Since entering the industry, there seems to be many kinds of debates surrounding Myolie Wu. From her looks to her figure to her image to her acting skills, she was once been heavily criticized by the fussy audience, and was even given the “XX” nickname. But until today, when talking about Myolie Wu again, everyone will recall more about her being hardworking, friendly, seeking to improve herself, and successful. Not long ago, when Myolie Wu came to Suzhou to attend Chambre De Beaute 9th Anniversary party, she accepted an interview by our magazine, and explained in detail on her map of growing up and maturation.
Good and Obedient Girl – Belfast, Hong Kong University of Science and TechnologyCompared to other children, Myolie Wu’s schooling days were filled with more dangers and excitement. When she was about to enter secondary school, because of close connections, she was being sent by her family for overseas studies in Belfast. After she completed her education there, she even picked up the local English slang there. As the situation in North Ireland back then wasn’t stable, there were many gun fights and explosions there. When one’s shopping, there was even the metal detector to check if there’s any weapon in one’s handbag. When she first arrived there, she was often frightened by the explosions at night. When she returned to Hong Kong and thought back, she would sometimes still feel very scared. However, the obedient Myolie Wu’s results were still completed on a fantastic note, and she returned to Hong Kong to take part in the streaming examination, clinching 22 points. Thus she entered the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology with her good results, and studied bio-chemistry.
Debatable Miss HK – Second Runner-up, Quitting SchoolAfter entering university, there was a period of time where Myolie Wu could not get used to the Hong Kong’s competitive learning environment, as she was more used to the relaxed teaching style from overseas. Therefore, she had to put in more effort into her studies. After she joined the school’s drama club, she felt that she had a little talent in the performing area. Coincidentally, her friend wanted to join the Miss HK competition, thus she followed along. When talking about this piece of her past, Myolie Wu was most grateful towards the professors in her university back then. Because when she joined the competition, it was coincidentally the examination period. As she did not have complete confidence for her Miss HK competition route, thus it was impossible for her to give up on her studies and put all her stakes on the competition. The only way was to convince the professors to agree to an early examination. Thus she went to find every professor, and finally, she managed to convince them, thus she could be more rest assured when taking part in the competition. The 19-year-old Myolie Wu passed through all rounds, and clinched the second runner-up position and most energetic award. She quitted school, and signed onto TVB, officially entering the entertainment industry. Coincidentally, the university, which she studied back then, was just located beside TVB, and Myolie Wu joked that she gave up on her bio-chemistry degree and switched to ‘TVB university’ instead.
A-listed Fadan – Ding Sin Yan, Tin Lik, Ho Mei TinAfter entering TVB, the first piece of work that gained her recognition was the mentally-challenged girl, Ding Sin Yan, in Golden Faith. She clinched the Most Improved Actress award back then during the TVB Anniversary. After that, Tin Lik from War-of-in-laws, which was popular and highly-rated, helped to secure her A-listed Fadan status. Though her path seemed quite smooth, the complicated entertainment industry still made it difficult for Myolie Wu to get used to it. She called herself as “someone who doesn’t really know how to socialize around”. Just like the 8 cats which she keeps – a little proud, a little cool, afraid of the overly-enthusiastic personal relations, and also not adept in communicating with people. She likes to be a homely lady, and is active in buying clothes online. She loves PS3, as she likes to release her little ‘violent streak’ when playing games. Thus having to live under the spotlight constantly and being buried under countless good and bad reviews were not exactly the life that she likes. What hurt her most was during her portrayal of Ho Mei Tin in To Grow With Love. For this drama, she put on 36kg of weight, and her figure ballooned up a few times. Originally, she thought that by working so hard for the role, she should also get some deserving recognition, but al the media cared about was to report on her loss to Charmaine Shen during the fight for the awards. Thinking back on this, Myolie Wu felt helpless and upset. However she gradually learnt how to de-stress herself, and also ignore the overboard criticisms.
