A Vietnamese guy says he likes me (Chinese girl). I don't really know him and I've never dated anyone who was not Chinese so I'm not sure whether to give him a chance. I have heard that Vietnamese guys have infidelity issues and love to gamble. I realize these may be stereotypes so I want to ask girls if this is true and what your experience was dating a Vietnamese guy.

If you are Vietnamese guy, I want to hear your side too. Also, the guy I know says he's got sort of a Chinese fetish and mostly only dates Chinese girls. Can you help me figure out why that is? Could it be that he's just looking for a good time (fling)?

I'm a Vietnamese guy and yeah, although stereotypes are bad, they are there for a reason. Many Vietnamese guys I know do have problems with fidelity for some odd reason and some are known to be ultra controlling and have a temper. Wow, I'm making it worst for us. Anyways, however, you shouldn't judge someone by their stereotypes and such. Get to the know the guy, don't make assumptions right off the bat. He could be a genuinely nice guy; he might not be. Isn't it a risk we all take in relationships?

Oh, and a comment @ glk, don't hate on anybody please. Not what you hear about everyone is true. Although communication is important in relationships, that doesn't mean they both have to be the exact ethnicity, you know? I can see that rubie writes perfectly fine in English so they both can talk in English.

Oh, wow, that last question of yours rubie. It's probably just his prefence in girls. Everyone has theirs you know? And I think you can probably tell if he's a player looking for a fling or not. He probably just noticed you and wanted to go out with you, is that such a big deal?

Obviously... the stereotype is wrong. My boyfriend is Vietnamese and he neither smoke, gamble, drink or even do anything of that sort. All he does is play basketball -____-
The Vietnamese who like to gamble are mostly the one born in Vietnamese since it's their everyday habit

I have been in this situation as well, I was just being friendly with this chinese girl and her friends, cause well they live in the neighbourhood. One day when I drove her home, she told me to stop a block before her home, at first she didn't want to say it but her parents where prejudice against vietnamese guys and didn't want her to be associated with me. At the time I thought it was freaking racist of them. I felt like I was being treated unfairly especially when I am known around as a genuine nice guy and have more chinese friends then vietnamese ones. Because of that I didn't really feel like being friends with her anymore, rarely talk to her even when she still lives a block away, I have no love for people who are raised in such environments.

um....dont say skit unless you are dating one alright? what if i siad yuck to whatever ethnicity your at? everyone has the rights to pick who they want to date and what not, and your comment doesn't really have input to the topic.

to the original poster: im a chinese girl and im dating a vietnamese guy, and i dont know where you heard all those things from, but my boyfriend is NOT any of those things you just mentioned, he is kind, understanding, reasonable guy, and he will never cheat on me <well has yet that is >. its probably the type of vietnamese people your firend or family has encountered but then i can assure you that not all of them are like that. its not only vietnamese people you know that has gambling problems and such, some chinese people has it also. and probably a lot of other countries. so never just narrow it down to vietnamese people.

i mean as long as there in the asian group it should be fine for you right? its not like your going to go out with a afro-american girl, which is nothing wrong with....but its just like, your comparing the ethnicity to the color of someones skin. if you have feelings for them, then no matter what, it will work out.

my chinese friend just made me realize the other day that i was a very stereotypical viet guy...

Wow...thanks for input. So it's hit or miss with the infidelity/gambling issues. It's just that I've been hearing this from other Viet girls. I now live in a town where the majority of asians are Viet. I used to live in one where majority was Chinese so I'm still getting used to it. I know that Viet are not the only ones who gamble and have infidelity issues but when a couple of Viet girls say the same thing, it raises some concern.

The guy was born in Vietnam but moved to U.S. when he was young so he speaks perfect English, as do I, so communication is not a problem. Except if we need to communicate with each other's parents. Then it will be a problem. My parents are pretty traditional Chinese but I think they would rather I date Asian than any other race. Still, I guess I'll get to know him a little more first. Then decide whether it will lead anywhere. Thanks!!

To Mandrew: Chinese girls can be fun and free too. Your stereotype can easily be broken if you met the right kind of gal. Ultra conservative can be from upbringing and breeding and is most of the time just a front. Wait until you get to truly know the girl and you'll find that she can be just as fun as any other gal.

