i gather from your writing that you probably haven’t yet seen the movie king and the clown.
then i suppose you really haven’t seen the best yet of what junki can do.
you should see this movie if you’re a real junki fan, for he was absolutely stunning in it playing gong gil.
for a long time after seeing this movie, i find that sudden smile of his together with that long feminine hairstyle and him donning in that ancient attire would keep flashing across my mind and i couldn’t stop thinking of gong gil.
i believe being gong gil was the real power that junki has over millions of fans across asia and korea and that has attributed to the success of the movie and to his phenomenal popularity.

As for junki being in ‘my girl’, i think that role hasn’t done any real justice to his acting except that fighting scene in episode 10.
and he cried way too much in every scene which i think is rather silly, though no fault of his but the director i suppose.

and as for him getting all muscular and slightly thick in the arms after being in ‘fly daddy’ is rather worrisome too..…what if they decide to make a sequel to the ‘K&C’, i can’t imagine a muscular gong gil strutting her stuff around the countryside with her partner jang seang.

Oh gee, how I wish they will make a sequel and then a sequel again. That would be a trilogy like all great movies have. Lol.
The sequel can take off from very last scene where the whole troupe has supposedly escaped much earlier from the palace. Joon ik the director is a very clever man, for he has provided an alternate ending to the movie whereby there is always a chance for continuation. Oh please please please, let there be a sequel.

the king and the clown is basically a love story. i guess only a love story could have us gals so spellbound by it. i don't think women really care about politics or revolutions or whatever but the movie is really about the strong bond between the two characters in the story. A love bond that’s totally unselfish that’s beyond description and about how they would care for each other, look out for each other and would be willing even to die for each other. personally i wouldn’t think of this love as anything gayish but simply as genuine affection between two persons. seriously, if you’re a junki fan, you must see this movie.

I actually saw Jun Ki in My Girl first, I like him then but didn't love him. But after I watched the King & the Clown, I totally fell for him! His acting was amazing in there whereas not that great in My Girl (but still good!).
Even though a sequel sounds great, but I don't think the movie left much space for a sequel. I thought the ending where they showed Gong Gil, Jang Saeng & the rest of the clowns dancing and singing happily was a "what if they never went to the palace". Besides, what more can they talk about in a sequel? I actually prefer it if they leave The King & The Clown to end like that... because most sequels don't turn out as good as the first one. I will really like it if Jun Ki is offered another feminine role in another movie or even the main character in a drama series!

I've a very Wookified Day, cross my heart...U broke the silence finally...I'm a history freak so I'm more bent towards the historical tones and overtones in this drama...I guess I'm right in saying that the TWO clowns of GG and JS are glaringly ungayish....LJKi is straight in his character portrayal...that's obvious...but what I don't understand is the King's part; does he generalise that all clowns can be swayed to being this or that at any time??? I don't think Gong Gil and Jang Saeng are really gays, but I do think that the king is. Neither do I think that Gong Gil loves the king... he's acting more out of sympathy than anything else. I suppose the king thinks he can do anything he wants. He's attracted to Gong Gil's gentle beauty and that Gong Gil understands his grievious past. The king is really a tortured soul who acts impulsively.

i am sorry if i was being misunderstood when i said that ‘i wouldn’t think of this love as anything gayish…’

What i really want to say was that i wouldn’t look upon their love as something simply sexual. It’s more than that.
according to gong gil’s puppeteering, we were given the idea of how their friendship begins. they were running and the female puppet slipped, the male puppet helped her up and then affectionately soothed her face and the female puppet responded to his affection by resting her head on his chest. then later on we were told why they were running, that’s because gong gil had stolen the mistress’s ring and the two had to run away together.
i could be wrong but i believe that their binding friendship started then, very early on. they were probably very close and be as in love as they were, i think it’s perfectly alright and natural for two of them to want to express their love for each other by having ‘relations’. and in their case, it begins with genuine love and it isn’t lust. not like those wealthy patrons who had nothing but lust for gong gil.

