QUOTE
During the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo, figure skater Janet Lynn stumbled into Japanese pop culture when she fell during a free-skate period—but continued to smile even as she sat on the ice. Though she placed only 3rd in the actual competition, her cheerful diligence and indefatigability resonated with many Japanese viewers, making her an overnight celebrity in Japan. Afterwards, Lynn (a peace activist) was repeatedly seen flashing the V sign in the Japanese media. Though the V sign was known of in Japan prior to Lynn's use of it there (from the post-WWII Allied occupation of Japan), she is credited by some Japanese for having popularized its use in amateur photographs.

Yeah...

V^.^V

yah, i see alot of people do it. when i'm in pictures, i just stand there with arms to the side lol. i think the only time i would do a 'V' sign in pictures is when i see other people doing it kekeke.

but really, doing something with your hands when in pictures make you stand out and more enthusiastic-looking, duncha think? it's better than just standing there... so plain.
gellai
lol, yea. it doesn't really mean anything to me..
first, i thought it meant "peace" lol.
but i do it when i'm with my friends...
in one of those photbooths where u can draw
stuff on the pics.. lol. it's actually just for fun...
Rukawa

inXplicable

runaway_bride
I think the V signs means victory. just a pose for taking pics.
Ms. Nguyen

Isn't that only if the back of your hand is facing outward? Asians who do the "V" sign always have the palm of their hand facing out.
spanisht3chno
I suppose people find the V sign cute :S
But I honestly don't get how its supposed to be cute! I actually find it quite annoying... I never use it unless I'm imitating the people who actually uses these signs whistle.gif
keepp
I HATE, ABSOLUTELY HATE that damn V sign. almost every freaking asian, their pet and cousin do that when posing for photos. WHY? for the love of...$&#^# irritated.gif
chunho
^Better than just standing there. haha.

I, personally haven't done the V sign but when I see others do it for a picture, it just lightens up the mood. Standing there with a normal smile doesn't give off an energetic feel haha, the V just makes it funnier haha
aisu_kuriimu
lol i use it .. i have no idea why, but its so natural to me now.. it just something i do automatically when i take a photo... cant help it, have become so acustomed to it.
durianlord
because they think they are kawaii when they actually shatter glass. i rather drop my pants in such an occasion that do such a stupid sitgn
lavenderwingz
hahah, well i guess the v sign, can also be called the 'fob' sign, which is someting that asisans do a lot in their photos. i for one am 50/50, sometimes do it,a nd sometimes don't.but i think its a cute thing, if i wanted to look dorqy, i woul dhave the v sign, i don't mind, but to be referred as an 'asian' thing, i just think its stupid, cuz then when others do it, it would be refrred as a victory sign. its jsut having something to do when taking a photo biggrin.gif
GhstDreamer
Sometimes I do the "V" sign when I want to feel silly or just plain weird. If I'm taking a serious picture then of course not. It doesn't mean anything to me though except for some strange reason it makes me look happier lol
sweetbub
lol....me and my friends called the "V" sign the "fob" sign....sometimes we do it just to make fun of ourselves and we joke about it....it not such a bad thing...some people might see it as cute, some people might see it as funny, and others might just want to pose like tat....

i felt my spine shiver

stanzz
a lot of my friends see it as the fob sign, although we still use it in pics...
rubiskyy
im not sure why they do that, maybe world peace. i've seen dalai lama did it once, copycat maybe?
KeongJai
I soemtimes do the V sign behind someone's head to make them look like they got horns. Just a habit since I was a kid.
teddyc
I think its one of the most retarded things that people still do today. It's old, and out and I have no idea how it came in.
Clemzstar
i think its just a cute thing to do while taking pics

minx~
i used to do it and my friend kept telling me no..so i dont anymore but i think its cute.
killmart
i dont do that often now. but when i was kid yeah xD and i do the check sign too xD and place it under my chin xD
Akiana
I used to do the V-sign when I was in elementary school, but as I grew older, I stopped using it. It was cute when you're young but when I see grown-ups doing it, that's childish, in a funny way... I mean, once awhile is alright, but posing with the sign in almost every picture... that's ridiculous!

As for the history of the sign, there are many different meanings. Like some of the replies, it depends on where you're from and your culture. To some people, the sign means victory; to others, it's a peace sign; but it may be insulting to some. Or someone just simply wanted two beers at a bar lmao.gif

Insulting
QUOTE
The UK insulting version of the gesture (with the palm inwards) performs a similar social function to "the finger". The "two fingered salute", or "bowfinger", as it is also known, is commonly performed by flicking the V upwards from wrist or elbow. "The finger" is traceable to Roman times, but may be unrelated in origin, as the insulting V sign is largely restricted to the UK, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, and Spain, where it is popular among taxi drivers in Madrid. The insulting V sign is not widely recognized in the United States.
...
In Australia, the gesture is known as "the forks", as in "he gave me the forks", being an obvious reference to the resemblance of a fork by the protruding fingers. "The forks" also alludes to the verbal insult "get forked" (the polite version of "get f*cked") which the palm-in V-sign is also taken to mean. It is also occasionally known, as in the UK, as "the two fingers" or just "the fingers". Also in the UK, but specifically in Scotland (where this gesture is known commonly as the 'Vicky'), the fingers have come to mean the highly insulting, "Go take a flying f*ck." The UK usage is such that "V sign" is almost uniquely reserved for the insulting gesture, "peace sign" or "victory sign" being used for its alternative meanings.