But I kid u not when I say HK girls are really conservative. Really conservative. Not many wear skirts. Not many wear halters. Mainly just kissing for the first month of dating. That's just from personal experience. Canadian Born Chinese on the other hand are lot more open. This isn't just merely steretyping, it deals with the cultural values. Western culture is a lot more open than HK culture.

From my personal experience with Viet guys, I have to say that most of them are cool. They are more ghetto than other Asians, but they can be tougher as well. It is not surprising that the guy you are interested in has a fetish for Chinese girls since they are more conservative and feminine compared to Viet girls. However, I do have to agree that parents typically do not like Viets.

everything u said is SPOT-ON. The bad viet guys are usually more rougher and gangsta than the bad chinese guys. Viet girls are much more aggressive and wild than chinese girls in general. I've seen Viet girls really going at it with each other because one of them was flirting with her bf. But thats only for the "bad" crowd. Good chinese and good viets are actually very much alike.

Well if you're talking pure vietnamese with a chinese person, there might be differences. But there are many Chinese/Viet mixes, and most of them (if not all) speak cantonese. Yes vietnamese guys have a gambling problem, it's apparent, i've lived near vietnamese people, and grew up with them, they friggin LOVE to gamble. Even the mixed ones. I'm not saying don't get with him. I think you should "date" for awhile and see how he is first, then if you like him, and he doesn't have any bad habits, get with him.

Nope - no problem with Viets at all. Love the food. Culture is very similar to Chinese so that's great too. Only uncertainty is that I don't know many Viet guys and a lot of the Viet girls I know tell me stories of how the husbands or boyfriends have gambling problems and try to keep a mistress in Vietnam. So that's the reason for this post.

This guy was born in Vietnam but moved to U.S. at young age so he's pretty Americanized. Based on the many positive opinions of those with Viet/Chinese relationships, I think I'll just let things happen naturally. If it works out, great. If not, at least I can say I tried. Thanks for the input!!

I don't think Viet guys are any more into gambling or any less faithful than any other race. It's like how Chinese people love mah jong. However, still, not everyone plays and likewise, not every Viet guy gambles. I actually hear about a lot of Chinese men having mistresses, too... But anyone can cheat, regardless of ethnicity. It's more of how you were raised.

Anyway, if he was raised in outside of Asia, I think he'd be more Westernized anyways and a lot of the typical stereotypes wouldn't apply. Don't think about it so much. Que sera sera.


My cousin's a Viet girl who's engaged to a Chinese guy. I also have a Vietamese grandaunt who married a Chinese guy. I have a Chinese uncle who just married a Vietnamese girl.


I just wanted to point out that I'm a Viet girl, and I would hardly call myself sexy (much less ultra sexy); slim, maybe; and I've never so much as dyed my hair, much less had blonde streaks. Plus, I consider myself rather conservative.

If your parents are the conservative type, you're gonna be fighting a up hill battle on this one. That is a hill that's twice as tall and three times as long.

When ever I do something radical, I ask myself what's the worst thing that can happen (your parents might disown you, that's what I can expect to be the worst thing), and can I handle it from there (ie: can you take care of yourself if your parents just left you out there)? Just be prepared for these things.

Viet guys can be quite controlling, like my friends, and I'd say being their girl friend isn't exactly a walk on the Boardwalk.

Well, in most Vietnamese areas, there are coffee shops where all the guys hang out. Sort of like a bar, but instead of selling alcohol, they sell coffee. Sort of like a sports bar and Hooters rolled into one, but without the alcohol.

I'm vietnamese and my girlfriend is chinese? I think I'm a good guy haha. I love her alot and vice versa and we are doing perfectly fine.

Viet guys aren't as people say they are. Some are really sweet and just like everyone else. Some do like to play cards, but just for fun and for a little while
And maybe if the first viet guy doesn't turn out to be good, remember that there are lots out there (other viets) better than him

I don't think the relationship would work since you obvious don't sound like you like him much. If you were really attract to him, you'd want to get to know him better as an individual instead of stereotyping him.
I don't really see where this bad stereotype of Vietnamese guys came from because i met guys from Thai, Philippine, Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan ect. and they're not much better ( Korean guys are especially stuck up and have really bad temper)

Well viet or chinese, you dont seem to into him in the first place. I'm going to harsh sterotype right now Viets usually affilate with having Weed Grow ops. i think it depends on the family your in, the environment your in... etc...
because my mom was born into a family who loves to gamble... but she ended up NOT GAMBLING because she got education... { i know what you thinking... whats that have to do with anything but it does}
