Disclaimer: I am no writer so pardon me if the way I write is not poetic or descriptive enough. I write in the best way that I know how to, which is straight forward and right from my heart so hope you guys don't mind my writing too much. =)How Cookie Came to Love Wookie(Haha it rhymes!)Ryeowook.
Ah. Our cute little Eternal Magnae.
Let me first state that I am very new to Korean music. In fact, I only sort of delved into it this year. And though I knew about this group called Dong Bang Shin Ki long time ago, I always dismissed them as yet another boyband till I heard them sing live on a radio show by Kim Jeong Hoon (That's the guy who acted in Goong and the reason why I even stepped into the Korean world in the first place! So I guess I have him to thank).
To summarize, I fell for DBSK and their singing and started watching their variety shows which included Xman, Star King etc.
Through them, I found hilarious clips of Xman and Star King (which were previously posted by the user coolsmurf - some of you may know) and one of the many clips I watched was the one which had the battle of the 2 cutest little girls.
This was the episode Super Junior was guests on. I don't know how many of you watched this episode or just that clip where the two girls competed to see who were the cutest.
At one point, Hodong asked each girl to picked the most good looking oppa from the guests who were seated and of course the first girl picked Siwon.
When it was the other little girl's turn to pick, every one was frantically trying to get her attention - Shindong even offered her a banana! lol! But amidst the chaos, I couldn't help but notice this quiet/seemingly disinterested looking guy next to Siwon.
Ahh. That was the first time I noticed Ryeowook.
You could say it was his quietness that made him stand out from the rest - at least to me it did.At that time, I had NO idea who Super Junior was.. just a vague idea that they were this really huge group without about 1000 members.
Ok just kidding, 13 members!! But you get my drift....
=============
The next time I saw him again was when I was watching DBSK and Super Junior's song "Show Me Your Love".
Knowing that SJ had 13 members, I was not expecting much from the vocals so I was interested to hear how the voice of that quiet dude sounded like.. and woah! DID HE SURPRISE ME!
Though he had like only a couple of lines, it was enough to let me know that he COULD sing. (The other voice I noticed was Yesung's btw)
So decided to go online and find out who this quiet dude was.. and man.. did it take me LONG.. going through each wikipedia page of every SJ member!
And you know how Wikipedia lists all the SJ members by AGE? I had to go through about 10 members before I finally found out this guy was Kim Ryeowook! lol!
I also remember thinking to myself, "What?! Changmin is YOUNGER than this guy?!" Because it seemed like Changmin was way older haha/
But at that time my interest was still very much in DBSK and I still did not know much about Super Junior...
=============
THEN.. I found out about
Exploration of the Human Body! I guess most of you can predict what happened next!
The very first episode I watched was naturally the one which DBSK guested on.. and there was quiet dude! Haven't committed his name to memory yet! But there he is!
And I found myself liking him even more when it was his turn to run and he innocently, unconfidently asked
"Do I use my left hand to press the button?"I almost fell off the chair laughing (as did the rest of the DBSK and SJ members!!) because with his quietness and disinterested manners so far, I thought he was one of those 'emo' cool guys.
And it made things even worse (or better haha) when he ran and MISSED hitting the button!!!
Seeing him laughing in embarressment in his typical manner of covering his mouth with his hand, I couldn't help but take a liking to this shy member of Super Junior.
This totally crushed that cool, distant image I had of him and he turned into this adorable little boy in my eyes!

I think it was around this time that I started committing his name to memory (and also started finding out more about Super Junior)
By the time I have gotten to watching a few more episodes of EHB, I found Ryeowook to be a member out of both DBSK and SJ to be on my mind.
If you recall the first episode of EHB where they had to eat the herb which would make them lose one of their sense of taste - when Ryeowook asked so naively "Forever?!" - I just had to smile.
It was the many such antics of Ryeowook which emerged from EHB that I found myself liking him more and more and would start to look out for him in the rest of the EHB episodes.
=============
I don't remember why or how but perhaps I was curious to see what the name "Ryeowook" would churn out in youtube.. but yes, I typed in the name Ryeowook and clicked "search".
Within a split second, out came several videos of Ryeowook singing on Miracle 4 U. Had no idea it was Yesung's radio show but just randomly clicked on one of them out of curiousity and turned back to another window screen to do my work.
The voice that came out was so clear and emoting with so much feeling. And the simple piano accompanying him behind seemed to be the perfect complement to his voice.
I couldn't resist and had to stop doing whatever I was doing to turn back to the youtube screen.
Watching him sing in his rawest form with no make up, no dancers, no glitzy hairdo.. emoting the lyrics with so much feeling though there wasn't any live audience... it was just pure joy to watch.
I come from a background where I was in two of the top choirs in Singapore for 6 years and while I don't profess to have a wonderful singing voice, I do believe that I have the credibility to judge whether a person's vocals are good or not.
And when I talk about vocals, I do not just mean getting the notes technically correct. It is equally important for me that the singer is able to bring across the emotions of the songs such that one is moved even if he or she doesn't understand the lyrics.
Ryeowook managed to do precisely that. And I was suprised.But as I was still in the process of uncovering more and more DBSK songs, Ryeowook wasn't the top priority on my mind yet.
Still, I decided to download and convert every single youtube video I could find of him singing and further ripped the audios from these videos so I could properly listen to them one day amidst my DBSK songs.
=============
The rips must have been in my MP3 player for a few weeks but I never listened to them because I would automatically click on my DBSK playlist.
Things remained the way it was until one day I decided to just upload the songs to my computer at work because I needed less noisy songs at work to concentrate and Ryeowook's songs seem to be what I need.
And for the first time, I was forced to sit through every single rip I made of Ryeowook singing.
