A Good Drama - The Hospital http://dear1dear2.wordpress.com/2007/01/31...a-the-hospital/
F4’s Jerry Yan is back! Heehee, I may be a bit slow, when Jerry’s latest drama The Hospital aka White Tower aka 白色巨塔 was already broadcasted in Taiwan in mid 2006, but watching just 2 episodes of the drama has made Dear2 appluad this fantastic production and which gives me something to look forward to. (I simply groused out of the plot of The Peak, now showing on TV8, 9pm; so cheesy!! Don’ t you have the de ja vu feeling of a familiar plot once again - complicated love relationships, mysteriously too-frequent accidents, and that irritating rowdy aunties and uncles. Do Singaporeans really only know to speak loudly and get into arguments all the time?? Cannot understand. Probably the most interesting aspect of the series is the peek into the workings of a shipyard, cos afterall, how many of us have stepped into one before? But the plot and skills of the actors/ actresses…….. *Shake head shake head*)
The Hospital is definitely much more interesting. How I miss the captivating of one’s heart at the end of each episode, when you just want to continue watching to know what will happen next, ie, a cliff hanger. Unfortunately again, this kind of allure has longed ceased from our local productions. Struggles for power, lives hanging on the line, love affairs, medical malpractice decisions, all these are simultaneosly happening at the same which keeps you glued to the screen. Hee, of course, a pretty face as Jerry’s gives more incentive for the anticipation.
2 episodes down, 37 more to go. Let me enjoy this wonderful bliss before resigning to our cannot-make-it local programs again.- Dear2

Review of The HospitalThe Hospital will be screening on Channel U from February onwards.
I'm reviewing on The Hospital, all these are solely typed by me, and sorry for any poor vocabularies.
The Hospital:
Who? - Jerry Yan Cheng Xu as Su Yi Hua(外科医生)
Jerry Yan continues to dominate the industry once again after his debut on Meteor Gardens. Being one of the F4 members, he is believed to be the most popular and highest paid among them, followed by ZaiZai, Vanness, and Xiao Tian.
From a bad-boy role "Dao Ming Shi" who goes around bullying people to a doctor role who saves people, its a 180 degree new challenge.
Fortunately, Jerry Yan didn't disappoint me. He is able to act his role well. I'm touched by one scene when he cried terribly, it happened very naturally. By the way, he sang the theme song for The Hospital - Ni Shi Wo Wei Yi De Zhi Zhuo.
Yi Hua is a upright doctor who has high medical skills. He was asked to treat the President's daughter. Did he manage to cure her? However, his superior, Guo Tai keeps making things diffcult for him.
Who? - Guan Xin(麻醉科医生)She has that clean and pleasant looks that guys will go ga-ga for. However, in the whole drama, she weeped in almost all episodes. She just couldn't forget her ex-boyfriend and made her current relationship with Jerry complicated.
She might be a failure in love, but in work, she rises to high rank very fast. Did she ended up with Jerry? Or with someone else?
Who? - Dai Li Ren as Qiu Fu(外科副主任)The first time I saw him was on Mars, a drama by ZaiZai and Da S. He was a biker like ZaiZai, but met accident and made him handicap for life. He thus gave his bike to ZaiZai, and ZaiZai uses it for competition. In Mars, he is a super ordinary actor to me. But in The Hospital, everything changed.
Out of the main leads in The Hospital, I think he acted the most naturally. Watch as he goes through success to failure, and how he bounce back to success again in the show. However, he lost someone precious to him. I'm stunned by that someone. Wondering who is it? Catch The Hospital on Channel U. Its out on VCD too.
Who? - Wu Meng Da as Tang Guo Tai(外科主任)Anyone who watches Zhou Xin Chi's movie should know him. They always acted together in pairs for comedies. However, in this show, no comedy is involved at all. Power is involved instead. Guo Tai keeps making things difficult for Yi Hua(Jerry) as he afraid he might take over him someday. However, his biggest enemy was Da Ming. He is superior in terms of his position, but his abusal of power led him to a state of despair, where those who used to be loyal to him betray him in the end.
Who? - Zhang Guo Zhu as Xu Da Ming(内科主任)Xu Da Ming and Tang Guo Tai are bent to get rid of each other. Who win? Let Xu Da Ming and Tang Guo Tai bring you to a power-abuse world.
Who? - Sara as President's daughterThe President's daughter who Jerry Yan was supposed to treat. Unfortunately, she was involved in many unsuccessful surgeries. Did she survived?
One Sentence: The Hospital will bring you to a new world full of power, betrayal, loyalty, love, hatred, happiness and sadness.
Ron's Point: 9/10.

Good news! Just received a phone call from a friend that Channel 18 Los Angeles started showing the White Tower!. Channel 18 is a major TV station in the LA and its neighboring areas, but does not comprise the bay area and San Francisco. This is no different with other TV stations like ABC and NBC, which requires no extra pay for view, but this TV station is special because it is multi-lingual, catering to American immigrants. Many area-based TV stations in San Francisco, New York or Washington have non-English programs . LA is concentrated with immigrant minority groups and has rather many TV stations compared to western channels. Channel 18 has Chinese, Korean and Japanese programs, including news, art features, soap operas but the time schedules are actually different. The 7-8 air time is considered the golden time slot, because there are many Chinese viewers.
But because this drama release has no English sub-titles, not many viewers outside the Chinese community can enjoy it, unlike other Korean and Japanese dramas of Channel 18 which all have English-subtitles. However, showing it in America is already a great victory, Moreover, Its only now that Channel 18 was really fast, and wishing everyone could see their hard work and Jerry's progress,

Yan Cheng Xu's (Jerry) lead drama "The Hospital" created a stir in Taiwan last year.
