Vanness Wu Great Newcomer
Happy being nominated Wish to me a lunatic
The one who ran first in the movie entertainment Vanness Wu of F4, recently got nominated for the Movie award, he got nominated as this time's HK Jing Xiang Jiang Best Newcomer with Star Runner. Vanness said, " I'm happy that i'm nomindated, hopes to be a lunactic or unbalanced person the next time." He is now recording his new album in Ameria, he'll be a babysitter when he's free, taking his brother and sister out ot play.
7,8 pm in Los Angelas, Vanness took his brother and went on a 25 miute ride in his car to meet up with his friends to play basketball. Normally, he doesn't have time to accompany his younger brother. This time, not only he's back for recording, he trys to fork out time to take them out, Vanness laughed and said, " I often bully them while i was young, now, they're sticking to me all the time, i feel so guilty."
Vanness's character is honest and cheerful, and has talents. Talking about his new album, he says its made out of blood and sweat. While going to Singapore to host the MTV Asia Awards was very outstanding, MTV invited him to host the whole event. As his movie, Star Runner even got nominated as the Best Newcomer, even Jerry Yan praised that it was tough on Vanness fliming a movie. Vanness who thinks about other alot said, " Fliming love stories or stories with love is even harder, no matter how tough is it fliming action movies, it won't be as hard as the soldiers."
Star Runner, action movie, allowed Vanness and An Zhi Jie to become good friends. Previously, An Zhi Jie worked with SHu Qi and also in many other shows, his experience was great. Being nominated as the Best Newcomer together with Vanness, Vanness said, " When i knew he was nominated, i immediately congratulated him, we're friends, i didn't think that much. " It was funny, though Vanness could experience the freedom life in US, he misses Taiwan alot. He says he misses his friends, colleagues, environment. He doesn't miss the food, because he gets fat easily and has to control. Asked whether he misses the misses the rumoured Vivian Hsu, Vanness laughed and said, " You're thinking too much."

Clara Enriquez
Vanness Wu of F4 fame has taken the entertainment scene by storm as a soloist. As a member of the biggest Taiwanese pop act, F4, it comes as no surprise that he is enjoying huge success on his own.
From the popular soap opera (Meteor Garden I and II), smash records (Meteor Rain, Body Will Sing, and Fantasy 4ever), music videos, and the Star Runner film, the versatile performer came into his own as singer-songwriter Michelle Branch's co-host at the recently concluded MTV Asia Awards 2004 in Singapore.
Remarkably, Vanness remains unassuming despite his success, as evident in the following rap session at the Fullerton Hotel the day before the Awards.
* * *
Are you excited to be co-hosting the MTV Asia Awards 2004?
I'm pretty excited for the big event, yeah! When I first heard about this, yeah, I was pretty excited. And I just can't wait to do it!
Why do you think MTV picked you as a host?
Pick me? I have no idea why they picked me! Probably because I could speak English.
Do you think that's your strength as a host?
Well, in this sense, yeah. If you tell me to speak Mandarin in Taiwan, that wouldn't be my strong point but I will try my best at it. But, you know, probably just...I can goof off on stage probably. I'm really, you know, easygoing and willing to do anything just in the name of fun. I like to enjoy myself and have fun!
Time and again, you have changed your look in keeping with your pretty boy image, as you have now. What can you say about that?
On being a pretty boy? Oh, no, this is just temporary! I mean, my hair was long; I was in America for a while, so it just grew out and then I had a change.
It's not really saying, like, "Okay, we're changing styles." We're just going for a different image all around. It's just enjoying yourself, you know -- have fun, have different looks, be different. You know?
But, you know, I'm still the same person as I am; I'm still the same person as I was before. And image is just image -- it's nothing.
Is it difficult to maintain?
The only thing difficult to maintain for me is my weight because I gain weight really easy. For the movie I lost a lot of weight.
How did you do that?
I had a very strict diet of just vegetables and protein, and canned tuna fish. And that's all I ate! I didn't really eat anything too over the top like, say, you know, steak. I couldn't even touch it!
And just working out and shooting fighting scenes 10 hours a day, and just keep on intense working out. So that helped a lot, and I lost the weight with that.
But right after I was done, it's [blows a kiss] back to hamburgers and, you know, cheeseburgers and all that! It's difficult but it's fun, you know?
