What do you think of this recent trend with TVB series and remaking of Hollywood movies or American television series? TVB tried to remake something like sex and they city with Women On the Run, but I didn't think that was much of a success, and now TVB is thinking about doing something like Desperate Housewives (Sheren, Leila) and Bridget Jone's Diary (with Myolie), and also something like CSI with Forensics Hero (with Bobby, Yoyo). On one hand, I'm curious how they are going to make it, but yet, I'm pondering whether remakes are any good as it would lack freshness/appeal.
Do you think remakes would continue the trend of being a flop or do you think it depends on the storyline?
Albeit, TVB has a trend of remaking some of the same concepts of some American series like Healing Hands, Detective Investigations Files, Files of Justice, and even to a small extent Burning Flame. And these were all good series that did well in ratings and were popular with the audience, but they werent' known as remakes either.
So do you like all these remakes of Hollywood or American movies? or would you rather TVB make series similar to us series, but not declare it as remake?

i actually dont mind them remaking US/hollywood series, as long as they do it nicely and the acting's good, i dont care.
TVB doesnt have much original ideas in their modern series lately. i guess that's why they plan to do remakes instead. of course, some people might say that TVB is plain copying US/hollywood's ideas and everything ... i dont disagree with this one too but like i've said as long as TVB's version is good i dont mind.
in fact, i'm anticipating Forensic Heroes!!

i look forward to Forsenics Heros but not too sure about Desperate Housewives and Bridget Jone's Diary. Women on the Run sounds the same as DH for me. anyway, tvb series are always family friendly and DH and BJD aren't.

of the 3 remakes so far, i would only be interested in Forensic Heroes because investigation/cops series always interests me to watch more whereas the other two doesn't seem as good if they remake it since they probably can't live up to the reputations or even compare with the american version. Like To Get Unstuck In Time, in away this series is similar to the American movie "Frequency" but I find Frequency more interesting and better than TGUIT...and Healing Hands weren't that interesting to watch either.

i don't like the idea, because tvb will change the concept so much that when it is all said and done it'll just be another water downed version of the same formulaic tvb hashed stories about love lost and found, revenge and greed. i can't see their version of desperate housewives anywhere near or as over the top as the american version. i also can't see the forensic show being anywhere near or as interesting as CSI because tvb likes to mix in love relationships into their shows, which in my opinion doesn't exist in the american versions of these shows because that isn't the driving force behind the america versions. so in my opinion, i think this is a bad idea especiallly when tvb slaps on the notion that these shows will be similar to the american versions.
their best bet is to come up with more original ideas of their own.

actually, i don't mind it too much, as long as the series is entertaining is all that matters. forensic heroes looks good. but their has always been a history of give and take between the entertainment industries of asia and america. for example, ring, aka the grudge anyone?? my point is, just because there have been many series that was copied from one source or another, doesn't mean all copied series are bad. i'd live to give some examples...but i can't really think right now...
but like xtremecold said, it's better to just come up with new series altogether...preferably something that relates to the hong kong population.

I don't mind them recycling the same ideas, but they really shouldn't label these as "remakes" because they really aren't...these series are actually loosely based on a similar concept...I actually don't think that it's even possible to remake an American TV series or movie entirely (copy it without changing a whole lot) because of the inherent cultural differences between Chinese and Americans....this is probably why TVB always changes the plots and characters so much that it ends up not even coming close to the supposed "original" or counterpart in the U.S.