Originally planned to air this Spring in Japan, but was constantly delayed but finally determined to be shown on October over at Japan's NHK network which is also their inaugural venture into Chinese dramas. Jerry, through his manager Billy said, "I'm very happy."
The first Chinese drama in this channel. In order to keep up with Director Cai Yue Xun's demands, Jerry threw meticulous time and care in The Hospital. This year his name will be submitted for the Golden Bell nominations for Best Actor award, finally breaking away from his idol image, and use his strength as an actor. Recently, as there were good rumors that The Hospital will be shown over at NHK, Jerry and Janine, together with some of the main cast will all go to Japan to promote.
In the past, when NHK shown Bai Yong Jun's "Winter Sonata", it created the Korean Wave to all Japanese viewers. After Jerry attracted thousands of Japanese fans, this time, The Hospital will be the first Chinese serial to climb over at NHK, and to raise the peoples' interest to another higher level once again.

Jerry Yan uncovers the hospital's dark sides in "Bai Se Ju Ta"

Wu Meng Da portrays as Surgical Department Head, but because of an accident he unexpectedly lost the chance to be President.
Based on the original novel "Bai Se Ju Ta" of famous Taiwanese doctor-author Hong Wen Yong, it could be said that the
TV serial version, produced at a staggering cost of NT$4 million (approximately HK$960,000) for each episode, is a record Breaker in Taiwanese TV history. Jerry plays a medical department surgeon Dr. Su Yi Hua, who works among doctors who had motives in pursuing their own interests and launched a power struggle with a higher up Wu Meng Da. The director, aside from uncovering the real dark sides in a hospital setting, also conveyed another message: Everyone, please treasure your life.
Cant help but to praise Jerry for finally taking down his idol figure just for this drama. Also worthy to note is Dai Li Ren, his role is the twisted Dr. Qui Qing Cheng, in an illicit love affair with the TV reporter Ma Yi Fen but finally however, he paid a high price because of his ambition. This role required many intense feelings, but Dai Li Ren managed to come up with a detailed performance.

Armodon's Reviews
Friday, March 30, 2007
The Hospital/ 白色巨塔The Hospital is perhaps the greatest Taiwanese TV drama ever. This is definitely a top-notch production. With a star-studded cast and a great source material (the novel of the same name), the Hospital is great in every respect. While at first glance, this may seem to be a rip off ER or other such established medical shows, the Hospital is original in that it takes the good elements from previous medical dramas and runs with it. It is the ability of the producers to bring out these elements that make the Hospital truly unique.
The Hospital stars Jerry Yan, formerly of F4 glory and is directed by Tsai Yueh Hsun, who created the hugely successful Meteor Garden series. Yan's character is rising surgeon who gets caught up in the political strugle within the hospital that occurs as two department heads fight for the position of chief-of-staff. It is a vicious battle, with sacrifice and loss on both sides. Unwittingly, Yan's character is dragged deeper and deeper into the struggle, and soon he must choose a side. Adding to the confusion is a female coworker Yan has chased after for 10 years. As his personal and professional life become indistinguishable, Yan must decide what his real goals are and what he is willing to give up to realize them.
Political struggle is not something one would normally associate with a hospital, and it is amazing to see it realized on screen. The Hospital shows that such struggles are commonplace, in every aspect of life. They continue onwards, bringing forth a vicious cycle, as each succeeding generation is forced by the system to rise thru the ranks. As one of the characters say, that's the way the game works. In order to do what he wants, he must first amass power. And if sacrifices have to be made along the way, so be it. Such brutal executions bring forth many questionable judgements, and the audience will find that their ethical sense is challenged at every turn of the story. The surprising thing is that, as the audience gets to know the characters, it will appear that no one is wrong. There're winners and losers, but no one is right and no one is wrong. The two do not equate, and The Hospital exemplifies this beautifully. It is when the audience begins to take sides that the twists in the plotline prove all the more astonishing, and ultimately satisfying.
The characters in the story are all very dynamic. Each of them come alive, as they each strive toward their own clear purposes, with many of them changing their perspectives along the way. This great feat is achieved in part due to the spectacular acting. There are a lot of actors/actresses present, lending a greater feel to the story. There is never a point where the drama felt repetitive or slow, as is often the case with long dramas with a rather small cast (The Hospital is 39 episodes long). I was pleasantly surprised at the believable performances from the cast, which was helped in part by the small use of "young" talent. Contrary to Meteor Garden, where the entire staff seems to be under 30 and the acting was sub-par, The Hospital aims to be a serious drama, and it largely succeeds due to the realistic setting it employs. Other than the main actor/actress, the rest of the staff appears to be veterans, giving the drama solid production values. With an emphasis toward portraying human-human interactions in as realistic a manner as possible, the "sappy" feeling that may otherwise surround The Hospital does not exist. Although some viewers may find that this detracts from the romantic elements in the story, I find that the concentrated bursts is more akin to real life. Work doesn't take a break for personal relationships, and the two intertwine at the hospital where everyone works, creating a hotbed of drama potential waiting to be unlocked in the series.
One area I found disconcerting was the pace of time progression in the story. Many major events occur in short succession, and a change of scenery often indicates a passage of several months. This quick movement of time occurs throughout the series, making the story sometimes a little hard to swallow. Even as the characters all behave plausibly in their life, the situations that crop up are not entirely so. This is noticeable many times, as important characters move on in the story. While one would expect them to return at some point, the story seemingly abandons them and continues on with the remaining cast. Thus, sometimes the drama does seem to get carried away, trying too hard to distinguish itself, to be different, to be captivating at all times, with no dull moments. This actually creates the opposite effect at times.
