saturn_star
There are few Chinese celebrities who can speak fluent English but I think Daniel Wu speaks the most fluent....He could barely speak Mandarin (not sure if it's Mandarin or other)...other than him I think Edison Chen, maybe Nicholas Tse, Vanness Wu, and Angela Zhang...are good English speakers...
cherry_dreams
Jolin!! her English is good but her speaking still has the mandarian accent!! Lee Hom and Wilber since they are ABC and Jacky( 183 club) since he is born is vancover
#Chili Stock Market#
Wilbur is gud....i think Jacky from 183club can speak really gud english...Lee HOm definitely...and Vanness is pretty gud...but most of these tw celebrities grew up in like Eng speakin countries...or at least stayed there for a long time.
sfoam
I know Lee Hom, Wilber Pan, Coco Lee and Vanness can. And that's about it..
jo-lucky
so far i know:
Lee hom, vanness wu(f4), jacky zhu (183 Club), wilber pan, machi, david tao, jolin, elva, leon, angela chan, peter ho, they all can speaks fluent English.

like: ren fu, jason, sam, ming dao, johhny yan, may be they know english but not really good, cause when they go in other country, they still need to have an interpreter.
Lililasoh1
I only know three Taiwanese actors who speak english without any accent..or any noticeable such. Lee Hom and Leon Jay Williams, and that guy who plays Brian in Green Forest My Home, whatever his name is..
MADE IN HEAVEN
Alot of taiwanese artists are fluent in English. But that don't mean they don't speak with an accent. But those that were born and raised in America, like Lee Hom, Wilber Pan, Coco Lee, Jacky from 183 club...speak perfect english. = ]
vicvicbarbie
lee hom very well in English. I heard his english many times, he is pretty gud

Wait!! Jolin has an ENGLISH major??? T____T No offense or anything, most Taiwanese people who claim they speak English, has a really weird accents! Like you can understand them, but it's NOT the way to pronounce the word! xD That makes me sooooooo angry!

Anyways, back to Jolin--- I can't believe that!! xD Her english sounds horrible [in her songs]! Like sometimes you don't understand waht she's saying!! For example the song, "Goodbye" there are these words "I know that this time we gotta say goodbye..." It toook me SOOOOOOOOOOO long to finally understand waht she meant! x]

*shruggs* Then again, someone might be considered "fluent" if you know how to speak in English, regardless of the way you pronounce it in Taiwan!

But fluent also means "reading & writing" can most Taiwanese born people do that? So far the only ones I know are the American born or raised.
lilwitch
I think the best english speaker is wilbur pan, pan wei bo
However, wills cousin, Jason can speak too
sweetcandeeh
the person with the BEST english skills is Lee Hom, its so perfect..
One of the worst i reckon is unfortunatly jolin and cyndi... they are quite badd...
A new canto girl called Janice is ok.. she has a little accent but still ok
Chun Zai
does anyone know if rainie yang speaks english well? i think i heard her speak it before with Leon Jay Williams.

anyways, i think there are only like a hand full of people who can speak/write/read english perfectly.... the three that comes to mind are Wang Lee Hom, Leon Jay Williams, and Coco Lee. For those who are unsure about coco.... i saw her in an interview on a morning talk show (The View i think, dont really remember) in the US promoting her english album "Just No Other Way" a while back.... her english was perfect!

just noticed that there are more male english speakers than female!

I wouldn't say most, but I would settle for many.

The last time I checked, Vickie was set to go back to school starting the term that begins in September 2005 at University of California, San Diego, for her psychology degree (my source for this information is reliable). As for Michelle, someone told me she already completed her studies at a college-level music school several years ago (my source for this information may be incorrect).

Haha, it's funny that there's a thread on this...reminds me of the time I was watching some F4 concert clips on youtube.com. I think it was a concert in the Philippines and Vaness had the other 3 guys say something to the crowd (in English). Whatever Ken said was passable, and then ZaiZai only said "I love you" so that was fine. But then it was Jerry's turn and he says "I NEED YOU" to the fans and I was like...uhhh, "I need you?" That's pretty random lol. It was soo weird and he looked so embarrassed saying it. Hehe...

Oh and yeah, ppl mentioned it before but I gotta agree that Ambrose speaks English really well. I'm watching At the Dolphin Bay right now and when he says stuff in English, it's practically perfect.

hehe, that's funny about the Jerry thing!!! loool.gif I can just imagine him saying it!! ^^

As for Ambrose, he was raised in the US, so it's no wonder his english is perfect!! On the other hand, his Chinese is well.... very Americanized and sometimes hard to make out! xD But he's def. one of my fav. actors!

Haha, I was just watching that. It was so funny when he couldn't say "pick" and kept trying to say "pink." After watching the first clip for a while, I gotta say... Jolin has a really good American accent. She's got the slang right and everything.
eternityxdream
i kno vanness is fluent in english...when he talked in english with that guy in dragon squad...he doesnt sound like he have an accent...