Newcomer in Music Industry – Newcomer Awards, New AlbumActing before singing has always been the tradition in Hong Kong’s entertainment industry. However talking about singing, Myolie Wu is already the winning newcomer more than 10 years ago. Back then when she was studying in England, she took part in a Chinese New Talent competition, and entered the final 5 round. She even clinched the Most Potential award, which was won even earlier than her Miss HK second runner-up award. Now that she has entered the music industry, it can be considered that she’s making full use of her talent. Myolie Wu is also in love with singing. She judged on both acting and singing, “When acting, I’m portraying another person. But singing is being myself.” She will be releasing her new album next month, allowing us to once again see the completely real Myolie Wu, whose image is entirely different from her onscreen characters.
As TVB’s A-listed Fadan, Myolie Wu has worked with almost all of the popular male stars. Most are the hot, moving, or comical emotional scenes. After entering the music industry, the MV is also playing on the ‘lovers’ notion. Let’s hear Myolie Wu talk about those ‘lovers’, and see a different side of them behind the screen.
Bosco Wong – ‘Rumored’ LoverSince cooperating in War-of-in-laws in 2005, the rumors of Myolie Wu and Bosco Wong had spread on for 4 years. Though the involved parties have not responded to this rumor directly, their rumor sounded real, and it was even exposed that they had co-habited in a university staff hostel. As for the recent rumor which said that they had already broken up, the triggering factor was that Myolie Wu was displeased with the guy’s flirtatiousness. Ever since Bosco Wong entered the industry, his rumors with the opposite sex were endless. Other than ‘official-partner’ Myolie Wu, there were still Fala Chen, Niki Chow and Bernice Liu. When the most recent rumored girlfriend, Toby Leung, began surfacing, Myolie Wu could no longer withstand it. Not only did she initiate a break-up, she also threw Bosco Wong’s personal belongings out of their home, and ended the 4-year relationship. When she was promoting her new drama not long ago, Myolie Wu not only expressed that she had no date on the Chinese Valentine’s Day, she also hinted that she cannot accept unfaithful men, making people link back to Bosco Wong.
But when Myolie Wu’s being asked about relationship issues, she kept on beating around the bush, saying that she hopes to concentrate on her work now, and she’s only good friends with Bosco Wong. The reason why their rumor is ongoing is because “everyone hopes for us to be together”. It seems like in order to prove that she’s single, she even announced her criteria for the ideal boyfriend: “Must be matured. Can play around with. Love cats. Taller than me.” Most importantly, he has to appear in front of her at the appropriate timing. “If he appears too early, I’ll keep feeling that there’ll be someone better later on, and won’t learn to cherish him.” However, though she kept on denying her relationship with Bosco Wong, she still remembered the happy times they had spent together – “He’s very comical. When filming a comedy, we’ll particularly have chemistry. Both of us like to eat, especially spicy food. We often go around looking for good food to eat.”
Raymond Lam – “Buddy” LoverWhen filming The Drive of Life and Survivor’s Law, Myolie Wu and Raymond Lam were still newcomers in the industry. A misty secret love, the ambition and encouragement during youth, how compatible! This allows the fans to hold positive expectations over this pair of onscreen couple. However, Myolie Wu felt that Raymond Lam is just an imaginary Prince Charming, thus it’s impossible between both of them in reality. Her biggest regret is that both of them have lesser cooperation recently, and she’s fast forgetting on the feeling of filming together with him.
Gallen Lo – “Senior” LoverBack in 2002, when Myolie Wu was still a newcomer, she already worked with the popular ‘First Brother’, Gallen Lo, in the Golden Faith drama. Last year, both of them cooperated in another new drama, When Dogs Love Cats. Myolie played a lady whose personality resembled a dog, while Gallen played someone whose personality resembled a cat, thus transforming from the siblings in GF to a pair of lovers in WDLC. 6 years later, it was a lot of pressure on Myolie Wu who’s working with Gallen again, who acts like a teacher and friend to her. The netizens did not feel positive about their pairing, and thought that Myolie Wu’s acting did not match up with Gallen Lo. However, Gallen strongly supported his junior, and greatly praised that she’s just as hardworking and meticulous as before. Her acting also had a huge improvement, and it’s normal to make mistakes sometimes. He even used the angle as a senior to advise Myolie not to use too much force when she acts, because this will give people an unnatural feeling. Myolie also made use of this opportunity to learn more, and when she had no scenes, she would be by the side watching Gallen’s performance and learn on the ‘how to act without acting’ skill. During filming, under the influence of Gallen’s natural acting performance, she also got into the role very quickly.