But these are little concerns in relation to the entire production. The Hospital is a great drama series that is well worth watching, if only to reach the end and understand the overall themes and morals being expressed throughout the story. The Hospital does not try to answer questions about life; it merely raises them. That is perhaps its greatest asset - it tends to ask the right ones.
Pros: Great depiction of the inherent struggle in life; great acting all around; good message
Cons: Some elements that are not entirely fleshed out; not for those wanting a mindless show (especially the younger crowd)
Conclusion: This should be on everyone's must-watch list
Score: 4.5/5

I'm not a fan of Taiwanese dramas; Neither am I a fan of F4 nor Jerry Yan. But I'm hooked on The Hospital - 白色巨塔 on Channel U at 7.30pm every weekend. (fatty2 : Channel U of Singapore).
Based on an adaptation of the same book written by Taiwanese author Hou Wen Yong, the story about complicated relationships between corrupted doctors in a hospital is real intriguing.
The series is nothing typical of the usual soapbox auntie dramas. Instead there're a lot of stylish camera angles. The characters are natural with every scene done with good depth. It's an exceptional Taiwanese production.
You just have to catch it.

Seeing {The Hospital} reflects humanity, how my heart aches on occasion. Each sentence of the dialogue easily points out the truths in Reality.
As seen, Life is most definitely like a show.
LIFE
I have lived here for almost 2 years and yet I don’t know any neighbours. I work every single day and I just keep on working. . . . . . A person like me who had spent most of my life studying, I have missed on spending time with my family. I don’t even have the energy to date. I don’t even know how to date someone. . . . . .
~ Su Yi Hua cried his eyes out when he was disappointed in love.
Where there is gain, there will be loss. There is no point complaining, what it boils down to is one’s personal choice.
.............................................................
Every one of us has to bear the burden of the mistakes we’ve made. We need to learn to live with our most unsightly-self. Because there are not reruns in Life and we are adults.
~ Qiu Qing Cheng pulls himself up from his mistakes and carries on.
You need courage as it’s difficult to face your own evils.
...............................................................
Tang : I deserve it. It’s like being bitten by the dog that I’ve fed. There is no need for other’s sympathies.
Su : . . . . . .I don’t understand it. I held it tightly in my hands yet why does it suddenly cool off so quickly. . . . . .
Tang : These are the rules- mere rules. The fault is not his neither is it mine.
~ Forced by circumstances, Tang Guo Tai and Qiu Cheng Qing turned from a teacher-student relationship to enemies.
Good and bad, kindness and wickedness never existed in the arena of fame and fortune.
..................................................................
I don’t believe that there isn’t any truth and justice in this world. It’s all because we have in our hearts given up.
~ Guan Xin still holds true to her principles.
For humans, the one that is the hardest to believe is in fact we ourselves.
....................................................................
As you age, you will find that Destiny has made the decision for you one after and another right before your eyes. One by one, it eats into you. What choice is there left for you? Life is just so. When you’ve reached a certain point, you can’t turn back anymore.
~ When all is gone, Zhuang Ming Zhe came to this realization.
At times when certain things happen, I asked myself, I had considered all angles, did my best in where I should, I feel that there shouldn’t be any problems. It should all be great but it might not be so.With a flick of the fingers from the Heavens, it becomes different. Everything will not be the same anymore.
~ Qiu Qing Cheng fell from grace and finally saw through everything.
Can Destiny be changed? In fact, it’s actually the person making up lies to force himself to move forward.
.....................................................................
Su : If you are right, I definitely will stand on your side and support you fully.
Qiu : Don’t you know that you are already standing on my side? When I step down, you will have the opportunity to crawl up. You can then have more power to do what you think is right.
~ Though Su Yi Hua thinks he is righteous but Qiu Qing Cheng pointed out to him how he is in fact steep in the power struggle.
All of us think we are virtuous in our own right but in the end we have to go with the flow of things.
................................................................................
True courage is pursuing that kind of simple happiness. . . . . .When we are doing what we think we should, Heaven is but a place where our hands can reach. If you want Happiness, you have on be undaunted in stretching your hand to do what you want to and to love the one whom you love the most. Don’t wait as it’s just that you didn¡’t see it for Happiness never left you.
~ Dr Guan's letter to Dr Su.
Our lives are based on what we believe. Happiness, sadness, they are all choices.
.....................................................................
In the end, what we think is important has become not important after all.
~ Su Yi Hua¡’s take on Life.
Nothing which is lost would cost anyone his life. Riches is so, people are so.
LOVE
What everyone wants in their lives is different, it won’t be the same just because the both of you are together.
~ Her superior, Chang Yi Ru tries hard to persuade Ma Yi Fen about her illicit affair with Qiu Qing Cheng.
Love many a times cannot really withstand the trials of reality again and again.
.....................................................................
We do not owe each other anything now. We owe each other only a simple goodbye.
~ Ma Yi Fen bade farewell to Qiu Qing Cheng at the Airport.
After having loved and hated, there is the eventual letting go when Fate is over.
......................................................................
Your cleverness always hurt others so much.
~ Upon knowing of Qiu Qing Cheng’s affair with Ma Yi Fen, his wife, Mei Qian’s words struck a tender spot as she wanted to safeguard her family’s Happiness.
When one is too clever, he will only remember how to love himself and forget to love others.
