China's most popular actress, Zhang Ziyi, will play the lover of the red-faced general, Guan Yu, in the upcoming project, Green Dragon Saber.

The martial arts epic, to be directed by Li Shaohong, is adapted from real events in the life of the great figure Guan Yu, who lived during the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history.

Guan Yu (160-219AD), also called Guan Gong in Mandarin, lived at the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220). He served as a general to Liu Bei, who founded the Kingdom of Shu, which was centered on Chengdu in west China's Sichuan province.

Taiwan actor, Takeshi Kaneshivo, will play the lead role of Guan Yu, making this the second time the two international stars will play lovers on the big screen, following their previous turn in the award winning film House of Flying Daggers.

The film is scheduled to commence shooting in the middle of the year.

This movie sound very interesting. Eveytime I think of Guan i think of an older character. It would be refreshing to see Takeshi Kaneshivo play this character.

Takeshi: As much as i love him.. he is too lean anf frail. Guan Yu was known to be a big man, 6 ft, and tall, built to wield the blue dragon sword.

guan gong gives me d impression of a big strong general who's skilled in martial arts...i don't think takeshi kaneshiro has that resemblance.

I seriously cannot see Takeshi as Guan Yu. This movie is going to turn out as a joke, The Three Kingdoms period was one where (sworn/whatver) brothers were more important than women and offspring. It's ridiculous to even portray Guan Yu's love interest as anything important.

It seems that Zhang Ziyi returns to her roots (again) in the world of martial arts.. But i wonder as a lover, will she be engaged in martial arts action in this film? Hopefully she does cos' it's wonderful to see her fighting.

hope this turns out. This has the potential to truly become a spectacular movie.
What with all the possible costumes and battle scenes, this should be really fun to watch.

seems like she's always making movies in other time periods, and hence, always in costume

interesting story and I think she and Takeshi look great together on screen. Too bad it's another ancient drama. Would like to see them in a modern day movie.
