If i'm not wrong, I believe TVB is planning to sign (or already signed) with Mike He, a Taiwanese star. I'm wondering what do you think TVB hopes to achieve by doing so? And were you surprise when TVB said they signed with him?

I think it could be that TVB is just buying on Mike's fame b/c of his popularity in TVB series due to the rumors that ATV is planning to show their series with Rain. I don't know how much it would help, but it seems really random when I saw the news about TVB signing with Mike. What do you think?

i think it's just because of Mike's popularity that TVB signed/gonna sign him. if it was other taiwanese actor with less fame, i doubt TVB will even consider signing. just look at AF, how many Mike fans are around here? if he was to act in a TVB series, how many ppl will watch it for him? tons i tell you, most likely the reaction will be something like "omg Mike He in a TVB series!!! i must watch this!!!".
and in HK, most teenage/young ppl that are into him/taiwanese stuff will probs watch it and maybe even some 'see lai's. and adding that it's kinda something fresh, a taiwanese actor in something TVB. all that will most likely result to high ratings. so yeah, i personally think it's all about the ratings.

does this equation make any sense to you?
good look + youth = (good ratings + attracting advertisers' pocket) * big money
since when a tv station cares about the person itself? yes, they care about the package, but definitely more on how much their year end profits look like in the balance sheet. all artistes are just one commodity, same as the audience, just like artistes look upon the station as the fortune wheel, just a matter of how well it is being spun.

yes i have to agree its to earn money and its to also like expand a bit to taiwan i think?
i guess its cause u see lots of taiwan series being so successful and being watched by hong kong people so i guess there is potential for like tvb to further step into the taiwanese market? and have more like series that appeal to mandarin people and start off by getting some taiwanese stars?
and yeah i have to say mike he is extremely popular and hes very hot and so yeah he appeals... hes got a huge fanbase.. it would earn tvb alot of money

ehh, it could be that TVB feels like it's time for them to expand their horizons to include more people from different places to appeal to a wider audience

truthfully, i had no idea who mike he was until news came out that tvb was signing with him and i really don't see him as a threat to the other male artists

Yeah, I understand that a huge part about this is probably about money, but I thought it was surprising that they plan to hire a Taiwanese idol now. There were other popular good looking Taiwanese idols that were popular before, why not hire them before but now?

Hmm…that is interesting…. TVB stepping into the Taiwanese market with their dramas. Since they are sort of successful in China, it is reasonable they might want to broaden their path in Taiwan….though they will have more competition there…..and dare I say, though I think TVB is afraid of competition lol. After all, they did try to step in to Thailand and Singapore (Split Second, Yummy Yummy), and probably Philippines (I think with casin0 Crisis…unsure). It makes me wonder whether TVB is going to attempt idol type of series like Heart of Fencing/Sunshine Heartbeat as well as other manga/anime based dramas or are they going to stick to more realistic dramas if that happens.

I don’t know who Mike He is either (like how he looks and how he acts, etc), but I know he was in a popular Taiwanese idol drama. So it jumped out when the news say TVB plans to/ or already signed with him lol.

I think TVB fans would feel that he isn’t a threat, but is it possible that Mike He is more well-known compared with Ray, Ron, Bosco., etc? I’m talking about popularity-wise. If the spotlight is always focused on Mike, and it probably will be, then how would it affect the younger generation of actors? Would they be more discouraged and ponder on the prospects of leaving?

hmm, i don't think the spotlight would be focused on mike necessarily. cause you have to remember that the media only covers things that interests their audience. therefore if the hong kong people aren't too into mike, then the media probably won't cover him as much. as long as the audience remains fairly evenly faithful to all the actors/actresses out there i don't see how the media would just focus on one person

and again, it only takes one scandal to take all the media attention away from one person

hmm.. well the show that mike he acted dby or something all are from the same tv station tvbs or tvbsg. isnt that part of tvb? i thought it was all one big company.. so it would be reasonable for the actors from taiwan go to hong kong if its like from the same big company. or is there big difference between the tvb in hk and the one in taiwan? and arent hk shows already famous in taiwan? cuz they show it on tvbs or something right? or i thought it did.