.......................................................................
Humans can only head towards one direction and it is the same for every one of us.
~ Guan Xin’s objective view as a bystander of Su Yi Hua’s change of heart and refusal to face the fact.
Love will unknowingly change its direction in event of the pursuit of fame and fortune .
.........................................................................
Don’t say that you are sorry. You will never ever know how sorry you should be. It’s too late, all too late.
~ Guan Xin’s words to the heartless Zhuang Ming Zhe.
Words are a mere softening of the guilt towards victims but they can never lessen the hurt.
........................................................................
In the past, I thought that as long as we loved each other then nothing is impossible but Love is not so great. It is never as great as we think it should be.
~ Guan Xin left behind these words when Su Yi Hua tried to get her back.
A Love to live and die for is in truth too inconsequential.
........................................................................
Su: Do you really not want to give me an explanation for your leaving?
Guan: Don’t you think what we need now is not an explanation but a wholehearted blessing?
~ For so many years, Guan Xin left without a word but eventually met up with Su Yi Hua for their final farewell.
Rather than holding onto regret, the beauty is in remembering the Love.
~ THE END ~

On The Hospital replay, strong emotions to re-appear over the netSource: United Daily News

summary by Jerry's Kingdom
The Hospital is nominated for 8 categories for the Golden Bell Awards. Starting tonight and every week Thursdays at 9:30 pm, the viewers will judge in its replay, in a safer time slot different from its original 8 pm airing, with no cuts.
In its first broadcast, because of those sex scenes between Leon Dai and Cheryl Yang in an office, as well as the naked back of Ding Ning shown in a bed scene, NCC slapped $180,000 fine to the producers. According to reports, those scenes had been cut because of it. Now, with the 9:30 pm time slot, it might be the complete uncut version.
The Hospital spent $80 million to finish, 9 months of filming, and male leads Jerry Yan and Leon Dai as well as female lead Janine Zhang has to undergo workshops before filming, to know surgical procedures inside the operating room, wear surgical clothes, hold the surgical tools, practice surgical incision and handling tumor out of the patient's stomach, etc.
This time, as the announcement of the drama group's nominations to the Golden Bell Awards came, it changed to a different color. Wu Meng Da, who played the role of a Surgical Department Director, had already relayed to the drama group that he would come to Taiwan for the awards night and celebrate with them.

hi jeunn! welcome to the TH thread. hmm, as i promised i'm working on my summary of TH for you. give me a few days but to answer your questions at the moment, here:
have Dr. Su and lady doc(Dr. Guan Xin) known each other from before, even before they became doctors?
- yes, they have. she and Dr. Su were actually med school sweethearts. In ep7 when they were eating out in that bar, they talked a little about their past.
does she not reciprocate Yi Hua's feelings for her?
- well considering they had gone out before, we could say she had some feelings for him as well. but things changed between them when just before they get their license as doctors, Su Yi Hua went to serve in the military(in Taiwan, it is mandatory for all male without any medical problems) and while he was away, Guan Xin fell in love with her professor, Dr. *** Ming Zhe(usher, i too cant remember his whole name at the moment). anyways, jeunn, watch ep7 again and that man she was thinking after reading Yi Hua's letter was that guy. as usher explained, Guan Xin's oldest sister was very sick at that time and she found comfort in the arms of this man. in the end, this doctor also leaves guan xin to marry a hospital owner's daughter and all to secure his future. but the most tragic part of it all is Guan Xin is actually pregnant at that time. without her lover, guan xin opts for abortion. so after all she went thru, guan xin became cold to everyone to "guard" against them from finding out her dark secrets. of course she is most cold to su yi hua because she feels guilty for him too.
hehe. i am tempted to say my own opinions of thye guan xin-su yi hua love story but usher is right. we shouldn'r influence your own thoughts. anyways, we'll all have fun exchanging opinions after you've finished the series.

this is the way i understood it. please correct me if im wrong (not chinese...darn)
dr su and guan xin are old sweethearts from med school... if not in an official relationship...they were in some sort of mutual understanding of each others affection. dr. su after graduating served in the military. 2 years. during the separation. gx had some struggles of her own (which i am not very familiar...but i read her sister or a sibling was in icu and was at a critical condition..) during that time of weakness...she became close with his professor...whose name in the series i forgot ... but you will notice him initially from GX flash backs until he finally returns...his real name is FEI XIANG (his old handsome). so while dr su was alone and lonely and missing gx in the sea.... gx and his professor was in a relationship.... dr su....unfortunately ..doesnt know that
If dr su's love is reciprocated or not? that has been a point of argument by a lot... and it is for you to figure it out yourself... i do have my opinion on the matter.... but i dont want to influence you and would want you to have your own conclusion...at the end ...we will exchange notes.... ok.
angel leigh.... help me out here....
jeunn...watching th without understanding everything can really be difficult esp those scenes without jerry in it.... but every episode is vital to understand why is this and that....the latter part where majority are of Dr su moments...not knowing chinese wont even be an hindrance...it will just melt your heart.Thank you so much usher01rivera. I knew I can count on you and also angel_leigh. I am so grateful to the both of you for being so nice to give me a brief summary of this series. Take your time angel_leigh I will sit tight for your upcoming updates. And thank you for your warm welcome.

jeunn, here's the summary for TH that i promised you. i'm sorry if it's long, i couldn't stop being specific to some scenes. hehe.