Andy Hui – “Neighbor” LoverWhen filming To Grow With Love, there was a rumor going around that Andy Hui was on a hot pursuit over Myolie Wu. But when Myolie talked about Andy Hui, there wasn’t any unnatural feeling. She even explained why both of them seemed to be traveling together. This was because her home was close to Andy Hui’s home. Since both of them were in the same drama, Myolie Wu often took a ride in this neighbor’s nanny car, and out of carelessness, both of them had rumors. In her eyes, though Andy had quite good results in the music industry, his personality was still very friendly and he loved to play around. He was nothing like what the media described him to be as unfriendly and difficult to get along. In reality, Andy Hui often cracked jokes, thus it was relaxing and happy to work with him. Myolie Wu felt that it was a great pity that she did not have any plans to enter the music industry back then, thus she did not make use of the chance to learn more singing techniques from him. But she delightedly revealed that back then when both of them were listening to songs on the car, Andy Hui was surprised that she knew how to sing so many songs. This was picked up because she listened to the radio on a regular basis. She did not expect this to surprise the singer.
Julian Cheung – “Ripening” LoverIn her upcoming new album, Myolie Wu will be singing a duet, Break Off, with Julian Cheung, whom started his career as a singer, and also the Mandarin version, Once Loved. The MV had also just completed filming. In the MV, both of them played lovers, and held hands together while occasionally whisperings at each other’s ears. In front of the media, they also graciously hugged and got intimate. However, Myolie Wu laughed and said that both of them were actually not on close terms with each other yet. Their first meeting was actually in the recording studio. But in order to create more sparks for the MV filming, both of them tried their best to take out more time to understand each other recently. Once they had the chance, they would chit-chat for a long time. For this recent period of time, the number of times she had seen him was even more than the times she had seen her family members. Julian Cheung, who’s a responsible father, even shared with Myolie Wu on his son’s interesting events, thus both of them quickly overcame the strangers’ gap, and easily became good friends. What Myolie Wu admires Julian Cheung most is his calm and relaxed manner of handling situations. He never reveals his anxious side. On the night of the Sha Tin Mid-Autumn event, both of them were supposed to perform on stage together, and coincidentally, they were arranged to perform last. When the event started, there was still over an hour more to go before it was their turn to perform. Julian Cheung decided to make use of the time and call Myolie Wu and the workers to go and have a huge dinner feast. The impatient Myolie Wu was eating and rushing people at the same time, as she was afraid that it might interfere with their timing to go on stage. However, Julian wasn’t anxious at all and even ordered an Alaskan crab. He finished it calmly, before they returned to the event venue, and they were just in time to go onto the stage to perform. There was no delay at all.
Moses Chan – “Toiling” LoverBoth Moses Chan and Myolie Wu have high popularity. But it was until last year when they filmed Chau Heung Angers Tong Bak Fu, did they really have scenes together. When the drama photos were being released, the criticisms on the internet were overwhelming. People felt that in terms of physical looks, both of them had a huge gap with their characters, Chau Heung and Tong Bak Fu. In addition, with another version being filmed earlier, it gave more pressure to the cast and production crew. Myolie Wu also said that this was the most tiring phase throughout her acting career. Moses’ seriousness and easy-going personality also left a deep impression on her. As there were many lines in this drama, and adding on that TVB’s filming pace was very fast, Moses continually worked hard to remember his lines, and he would sometimes fall asleep with the script still held in his hand. His memory was especially good, and he remembered most of his lines very well, earning Myolie Wu’s respect. As the filming process was very tiring, Moses often bought food back for everyone to eat. They would give encouragement to one another, and go through the hellish filming period together.