What's the story behind the movie?
The story behind it? Actually, I was really lucky on this movie project because of everybody that worked on this movie gave it their 100% -- all their time and energy they spent, you know.
Nowadays it's hard to get an actor to have all his time and energy on one movie 'because a lot of actors these days, they also do singing and they also do TV hosting, right, at the same time. So they only have, maybe, one week to shoot this part and then they gotta do something else.
But this time, the actress, the actors, the cast, the crew, the director -- everybody just, day and night, two and a half months straight; everybody was together and every day just seeing each other. And so towards the end of it we all became like a family. You know, like this family environment that even now, to this day -- me and the director, me and the trainers and the other actors -- we're still very close friends.
So out of that whole experience, anything I got out of it was just really good. A great experience and good friendships!
Any plans to do another movie?
Hopefully, hopefully. Right now I'm just focusing a lot of my energy and time on my second book. And as soon as that's done and as soon as I'm finished promoting that, hopefully I'll be back to act as well.
Between singing and acting, which do you enjoy better?
In one phrase it's so close and yet so far. So similar and so different, you know? They're both very, very draining at times, but then they're both so exhilarating, rewarding.
So when you're acting, you're working so hard, like, three days on just, maybe, two minutes' worth of footage. And then after the end of these months, you finally see the [finished] product on the big screen and you're, like, "Wow!" It's a whole different feeling!
With singing it's on stage and you're singing to the audience, and you're feeding off their reaction. You're feeding off their energy, you know? And you're just going for an hour and a half straight of just, like, jumping around and moving around.
"They're so different but, at the same time, it's such a high!"
Nowadays do you still get excited on stage?
Well, of course! You know, I'm always excited when I'm on stage to see fans, to see people, to be able to perform. It's always exciting!
And which song do you enjoy performing most?
Which song? There are so many songs! And they're all so different, and they're all nice. So there isn't one that I particularly like to perform, but...just pick one? Really, I can't!
I just love the different crowds and the people, so to pick one...? Because they all have different reactions to them I really can't, I'm sorry!
You used to dance before joining F4?
It was just for fun, while we were growing up as kids, I was in a dance group. Me and another friend, and Kenny of Machi -- we would do dance competitions at car shows and stuff like that. That was when I really enjoyed being on stage! To get on stage and just dancing, and then hear the crowd just bouncing and cheering and everything -- that's when I realized, "I like this feeling!" It's cool, you know?
How do you feel about the phenomenal success of F4 in the Asian region and in the Philippines in particular, where there is a language barrier?
I take it as a blessing; it's a gift from God, yeah. It's not every day that many people will be able to do what they love to do and to be able to cross boundaries of one so big, you know, to not even understand what the person is saying but for them to welcome me into their homes and country, and to be able to enjoy their culture and to learn new experiences -- it's very humbling. I just hope I'm not taking it for granted.
What is it about the group or your music that you think people can relate to?
To be honest, I think it was just the TV show. It was a good TV show! It had good chemistry; it had a good story. The characters were just fun, and there wasn't really anything behind it! ...We just wanted to make people enjoy a good show, you know; have a good time while they're watching, you know, an hour of that segment of that show. It wasn't saying, "Oh, we're gonna make new boundaries with these."
When we heard that Indonesia liked us, you know, "What?" When we heard that, you know, Thailand was... I heard that call, "Huh?" And then the last one, they said, Philippines, I went, "Oh, my God! Get out! Really?" And then, "They want you guys to go!"
I have a lot of Filipino friends when I was growing up in high school. So when I told my friends, "You know, I'm going to the Philippines," [they said] "I haven't been to the Philippines in 19 years and you're going to perform there? That's funny!" It's funny the way things work, but it's very nice!
[Do you get jealous of each other's individual success, considering some of you are bigger than the others?
Well, I don't think we're necessarily bigger; we just have a different fan base. We don't really look at it as who's bigger, who's what. We just look at it as what we each have to give; we each have different enjoyments, you know, working.
Mine is I like to sing and dance, and we all like acting, of course. But it's just different types of characters, too.