besides, lets not forget that gong gil isn’t a virgin in this story. since she had to entertain an ugly old fat patron just so that the rest of the troupe wouldn’t starve, she probably knew what sex is all about. and to think of the strength and depth of jang saeng’s love for her, it would be too cruel to deny jang saeng not to have any ‘relations’ with her.

sometimes it’s unnerving to think of how touching jang saeng’s love for gong gil is. like those nights when gong gil was away, he would sit up waiting for her to return. he wouldn’t sleep but brood instead, wallowing in jealousy i suppose.
after the arrow shooting incident, when the whole troupe was preparing to leave the palace, jang saeng just sat there, refused to move his butt until he saw gong gil coming. and the last thing he wanted to hear from gong gil was when she said ‘don’t go’ and i guess in his frustration he flung off gong gil’s hand. even then we the audience knew he wouldn’t leave her behind. like when he was released from jail by the old eunuch and taken outside the palace, he couldn’t just walk away. he won’t leave without gong gil .

no doubt all these are fictional characters and any interpretation is up individual liking but still it’s one great love story. if there any man i would want to love, it would be jang saeng but i guess he would only want gong gil and no one else. Lol.
and i believe it’s every woman’s secret desire to be loved and wanted like gong gil.
great love story. truly great.

Did you mean to say that Gong Gil and Jang Saeng had a sexual relationship (they had sex)??? Actually, I don't think they did anything of that sort, because I read this article that said the director consulted this last surviving clown, Kim Gi Bok, to make the movie accurate. And Kim Gi Bok said masculine clowns would have biris (feminine clowns) but the relationships were nothing sexual. They were pure and genuine.
I think that the love between Gong Gil and Jang Saeng wasn't really homosexual. It was in some sense, homosexual... but their love is really deep that comes from a profound understanding of each other. I sound like I'm contradicting myself! But what I'm really trying to say is: at a glance, they are homosexuals, but when you go further into it, they don't seem to be gays after all. Their love is one of purity in which you don't feel the need to fulfil your sexual desires.

i have recently started to watch the king and the clown. i have been wanting to watch it for awhile but never had time. i found the movie on youtube but its kind of frustrating because its broken down into 12 parts which i think takes away from the movie. i agree that his role in this movie was far superior to the role in my girl. lee jun ki deserves so much credit because of the daring role he took, most actors couldnt pull it off but he did flawlessly & looked really good while doing so

Making use of clowns to confront and size up the issues is indeed more than being clever and commendable cos' clowns can play dual or multiple roles in amusing and abusing, sort of mocking etc..The director did a lot of homework. Junkie just fits the bill of someone befitting to portray the characters....now I begin 2 see why the K and C being applauded as an Oscar entry!!!!

how’s your weekend? mine was hectic, saturday went barbecuing at the beach with a group of friends and on sunday went hiking. i’m now all washed out.
let me share something humorous with you, that i have discovered how to eat mooncake at a barbecue! i have this funny ingenious friend who put a large chunk of mooncake on a bbq fork to roast , and while another friend was roasting marshmallows, they started joking and somehow ended up playing swords fighting with their forks. the marshmallow was dripping all over the hot mooncake, i tasted it and it was really nice!

back to our topic of the K&C,
i’m new here in this forum and i am glad i have found this place.
and if ever i find the time to log on, i like backtracking to the past and read up as much as i possibly could about all that was said and printed about this movie. i did read about that article about kim gi bok . he didn’t exactly say that all the relationships were not homosexual, just presuming some were and some were not. if you were to reread that article again, try to read between the lines of what he was trying to convey about these relationships without putting himself in a position of having to commit or admit anything directly or openly.

as i mentioned b4, since the characters in K&C are fictional, any interpretation is really up to individual liking. you could choose to mould these characters into anything according to your whims and fantasies or you could choose to see them as they really are on screen. we can be kind and generous towards these characters or we can simply judge them harshly according to our likes and dislikes. i know many people do not like gays, but hey, welcome to the real world, gays do exist and we need not be afraid of them. i am not for gays nor am i against them but homosexual people are humans too. they can love as deeply as any love between a man and a woman and their love as equally sincere and strong. after watching K&C, any bias i may have towards homosexuals b4 were all gone and now i see them differently.