The story starts when the daughter of the Taiwanese president, Liu Xin Ping is admitted to the Laio Da University Hospital secondary to Acute Leukocythemia(Leukemia). Her primary physician, internist Dr. Xu Da Ming, asks the help of surgeon Su Yi Hua to implant ‘Port A’(a central vein tube system that could be used to help decrease pain for Xin Ping during chemotherapy) into Xin Ping. This team-up made Surgery Department Director, Dr. Tang Guo Tai, feel threaten because the selection for the new Executive Director of the hospital is coming up and Xu Da Ming(who is actually Director of Internal Medicine) is his rival for the position. To prevent Xu Da Ming from getting all the glory of treating the president’s daughter, Dr. Tang assigns Assistant Director of Surgery, Dr. Qiu Qing Chen to operate Xin Ping on his(Dr. Tang’s) behalf. Robbed off his patient, Dr. Su doesn’t feel one bit of resentment; as long as the patient is fine, he is happy. But when he visits Xin Ping, he finds her with slight fever ruling a possibility of a post-operative infection. He even suspects that there is blot clot formed after the operation and he fears that it could cause fatal consequences especially since Xin Ping’s undergoing chemotherapy. But he then tries bringing up the topic to both Dr. Tang and Dr. Qiu, Dr. Tang was quick to brush his suspicions off. More worried than ever because Dr. Tang wouldn’t even hear him out, Dr. Su tries to employ the help of Xin Ping’s other doctors. But instead of helping him out, Dr. Xu only tells Su Yi Hua that if his suspicions are wrong “celebrate for Xin Ping” but if he is correct, “celebrate for him.” Not comprehending Dr. Xu’s words, Su Yi Hua then goes to the anesthesiologist during the operation, Dr. Guan Xin. He confides his concerns to her but she herself was facing a huge issue at that time and she only snaps at him. She tells him that he shouldn’t concern over Xin Ping as she is no longer his patient; she even mocks him by saying maybe he is only interested in Xin Ping because she is the daughter of the president(this happens in ep5, jeunn if you want, you should watch it again. Su Yi Hua’s shocked and hurt look is so sad to see).
Meanwhile, Guan Xin’s problem starts after her patient, Zhu Hui Ying, died during a simple operation; she is then accused by the patient’s family of medical malpractice/negligence. Guan Xin is firm though in saying she did everything a doctor ought to do and the death was a freak accident. Still the patient’s lover insists that Guan Xin pay them damages for 8,000,000NT. Guan Xin refuses to make such an agreement and suggests instead to let the hospital do an official autopsy on the patient’s body as to find out the real cause of death. The surgeon for this operation, Dr. Huang(who is also the Dean of the hospital’s university) fears an autopsy as he feels the tragedy could be actually his fault. He then sent Dr. Qiu(the closest doctor Guan Xin could call a friend) to try to talk Guan Xin out of her autopsy suggestion. Guan Xin, believing as doctors that it is their responsibility to find out the truth, doesn’t change her mind. And even when her department’s director, Dr. Lai Cheng Xu(sent by Dr. Tang who wanted to help Dr. Huang to secure votes on his favor) tries to hand her the compensation amount of 8,000,000NT(the money is from Dr. Tang and his ‘illegal’ dealings), Guan Xin is firm on her decision for an autopsy. Finally, the patient’s mother accepts her proposal and with the autopsy, it is found out that the accident happened because of Dr. Huang and not Dr. Guan. Though she was angry at first, the patient’s mother finally understands that Dr. Huang did his best for her daughter. She also realized that Dr. Huang should not be condemned for a single mistake so she didn’t push for lawsuit. She then asks Dr. Huang to give her son-in-law the 4,000,000 and then donate her half of the money to the hospital’s children’s ward. Grateful, Dr. Huang goes to this patient’s grave to pay his respects and say his apologies to her.
In the meantime, Dr. Su continues to persist on helping out Xin Ping. One night, he tries to take out the implanted ‘Port A’ on her. Dr. Qiu stops him just in time but he finally accepts that Xin Ping is becoming worse and so he sends her to the ICU. But even with intense medical care 24/7, Xin Ping’s condition only continues to worsen. A pressured Dr. Qiu finally decides to follow Dr. Su’s plan to take out the implanted ‘Port A’ on Xin Ping; together, Dr. Su and Dr. Qiu operate on Xin Ping which of course angered Dr. Tang. Then as director of surgical department, Dr. Tang uses is power to intimidate everyone into alienating Dr. Su. All of the other surgeons and even the surgery nursing staff refuse to help Su Yi Hua in any of his operations(only Surgery Ward Chief Nurse Kang Wen Li remained loyal to Dr. Su). This of course poses as a problem as some of Dr. Su’s patients need immediate treatment; one of these patients, Zhang Jian(a man who had been involved in a car accident with his wife) goes into a medical emergency and needs to be operated at once but still no doctor wanted to help him operate. In desperation, Dr. Su decides to swallow his principles and apologize to Dr. Tang but just in time, junior surgeon, Dr. Hao Xiao Gang steps in to help him out. Dr. Hao had decided to help Dr. Su after Wen Li tells him that she has no respect for a man like him(you see jeunn, Dr. Kang is in love with Wen Li but she only likes Dr. Su). The operation is a success but Dr. Hao is still punished for helping Dr. Su; Dr. Tang reassigns him to a small clinic in the mountains. Angered, Dr. Su wanted to face against Dr. Tang after this but Dr. Hao stops him, saying he didn’t mind being a doctor in the mountains. Meanwhile, Xin Ping still hadn’t improved completely and the president shows great disapproval; he even orders that his daughter was to be transferred into another hospital if she didn’t get better. But just in time, she began to get better especially after Dr. Xu Da Ming gave her some treatment. After a few more days, Xin Ping recovered fully and she was finally discharged from the hospital. She then goes one-by-one to her doctors to thank them and bid them farewell; the one she gave Su Yi Hua was most dramatic though. Thru her words, she hints at him that she has feelings for him.