On that same page [Wiki] the sign is also seen as a symbol for peace and/or for victory. Yet, on a different note, the V-sign is viewed as a symbol for satanic cult. It has relations with the Masonic society, the Illuminati, communist parties, and others of "Satanism" nature. Of course, this is in the view of Christian believers, and it may be only one of many Christianity's view on the matter, but what you choose to believe is up to you.

QUOTE
The signal "actually began as a symbol of Satanic benediction during the rituals.'' This sign has been used by Yasser Arafat, Richard Nixon, Winston Churchill, and Stewart Meacham, Co-Chairman of Reds' New Mobilisation Committee." Churchill said that the sign stood for victory but remember that Churchill was one of the insider "elite" and a Mason. He most likely knew the evil significance of this symbol but tried to give it a facelift.

The "v sign" has a colourful history. "V" is the Roman sign for the number five and Adam Weishaupt used it in the Illuminati to symbolise the "Law of Fives,'' but there's more. In the Cabala: "the meaning for the Hebrew letter for V (Van) is 'Nail.' Now, 'The Nail' is one of the secret titles of Satan within the Brotherhood of Satanism. Satan is letting us know that this is one of his favourite signs. Why else does he like the PENTA-gram (Penta = five!) and the FIVE-fold salute used in Masonry and Witchcraft?''

Furthermore: "The Leftists, radicals, and Satanists who have popularised that sign...know its ancient significance very well. In fact, that 'V' sign is now used extensively by such Communist organisations as the Young Socialist Alliance, Vets for Peace in Vietnam, and the Students for a Democratic Society."

And alas, in Dan Brown's book "Angels and Demons", he mentioned that the V-sign represents the Goddess of Fertility. The sign derived from some of the many art pieces from the Upper Paleolithic and can be seen on Old European pottery [6000-4000 BC]. Thus, when someone poses with the v-sign, they're hoping for fertility. laugh.gif

well quoted, well said
azndgn26
it's simple as this: asians who make V signs while takin a picture are FOBs or act like one (even if they are not). yes, I'm being stereotypical but it's bcuz most asians livin in asia do it.
individuality xT
I obviously noticed that too. I don't pose with the peace sign in pictures. I find it annoying to see people doing that. I really wonder if most of the asians that sticks out a V know what it stands for.
µØ¥J¤p¤Ñ¦a~~
basically, they dont care wat it means...for me..it do it but dont really care about what it means...
aznelite03
when I take pictures I just smile or do a silly pose.....the V sign is just out of date
aznboi1984
lol...from what i know i called it the fobby look...alot of people i know that is in china all do that...my grandma loves to do that...she tells me it makes her feel young again lol...and i guess its their pose...i just make funny faces...and they think that is weird lol

jeahh
Heh, its' suppose to be cute and stereotypes you to be a "fob"... i do it sometimes because it's funny and because i look like a fob anyway -___-;; hahha.
Nyte
I don't do it, I find a middle finger with a smile on my face a bit more funny in a picture clapping.gif
either that or I find somewhere to put my hands... 1.gif
Brandoboy8
you know what? you got a GREAT FREAKEN POINT there!...LOL...i usually don't use that V sign in pictures, but when i do, i don't even know why i m using it...LOL..........i guess that in pictures, my hands are feeling "naked" so prolly when everyone else is making that sign, there's nothing better to do but going with the flow?.......hehe.......yea, i know it means for "peace" but i never THINK of "peace" when i apply it...hehe.......

and hmm....well, i heard it from some classmates, is it true that the V sign means the F-word in certain counties?.........(instead of "peace"?)
fukwailui
I don't mind the V sign but I think it can be annoying if you do it in every photo. For me, it means "victory" and I only do it when I'm feeling victorious e.g. outside the casin0 after I've won money loool.gif
diopatra
no i dont do that. i find it child-like gesture. if you're a child or a teen it still acceptable, but if you're 20+, please dont do that its not good too look at

I find it very annoying sometimes how in almost EVERY picture.. asians pose that way. Like at theme parks, Disneyland.. i see groups of asians taking pictures throughout the day and they would ALWAYS hold up that sign. I personally don't do it.
joaniemaloney
Wow, I used to do that in every other picture taken, haha. But I don't anymore, the habit's kind of died.tongue.gif
Alexa
I do V signs, poke my cheeks, make faces, everything LOL. I have done it since I was a child though. When i was a kid, I always stick up out my tongue, pointed at the camera, or made thiese really huge, crooked grins with my nose all scrunched up XD