you asked did i think gong gil and jang saeng had a sexual relationship, i’ll say yes. i choose to be generous towards the character jang saeng, because since gong gil could have sex with other men, why not with jang saeng too!
concerning how he loves her to such distractions, of having to endure being beaten and kicked and nearly had his foot smashed and finally to go blind. it would be too cruel if he didn’t have the pleasure of having of gong gil while others did.
from the onset of the movie, when jang saeng screamed at the captain of the troupe “stop pimping off of gong gil” is a good indication that that wasn’t the first time gong gil has been pimped off. when he saw the captain talking to that ugly old patron, he lost his mood to perform and drop from the rope on purpose, that showed that pimping off gong gil had happened b4. and this indicates gong gil isn’t a virgin, so i don't think their relationship is a platonic one.

i greatly admire the character jang saeng for his courage and strength, of how he protects and loves his gong gil, the light of his life. when he thought that light was gone, he rather go blind. he really thought that gong gil had fallen for the king. i wept so bitterly when i finally understood his lost and his desperation in the last scene. that was after watching the dvd listening to the spoken chinese instead of reading the english subtitles. the english substitles is not good enough in revealing the emotional depth of what was being said most of the time. the chinese translation was much better. the spoken chinese is far more accurate in exposing the emotional depth of how jang saeng felt. one line made so much difference was when he said in chinese “the murdering thief has HIS heart stolen away” whereas the english subtitle says “the murdering thief has stolen a heart” . blah. big difference!

it’s just too bad that you couldn’t get hold of a dvd.
but i guess seeing it on youtube is better than nothing.

i would say the best place to see this movie is in the cinema, because the effect is simply awesome. you could get to see junki so clearly, up close and big.
i remember seeing for the first time when junki smiles on screen was when jang saeng hugged him after they had played and acted as two blind persons. that sweet sweet sudden smile of his had me so stunned that it has made an everlasting impression on my mind. junki was soooo….oh beautiful. it was such a heavenly sight to behold.
that awesome effect of seeing his face big on the screen is difficult to describe unless you’ve got to see it yourself. for those who had seen the K&C in cinema would know what i’m trying to say. the effect is somewhat lost on watching dvd.

Your weekend sounds fun! Roasted mooncake with melted marshmallow! Sounds yummy! That could be a new product! My weekend was just ok... not as exciting as yours! I just went shopping with friends (as usual), went to church, spent quite some money treating a friend to Japanese food for his birthday (oh, the heartache...) and played with lanterns! We can be considered adults already (18) but we're still like little kids, playing with lanterns! LOL! Took some cool pictures that seem like they came out from a horror movie because it was pitch dark with the only light coming from the red glow of the lanterns. Hehe.
Okay, enough about me! Hmm... you could be right about Kim Gi Bok... he could have been saying it in the best possible way without openly admitting, but I still believe that the relationships were not sexual as in they did not have sex with each other. (Yes, I'm stubborn, I'm Taurean!)
I choose also to believe that Gong Gil and Jang Saeng did not have a sexual relationship. I would like to think that Jang Saeng did not want to hurt Gong Gil (even if Gong Gil was willing) by having sex with him, because Gong Gil was emotionally scarred by being forced into pimping himself. I do, however, agree with you that Gong Gil wasn't a virgin. About their relationship, I don't think it's platonic too, but I don't think it's homosexual either. I don't really know how to explain it. It's pure and beautiful and deeper than love from a man to a woman, but at the same time, you just don't feel like it's homosexual... I'm not good at explaining myself.
You watched it on the big screen? How lucky! My country's not even showing it! Nor are DVD's on sale here! I had to download the movie, but I'll try to buy it online perhaps. Luckily, the English subtitles were good enough and I cried at the parts when Jang Saeng became blind, Gong Gil tried to commit suicide and the ending... That was the saddest part, when Jang Saeng said "I see nothing but an abyss... I should have gone blind sooner" and when Gong Gil said "I want to be a minstrel! Nothing more than that!" It was so heartrending... and the soundtrack was so appropriate. I'm sure the spoken Korean used beautiful words! If only I understood Korean...
