I've noticed that in UTCOL, the topic of pre-marital sex and pregnancy is a big part of the love storylines put by TVB. Out of no where you get hit with: First, Sze's big sister. Then Sze's youngest sister. I know it is not a huge issue considering the fact that most of us here -- are raised up in US or western culture. We can accept and see that pre-marital sex is perfectly fine.
But I have a question about those who are in HK or China or even other typical traditional Asian culture who were watching this series. Is pre-marital sex a new cultural acceptance to Asia now?
And for TVB, which is a very popular conservative telivision boardcasting company. I remember when I was younger, when TVB shows the love scenes between characters -- I got excited just to see them hold hands, and it would be a killer to see them kiss on the cheek! Hahaha, for ancient dramas, you'll be lucky to see the "shadows" by the fire to present a love scenes.
So for TVB do this ... is it to say that this is one of the major liberal turn for Asian culture now.
Just a curious thoughts.

hey really? hmm actually i think its becoming more and more liberal now. not just tvb i mean, the entire feel of everything is liberalized. i get what you mean that the standards are changing now, many series show err similar scenes/storylines. i don't think i'll say i can't accept such a culture cause its all around in the mass media, but i really prefer those fairytale-like innocent untainted love stories! haha.

thanks for sharing your thoughts. you have brought up a really good point. mass media puts alots of new influence to popular culture now. they may be good and they maybe terrible.
i agree with you, i miss the "innocent" and "untainted" love from asian (TVB) series. I think sex is an overrated topic now.

yeah i think many series are putting too much emphasis on sex. yet i kind of liked the sweet innocent love contributed by nick also in under the canopy of love! somehow i feel that although serial drams cannot be too unrealistic, the main point is that when we watch these shows, it is somewhat trying to reach a dimension which reality cannot attain. similarly i feel that i enjoyed thinking that such pure and true, even unreciprocated love can exist, at least in serial dramas. i truly hope that more of such kinds of relationship are portrayed cause they truly are sweet to watch!

sex is definitely an overated topic as can be seen in under the canopy of love. we are getting less and less characters like nick and i really miss this innocent love which was more popular when i was younger. however, what we see on tv now may be a mirror image of reality, less guys are like nick

and that because of the media and 'popular culture', more and more people are definitely becoming more liberal, reflected by the constant mentioning of sex et al on tv... therefore, tv is always on the safe wave especially tvb, so go with the flow and we'll be getting more and more of these 'edgy' topics coming up soon.

yeahhh...definitely...it's a good point being brought up...but it seems that it's well accepted in hk that to get married bc of that...and it's happy tooo if the two ppl were going out for a long time...very diff from traditional views...

The series ARE supposed to have a realistic feel yeah? And in reality, a lot of people do have pre-marital sex. And I think maybe that's why they added it in. And to teach people about teh nuissance and etc. Or that you should treasure your child, in Niki'sbig sisiter's point of veiw.

This is a really interesting topic to bring up. I have to say that I was shocked about Sze's younger sister Coco getting pregnant with that guy, they had barely started dating! I remember thinking, TVB never did this before, what happened? But I guess they have to keep up with the mass media and also incorporate real life problems and lessons to the overall fair-tale plot. Its nice that they did not add anything sexual to the relationship of the main characters and just focused on their true love for each other.
i remember back in the days where the most physical contact a couple had was holding hands or linking arms. so when i watched a series (or movie) where the couple actually kissed (lips on lips) i was so shocked! kindred spirit also had the pre-marital sex storyline and that was quite a while ago

I don't think it's acceptable in the main land but in the HK it's more acceptable. HK got a lot of influence of the british establement. So HK is more close to the western world than main land china is.

what's wrong with such a topic? i see nothing wrong with sex in general. i dont think anyone would be here if it werent for sex. you make it seem like its wrong to have that in the media. i think people who are grown up wouldnt see it as offensive unless sex is something that bothers them personally, then thats because they have a problem with or regarding sex.
i mean, get REAL. EVERYONE has sex. and if you dont like it then you need to fix your sexual life! Go get laid, maybe you'll see a different view. I dont understand why people are so close-minded.

i guess it depends on the person.
I personally do not agree with pre-martial sex and that's what I go by, but in TVB series, it does seem like it's getting very popular.