While all these were happening, Guan Xin and Su Yi Hua who had been sweethearts from med school got to resolve their relationship. They were able to reconcile after Su Yi Hua showed so much comfort and support for Guan Xin’ during her problem with the issue of medical negligence. They almost didn’t get back together though as Guan Xin accidentally saw her former lover; realizing she couldn’t move on from all the pain and doubts of the past, she began to be indifferent towards Yi Hua again. Confused with her actions, Dr. Su begged at her, telling her how much she meant to him and pleading with her to confide what was going on with her. Filled with guilt and regret, Guan Xin broke down and yelled the truth at him: that while he was in the military, she cheated on him and fell in love with someone else and that was why she broke up with him years ago. Even though his heart had been broken, Yi Hua was very professional and kept his pain all to himself. But on the night of Dr. Hao’s send-off party, Yi Hua got very drunk and he cried out all his frustrations(that he was a person who did nothing but work and he had no real friends, no real relationships). Then mistaking Wen Li for Guan Xin, he took her into his embrace; and then begging her not to leave him, he even kissed her. The next day, Su Yi Hua feels all awkward around Wen Li but she then reassures him that they should not let what happened bother them as they are both adults(even though it was not stated directly, apparently, they ended up sleeping together too). Wen Li even encouraged Dr. Su to try work things out with Guan Xin. Su Yi Hua then followed her advice and went to tell Guan Xin that he doesn’t care about the past and all he wanted was to start fresh with her. With that, the old sweethearts finally really got back together. Meanwhile, Wen Li consented with going out with Dr. Hao.
The next part of the story starts with the wrath of Dr. Tang falling upon Dr. Su and Dr. Qiu. First, he denies the fund grant Dr. Su was asking for his research. But while Dr. Tang gives Dr. Su a hard time, he is offered a job in a small hospital in the province. Being doctors in the province was actually their dream when they were med students, so Dr. Su first went to ask Guan Xin if she would go with him; when she agrees, they decides to go together. Dr. Su then goes to prepare for his resignations. Meanwhile, Dr. Qiu who had always been in Dr. Tang’s good side is having troubles coping with his superior’s anger. One day though, Dr. Qiu, who also worked part-time on a small family hospital, is offered an administrative position by Dr. Chen Ting(owner of a small family hospital). Dr. Chen even tries to hand Dr. Qiu money in return for Dr. Qiu’s voting in favor of Dr. Chen Kuan’s(Chen Ting’s son; he is Dr. Su’s friend who wears glasses) upcoming evaluation. This evaluation would help determine whether Chen Kuan would be promoted as a professor in the Liao Da University Hospital. Dr. Qiu takes the money(it was later returned by his wife though) and position but he intentionally misses the board meeting of Chen Kuan’s evaluation. (I’m not sure but I think Dr. Qiu did this because Dr. Tang didn’t like neither Chen Ting and Chen Kuan; I think Dr. Qiu thought that if he did this, he would get back to Dr. Tang’s good side). And though there were two other doctors who were given bribes by Dr. Chen Ting, during the meeting they got intimidated by Dr. Tang and in the end, only Su Yi Hua voted for Kuan.
Anyway, the announcement of the new Executive Director happens a few days later and the position is given to Dr. Xu Da Ming. Dr. Tang receives the news while he was in the middle of a surgery and probably because of shock and disbelief, Dr. Tang suffers stroke immediately after. Then because of his illness, Dr. Tang had to be replaced as head of Surgery Department and though Dr. Qiu, as the assistant director, should be the likely choice, he felt Dr. Xu might not give him the position as he was after all been Dr. Tang’s follower. Dr. Qiu who was actually very ambitious himself was determined to be the next Surgery Director and so he went to Xu Da Ming, and tells him in direct and no-nonsense words that he was willing to work under him from now on. Dr. Xu seems delighted with this and promises him the position of Surgery Department Director. But while Dr. Qiu had easily shifted sides to Dr. Xu, Dr. Tang found sympathy from the very person he had been most cruel to, Su Yi Hua. Even after everything, Dr. Su holds much respect to Dr. Tang as he had been his mentor/professor.
As the new Executive Director, Dr. Xu makes some changes in the hospital. One is when he takes Dr. Lai Cheng Xu(also a follower of Dr. Tang) out of his position as Anesthesiology Department Director. This resulted when Dr. Qiu(under the orders of Dr. Xu) exposed Dr. Lai’s illegal dealings with the department’s drugs. Without Dr. Lai, the position of Anesthesiology Department Director goes to Guan Xin. Dr. Xu also rejects Su Yi Hua’s resignation(he contacted the hospital in the province and asked them to withdraw their offer to Dr. Su) and he appoints him as the surgery department’s new assistant director.
Even though their plans were changed, at this point we see Yi Hua and Xin getting closer and closer; and even though, Guan Xin still can’t completely break free from her past, she and Su Yi Hua were doing their best to make their relationship work. The next few events that happens changed so much for them though. One night, a woman who attempted suicide was admitted to the hospital and Guan Xin is shocked to see her because she is the lady who her ex-lover married. With tears flowing down her eyes, Guan Xin finds herself face-to-face with her old love, Dr. Zhuang Ming Zhe. Meanwhile that very night, Su Yi Hua is invited over to a dinner to Xu Da Ming’s house. But it all turns out to be an excuse for Dr. Xu to introduce Su Yi Hua to his daughter. Of course Dr. Su felt awkward with the matching-up but he relaxes after finding out Cui Feng is actually secretly seeing someone already. Cui Feng asks a favor of him though, she wants him to be her ‘cover-up’ whenever she had to go meet her boyfriend Stephen. Yi Hua could only laugh amusedly at her antics.