I'm really an active type of person: I love running around, jumping around, and just goofing off. So for the first movie when they told me it was gonna be an action movie, I was, like, "Yes!" I was, like, "Oh, yeah!" And so that was awesome, but we're really happy for each other! And everything that everybody else does, we're really excited for each other.
Have you guys seen American Idol? You know, Clay and Reuben? Like he said, the media doesn't want to talk about them unless, you know, they say they're at each other's throats; unless they don't like each other.
It's kinda the same for us, too: People say that we don't get along and then we're not friends, and all that stuff. But the thing is if we don't get along, why would any of us be here today? Or for the premiere of my movie in Taiwan, why would the rest of them all show up?
The media was very surprised that the rest of them showed up, actually. And I was, like, "Why? We're friends, you know! What's wrong with you?" They're so into their own world and they're so into, like, what they write down; what they believe is true. By some meaning, I don't know how they fathom all that stuff up! But it's so funny that they believe what they write so immensely, you know? And in the end it's like, "Hello! You know? What is this? You know?"
We're all still very good friends; we don't get jealous of each other at all. We're very happy!

F2 to be in new drama, "Soccer Boy"
Following “Meteor Garden 2,” Ken Zhu and Vanness Wu will have a chance to act together once more in a new drama “Zu Qiu Xiao Zi” (Soccer Boy). At the moment, the female lead is most likely going to be Lin Yi Chen.
Manager Xiong Xiu Zhen revealed, in Taiwan and China, F4 has a vast amount of die-hard fans. She plans to collaborate with Shanghai TV. The idol drama, “Zu Qiu Xiao Zi” will have F4 as the leading roles. However, due to the fact that Jerry Yan wants to develop in the movie industry, and Vic Zhou (Zai Zai) is currently filming a new drama already, the 4 are unable to work together. Therefore, right now F2, Ken and Vanness, are the male leads. And Lin Yi Chen will play the female lead.
Xiong Xiu Zhen said, “I hope that the female lead has a considerably famous degree in both Taiwan and mainland. And Lin Yi Chen’s movie “Kong Shou Dao Shao Nu” is broadcasting in China and she also was nominated for the Golden Horse Awards. I believe that no matter it be popularity, acting skills, she is the best choice for the female lead.”
Lin Yi Chen’s broker Zhou Mei Yu expressed that she won’t rule out that she’ll arrange for Lin Yi Chen to go towards China to film. However, currently, besides “My Secret Garden 2” and “Love Contract,” in June she might be working with Zheng Yuan Chang in a new drama, “Mischievous Kiss.” Plus, Lin Yi Chen has schoolwork. Therefore there is not exact “landing” date, not only China dramas but even at a discussing stage. So it’s inconvenient to reveal the situation in detail. Lin Yi Chen is very popular; her invitations for dramas are endless.

Pardon, what’s your name again?
When F4’s Vanness Wu was here recently for movie promotions, a curious reporter stood up and asked: “Were your parents hoping for a girl to call Vannessa when then had you?
Vanness chuckled – though he’s probably heard the question a zillion times.
For the record, the American-born star did not choose it himself.
It was his parents who named him after a road in Los Angeles, known as Van Ness.
But, at least his unique name had made many people sit up and take note.
Welcome to the world of Asian showbiz, where some celebrities pick the most bizarre names for themselves.
What’s a walking road sign when compared to, say, Noddle, Jingle, and Shooky?
Is it just bad English? Or do these ludicrous names have logical explanations?

Manila Bulletin article.
What Makes Taiwanese Groups Tick?
After the sensational F4 comes another popular group from Taiwan, the 5566. I'm sure there are other groups making a name in Taiwan but these two are very likely the most popular.
......We were asked not to ask the 5566 any questions about F4 but how could the press not think of the F4 when they are face-to-face with a group from the same country? Anyway, the group said that despite their being competitors, they are good friends with F4 when
they're off the stage. "We hope one day we will be as popular as them," they said.

continuation....
THE BOY BANDS
Seems like weird names run in Taiwanese boy bands.
Besides F4's Vanness , there's also Energy's Milk, Comic Boyz's Kingone and Shone, and K-One's Kido.
Milk, or Niu Nai in Mandarin, is named after his favourite beverage, and has fair skin to go with his moniker.
Kingone's moniker is a play on his Chinese name Wang Chuan Yi. Wang means king, and Yi is one.