Funny thing was, I didn't mind the least when the songs started repeating themselves. In fact, I found myself picking up the words and singing the harmony with him when I could.
For some of the songs, I would even find myself tearing while doing my work for no reason at all because I just felt moved, I don't know why!!
This just happened in the past 3 months or so I think.
Ryeowook had me hooked with his singing and I knew given the fact that I already liked the shy, quiet character that he was, he is definitely one person whom I would start paying more attention to in future.
=============
And that's pretty much how I turned from a person who did not even know who Super Junior was, to becoming such a huge admirer and supporter of Ryeowook. (And yes, I do love the rest of the SJ boy as well!)
With each video that I watch of him, I just can't find a single reason to dislike him.
In the Super Junior Show, he displayed his AMAZING piano skills for like a few seconds and that totally blew me away. I can't believe that he is so freaking talented yet it seems to go unnoticed by many.
Recently, I also discovered that a few months ago when he appeared on Sungmin's Chunji show, there was a segment dedicted for audience to send in their lyrics on a certain theme and Ryeowook would compose a song based on the lyrics.
Listening to some of the songs, his talent is undeniable and I truly want him to be successful in his goal to be a composer.
On most variety shows, he sits quietly and shyly in a corner, smiling or laughing when he thinks something is funny and speaks only when spoken to. But everything he speaks in such a respectful and cute manner that you can't help but adore him - especially when he gives that lovable smile of his.
I am also glad that someone recognized his acting talent when he got nominated for his role in Attack of the Pin Up Boys. Honestly if Ryeowook was given a chance, I think he has the potential to be a good actor.
Watching him in Mystery 6 and their mini drama series, I did feel that he had alot of potential. When it was his turn to host the EHB episode on Tears, he also spoke very well and explained the process of tears forming like he knew it all his life!
If you guys watched the recent SJM interview on Sukira, you would also have realized that he is very eloquent and he is able to make his voice rise and fall at appropriate times when he was telling his "Ryeowook's China Diary" story, which made it sound so much more interesting and kept the audience engaged.
Sometimes, I wish that producers would notice this and start giving him more screen time instead of constantly giving it to the usual members like Lee Teuk, Kangin, Heechul etc.
But perhaps it is a blessing in disguise because that way, we get to cherish this eloquent and talkative side of Ryeowook even more when we do witness it.
=============
I don't know Ryeowook personally (though I wish I could) but I don't believe that I am too far off from the truth when I say that I think he must be one of the nicest and most pure hearted person in the world.
I mean, just see what all the other Hyungs say off him. That is one way to tell the sort of person he is.
Next would be all his little actions of hugging his members.
Then of course running errands, cooking and buying food for his hyungs/dongsaengs at midnight though they had to get up early the next morning.
Animal Farm made me love and treasure Ryeowook not just as an artiste but as a person even more when I saw how he took so much efforts to care for Ddabong and how he hugged Ddabong close to him when he was at the Animal Hospital.
And I guess I don't even have to elaborate much on the part where Ddabong passed away and how Ryeowook blamed himself as he thought he was also responsible for 'abadoning' Ddabong at the hospital.
Truth be told, I AM watching an edited TV Show and all these scenes could have been cut so as to manipulate a viewer like me into feeling what exactly I am feeling now about Ryeowook.
But sometimes I think we can sense deep in our heart whether is it just acting? Or are there real emotions and a person's true character being shown through the show?
And for me? I do believe that Ryeowook's character IS how it is portrayed in all the shows that he has appeared.
Shy. Innocent. Quiet. Abit unconfident but more than ready to speak up when he has to. Loving. Caring. Needing someone to be dependant on but also able to take care of the rest.
And I don't ever ever EVER think that he would hurt anyone intentionally (or even unintentionally.)
=============
Though I know in the entertainment industry you can never be completely pure or innocent, Ryeowook has somewhat managed to keep most of it intact and seems to be almost the same as he was when he first debut-ed - just that he has more confidence now.
I love Ryeowook not just because he is a member of Super Junior, but because of the person that he is.
If he was not a member of Super Junior and I had him in my circle of friends, you can be sure that he would be someone I would protect and cherish!
I love his singing and am proud of the fact that he seems to be one of the fastest and best when it comes to picking up other languages.
I mean, have you heard him singing in English? His accent is hardly there! His Chinese songs are also quite accurate. Now if he starts picking up Japanese, that would be awesome (though he still had a very cute accent there - speaking of which, VERY glad that for the 1st premium event in Japan, Ryeowook had screen time within the first few minutes! Go Ryeowook!)
There were a few months I kinda did not get any news of Ryeowook because he was in SJM and I was not that interested in SJM at that time.. but recently I had the chance to watch the shows that SJM went on.. and I have to say.. that perhaps deep down inside, I do feel that it may have been a good move for Ryeowook to be put into SJM.
For that, we see another side of him. Sexier. More confident. More screen time. And his natural character is able to come out more with fans loving him for that.
He might not be a model with Siwon's height and looks.
He might not be loud and boistorous like how Kangin can be on TV.
He might not be as eccentric and sharp-tongued as Heechul.
He might not be as gagman funny as Shindong or Leeteuk.
BUT... I hope he realizes that he doesn't have to turn into all that in order to have fans who will love and support him.
Yes, maybe no one wants to take pics of him or fancams of him at the SMTOWN concert, given the fact that there are 5 DBSK guys and 12 other SJ members.. as well as 5 younger Shinee members..
But you know what, Ryeowook?
True talent like yours never goes unnoticed.
And a good heart will never go unappreciated!
Stay true to yourself and I hope that you be happy as much as you can for every day of your life!
And that your talent will be recognized and that you become a famous and successful composer/songwriter in the near future. (Well, you already are one right now in my eyes!)
Ryeowook Fighting!
