i don't watch TOB that much but from what i've seen, they've went back to the 70's style. With those b&w movies where the fighters just stand there with the hand out and something will fly out to fight the other person.... and if there is some actual fighting, they just jerk on the camera so you don't get a close look. The actors are just hacking and slashing away without even touching eachother.
what do you prefer? some choreography where they actually do some fighting or these kind of tricks?

i prefer choreography...to me, it's much more exciting...you can also see how versatile and talented an actor/actress is...not everyone can do it and look good...i have seen bad acting and/or bad choreography in the past but i do give them credit for trying unlike what's happening in TOB for example...make people wonder about the credibility of the actors/actresses...

Do you prefer Wire-Fu, Kung-Fu, or SFX-fu?
NOTE: By Kung-Fu I mean realistic fighting!

Those Once Upon A Time In China movies with Jet Li are wire fu.
An Example of SFX-fu is Twin of Brothers.
They can fly and shoot chi (projectiles) at will. Don't get me wrong, I am not a ToB hater, infact this series is my 2nd favorite. Because I love historical/fighting series
If Twins of Brothers went the Kung-Fu route it would have easily became my #1 favorite with A Step Into The Past at 2nd.
' An example of Kung-Fu is A Step Into The Past.
The fighting was
realistic. One of the reason this series has remain my #1 favorite.
(I am confused on this "really." As I can't really tell some Wire-fu from Kung-fu). As you have read I prefer Kung-Fu (Realistic fighting) over Wire-Fu or SFX-fu. What about you?

no no. Twins of Brother is not wirefu! Those Once Upon A Time In China movies with Jet Li are wire fu.
TOB is pure SFX.
If combined nicely like the jetli examples, it's great. Ordinary kungfu usually doesn't look nice and strong in movies or series, but wirefu combined with kungfu gives a lot of impact.
I don't like SFX-fu at all.

Thanks for the clarification.
In that case, I don't like SFX-fu either.
Not sure how the fighting was done in A Step Into The Past, but that is the kind of fighting I prefer for my series

A mixture of wire-fu and kungfu is the best, But if i really had to pick i would say kungfu. I love those old bruce lee movies.

For me it depends on what kind of ancient series. Shaolin series are so good with real kungfu. For wire-fu it's best w/sfx like all the china/taiwan ancient series. If I had to only pick one thou it would be kungfu esp. Bruce Lee or Jet li's shaolin movies.

I agree with scooper, I so much prefer the choreography of the 70s and 80s. It's more real and exciting to watch. And it is cool in a sense, you get to see new things than fake effects that will get out of date very soon no matter how good it looks now. It really prevents a series from being classic. And a lot of effects that TVB use is bad, TOB use better effects but choreography is so much better.

yeah, the 70s and 80s kung fu was much more enjoyable to watch. At least you know those shows are choreography by people who knows real kung fu. It also makes it more realistics for the views. TOB was over the top and u know the actors stands there and let the SX guys do all the work.

Well, even though it is much more fake, I have to admit that Wire-fu is really pretty. In Twin of Brothers, the girls fly in the air, making everything look more graceful and easy to do. But wire-fu is difficult to do for the actors. I'm a huge fan of ancient costume dramas so I enjoy watching wire-fu, especially with lots of action.
I would love to see kung-fu from the actors and actresses but not everyone has Jet Li's abilities so the next best thing is SFX-fu and wire-fu. I'm happy with Twin of Brothers, it just shows you how much technology has developed.
I like the mixture of both Kung Fu and Wire. Makes the fight scenes look more exciting, and it does seem to make the actors and actresses work a bit harder.

kung fu n wire fu n a little bit of special effects is teh best combo they should use wire n kung fu in all series n special effects only in serie before the song dynasty because in the ming dynasty they have different hair style like wong fei hung n they only do kungfu fighting after taht but if its like the han or tang dynasty they have crazy flying n special effect for the blast n stuff

I prefer real kung fu with a bit of wire-fu mixed in a-la jackie chan. armor of god, Operation condor had one of the most entertaining crowd fight scenes that I've evert witness. I especially enjoy Jackie's fight with Benny the Jet in Wheels on Meals. Such classics are are to be beaten today.

i would say kung-fu and wire-fu together gives the best effect....
but alittle SFX-fu is acceptable...because sometimes it does make things look nice...but if overly used...then it's not good..and that's also a reason why i didn't like TOB, because too fake......and all the fighting scenes just make my eyes hurt seeing all those colour beams of light floating here and there...

wire fu and kung fu im alrite with, but i really dont like TVB's special effect fu its so cheap it looks so lame and most of the time tries to copy a little bit of matrix

I think choreography is better .. When they just fight like that in TOB .. I don't really get attracted to it .. On the other hand .. When they actually fight physically .. It's more interesting to watch .. There's like more action to it ..
i prefer SFX kung fu.. because the effects make it more exciting and funner to watch..
but too much or too fake makes it just silly
combination of wire + sfx would give best effect i think

i like choreography better cause you actually see what they are doing...and maybe you can try it in real life

....especially like real kung fu...where it teaches you the kung fu, weng chun...special effects is also cool where you see all these amazing moves but are fake...but i still like choreography better

Deal sealer for me is a combination of wirefu and kungfu with minimal special effects. Like they used to do in the 90s-ish. Kungfu by itself gets too boring. Mix in a little flying and some explosions and voila! Hours of quality entertainment.

Use the right amounts of each "fu" with a decent plot and I can sit there for hours.
No laser beams, please!