Over the next few days, Guan Xin keeps on secretly seeing Ming Zhe. He had explained to her how his marriage isn’t a happy one and how much he had missed her. But though Guan Xin tried to reject him at first, she seemed incapable of pulling away from him after he holds her and kisses her. One night, Yi Hua visits Guan Xin and is surprised to find Ming Zhe in her apartment. He recognizes Zhuang as their professor from med school and with pain written all over his face, he realizes that Ming Zhe must be Guan Xin’s love from before.
The next day, a remorseful Guan Xin goes to Yi Hua, asking that he give her some time to think over what she wanted. Broken hearted once more, Yi Hua only tells Guan Xin that he was willing to wait for her. Days later, Guan Xin finally makes a decision; she first goes to meet Ming Zhe. But she only thanked him for coming back into her life because now she has found the closure she couldn’t have before. Ming Zhe, though obviously sadden by her decision, accepts it. The next morning, Guan Xin then goes to talk to Yi Hua. She confesses the whole truth to him, saying how she was pregnant before and the how she decides to get an abortion; she adds that Yi Hua should hate/forget her. But Yi Hua stops her and reassures her that the past didn’t matter to him anymore. He adds that if it’ll make her feel better, she should promise that in their next lives, she should be the one to love him. She should promise that no matter how much he pushed her away, she would chase after him. Touched by his words, Guan Xin throws herself into his arms and hugging him tightly, Guan Xin promises him that he would never ever leave him again. . .
But while everything is finally going well for Dr. Su, Dr. Qiu’s career and family are put in jeopardy. The two people he had wronged before were getting their revenge against him. Dr. Chen Ting conspired to get him into trouble by exposing how he takes bribes from his patients. The other person trying to get revenge on Dr. Qiu is Ma Yi Fen. She is his mistress who he had impregnated. Ms. Ma is hurt how Dr. Qiu had easily wanted her to abort their child. She is even more saddened after finding out how much Dr. Qiu adores his daughter, Xiao Mei. In the end, she gets back at him by being the reporter who exposed the bribery issue Dr. Chen Ting had put up. She also goes to Mei Qin, Dr. Qiu’s wife, to tell her about her husband’s infidelity. At first after finding out about her husband’s betrayal, Mei Qin wanted to leave Dr. Qiu but she took pity on him and helped him resolve the issue brought up by Chen Ting. She even found a way to blackmail Dr. Xu Da Ming(apparently lots of doctors take bribes and Dr. Xu is guilty of it as well). In the end, Dr. Xu couldn’t fire Dr. Qiu but even when he was able to retain his job as surgeon and professor of the hospital, he is taken out of the position of surgery director and is replaced by Dr. Su Yi Hua.
By this time, Xu Cui Feng had broken up with her boyfriend and had fallen in love with Su Yi Hua. This shouldn’t have caused any problems for Dr. Su’s relationship at all(at this point, he doesn’t seem to realize Cui Feng’s feelings) but Dr. Qiu’s words had put grave fears in Guan Xin’s heart. Dr. Qiu told Guan Xin that Xu Da Ming wished to have Su Yi Hua as his son-in-law. As Executive Director and his son-in-law as Surgery Department Director, it would be a ‘perfect balance of power.’ Though it didn’t seem as Dr. Qiu intentionally said this to put problems for Yi Hua(he only resented Dr. Xu) but his words really affected Guan Xin. She couldn’t stop from thinking then that what happened between her and Ming Zhe before was happening again between her, Cui Feng and Yi Hua. Her doubts grow even more especially after she witnessed Cui Feng’s affections for Yi Hua.
Meanwhile, Dr. Su is actually not comfortable with his new position; he tells Guan Xin that he feels something is missing. Then turning to her, he asks her to marry him. But she could only cry and tell him she is not the one for him and adds that the past is repeating. Comprehending she meant Cui Feng, Yi Hua tries to reassure her, telling her that he was willing to give up his position as director and professor, if she would only agree to come to him live in the province and be his wife. But even when he continued to beg at her, Guan Xin didn’t change her mind. The next day, she resigns from the hospital and leaves for the province without a single word to Yi Hua. For days after, a broken hearted Dr. Su keeps trying to reach Guan Xin; meanwhile he also begins to avoid Cui Feng.
Before Yi Hua could even recover from his pain though, another tragedy strikes Su Yi Hua when his best friend Chen Kuan is diagnosed with colon cancer. Dr. Su himself operates on Dr. Chen but the tumor is already on its terminal stages. A dying Chen Kuan then confesses to Dr. Su how his dad had planned blackmail Yi Hua with pictures of him and a hooker(Chen Ting had feared Su Yi Hua wouldn’t vote for Chen Kuan for the evaluation before; ironically Dr. Su had been the only one to stand for Chen Kuan until the end during the evaluation). Though obviously hurt, Yi Hua accepts his friend’s apology. Chen Kuan then dies a few days later and on his burial, Dr. Qiu arrived to give Chen Ting a certification that states Chen Kuan has been accepted as a professor of the hospital. (I have no idea how this happens though; it may be that the evaluation is just one criteria to determine Chen Kuan’s promotion)
In the meantime, Xin Ping had been re-admitted to the hospital. Xin Ping, noticing the sadness in Yi Hua, tells him how he should ‘cherish’ what he has. She also manages to admit her feelings for him before she too dies.