As for Shone and Kido, we can only hope they're not spelling errors.
THE MANY FANS
The Fans in showbiz are a creative bunch when it comes to choosing English names.
Taiwanese balladeer Fan Yi-chen, for one, picked Van (yes, as in the vehicle), simply because it rhymes with his surname.
Award-winning Taiwanese actor Fan Zhi-wei, however, calls himself Wing, after his favourite actor Tony Leung Chiu Wai's character in the 1996 movie, Blind Romance.
Right here in Singapore, we have a Fan who is known by her surname in English.
Fann Wong, or Fan Wen-fang in Mandarin, was originally known as Fann Woon Fong.
But she made her debut as a model with just her surname, Fann. Some Singaporeans mixed her up with another model, Fawn Wong, and she's been known as Fann Wong since.
Incidentally, Wong is also her mum's surname.
EAT MY NAME
Beside Energy's Milk, Channel U's Apple Hong also named herself after her favourite food. Apple, that is.
So, does it mean Fish Leong loves fish?
Nah. The Malaysian singer calls herself Fish because that's what people call her in Cantonese.
Her name is pronounced Zheng-yu, and people always call her Ah Yu affectionately. Yu means fish in Cantonese.
WACKY DIRECTORS
Directors, too, have unusual names. Consider Jingle Ma, Fruit Chen and Oxide Pang.
Jingle said he got his name from colleagues at the hair salon where he used to work - 'everyone said I was too talkative, like jingle bells'.
Fruit is a direct translation of his Chinese name Chen Guo. Guo means fruit.
And Oxide, whose Chinese name is Pang Shun, named himself after the gaseous element he learnt about in chemistry class.
MULTI-NAMED CELEBS
Is it Ekin, Noodle, Dior or Eric Cheng? This Hong Kong movie star has changed his English name more often than he did his hair style.
Ekin is adapted from his Chinese name Yee Kin. He's also nicknamed Noodle, as Yee Kin sounds like a type of Chinese noodle, yi meen.
Dior reportedly came about when his baby sister mispronounced 'yi gor', or second brother in Cantonese.
There's also talk that it was his hairdresser who suggested the name.
As for Eric, that's supposedly the name that appears in the US versions of his movies.
He's not alone though.
Malaysian actress-singer Lee Sin Je also can't seem to decide on her English name.
Once she called herself Jet, after her favourite gongfu star Jet Li. More recently, she gave herself the name Angelica. Now she's just Lee Sin Je.
Tommy Su of Little Tigers, changed his name to mark an image change. Now that he's gone solo, he's known as Alec.
Soft-porn star Loletta Lee has also switched to the more tame Rachel.
SOFT-PORN STARS
As if being sexy is not enough, some soft-porn actresses need unique names too. Chingmy Yau Suk Ching comes to mind, as well as Shooky Kwan Sau Mei.
They've been known by these one-of-its-kind monikers since 1987, when both joined the Miss Hong Kong pageant.
JERRY TRIO: EACH HAS DIFFERENT APPEAL
SOME English names are so common - and may we add, boring - that one hand isn't enough to count.
Two Andys: Lau, the Heavenly King and Hui, the Heavenly King wannabe.
Two Stephens: Chow makes us laugh. Fung makes us swoon.
Two Joeys: Wong, the retired Taiwanese screen queen of the '80s, and rumoured triad princess Yung.
Two Kellys: Lin, the sexy bombshell and Chen, the ice queen.
Two Tony Leungs: Chiu Wai with the smouldering eyes and Kar Fai with the rubber face.
Two Gigis: Boyfriend snatcher Leung and pretty dimples Lai.
Two Anitas: Yuen is still going strong but Mui just left us forever.
Two Lawrences: Ng, the beanstalk television actor and Chou, the beanstalk singer.
Three Jerrys: Cute dimples Yan of Meteor Garden , Eurasian-looking Huang of The Rose, and Star Search bad boy Chang
Four Jacky/ies: There's a Jacky/Jackie for every showbiz category. Chan in gongfu flicks, Cheung in music, Wu in television variety shows and Lui in TVB dramas.
Five Michelles: Bond girl Yeoh, ex-beauty queen Reis, local Lux girl Chia, Meteor Garden star Saram, and former Channel U artiste Chong.