The lost of his love, his best friend and his patient finally takes its toll on Yi Hua. Depressed, he drank away his misery and vented out his frustrations at Cui Feng. But though he pushed away at Cui Feng at first, in the end, he grabs at her and holds her tightly. But suddenly, he faints in her arms. . .
For next few days, Yi Hua is confined to the hospital; all the while when he is sick, Cui Feng does her best to make Yi Hua comfortable. She tried to cook for him and even did a puppet show to cheer him up. After he recovers, Dr. Su returns to work where he finds a ring on top of his desk. He then goes to look for Cui Feng. She only smiles at him and saying how she wants to always take care of him, she proposes to him. Touched with her words and remembering what Xin Ping told him to ‘cherish’ what he has, Yi Hua accepts to marry her. On their wedding day though, Yi Hua had to do an emergency operation and so he comes late. He tries to explain to Cui Feng but before he could start, she embraces him and tells him she already has everything - she need not be given this much happiness anymore. She adds that he should just forget everything that has happened and assures him she would be fine. Yi Hua stops at her from leaving though and tells her how he wants to grow old with her. He adds that he wants to always make her happy. Touched, Cui Feng returns his hug and the two are married. . .
A year then passes and we find Yi Hua changed. From the good-tempered doctor he had been, he has become like a shadow of Dr. Tang. And one day after finding out about Dr. Tang’s death Dr. Su becomes particularly moody during the operation, he even begins yelling at another doctor. This doctor(Dr. Qiao; he is taking some training lessons in the hospital) turns out to be Guan Xin’s husband-to-be. Seeing Guan Xin again brings back all the pain of the past and Yi Hua goes to talk to her. He couldn’t stop from asking her why she left him? Guan Xin only answers that it didn’t matter anymore, after all he himself is married now. But Dr. Su only says he wouldn’t have gotten married if she hadn’t left him. . .
Meanwhile, Dr. Su’s temper also puts problem for him and his wife. And now confused with Guan Xin’s return, Dr Su decides to leave home, simply stating in a note that he needed some time alone. Dr. Qiao, whose training would be ending soon, had sensed the tension between Guan Xin and Dr. Su and so he takes the initiative in giving Xin’s number to Dr. Su. Though he seem apprehensive at first, Yi Hua calls on Guan Xin and they meet. In this meeting Guan Xin finally admits that all that has happened between them was her fault. She confesses how she got scared and then she adds that the two of them should forget the past and move on completely. She also tells Yi Hua that ‘happiness’ had always been just in front of him, he should just try to see/appreciate/reach it. Then because she left without bidding him goodbye before, Guan Xin softly crying, bids farewell to Yi Hua properly this time. Only when she starts walking away did Yi Hua called out to her. With tears in his eyes as well, he manages to finally say goodbye to Guan Xin. . .
MeanwhileDr. Qiu, who had gotten back with his wife(his mistress left the country to raise their child on her own), is confronted with great tragedy. His only daughter, Xiao Mei, gets involved in car accident. Xiao Mei suffers head injury and she comes to a comatose state. At that time, three children confined in the hospital are in need for immediate organ transplants. Dr. Qiu refuses to discontinue the life-support for his daughter but in the end he finally agrees to donate his daughter’s organs(earlier in the series, the newborn baby of the couple who were in an accident died because he didn’t get a heart transplant; Dr. Qiu probably didn’t want other parents suffer the same pain the couple went thru). A few days/weeks later, a ceremony is held in honor of Xiao Mei; there, Dr. Qiu couldn’t help holding the little girl who got his daughter’s heart. . .
In the meantime, Dr. Su has decided to return to Cui Feng. She doesn’t say much at first but suddenly she wraps her arms around him. Returning her embrace, Yi Hua then promises her that she would never lose him and that he would never again leave her. Kissing her, he tells her that he really loves her. . .(hehe, I know I promised I wouldn’t put on my biased thoughts but let me just say that I honestly do believe what Yi Hua says in here is true. You see in ep29, Dr. Su tells Cui Feng herself that the ‘right person’ should be able to ‘give you energy and not waste it’; in this scene when Dr. Su returns home, he was looking so tired but one glimpse on a sleeping Cui Feng quickly puts a smile on his face)
Days later, a letter from Guan Xin arrived for Yi Hua. In the letter, Guan Xin tells Yi Hua how she met Dr. Qiao. She narrates that when she first arrived on the mountains, she was very miserable but after meeting Dr. Qiao, she found happiness. She adds that there in her mountain home, she had found what she had been looking for. (her dream was to be a doctor in a small clinic in the mountains and finally she had this realized. I guess she also meant that she found her true love) Guan Xin ended her letter by encouraging Yi Hua to visit the mountains so that it might help enlighten him as well. Dr. Su did go but he doesn’t go try to find Guan Xin instead, he only sits on top of the mountains and there he realizes that ‘those he thought had been most important became no longer important.’ Finally, the story ends with Dr. Su returning to the hospital and saying he wishes ‘we’ could help encourage him continue on his journey. . . (I still don’t completely understand what the Dr. Su meant about those he thought important no longer were but I am assuming that before he dreamed of being a small-time doctor but now he realized that dream was Guan Xin’s. I think he had realized his place was to work in this huge hospital where he could continue his researches which could help many others in the future. I think he might even be referring to Guan Xin who he thought was the most important person to him. . . I guess Director Cai wants us decide what we want of those words)
